Proverbs 9:1-9
1  Wisdom has built her house, She has hewn out her seven pillars;
2  She has slaughtered her meat, She has mixed her wine, She has also furnished her table.
3  She has sent out her maidens, She cries out from the highest places of the city,
4  "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!" As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him,
5  "Come, eat of my bread And drink of the wine I have mixed.
6  Forsake foolishness and live, And go in the way of understanding.
7  "He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself, And he who rebukes a wicked man only harms himself.
8  Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.
9  Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
Father God, bless us and guide us in all that we do. We ask that the Holy Spirit opens our heart and mind to fully comprehend Your Word. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of II Peter 1:1-4 NKJV
This introduction for the second Epistle of Peter is taken from JSM.
It is believed that Peter wrote this Second Epistle sometime between A.D. 61 and A.D. 65. In fact, some think that he may have written it as late as A.D. 67. But there is no concrete proof either way, only hints here and there.
All that appears on that subject from the Epistle itself is that at the time of its writing the Author was expecting soon to die. “Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ has showed me” (II Peter 1:14).
What evidence he had that he was soon to die he has not informed us; nor is it known even what he meant precisely by the word “shortly.” The Greek word is indeed one that would imply that the event was expected not to be far off; the Savior (John 21:18) did not state to Peter when his death would occur, except that it would be when he should be “old”; and the probability is that the fact that he was growing old was the only hint that he had that this time was drawing near.
THE PLACE FROM WHERE THE EPISTLE WAS WRITTEN, AND TO WHOM
Some think this Epistle was written from Babylon exactly as was his first Epistle; however, it is not really known as to the place of its origination.
Actually, that is not too very much important, with those to whom it was written being of greater significance.
On this subject there is no room for doubt. In II Peter 3:1, Peter says: “This Second Epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance.” This Epistle was written, therefore, to the same persons as the former. It was addressed to persons who resided in Asia Minor, and in both they are regarded as in the midst of trials.
THE PURPOSE FOR THE EPISTLE
This Epistle appears to have been written, not so much in view of persecutions and bodily sufferings, as was the first, as in view of the fact that there were teachers of error among them, the tendency of whose doctrine was to turn them away from the Gospel. To those teachers of error, and to the dangers to which Believers were exposed on that account, there is no allusion in the First Epistle, and it would seem not to be improbable that Peter had been informed that there were such teachers among them after he had written and dispatched the first Letter.
Christians must beware of false teachers (II Peter 2:1–22) who deny the soon return of the Lord, and as well, who live immoral and greedy lives (II Peter 3:3–4). These teachers are clever and claim Scriptural support from Paul’s Epistles for their views of liberty, but they pervert the Letters and are headed for damnation (II Peter 3:15–16). The Church, as Peter writes, is to be alert to error, thereby, growing in Grace and the knowledge of the Lord (II Peter 3:17–18).
If it is to be noticed, Paul addressed his last Letter (II Timothy) to this very problem. In other words, it was corrective, even as this Second Epistle written by Peter is corrective. In Peter’s First Epistle, we hear the voice of the Teacher. In this Second Epistle it is rather the Apostle who speaks. Consequently, the theme of this Letter is “Faithfulness in a Day of Apostasy.”
It is ironical that the things which Paul warned us about, and the things which Peter addresses as well concerning apostasy in the last days, are now taking place in the modern Church.
APOSTASY
For the Holy Spirit to emphasize this subject, and especially to do it as forcefully as He has, actually taking up a large part of this Epistle, characterizes the teachers of error, in showing that they would certainly come to a destructive end, and as well, he states the true Doctrine in opposition to what they held.
It is evident that Peter supposed that the danger to which Christians in Asia Minor were exposed by these errors, was not less than that to which they were exposed from persecution, and that it was of as much importance to guard them from those errors as it was to sustain them in their trials.
These false teachers adopted a pompous mode of teaching, distinguished for sound (meaning a lot of words) rather than for sense, and proclaimed themselves to be the special friends of the liberal views, and of a liberal Christianity. They were like “wells without water”; “clouds that were carried about with a tempest”; they spoke “great swelling words of vanity,” and they promised “liberty” to those who would embrace their views, or freedom from the restraints of bigotry and of a narrow and gloomy Salvation. In fact, such an appeal is usually made by the advocates of error.
As well, they denied the Doctrines which the Apostles had stated respecting the end of this age. The argument on which they based this denial was the fact that all things continued unchanged as they had been from the beginning, and that it might be inferred from this that the world would be stable. They saw no change in the laws of nature; they saw no indications that the world’s system was drawing to a close, and they inferred that laws so stable and settled as those which existed in nature would continue to operate, and that the changes predicted by the Apostles were impossible.
A large part of the Epistle is occupied in meeting these errors, and in so portraying the characters of their advocates as to show what degree of reliance was to be placed on their preaching.
Even though this Epistle is characterized by the same earnest and tender manner as the first, still, the Apostle in the last two Chapters did not fail to meet these great and dangerous errors, and the style of rebuke was appropriate to the occasion.
He felt that he himself was soon to die, and, in the prospect of death, his own mind was peculiarly impressed with the solemnity and importance of coming events. He believed that the errors which were broached tended to sap the very foundations of the Christian faith, and his whole soul is roused to meet and counteract them.
The occasion required that he should state in a solemn manner what was the truth in regard to the Second Advent of the Lord Jesus; what great changes were to occur; what the Christian might look for; and his soul kindles with the sublime theme, and he describes in glowing imagery, and in impassioned language, the end of all things, and exhorts them to live as those who were looking forward to so important events.
The practical effect of the whole Epistle is to make the mind intensely solemn, and to put it into a position of waiting for the Coming of the Lord.
1  Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
Simon Peter; The name is written either “Simon” or “Simeon” (Σίμων  Simōn or Συμεών  Sumeōn). Either word means “hearing” and perhaps like other names was at one time significant. The first epistle 1Peter 1:1 begins simply, “Peter, an apostle.” The name Simon, however, was his proper name, and “Peter,” or “Cephas,” was added by Jesus, John 1:42; Matthew 16:18.
A bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ; In 1 Peter 1:1 Peter only uses the term Apostle, but here he also adds, “bondservant”. Paul also used this term in his opening of Romans and Philippians. bondservant signifying he was a servant of Jesus; a slave to the Gospel; a prisoner of the Gospel.
To those who have obtained like precious faith with us; This phrase is referring to all that are Born Again and share the same faith in Jesus Christ and believe and understand why Jesus had to go to the Cross in our place. Peter is referring to his fellow Jewish believers when he states, “with us”.
By the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ; What this is stating is that salvation through Jesus Christ was made possible by God. It was His plan for us so that we could/can be saved through a Spiritual Birth and join Him in Heaven when we die. It is made possible via the sinless nature that Jesus had, and that He avoided all temptation resulting in the perfect holy sacrifice for redemption of mans sinful nature.
2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,
With this verse Peter is telling us that by studying the Word of God and through prayer, grace and peace will be given to us more abundantly by God. The more knowledge we gain through study and prayer, the more blessings we receive. Many believers want an abundance of God's grace and peace, but they are unwilling to put forth the effort to get to know him better through Bible study and prayer. To enjoy the privileges God offers us freely, we must grow in our knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord. Just as an athlete is committed to practicing daily to get better, a Christian also has to be committed to studying God’s Word daily to gain knowledge and enhance their relationship with God. This knowledge also comes through the Sanctification process when one accepts Jesus as their Saviour.
3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,
As His divine power has given to us all things; All the effects of the gospel on the human heart are in the Scriptures, traced to the power of God. There are no moral means which have ever been used that have such power as the gospel; none through which God has done so much in changing the character and affecting the destiny of man. This divine power comes to us when we repent of our sinful lifestyle and accept Jesus as our Saviour to rule and reign our lives going forward in this life here on earth.
That pertain to life and godliness; This phrase is telling us that Jesus will give us everything we need that pertains to life, here and now and for eternity. It is through the Cross that this is possible. The power to lead a godly life comes from God, because we don't have the resources to be truly godly. God allows us to "share His divine nature" in order to keep us from sin and help to us live for Him. When we are Born Again, God, by His Spirit empowers us with His own goodness. John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 14:17-23; 2Corintians 5:21; 1Peter 1:22-23
Through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue; What this phrase is telling us is that the knowledge we gain by the acts of the Cross, we are called to Christ. If we accept this calling, meaning Jesus, it will provide “glory and virtue”. It is by a glorious Divine effectiveness” that we are called into the kingdom of God.
4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
By which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises; This promise Peter speaks of here is Salvation. It is all explained in the Word of God. Not only is Salvation explained in the Bible, but the free gift of Grace along with solutions for all of life’s problems are in the Bible, Jesus is the answer for all things.
That through these you may be partakers of the divine nature; This exceedingly great and precious promise of Salvation is implanted in the inner being of every Born Again individual when they turn from living a life of lust to please themselves. This gift of Grace is the source of a new life and actions.
Having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust; Every person is born a sinner and when a person repents of their sinning lifestyle and starts living for the Kingdom of God, the chains of corruption are broken and a new lifestyle begins. No longer does the individual want to live for the desires of the world. All of a sudden they are content with what God provides; their goals in life change; they want to serve our Lord; our old nature dies. Romans 6:6  knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. Galatians 2:20, Galatians 5:24, Galatians 6:14; Ephesians 4:22; Colossians 3:5, Colossians 3:9-10  Romans 7:24, Romans 8:3, Romans 8:13; Colossians 2:11-12  Romans 6:12, Romans 6:22, Romans 7:25, Romans 8:4
I’m going to stop here because the next few verses deal with, “Growing In Grace. We will pick up with verse five next week.

Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Sinners Prayer; Pray this, and if you believe it with your heart, Jesus will save you!
“Lord Jesus I know I am a sinner.  I confess my sins to you; I am sorry for my sins; I repent (Meaning, desiring to turn from a sinful lifestyle.) of all my sins, and I am asking for your forgiveness.  I believe that only you can forgive sin.  I commit my life to you and ask you to come into my heart, direct, and take charge of my life.  I believe that you died to set me free from my sinful lifestyle and you rose from the dead to give me eternal life, and right now you are seated at the Right Hand of God Almighty. I believe you are the Son of God; the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life, and my Savior.”  I believe this and have faith you will make a new person out of me, by sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in my heart and lead me in a new life. Proverbs 8:25-36
25  Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills, I was brought forth;
26  While as yet He had not made the earth or the fields, Or the primal dust of the world.
27  When He prepared the heavens, I was there, When He drew a circle on the face of the deep,
28  When He established the clouds above, When He strengthened the fountains of the deep,
29  When He assigned to the sea its limit, So that the waters would not transgress His command, When He marked out the foundations of the earth,
30  Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him,
31  Rejoicing in His inhabited world, And my delight was with the sons of men.
32  "Now therefore, listen to me, my children, For blessed are those who keep my ways.
33  Hear instruction and be wise, And do not disdain it.
34  Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors.
35  For whoever finds me finds life, And obtains favor from the LORD;
36  But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; All those who hate me love death."
Father God, bless us and guide us in all that we do. We ask that the Holy Spirit opens our heart and mind to fully comprehend Your Word. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of I Peter 5:8-14 NKJV
This week’s lesson Peter continues with being committed to Jesus and resisting temptation. He tells us the suffering we endure here on earth for just a short time is nothing when compared to a time table of eternity. Peter concludes this book with a farewell and a prayer of peace for all in Christ.
8  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
Be sober; Meaning to be sober-minded, watchful, vigilant. Paul also tells to be sober in Thessalonians; 1 Thessalonians 5:6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. The idea is, that the Lord Jesus, when he comes, will find the wicked sunk not only in carnal security, but in sinful indulgences, and that those who are Christians should not only to be awake and watchful as in the daytime, but also in the night. We should be just as alert in the evening and night as we are in the day time during our employment. Going out and joining in night time revelry is not being sober minded it is living in the world.
Anyone who expects to see Jesus coming soon, ought to be sober. Have you heard people say they have no time for Jesus now, but in the future when things slow up a bit they will go to church or read the Bible? The sad part about this attitude toward Jesus is that things never slow down for them and their life can be snuffed out in a moment, therefore they should be habitually sober minded at all times so they are ready. A Christian needs to lead their life in such a manner that when they are called to meet Jesus they are ready to go and have no anxiety about the life they are living.
Be vigilant; What are we to be vigilant about? It is temptation/sin and what the next phrase states; we need to be alert at all times. We are Satan’s prey; he is the predator.
Because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour; We learn from Job that the devil does go about this universe seeking the weak to claim as his own. Job 1:6-7 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.  7 And the LORD said to Satan, "From where do you come?" So Satan answered the LORD and said, "From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it." Job 2:2
Lions attack sick, young, or struggling animals; they choose victims who are alone or not alert. Peter warns us to watch out for Satan when we are suffering; being persecuted; feeling alone; weak; helpless; cut off from other believers; focused on troubles that you forget to watch for danger. These are the times when you are especially vulnerable to Satan's attacks. To resist the devil, one must keep their eyes focused on Jesus. James 4:7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Job is an excellent example for us to follow. He kept his eyes on God and resisted what his friends and wife said to him. He knew God and kept his trust in God to pull him through; he was living God’s will and that is what we need to do.
9  Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
Resist him; This is referring to the devil and all that he sets before us; temptation and sin. Satan knows our weaknesses and just the simplest things will flip that switch in our mind to get us to think about the desires of our flesh, in hopes to get us to sin. He uses the desires of our flesh to turn our eyes from God.
Steadfast in the faith; We are to confide in God; rely on him alone. The means of successful resistance are found in the resources of faith. The resources being what Jesus did on the Cross for us in our place. What we can’t do, He did for us, so that by placing our faith in the acts of the Cross we are covered with Jesus blood onto salvation. Ephesians tell us how to resist and stay steadfast.
Ephesians 6:10-17 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.  11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  12  For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.  13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.  14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,  15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;  16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.  17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
Knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world; This phrase is telling Peter’s listeners, past and present, that we aren’t alone when suffering. There is support resulting from the fact that others have endured like suffering. We can bear pain more easily if we feel that we are not alone; that it is a common thing; that we are in circumstances where we may have sympathy from others. This knowledge can be a great value to us in view of persecutions, trials, and death. The consideration suggested here by Peter to sustain those whom he addressed, in the trials of persecution, may be applied now to sustain and comfort us in every form of real calamity. We are all liable to suffering. We are exposed to sickness, bereavement, and death. We often feel as if we cannot bear up under the sufferings that may be before us, but knowing Jesus and  others have suffered like circumstances gives us strength.
10  But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.
But may the God of all grace; God is the one and only source of grace. There is no other god that can supply the grace God does when we accept His Son Jesus as our life support for the here and now, and eternity. God’s grace is the source of all spiritual comfort and help for every occasion. This verse and the next is a short prayer that Peter prayed for his listeners. A prayer of this kind by an apostle would be assurance to them the needed grace would be granted them to endure suffering.
Who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus; When God calls someone it is much more than an invitation, it is a Divine summons. God calls us to eternal glory through His Son Jesus who suffered on the Cross for us. All we have to do is accept and believe in this act of love Jesus did for us and that He rose on the third day. With Jesus resurrection He made it possible for all to partake of eternal life if they so desire by denying self, repentance, and vow to live a life for Jesus.
After you have suffered a while; This suffering pertains to persecution and the struggle a Christian has between their flesh and the Spirit. To endure this suffering for a while here on earth is minute compared to eternal happiness. When a person views the suffering this way, it doesn’t seem so bad, when the reward is Heaven.
Perfect; Perfect pertains to the trials we endure here on earth to chasten us and make us more like Jesus.
Establish; Through the suffering and chastening of our Lord we establish a solid foundation. As we grow in Christ we will build upon this foundation and become established in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Strengthen; Through suffering, chastening, and becoming establish in Jesus we will be strengthened to withstand the fiery darts that Satan throws at us. As we become rooted in the Gospel and can withstand the winds of tribulations, we are like a mighty oak with deep roots that withstands a mighty wind.
And settle you; Settle means to establish one on a firm foundation. The suggestion is to a house which is so firmly fixed on a foundation that it will not be moved by winds or floods. By studying the Bible our foundation becomes firm and settled.
11 To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
This is referencing Jesus and He is the only one of Glory. Because of the Cross Jesus has dominion forever and ever. Praise be to God!
12 By Silvanus, our faithful brother as I consider him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand.
Silvanus, or Silas was the intimate friend and companion of Paul, and had labored much with him in the regions where the churches were situated to which this Epistle was addressed. In what manner he became acquainted with Peter, or why he was now with him in Babylon is unknown.
Silas was one of the men chosen to deliver the letter from the Jerusalem council to the church in Antioch. (Acts 15:22  Then it pleased the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas, namely, Judas who was also named Barsabas, and Silas, leading men among the brethren.) He accompanied Paul on his second missionary journey (Acts 15:40-18:11), is mentioned by Paul in the salutation of Paul's letters to the Thessalonians (1Thessalonians 1:1; 2Thessalonians 1:1), and ministered with Timothy in Corinth. 2 Corinthians 1:19  For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me, Silvanus, and Timothy—was not Yes and No, but in Him was Yes. Sivanus was a faithful brother in Christ and was with Paul throughout a lot of his ministry.
13  She who is in Babylon, elect together with you, greets you; and so does Mark my son.
She who is in Babylon, elect together with you, greets you; She in this phrase is referring to fellow Christians/church in Babylon. “Elect together with you”, signifies they are followers of Jesus; Born Again Christians. They are sending greeting via Peter’s letter.
And so does Mark my son; This Mark is also called John Mark, and was known to many because he had traveled widely (Acts 12:25-13:13; Acts 15:36-41) and was recognized as a leader in the church (Colossians 4:10; Philemon 1:24). Mark was probably with the disciples at the time of Jesus' arrest (Mark 14:51-52). Peter calls him his son meaning a young faithful brother in Jesus Christ.
14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to you all who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
Greet one another with a kiss of love; A common method of an affectionate greeting in the times of the apostles. Probably not on the lips, but on the cheek.
Peace to you all who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.; This speaks of Sanctifying Peace to all that are God’s Children, which comes through the Cross of Christ.

Peter wrote this letter just before the cruel emperor Nero began persecuting Christians in Rome and throughout the empire. Afraid for his life, Peter had three times denied even knowing Jesus (John 18:15-27). But here, having learned how to stand firm in an evil world, he encouraged other Christians who were facing persecution for their faith. Peter was martyred for his faith because he lived by the words he wrote. Those who stand for Christ will be persecuted because the world is ruled by Christ's greatest enemy. But just as the small group of early believers stood against persecution, so we must be willing to stand for our faith with the patience, endurance, and courage that Peter exhibited.

Proverbs 8:13-24
13  The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate.
14  Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom; I am understanding, I have strength.
15  By me kings reign, And rulers decree justice.
16  By me princes rule, and nobles, All the judges of the earth.
17  I love those who love me, And those who seek me diligently will find me.
18  Riches and honor are with me, Enduring riches and righteousness.
19  My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, And my revenue than choice silver.
20  I traverse the way of righteousness, In the midst of the paths of justice,
21  That I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth, That I may fill their treasuries.
22  "The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old.
23  I have been established from everlasting, From the beginning, before there was ever an earth.
24  When there were no depths I was brought forth, When there were no fountains abounding with water.
Father God, chasten us so that we can be more humble like your Son Jesus. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of I Peter 5:1-7 NKJV
Peter starts this chapter out with a message to the Pastors of his era and also for our time frame. The pastors, ministers, and priests of today really need to take this to heart. Many do not preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, they preach what makes people feel good. They don’t tell the people that the lifestyle they are living will not get them to Heaven based on God’s Word. These ministers are wolves in sheep’s clothing. If they preached a gut wrenching convicting message the people would leave because in this age people don’t want to hear that they are enemies of God. Paul tells us that in his epistles that those that have not repented and asked Jesus to rule their life are enemies of God. Romans 8:5-8 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.  6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.  8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. James 4:4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
Many ministers of the Gospel probably don’t or haven’t preached on the Book of Revelation which I feel is a grave thing not to preach on. This book of the Bible has yet to be fulfilled, but many just think it is a fairytale. I believe it will happen and signs are being revealed to us on a regular basis now. So Pastors, feed the flock!
The last part of this lesson is on commands for Christians. Some more of how we are to act if we call ourselves Christians.
1  The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed:
The elders who are among you I exhort; It is evident that people were chosen to serve in the churches set up by the Apostles and those chosen were selected based on age. It is probably why the term elder is used. We know this is true because in verse five below Peter addresses the young of the congregation. These elders were probably strong in their faith of the Cross, but also had many experiences during their life. They could counsel based on scripture and relate how life and scripture are all intertwined. Elder can also pertain to being a Pastor; leader of a church. This is who Peter is addressing here is, leader or pastors of a church since he doesn’t mention bishop, priests, or deacons. In the primitive Christian church the elder had the duty to feed the flock over which the Holy Spirit had made him overseer.
I who am a fellow elder; Why does Peter consider himself a fellow elder? He considers himself a fellow elder because of his love for Jesus and what Jesus did on the Cross for him; he is being humble. As Christians we are to be humble as Jesus was humble. Peter’s identification with the elders is a good example of Christian leadership, showing that authority is based on service, not power. Mark 10:42-45 But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, "You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.  43 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant.  44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all.  45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." Peter was taking Jesus advice as he worked along with the other elders in caring for God's faithful people.
And a witness of the sufferings of Christ; This phrase is simply stating that Peter was present and saw with his own eyes the suffering that Jesus suffered in our place, because Jesus was innocent of all crimes, whereas we are the guilty ones.
And also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed; This verse gives us some insight as to Peter’s nature. He identifies himself as an equal to those he is addressing by stating he is a fellow elder. He doesn’t consider himself of higher rank because he is looking forward to the glory that will be revealed, meaning the Second Coming of Jesus. He will be a partaker just like God’s other children.
2  Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly;
Shepherd the flock of God which is among you; Peter is telling the elders to shepherd the flock, just as Jesus told him to do. John 21:15-17  So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Feed My lambs."  16  He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Tend My sheep."  17  He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You." Jesus said to him, "Feed My sheep.
Serving as overseers; The definition of overseer is; one who overlooks; a superintendent; a supervisor. This should be seen as a privilege to serve God in this capacity, but we all know some pastors, priest, and ministers that this privilege boost their pride and ego and therefore think they are better than anyone else. What comes across is that their goal is to climb the ministry ladder and that takes precedence over shepherding the flock.
Not by compulsion but willingly; What this phrase is alluding to is that and elder/pastor is to minister to the flock in a willing way. They aren’t to take on the role so they can boast about who they are; or place themselves above their Christian brothers and sisters. They should do it out of love for Christ and love for their Christian brothers and sisters and consider it a privilege to serve. Here again the two greatest commandments are brought forward; love God with all you heart, mind, soul, and strength and love thy neighbor as thy self.
Not for dishonest gain but eagerly; Do you think this is odd that Peter would warn about this? If someone truly loves God and is serving as an elder/pastor, why would Peter warn against the love of money? The Bible has many examples of filthy lucre; battles in the OT not endorsed by God were for the desire of the booty/land; Judas of Iscariot had a love of money; the rich young man that came to Jesus had a love of money; Ananias and Sapphira had a love of money.
The love of money is all around us and present day pastors, elders, and priest fall victim to the lure of money. There are those on TV that call themselves pastors that preach a prosperity message along with churches that aren’t on TV. When you hear about pastors that are asking there congregation for money to buy a big luxurious car or jet, stop and think about where their love is??? Peter is telling the elders/pastors their first love is to do the will of God, love of self takes a seat in the back of the bus.
3  nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock;
Nor as being lords over those entrusted to you; With this verse the Greek text speaks of a high-handed tyrannical rule over the flock, which is forbidden of a true Shepherd. The Sheppard is to guide, tend, and lead the flock by example; example of the Gospel and not of flesh.
But being examples to the flock; This is saying to be an example of Jesus Christ; follow the teachings of the Gospel; suppress the sin nature and lead a holy life. 1 Peter 1:15-16 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,  16 because it is written, "BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY."
4  and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.
And when the Chief Shepherd appears; The Chief Shepherd is of course Jesus Christ. When will He appear or should I say which appearance is Peter speaking of here. Peter is addressing Born Again individuals and he also references the crown of glory. He is talking about the Rapture of the Church. When this happens Born Again children of God that are alive here on earth will rise up into the third Heaven through the clouds. When this happens our bodies will be transformed into a glorified body.
You will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away; The Crown of Glory is also referred to as the Victory Crown. Anyone that receives this crown has endured life’s trials and remained faithful to God. It is a difficult thing at times, and any Born Again Christian knows what I mean, to go through the sanctification process while here on earth, is not easy. This Crown of Glory will last for eternity, and what a reward to fix our eyes on as a goal to strive for while here on earth.
5  Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE."
With this verse both young and old can benefit from Peter’s advice.
Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders; He starts out hear advising the young to listen to those who are older and wiser through studying of scripture and also life itself. Peter is speaking to the younger men of the congregation and possibly to associate pastors. The young should follow the leadership of older men and respect them.
Yes, all of you be submissive to one another; With this phrase Peter turns his attention to everyone. As a follower of Jesus we are to imitate His holy life. Jesus didn’t have the Apostles wash His feet, He washed the Apostles feet. He was on earth to serve and not to be served.
John 13:5-8 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.  6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, "Lord, are You washing my feet?"  7 Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this."  8 Peter said to Him, "You shall never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me." With this last phrase is Jesus telling Peter and us that if we aren’t humble and serve others we don’t belong to Jesus family?
And be clothed with humility, for; All Christians are to display humility if they claim to be true Christians. The elder need to listen to those younger, the young listen to the elder, and both be humble enough to admit that they can learn from others. As Christians we are to serve!
"GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE."; No matter what the age a person is, pride can rise up within a person and cause them to do or say unchristian things. Pride is a result of the fall of mankind. We inherited pride through the sin nature within each of us. It is because this pride can rise up at any time we must always be vigilant and constantly look to the Cross of Christ for strength to battle pride.
6  Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God; Peter is making this statement due to the persecution his listeners were experiencing. We know about the hard life they were having based on previous chapters. Through the hardships humility was taking a back seat and pride was emerging.
We often worry about our position and status, hoping to get proper recognition for what we do. But Peter advises us to remember that God's recognition counts more than human praise.
That He may exalt you in due time; God is able and willing to bless us according to his timing. Humbly obey God regardless of present circumstances, and in his good time, either in this life or in the next, he will honor you. So along with conducting our life in a humble manner we also must practice patience.
7  casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
God loves us more than we can comprehend and He will provide. All we have to do is remain faithful to His Son Jesus. Give all our concerns to Jesus and let Him provide what we need and not what we want. If God has saved you, you can rest assure that He will care for you. The reward we receive one day, will take our breath away.

In Jesus name I pray Amen.”
