Psalms 125:1-5 A Song of Ascents. Those who trust in the LORDAre like Mount Zion, Which cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, So the LORD surrounds His people From this time forth and forever. For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest On the land allotted to the righteous, Lest the righteous reach out their hands to iniquity. Do good, O LORD, to those who are good, And to those who are upright in their hearts. As for such as turn aside to their crooked ways, The LORD shall lead them away With the workers of iniquity. Peace be upon Israel!
Father God, give us the discernment when reading your Word to comprehend what you are saying and help us to believe your Word and not just bits and pieces. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of Hebrews 1:1-6 NKJV
This Epistle to the Hebrews was written to the Jewish believers that had given their heart to Jesus and turned away from the laws of the Old Testament (First Covenant). Whether from persecution or false teachings they were starting to waiver in their faith in what Jesus did for them on the Cross. They were starting to migrate back to the animal sacrifices, circumcision, and the ritualistic laws of old times. This letter refers back to the First Covenant and compares how the New Covenant is the replacement for the old. This book isn’t just for the benefit of the Jewish people of Paul’s time it is very much for current times too. Just as the Jewish people were falling back to their old beliefs and customs, we have modern day churches that are taking Jesus out of the Gospel and replacing it with psychology. We have church’s teaching that if you follow their rules, doctrine, and do good deeds they will be saved. Good deeds are a result of being saved and a person wanting to do them out of love, not because they will get them to Heaven. We can’t earn our way to Heaven, only faith in Jesus Christ and what He did on Calvary will get us to Heaven.
There have been great debates over who the author of Hebrews is. Some say it is Paul while others say it resembles Luke’s style of writing. Most people lean toward Paul as being the writer due to his vast knowledge of the Old Testament Laws. I also lean toward Paul because of his knowledge of the old laws and also of his revelation of Jesus Christ on the road to Damascus. Because of Paul’s knowledge he has been able to intertwine the Old Testament with the New Testament in all of his other Epistles in a fashion that makes sense. This book of Hebrews is a great book that compares both and shows us it is out with the old and in with the new. The one thing that is odd, this Epistle doesn’t start out with a greeting which is common for Paul. Hmmm!
If this book was written by Paul, which I believe it was, it was written around 65 A.D. give or take a couple years, but no later than 68, because Paul was executed in early 68 and also because the temple was still standing and there is reference to the temple. The temple/Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 A.D. It was written in Italy based on the last two verses of the book. Hebrews 13:24-25 Greet all those who rule over you, and all the saints. Those from Italy greet you.  25 Grace be with you all. Amen.
Let’s get started and see what this great Epistle has in store for us.
1  God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,
What this verse is saying is that God communicated with His people during Old Testament times in various ways. Depending on the circumstance of the people, God chose how to communicate. At one time it was by history, then by prophecy, or poetry, or proverbs, or by some solemn and special message, by visions, by dreams, by law, or by the outcome of a battle like Jericho, and sometimes directly. God spoke to Daniel through dreams and visions, Moses through a burning bush, David through Nathaniel the prophet, etc. There are many instances in the OT where God spoke, but what about now. The next verse tells us how He speaks to us now. It is the difference in the old covenant vs. the new covenant.
2  has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;
Has in these last days; In these last days is speaking about the last era of time, meaning from Jesus time to the Kingdom Age when all evil will be abolished.
Spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; In the NT Jesus speaks to us because God has appointed Him heir of all things. Jesus speaks to us through the parables He taught, the miracles He performed, the healings He did, all the verses of the NT, the OT prophesies He fulfilled, etc. He speaks and all we have to do is listen, read, and believe what He says is true and not pick and choose what we want to believe. Hebrews 2:1-4 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.  2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward,  3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,  4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will? This is why some of the Israelites did not enter into the promise land, because they were blind and could not see the truth in action and believe. It is also true for the Scribes and Pharisees in Jesus and the Apostles time, they didn’t recognize the truth, even though OT scripture was used numerous times to give credibility to what was being preached. Even our present time, people can’t recognize the truth when what is said is backed up with scripture. Jesus is deity; John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  2 He was in the beginning with God.  3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. Revelation 19:13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.
3  who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Who being the brightness of His glory; We all know that God is light, Jesus is light, and Born Again Christians are light. This phrase also speaks of Jesus deity. Throughout the Bible there are many instances where the presence of God or Jesus, light is mentioned. Paul saw a bright light on the way to Damascus, Acts 22:11; the Israelites saw the shining of Moses’ face, 2 Corinthians 3:7; celestial light surrounds the angels, Revelation 18:1 and glorified saints, Luke 9:31-32; and to the dazzling splendor or majesty in which God is enthroned; 2 Thessalonians 1:9; 2Peter 1:17; Revelation 15:8; Revelation 21:11, Revelation 21:23. “Brightness of His glory”, signifies all that God has created are not as bright as Jesus. Jesus is light of infinite perfection. He ranks above all!
And the express image of His person; The word used here - χαρακτὴρ  charaktēr - likewise occurs nowhere else in the New Testament. It is what our word “character” is derived. It properly means an “engraving-tool;” and then something “engraved” or “stamped” - “a character” - as a letter, mark, sign. Jesus is the image of God.
And upholding all things by the word of His power; This phrase tells of Jesus omnipotence. His power and all He has to do is speak things into existence. He upholds or sustains all things, that is, the universe. It is not merely the earth; not only its rocks, mountains, seas, animals, and human beings, but it is the universe, all distant worlds. How can he do this if He is not God? But He is God, He is part of the Trinity. He does it by his word, his command. One simple command and it was done. So the world was made when God “spake and it was done; he commanded and it stood fast;” Psalm 33:9. The Lord Jesus commanded the waves and the winds to be still, and they were Matthew 8:26-27; he spoke to diseases and they departed, and to the dead and they arose. Jesus has the power to do all things.
When He had by Himself purged our sins, Sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high;  “By himself, not by the blood of bulls and lambs, but by his own blood. This is designed to bring in the grand feature of the Christian scheme, that the purification made for sin was by his blood, instead of the blood which was shed in the temple service. The word rendered here “purged” means “purified” or “expiated”.  The literal rendering is, “having made purification for our sins.” The purification or cleansing which he effected was by his blood; see 1John 1:7 “The blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth from all sin.” This the apostle here states to have been the great object for which he came, and having done this, he sat down on the right hand of God; see Hebrews 7:27; Hebrews 9:12-14. It was not merely to teach that he came; it was to purify the hearts of people, to remove their sins, and to put an end to sacrifices by the sacrificing himself.” (Barnes)
What Jesus came to do He did, and when He stated it was “finished”, it was, and is now seat at the right hand of our Father.
4  having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
Having become so much better than the angels; Remember this is speaking of Jesus in human form. What did He do to become so much better than the angel and the prophets of old? It was Him being the perfect sacrifice. No other man can or could do what Jesus did. He had the power of God within that no other man or angel could ever have.
This phrase states that He “became so much better than the angels”. So was there a time when angels were more powerful than Jesus? Yes, when Jesus was in human form they were. When Jesus ascended into Heaven and sat at the right hand of God Almighty, His power was restored as it was before He came to earth. The angels ministered to Jesus at times, one being when He was in the desert.
As He has by inheritance; As a result of this sacrifice on the Cross for us Jesus was empowered by God to be the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
Obtained a more excellent name than they; What name did Jesus receive for this act of love on the Cross for us so that we would have a chance to be redeemed if we so choose to? We can find the answer to this question in Philippians. Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,  10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,  11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
5  For to which of the angels did He ever say: "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU"? And again: "I WILL BE TO HIM A FATHER, AND HE SHALL BE TO ME A SON"?
The questions posed in this verse, refers to the fact that Angels were never given the name Son. Then it is brought to the attention of the Jewish Readers several quotations from the Old Testament Scriptures (All capitalized phrases are from the OT.). The answer to the questions in Verses 5 through 13 is that God never spoke such words to an Angel, however exalted, but only to His Son the Messiah.
Have you ever thought of this? Jesus always was and always will be. He never had a birth or a death spiritually, but He did have a birth and death physically. He had to become God’s son in human form in order to be the perfect sacrifice for us so we could be redeemed by His eternal life sustaining blood. There was no other way this could take place spiritually, so He had to become man in order to shed His blood for us. This is the greatest display of Love by God and Jesus, and one that we cannot comprehend. All we have to do to receive the gift of Grace is recognize our sin nature, how awful we are in God’s eyes, repent of our ways, and ask Jesus to help us live a lifestyle modeled after His.
Here is another question to ponder. Jesus is God’s son now and for eternity, but was He God’s son before His physical birth? The answer lies in this phrase, “I WILL BE TO HIM A FATHER, AND HE SHALL BE TO ME A SON”. This phrase comes from II Samuel 7:14 which was before Jesus birth and is in the future tense, at that time Jesus was not recognized as God’s son. This means that at the particular time the prophecy was uttered, God was not known as “Father” or as “Son,” at least in the way we think. So God the Son had to be born a man in order for the New Covenant to be established for redemption.
6  But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: "LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM."
But when He again brings the firstborn into the world; The word “firstbegotten or firstborn” proclaims that God had never taken on human form or any other form of similar nature.
"LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM."; This phrase can also confuse the human mind, because when Jesus came into the world He took upon the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men, which was lower than the Angels, but still the Angels of God worshipped Him. Although Jesus was now human, He was also Deity. In other words, His Deity did not diminish at all. While He was “Man,” He was also “God.” Philippians 2:5-11 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,  6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,  7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.  8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.  9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,  10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,  11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
This can all be very mind boggling, but what we have to do is believe and place our faith and trust in Jesus. It is that simple childlike faith we need to put forth and not try to figure it out. The Word is Jesus and Jesus is the Word. All we need to do is place our faith in the Cross of Christ.
Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Sinners Prayer; Pray this, and if you believe it with your heart, Jesus will save you!

“Lord Jesus I know I am a sinner.  I confess my sins to you; I am sorry for my sins; I repent (Meaning, desiring to turn from a sinful lifestyle.) of all my sins, and I am asking for your forgiveness of all of my sins.  I believe that only you can forgive sin.  I commit my life to you and ask you to come into my heart, direct, and take charge of my life.  I believe that you died to set me free from my sinful lifestyle and you rose from the dead to give me eternal life, and right now you are seated at the Right Hand of God Almighty. I believe you are the Son of God; the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life, and my Savior.”  I believe this and have faith you will make a new person out of me, by sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in my heart and lead me in a new life. In Jesus name I pray Amen.”  (John 3:16,17; Romans 3:23; 6:23; 5:8; 10:9-13; Ephesians 2:8-10; 1 John 5:11-14; 1:6-10) (Sin: Rom. 1:22-32; Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 5:3-7)

6-11-2014 Vol. 8 Part 9 The Beatitudes How to be Happy According to Jesus (Matthew 5:10-12)

Psalms 123:1-4 A Song of Ascents. Unto You I lift up my eyes, O You who dwell in the heavens. Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, So our eyes look to the LORD our God, Until He has mercy on us. Have mercy on us, O LORD, have mercy on us! For we are exceedingly filled with contempt. Our soul is exceedingly filled With the scorn of those who are at ease, With the contempt of the proud.
Psalms 124:1-8 A Song of Ascents. Of David. "If it had not been the LORD who was on our side," Let Israel now say—"If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, When men rose up against us, Then they would have swallowed us alive, When their wrath was kindled against us; Then the waters would have overwhelmed us, The stream would have gone over our soul; Then the swollen waters Would have gone over our soul." Blessed be the LORD, Who has not given us as prey to their teeth. Our soul has escaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers; The snare is broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the LORD, Who made heaven and earth.
Father God, give us the strength to stand tall in times of persecution. Let persecution lift our spirits knowing that persecution is a sign of being one of your children. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Matthew 5:10-12 NKJV
This lesson will wrap up the Beatitudes. I don’t know about you, but they have been most enlightening to me. I have come away with a different perspective in there meaning compared to what I thought they meant. Each of the Beatitudes causes one to examine their conscience, or what I call do a Christianity check. As human beings we can drift from the truth very easily. Many things in today’s society have an impact on our thinking and rationalization on how we are to live and what we believe. The thing of it is we need to stay focused on Jesus and His word to guide us through each day. If we don’t pick up the word of God each day and spent some time in it, we will be influence by the world and follow a fleshly path instead of a spiritual path. So keep these Beatitudes in mind and you will have happiness deep inside knowing the reward of Heaven is in hand.
With this being the last lesson in this volume, I’m not going to have a lesson next week in order to get everything in order for volume 9 which will be the book of Hebrews.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.
12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
These three verses go together, therefore I will address them as if they are one. As mentioned in previous lessons many times the idea is presented to us three times in a different manner. Why? Well as the old saying goes when I was back in school I was always told when studying for an exam to read and study the material three times for it to make sense and sink in. As human beings I think we need to hear things more than one time in order for it to make an impact in our lives. I believe this is very true when it comes to the teachings of the Bible and that is why the idea is repeated several times so that we can grasp what God is telling us.

Blessed are those who are persecuted; To persecute means literally to pursue; follow after, as one does a fleeing enemy. Here it means to vex, or oppress one, on account of his religion. They persecute others who injure their names, reputation, property, or who endanger or take their life, on account of their religious opinions.
Persecution is something we as humans do not want in our lives, because our human nature desires that we be liked and accepted by fellow human beings. We want to fit in with the crowd, not look or act differently, not be criticized for what we say or how we say it. This tendency is very prevalent with children and probably each of us when growing up, have experienced rejection for something during our school years. These early year rejections and fitting in have caused us to be the person we are today when it comes to life here on earth. We tend to seek out others that we can relate to and therefore be accepted. This type of persecution is a worldly/fleshly persecution, but what this
Beatitude is referring to is a Godly righteousness, our belief, what we live by and will stand up for.
Have you ever been persecuted at work for the way you work? I have, in my working life time I worked in two different Union shops for a short period of time. I have always believed in giving an honest day’s work for the place of business and the wages. I was told to slow down I was making others look bad, or that I couldn’t do that. I was doing what was morally right, but persecuted for it. Being a Christian will bring persecution in many ways. What experience do you have being persecuted?
For righteousness’ sake; Righteous, meaning attempting to live a Godly life. One that is based on His word and also sharing the gospel with fellow human beings, which some people find offensive. These righteous individuals are children of God and are not seeking persecution, but due to the love they have found in Jesus, they want to share that love with all so that none will perish in Hell.  They do this out of love in an honest effort to be Christians, and to live the life of Christians, but others don’t see it this way and therefore persecute and revile Gods child. God’s child considers this as a blessing just like Peter and the other apostles rejoiced when they were persecuted for Christ. Acts 5:40-41  And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.  41 So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. Persecution is evidence that one is the child of God, and that He will defend us. “All that live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution,” 2 Timothy 3:12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake; Revile, meaning criticize; call you by evil and contemptuous names; ridicule you because you are a Christian. Have you ever thought about those that do the persecuting? Why do they do it? It is because they are of the world and are self-righteous; they feel they have all the answers; they live by man’s standards; they justify their lifestyle based on worldly values. They can be the nicest person you know, but when Jesus is brought up in conversation they have all the answers based on their views of what good is. They think they know what is in the Bible, even though they have never read the Bible. Here is just a few insults Jesus received from His Jewish brethren that were self-righteous, they believed in their heritage, customs, and religious rules and regulations that they devised; they said Jesus was a Samaritan and had a devil John 8:48 Then the Jews answered and said to Him, "Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?"; that he was mad John 10:20 And many of them said, "He has a demon and is mad. Why do you listen to Him?; and they reviled and mocked him on the cross, Matthew 27:39-44 And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads  40 and saying, "You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross."  41 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said,  42 "He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him.  43 He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, “I am the Son of God.”  44 Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing.
I have been criticized for being truthful in these “Food For The Spirit” lessons. The Word of God has some pretty convicting messages that our humanness does not like to hear. When I come to things that I know will not be receive well I have to ask, “Lord, do I have to say this? I’d rather not.” But I do, since the Bible is God’s revelation to us. When I do say these hard things, from time to time I will get comments from those that don’t want to believe what the Word says. What choices do I have being called to write these lessons? I could compromise and say all the nice and wonderful things to make people happy, but that wouldn’t be obedient to God, therefore I present the whole truth. I consider the comments by people a form of persecution and that I have struck a nerve in a person’s life and pray they will give the situation thought and change their opinion or lifestyle. God’s word is like a double edge sword that will cut our heart from time to time with conviction. The question we have to ask ourselves is, do we heed what the Bible says or ignore it?
The Bible says that when we suffer for righteousness, we experience growth. Many times we learn best from our mistakes, in fact some of us may learn more from our mistakes than from good things that happen in our lives. In trials and persecutions we have hope and Paul tells us that. Romans 5:1-5 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,  2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance;  4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope.  5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Spiritual thought: When was the last time you were persecuted for Jesus name? Have you ever been persecuted? If you have never been persecuted, do you have the right relationship with Jesus? Are you righteous or self-righteous? If we claim to be Christians, true Born Again Christians, then we shall be persecuted. Jesus and the Apostles tell us that many times. Philippians 1:29 For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake.
Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you; Persecution identifies us with Jesus and is the standard for blessings here on earth and in eternity. In the process of being God‘s child, we start to find persecution happening to us. Remember that the persecuted are happy because they are being prepared for Heaven. If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. 2 Timothy 2:12 If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. If we receive persecution because we love Jesus and share His commands with others, then we should rejoice and not walk away with hurt feelings. We can hold our head high in the name of Jesus and give testimony of our persecution to other Christians to build them up and give them confidence and boldness. Think of persecution as criteria for being a soldier for Jesus. It makes you a more mature Christian and your life more Christ-like. Consider persecution as a gold star, a reward for being a child of God, after all, those of God have suffered persecution forever even the prophets of the OT suffered persecution. Here in America our persecution is being called names for the most part, but in other parts of the world God’s children are being put to death for proclaiming and not denying Jesus name. Would you die for Jesus like He died for you?
These Beatitudes teach us what it takes for eternal happiness starting with the first one being, “Poor in Spirit”. If we get the first one right and give our heart and life to Jesus, then the rest of the Beatitudes will all fall into place. The reward of Heaven, and what these Beatitudes teach, is totally contrary to the ways of the world, and in many cases contrary to the modern day church.

See ya in two weeks, God Bless!

6-4-2014 Vol. 8 Part 8 The Beatitudes How to be Happy According to Jesus (Matthew 5:9)

Psalms 122:1-9 A Song of Ascents. Of David. I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go into the house of the LORD." Our feet have been standing Within your gates, O Jerusalem! Jerusalem is built As a city that is compact together, Where the tribes go up, The tribes of the LORD, To the Testimony of Israel, To give thanks to the name of the LORD. For thrones are set there for judgment, The thrones of the house of David. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: "May they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls, Prosperity within your palaces." For the sake of my brethren and companions, I will now say, "Peace be within you." Because of the house of the LORD our God I will seek your good.
Father God, we want to be peacemakers. If we aren’t then we ask that you create a contrite and clean heart in us so that we can serve you. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Matthew 5:9 NKJV
Blessed are the Peacemakers! Mankind has been looking for peace since the fall of Adam and Eve. Just read the OT and you will see unrest and fighting then just like today. Although some of that was God ridding the Promise Land of evil for His people, but there has always been someone with the thought of wanting more land and power or didn’t like a race because of a certain belief or color of their skin. All of this because of the sin nature human beings are born with. Without that gift of grace we get from God when we are Born Again we will not have true peace within that will shine forth in love thy neighbor as thy self.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God.
Many people have promoted peace throughout the years, but still the peace we have in the world is only temporal. The United States promotes a form of peace to all that arrive in the harbor and is welcomed by the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Shalom in Israel promotes, “there is another way”, in their harbor. Around the world in many nations, man promotes peace but there is very little peace. The root of the problem lies with our sin nature in wanting control, power, money, everyone to conform to our standards, etc. True peace will never happen here on earth while man is trying to fix the problem. The only true answer is making Jesus a part of one’s life on a daily basis worldwide. It is the Blessed Hope that will fix this world. When Jesus returns and sets up his ruler-ship, then and only then will true peace be possible. If man would only realize he was made by God and for God, things would be different. Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. When Jesus taught us to pray He was promoting peace at that time when he said, “Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven”. Matthew 6:10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. The saints under the alter cry out, “how long?” How long will it be before your wrath comes upon mankind. Revelation 6:10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, "How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?" God alone knows what brings peace, and He says that until we accept Jesus as our Prince of Peace there is no chance of getting out of the war zone. Strife and bickering will continue whether in nations, schools, churches, work places, families, etc.
So this Beatitude, just like the previous ones, hinges on the first one, “poor in spirit”. What Jesus is saying here is that a true peacemaker in His eyes is one that has accepted Him into their lives and is out preaching and teaching peace by means of the Gospel so that people around the world can have that true inner peace that will flow forth from them to others through love for one another. Now don’t get me wrong there are those who strive to prevent contention, strife, and war, who use their influence to reconcile opposing parties, and to prevent lawsuits and hostilities in families and neighborhoods. Everyone may do some of this; and no person is more like God than he who does it. Friends, neighbors, people of influence, lawyers, physicians, ministers of the gospel, may do much to promote peace, and sometimes early intervention in a situation can bring peace, but without the love of God within us many times it is to no avail because our flesh is too prideful. Many times we may accept a solution with our lips and not our heart, resulting in resentment which will surface at a later date. Many times without the love of Jesus within we don’t truly accept and buy into solutions.
How many times have you witnessed people disputing about something in a church, school, or at work like the color of a carpet or paint, a hymn, a parking place, or a certain issue that needs to be resolved? Sometimes these significant and insignificant things escalate and result in people not speaking to each other. Why, because it is the love of self within and not the love of God residing in ones heart. This is what this Beatitude is all about, the Gospel and what truly lies in our heart. Have you ever been in situations, or know of situations where solutions appear to be agreed on verbally by all parties, but to find out later by peoples speech and actions they only agreed with their mind and not their hearts? The self-righteous person, whether believer or not, has no peace within their heart, because they have no true peace with God. This person can be a very good person, but their self righteousness blinds their heart and they are deceived. Self-righteousness could be the worst sin there is, because pride is so deceptive.
Self-righteousness is a war that rages between us and God. Mankind constantly thinking we can save ourselves despite the fact that the Bible constantly says we are spiritually and morally bankrupt. Many times the harder we try the further we sink into the miry clay. David realized that and that is the reason he said this; Psalms 40:2 He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps. It is through these Beatitudes by means of self examination that we need to look deep inside and see where our heart is. Paul sums it up in his letter to the Philippians; Philippians 2:1-5 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy,  2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.  3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.  4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.  5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.
God’s word tells us about the nature of peace and describes at least three kinds of peace. Peace with God, Peace of God, and Peace from God. Let’s look to God’s word and see what He has to say about each of these.
Peace with God; Paul tells us in Romans that being justified by faith, we will have peace with God. Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. When we are born we are born with a depraved nature. Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. There is nothing our parents or we can do, not to be born with this sin nature. To observe this nature in action, place two 1 year old babies in a room with one toy. There will be a squabble over the toy and one will prevail over the other. No one taught them this nature they were born with it. We as parents then have to teach our children to share, don’t hit, don’t bite, don’t push, etc. This is the depraved nature at work that each of us is born with and at an early age with the help of our parents, we start learning right from wrong. But to have true peace with God, we have to be redeemed of this depraved nature. This is why Jesus came to earth to redeem those who choose to accept Him into their lives. It is through faith in the acts of the Cross that we can be justified and sanctified. Without this we cannot have true peace in our hearts and become peacemakers of God.
Peace of God; Many Christians may have peace with God, but may not have peace of God. This is very evident with all the books on the market expressing what a person must do to be happy. Many of these books are based on psychology and not Jesus. Jesus tells us He wants us to have peace in our lives, but not the peace of the world which doesn’t satisfy the soul. John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. He wants us to have inner calmness no matter what the circumstances are in our lives. Do you have inner calmness, the quiet assurance within that all is well? Can you remain peaceful in the face of chaotic circumstances? Life here on earth is like a war zone with all that life has to throw at us. Financial strain, job stress, being a spouse and parent, juggling schedules, etc., but with Jesus in our heart we can give it all to Him to resolve and give us peace. David had many ups and downs in his life, but his faith was in God to bring him through all situations. Psalms 4:1-8 A Psalm of David. Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.  2 How long, O you sons of men, Will you turn my glory to shame? How long will you love worthlessness And seek falsehood? 3 But know that the LORD has set apart for Himself him who is godly; The LORD will hear when I call to Him.  4 Be angry, and do not sin. Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still. 5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, And put your trust in the LORD.  6 There are many who say, "Who will show us any good?" LORD, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us.  7 You have put gladness in my heart, More than in the season that their grain and wine increased.  8 I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
Peace from God; God has given us a manual to guide us through life if we choose to accept what is in it. It gives us some “thou shall nots” and some “thou shalts”, but from time to time we encounter situations in our lives that present some grey areas and we don’t know what the right decision is. I’m not talking about good and bad situations, but good and better decisions. We have all had things come up in our lives where we have struggled with a decision, like a vehicle. One day you decide to trade in the vehicle and the next day you decide to do the repairs, and a battle rages within. It all boils down to the family budget and the best thing to do short and long term. In these situations it is okay to pray, “Lord, I don’t know what to do in this situation, so I’m going to go this way. Please give me your peace.” Many times we struggle with something instead of involving God, I know I do, it is our human nature that causes us to try and do it all on our own. This is why so many of us try to work our way to Heaven instead of having child like faith. Colossians 3:14-15 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.  15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.
Dr. David Jeremiah says this about peacemakers, “Christ says that those with peace will be happy, blissful, joy-filled, ecstatic people. They know in their hearts that they are at peace with God. They have a certainty that they are no longer under condemnation, but have been set free from sin. They are righteous in the eyes of God, and that allows them to become peacemakers. The man or woman who has peace can help other people find peace with God. In one sense, a peacemaker is an evangelist because he goes about finding people at war with God and sharing the peace of Christ with them. Whenever I preach the Gospel and tell people how to know Jesus Christ, I have functioned as a peacemaker. If you are sharing your faith with others, you have become a peacemaker; and the Bible says there is great joy in being a peacemaker. For me, the greatest joy I’ve known has been introducing other people to the Lord Jesus. It’ the most wonderful experience you can have. If you’re not sharing your faith, you are missing a great blessing.”
What do peacemakers do? They bring unity between God and mankind. They also bring unity between human beings. A person that is a peacemaker is blessed when they can show people how to get along, instead of competing or fighting.
Where are peacemakers needed? With the present condition of the world today, we need many Christian peacemakers. We need Christian peacemakers/counselors in our families, in our workplaces, in our schools, in our courts, in our government, in the United Nations, in our communities, in our churches, in racial disputes, etc. Without the true God, it is inevitable the end time prophecies will come true.
In closing, peacemakers will be called “Sons of God”, because they will be living and doing God’s will, and not their will.
