Proverbs 15:12-23
12  A scoffer does not love one who corrects him, Nor will he go to the wise.
13  A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance, But by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.
14  The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, But the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness.
15  All the days of the afflicted are evil, But he who is of a merry heart has a continual feast.
16  Better is a little with the fear of the LORD, Than great treasure with trouble.
17  Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, Than a fatted calf with hatred.
18  A wrathful man stirs up strife, But he who is slow to anger allays contention.
19  The way of the lazy man is like a hedge of thorns, But the way of the upright is a highway.
20  A wise son makes a father glad, But a foolish man despises his mother.
21  Folly is joy to him who is destitute of discernment, But a man of understanding walks uprightly.
22  Without counsel, plans go awry, But in the multitude of counselors they are established.
23  A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, And a word spoken in due season, how good it is!
Father God, humble those that aren’t saved and reveal to them their self righteousness that separates them from You. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Gospel of John 6:16-29 NKJV
This lesson starts out with another great miracle of Jesus walking on water and ends with the multitude finding Him in Capernaum. We leave off with the people wanting to know what type of work they can do to go to Heaven. Human nature leads people to thinking they can perform things to go to Heaven, which is a false belief/teaching.
16  Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
In the Gospel of Matthew and Mark it states that Jesus made His disciples get into a boat after the fragments of the food was gathered up. Matthew 14:22 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. With it being stated this way it is very evident that His disciples didn’t want to leave Him. Mark also record that Jesus Himself sent the multitudes away.
17  got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them.
There are two things happening here; one Jesus wanted to spend some time with His Father which John does not record, but Matthew and Mark recorded such. Matthew 14:23 And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. How long Jesus was in prayer John doesn’t tell us, but Matthew does. It was all night, not until the fourth hour Jesus went to them. (Matthew 14:25) The Jews at this time divided the night into four watches; the first was from six o'clock in the evening till nine, the second from nine to twelve, the third from twelve till three, and the fourth from three till six. It is very possible the morning twilight was starting.
The second thing is that Jesus was setting the stage for Himself to go to the Disciples in the boat via walking on water, another miracle for the Disciples to witness to strengthen their faith.
18  Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing.
Mark has more of a description of what the disciples were up against. John says it was a great wind and Mark states they were rowing into the wind. Mark 6:48 Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by. Did you notice Mark said that Jesus saw them straining? Our ever present Lord sees all things and comes to our rescue when our faith is in Him and Him only.
19  So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid.
So when they had rowed about three or four miles; This sea is about 10 mile wide so the disciple had labored all night and were only about half way. They had to be exhausted!
They saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; This phrase states they saw Jesus drawing near the boat, so they must have been able to see some distance. This also proclaims that the morning twilight was upon them.
And they were afraid; In the midst of the turbulent waves appeared the form of a man. They thought it was a spirit an apparition. It was a common belief among the ancients that the spirits of people after death frequently appeared to the living.
Being human the disciples no doubt were afraid seeing a figure walking on water coming toward them from a distance. You and I would also be fearful! You can almost see the fear in their eyes and on their faces as they lean over the edge of the boat gaping at this figure coming toward them. You can almost hear what they are saying; look what is that; it can’t be human; it is coming right at us; what are we going to do; it’s got to be a ghost; etc.
20  But He said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid."
The literal translation is, “I am; be not afraid.” He was telling them that He was the “I am” of the Old Testament; “Jehovah!” Jesus is telling the disciples and us to believe, have faith in Me and I will provide all that you need. We aren’t to worry Jesus will take care of everything for us if we have our faith rooted in Him. Jesus tells us not to worry; Matthew 6:25 "Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
21  Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.
Then they willingly received Him into the boat; John does not go into any detail as far as Peter getting out of the boat, because John’s Gospel purpose is to show that Jesus is the Christ; the Messiah; the Great I Am.
In Matthew’s version of this those in the boat believed and knew at last who Jesus truly was. Even though the feeding of 5,000 that had just taken place, this sealed beyond any doubt in the disciple’s heart, who Jesus was. Matthew 14:33 Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, "Truly You are the Son of God."
Mark stated that their hearts were “harden” and still had doubts as to who Jesus truly was, but this changed their harden hearts with Jesus walking on water and also that the sea became calm as soon as He got in the boat. They just witnessed two great miracles. Mark 6:52 For they had not understood about the loaves, because their heart was hardened.
While all of us want Blessings from the Lord, the Truth is, that we learn very little from Blessings. Most of what we learn is from hard times, difficult situations, misfortune, fear, danger, etc., and sometimes, it is an expensive lesson. Here the disciples learn through fear and seeing. When we include Jesus in all that we do, nothing is impossible when He is on board.
And immediately the boat was at the land where they were going; Here we have another episode of Star Trek, “Beam me up Scotty”. One second they were half way across the sea heading for Capernaum and the next second they are at the dock.
22  On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except that one which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone—
This verse is confusing as to what side of the sea they are on and what boats they are looking at. It is the side of the sea where the 5,000 were fed. Evidently the boats that were there or coming and going could be identified in some fashion as to where they were from and that being Tiberius. People probably identified the boats that were there the day before and only one was from Capernaum, and knew Jesus didn’t enter the boat with His Disciples, so where was He? The next few verses also tells us that the people assumed Jesus was still on their side of the sea.
23  however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks—
This verse tells us for sure that there were other boats docked. The people looking for Jesus may have even went to these boats inquiring if anyone had seen or taken Jesus to Capernaum.
24  when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
After the people searched in all places they concluded that Jesus was not there so they also boarded boat and headed for Capernaum. They probably hired the boats that were there to take them across the sea. They would naturally go to Capernaum because it was known that Jesus had made it his ministerial headquarters.
The last two words, “seeking Jesus” raises a question as to why they were seeking Jesus. Was it for deliverance from sin, victory over the flesh, drawing closer to Jesus, seeing souls Saved and Baptized in the Holy Spirit, or was it for healings, food to eat, watch miracles being performed, etc. Sad to say but most probable, for the later that would satisfy their carnality and not their spirituality.
25  And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, "Rabbi, when did You come here?"
This verse tells us that the people found Jesus at Capernaum and they were perplexed as to how He got there. They saw the Disciples get into the only boat from Capernaum, but never saw Jesus get into a boat.
With the upcoming verses we see that Jesus never answered their question. They wouldn’t have believed even if He did tell them how He got there. Can you imagine Him saying to them, “I walked on top of the water of the sea to the boat my Disciples were in, which was about half way to Capernaum, then I blinked and we were docked at Capernaum”? If He had said this, many probably would have left, but instead He started teaching and trying to get them to be more concerned with eternal life and not human life.
26  Jesus answered them and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
Here Jesus criticized the people who followed Him only for the physical and temporal benefits and not for the satisfying of their spiritual hunger. They did not really understand the Miracles, who Jesus was, and why He was there, only that He could furnished physical needs of healing and food, or material, political, and intellectual things. In no way did they see themselves as sinners needing a Redeemer, for after all, at least in their minds, they were God’s chosen people! They saw only what He did, and how it could be used by them. All they knew, is that they had eaten of miraculously-supplied Bread, and “were filled!” In other words, they did not see beyond their stomachs.
Many people use religion to gain prestige, comfort, or even political votes. But those are self-centered motives. True believers follow Jesus simply because they know He has the truth and His way is the only way to eternal live.
27  Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him."
Do not labor for the food which perishes; This does not mean that we aren’t to make an effort for physical needs (2 Thessalonians 3:10), but physical needs are secondary to spiritual needs. The food that fuels our natural needs perishes and the strength we obtain from it is soon exhausted, and has to be replenished. Spiritual food last for eternity.
But for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you; Spiritual food that supports, and nourishes our soul, endures forever. Faith in what Jesus did for us on the Cross never has to be replenished as long as our faith remains in Jesus. Jesus gives us this food when we come to the foot of the Cross in repentance of not living for Him.
Because God the Father has set His seal on Him; To seal is to confirm or approve. This is done when we set our seal or signature to a deed, or loan contract. So God the Father, by the miracles which had been performed by Jesus, showed that He had sent him; that he approved His doctrine, and approved His work.
28  Then they said to Him, "What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?"
These people here don’t understand that they can’t do good deeds, do charity work, give money, perform rituals, observe feasts, go to church on Sunday, etc. to gain eternal life. A person can’t work their way to Heaven. To work the works of God is the result of repenting of a sinful lifestyle, and then out of love for Jesus saving you, the works of God are done.
29  Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent."
It offends the self-righteous to tell them that, without Faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6); the Great work that God requires is Faith in His Beloved Son Whom He has sent; otherwise, works, however virtuous, are dead works.
Do you think these people are getting any clues as to what it takes to be Born Again?
Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Sinners Prayer; Pray this, and if you believe it with your heart, Jesus will save you!
“Lord Jesus I know I am a sinner.  I confess my sins to you; I am sorry for my sins; I repent (Meaning, desiring to turn from a sinful lifestyle.) of all my sins, and I am asking for your forgiveness.  I believe that only you can forgive sin.  I commit my life to you and ask you to come into my heart, direct, and take charge of my life.  I believe that you died to set me free from my sinful lifestyle and you rose from the dead to give me eternal life, and right now you are seated at the Right Hand of God Almighty. I believe you are the Son of God; the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life, and my Savior.”  I believe this and have faith you will make a new person out of me, by sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in my heart and lead me in a new life. Proverbs 15:1-11
1  A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.
2  The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.
3  The eyes of the LORD are in every place, Keeping watch on the evil and the good.
4  A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
5  A fool despises his father's instruction, But he who receives correction is prudent.
6  In the house of the righteous there is much treasure, But in the revenue of the wicked is trouble.
7  The lips of the wise disperse knowledge, But the heart of the fool does not do so.
8  The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, But the prayer of the upright is His delight.
9  The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, But He loves him who follows righteousness.
10  Harsh discipline is for him who forsakes the way, And he who hates correction will die.
11  Hell and Destruction are before the LORD; So how much more the hearts of the sons of men.
Father God, help us to portray your goodness in all that we say and do. Bless us and our loved ones in our daily walk. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Gospel of John 6:1-15 NKJV
This week’s lesson is about the feeding of the multitude with two fish and five loaves of bread which is one of the greatest miracles Jesus performed. There are hidden messages in these scriptures that we as Christians are to live by. Let’s see what they are.
1     After these things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.
After these things; This phrase is referring to the recent trip to Jerusalem and the great exchange of religious customs and doctrine that took place between Jesus and the Jewish Leaders. From what we read in the scriptures, Jesus did not visit Jerusalem except for the Feasts that occurred. Jesus would do this in obedience to the Law of Moses. With the hostile environment in Jerusalem toward Jesus, He avoided Jerusalem as much as He could because His time had not yet come.
Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias; This sea is referred to by many names, “Chinnereth” (Numbers 34:11), “Chinneroth” (Joshua 12:3), “Lake of Gennesaret” (Luke 5:1), as well as the “Sea of Tiberias,” and “Sea of Galilee.” Around this sea there were many small communities and the people communicated and traded with each other.
2    Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were diseased.
Then a great multitude followed Him; This multitude could have been 15,000 or more people. We know that there were about 5,000 men based on verse ten and if each man was married and each couple had children it could have easily been over 15,000.
Because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were diseased; Jesus came as a bearer of Grace meaning all that came to Him be healed. The sick, diseased, lame, blind, deaf, dumb, the withered, etc. The afflicted for miles around were coming to Jesus to be healed and those healed no doubt was spreading the word to go see Jesus the healer of all times. Jesus power was being displayed in a fashion that had never been known in all of history. Jesus was the topic of all conversations, and probably the last and first thought when falling to sleep and awakening in the morning.
Just think there is a day coming when there will be no more sickness or hunger as it is foretold by the early prophets and the wolf will dwell with the lamb; the leopard will lie down with the young goat; the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. Isaiah  11:3–10; 9:6–7
3    And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples.
This verse implies that Jesus went up on the mountain to an isolated type of place to teach His disciples.
4    Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near.
With this mention of the Passover coming up, it indicates that Jesus was nearing the end of His second year of ministry. So with His second year coming to a close, and there was still a multitude of people seeking Him out; tells us what a great time it was on earth during Jesus ministry.
5    Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?"
Hmmm, why do you suppose Jesus directed this question to Philip? Was it because he was from Bethsaida, a town about nine miles away and he might know where to obtain food? (John 1:44). Was Philip lacking something spiritual?
Jesus was testing Philip’s faith as we see in the next verse. This is a prime example for us to learn from that when the impossible seems apparent, we need to seek God for a solution through prayer, and not turn to man or mans way of reasoning to solve the problem. We may not get the issue solved the way we like, but it is the best solution. God can solve all problems if our faith is where it is supposed to be.
6    But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do.
Here we find the answer and it was definitely to test Philip’s faith. Evidently Philip needed his faith boosted up to a higher level. Jesus knew what He was going to do to feed the crowd, but he seized this opportunity to help Philip.
At what level is your faith? Is it where it should be that when issues arise you turn immediately to Jesus for the answer or try to solve it on your own? I must admit at times I fall short in faith also. Jesus always has the answer and consequently, that is why we must always seek His Face for leading and guidance.
7    Philip answered Him, "Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little."
Philip answers with a carnal answer which is all too often the way the world would respond, but it should not be the response of a child of God. Don’t let money or earthly things limit what is possible through God!
In reading the other Gospels we see it was also a lesson for the other Disciples to think spiritually and not carnally. They wanted to send the multitude away so they could go buy food for themselves. Matthew 14:15 When it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, "This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food."
8    One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him,
9   "There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?"
We see here that Philip isn’t the only one thinking carnally. I wonder if the rest of the Apostles were also thinking carnally.
When they went to get the fish and loaves from this young lad he could have refused to give what he had. He could have said this is for me to eat and if I give it up I won’t have anything to eat, go find your own food, or maybe you should have thought about what you would eat a long time before this and prepared yourself for the journey, but he didn’t and gave freely what he had. This young lad probably had been present and witnessed the healings that Jesus performed and knew Jesus was someone special and therefore gave freely what he had. It is very possible he had accepted Jesus as the Messiah, his Saviour, already.
There is a valuable lesson here being taught by Jesus, we need to have our faith in Jesus Christ for all things and always turn to Him first with our problems and also be willing to give freely what we have to Christ. We aren’t to be like Ananias and Sapphira that sold their land and then held back part of the proceeds, but give it all to Jesus. (Acts 5:1-10) If we give all to Jesus, He will give us all in return. We can’t out give Jesus!
10 Then Jesus said, "Make the people sit down." Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
When Jesus said, “Make the people sit down”, the light bulb probably then came on in the minds of the disciples that Jesus was about to feed the multitude. As with the disciple, we also seldom learn the things of God easily or quickly. I also at time and more times that I like to count have not fully trusted Him. In fact, I have given the wrong answer to Jesus many times, but yet He did not lose patience and continue to work with me, just as He does with everyone. Looking back in my life I now see things that should have been really plain to me, yet I failed to see.
So we want to scold the Disciples for their spiritual dullness, but yet most of us probably did not learn as quickly as they did. Maybe we are really scolding ourselves, because we see ourselves in them.
Have you thought about why Jesus had the people sit down? By sitting down the people would be in a teaching posture and they were about to experience one of the greatest lessons of Jesus ministry, faith in what Jesus could do for them if they believe.
11   And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted.
And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks; This represents the beginning of this Miracle. Jesus giving thanks to His Father for the food that they were provided from above is an example for us to always give thanks for the food we have to eat whether at home or in a restaurant.
The type of “loaves” mentioned here, were “barley loaves,” which were the most coarse and therefore, the most humble type of food. These five loaves represent Jesus not only humbly but also by the number five. Five is the number of God’s gift to us. Jesus had five parts to His Name, Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6) and suffered five wounds at Calvary, whip, thorns, nails, spear, and beard plucked all for us.
He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; The bread and fish were given to the disciples to distribute. Just as Jesus commissioned the disciples to distribute the Gospel, in a like manner they are distributing manna from Jesus.
And likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted; Some say the fish represent the souls of mankind, and if so, then the 5 loaves and 2 fish add up to 7 which is Gods number of completion. When a person comes to Jesus their life is complete.
12  So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, "Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost."
What this verse is telling us by Jesus is that we are not to be wasteful. Jesus could produce food many times and in abundance, but we aren’t to misuse what we have or what has been provided to us.
13 Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.
How can one begin with five loaves and two fishes, feed fifteen to twenty thousand people, giving them as much as they desired, and then finish up with twelve basketfuls of leftovers?
This is what makes living for Jesus light years ahead of any of the religions in the world. There is Miracle Working Power attached to Christ, when one lives for Jesus and His will.
God gives in abundance. He takes whatever we can offer him in time, ability, or resources and multiplies its effectiveness beyond our wildest expectations. If you take the first step in making yourself available to God, he will show you how greatly you can be used to advance the work of his Kingdom.
14 Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, "This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world."
This verse seems innocent by itself, but in reading the next verse we see that those making this statement may have had evil in their hearts and thinking how they could use Jesus as their king for their gain and not what Jesus was on earth to do. Little did they know that if they repented and accepted Jesus into their heart they would have had all they needed for the rest of their life on earth and for all of eternity.
15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.
Jesus perceived what was in the hearts of those men which was all about worldly things; therefore He vanished again from the crowd. His mission was about salvation by faith and nothing about worldly kingship.
Next week’s lesson will be about the miracle of walking on water.

Proverbs 14:25-35
25  A true witness delivers souls, But a deceitful witness speaks lies.
26  In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, And His children will have a place of refuge.
27  The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, To turn one away from the snares of death.
28  In a multitude of people is a king's honor, But in the lack of people is the downfall of a prince.
29  He who is slow to wrath has great understanding, But he who is impulsive exalts folly.
30  A sound heart is life to the body, But envy is rottenness to the bones.
31  He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, But he who honors Him has mercy on the needy.
32  The wicked is banished in his wickedness, But the righteous has a refuge in his death.
33  Wisdom rests in the heart of him who has understanding, But what is in the heart of fools is made known.
34  Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.
35  The king's favor is toward a wise servant, But his wrath is against him who causes shame.
Father God, we are born with the sin nature, you and only you are the cure. Pierce the hearts of unbelievers with your Words to convict and bring them home to you. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Gospel of John 5:36-47 NKJV
We left off last week with Jesus bringing John the Baptist into the conversation with the Jewish leaders, and John as a witness to who Jesus is. Jesus doesn’t need John as a witness, because of all the miracles Jesus was performing, but the leaders rejected the works of Jesus. This chapter ends with Jesus telling the leaders they search scripture for the truth but when they find it they reject it; He tells them they have a wick heart toward God and they really don’t know God. They can quote scripture but don’t live it, in other words they are lost. Their outward appearance, speech, and actions fool those around them, but what is in their heart is enmity toward God. This is oh so true today also! Where do you stand with God?
36  But I have a greater witness than John's; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me.
But I have a greater witness than John's; John was a great witness, but here Jesus is stating that what He does is a much greater testimony as to who He is.
For the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do; The works Jesus is speaking of here is the miracles He was performing, healing the sick and raising the dead. These miracles were given by God for Jesus to do; they were entrusted into His hands. These things Jesus did because He did His Fathers will and not mans will.
These works or miracles bore witness of him; that is, they showed that he was sent from God, because none but God could perform them, and because God would not give such power to any whose life and doctrines he did not approve.
The word “finish” has special meaning here and it is the reason that Jesus protected His life at times and vanished from the crowds. He had many tasks to complete for His Father and when He expired on the Cross, He at that point exclaimed it is finished. John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
Bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me; The miracles which Jesus performed were such as no human being could work, and no angel. He that could raise the dead must have all power, and he who commissioned Jesus, therefore, must be God.
37  And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form.
And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me; This phrase Jesus is telling the leaders that God had bore witness as to who Jesus was by the miracles which Jesus had performed; of the conversation that was taking place; at the baptism of Jesus, where he said, “This is my beloved Son,” Matthew 3:17; and in the prophecies of the Old Testament.
You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form; In essence, Jesus is saying that these Jews to whom He was speaking believed that God existed, even though they had never heard His Voice or seen His Shape; therefore, why should they not believe the One sent by the Father, which the Miracles and Deliverances performed by Jesus, proved who He was?
Jesus is affirming that God had given sufficient evidence of his divine mission, but they had disregarded it. The words “heard his voice” is to be understood in the sense of “obey” or listen to, but these leaders had a deaf ear, rejected Jesus, and believed in mans doctrine. So what god did they believe in?
38  But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe.
Jesus really starts to rebuke these leaders now. The words He uses are not kind words in fact He is accusing and attacking these leaders. Do you think at this point Jesus might be getting a little frustrated and angry with these leaders?
But you do not have His word abiding in you; This phrase is referencing Gods Law or Word and the fact that these leaders did not have it in their heart; it was just head knowledge of God and the Word. In other words they did not regard or obey it. This was the “third” thing that he charged them with. 1.) They had not obeyed the command of God. 2.)           They had not regarded his manifestations, either in the times of the old dispensation, or now through the Messiah. 3.) They did not yield to what he had said in the revelation of the Old Testament. How many people of today are the same as these leaders? They know Jesus with their mind and not their heart, therefore live in this world conforming to the laws of the world.
Because whom He sent, Him you do not believe; God had foretold that the Messiah would come. He had now given evidence that Jesus was he; but now they rejected him, and this was proof that they did not regard the Word of God. The rejection of Christ by the religious leaders of Israel demonstrated not only ignorance of God, but hostility to Him.
39  You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.
You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; The word “search” translated here means to “search diligently” or “search anxiously.” These leaders were students of the Old Testament Scriptures. They searched the scriptures for a nugget, like a miner diligently searches for a nugget of precious metal. Based on Jesus comment here it appears that these leaders believed that by diligently studying Scripture they could obtain eternal life. They studied the OT Scripture for laws and not for the examples of living by faith.
The Bereans also searched the Scriptures, but to identify what was true or false.  Acts 17:11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. Timothy is said from a child to have “known the holy scriptures, which are able to make us wise unto salvation,” 2 Timothy 3:15  and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. Early life is the good time to search the Bible, for they who seek the Lord early shall find him. What a true statement this is that in the early forming years of youth a person is more willing to come to Jesus than in the years of the aged.
You see you can be like these leaders Jesus is speaking to, or be like Timothy and the Bereans. You can read the Bible like a story book or read it in search of the truth that will set you free. You need to read it with you heart and not your mind.
And these are they which testify of Me; They, meaning the forefathers of the OT bore witness to the Messiah. They predicted his coming, and the manner of his life and death, Isaiah 53:1-12; Daniel 9:26-27, etc. The entire story of the Bible is “Christ and Him Crucified”.
40  But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.
It has been said that this is the saddest statement ever made. Not only would Israel not come, but also most of the world for all time.
Jesus is the life source for eternal life and the only life source. This verse proclaims He is the only source, eternal life cannot be obtained through Mohammed, Confucius, Buddha, Joseph Smith, or anyone or anything else for that matter! He is the giver of eternal life if a person will come to Him in repentance. A person has to seek out Jesus with their heart to be saved; they have to have the will to be saved. John 3:16; Revelation 20:11–15
41  "I do not receive honor from men.
Jesus did not look for any honor, praise, atta boys from people. He was here on earth to do His Fathers will and to carry out God’s plan of salvation; to be the ultimate sacrifice; to start the New Testament. This should be our criteria as well to please God and not man if we call ourselves Christians. It shouldn’t matter what people think about us, but it does. Here in the United States many people go to great measures to make sure they, their houses, yards, vehicles, etc. are spotless to make a good impression with their neighbors, but curse, blaspheme God, lie, steal, gossip, etc. and never think anything about pleasing God.
42  But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you.
The reason why people do not love God is because they have no regard for his character, wishes, or law. They are more concerned in keeping mans laws and receiving praise from man. If one is truly Saved, one will truly have the Love of God in their heart.
43  I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.
I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; This phrase proclaims the real reason they did not receive Jesus, it is because they did not know the Father, despite their claims. They claimed to know the Father, but they only knew Him with a head knowledge and not a heart knowledge.
If another comes in his own name, him you will receive; This actually speaks of the coming Antichrist, as well as all other False Messiahs. Mankind is more apt to accept other humans and what they say and do over spiritual matters.
44  How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God?
How can you believe, who receive honor from one another; Jesus makes a bold claim here that is directed at the Jewish leaders. He tells them they are students of praise, and live for pride, ambition, and vain glory. This desire, Jesus says, was the great reason why they would not believe in Him. They were unwilling to renounce their worldly honors, and become the followers of one so humble and modest as He was. The great reason why multitudes do not believe is their attachment to human honors, or their pride, and vanity, and ambition.  These are so strong, that while they continue they cannot and will not believe.
And do not seek the honor that comes from the only God; Meaning the praise, the glory, the approval of God. The honor which comes from men is their praise, flattery, commendation; the honor that comes from God is His approval for doing His will. Only God can award the honors of heaven, the reward of having done our duty here.
45  Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust.
Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; Actually means that they are already accused.
There is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust; This phrase points to the Scriptures. These Religious Leaders claimed to obey the Law of Moses, and held up this claim as an example. But Jesus tells them, they are not obeying the Law of Moses, and they are only using Moses as a front for their hypocrisy. Jesus is actually saying, what Moses said will condemn them in the Judgment.
46  For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me.
Moses wrote of the Messiah, clearly foretold his coming, and commanded them to hear him. They did not do it and disregarding his commands. Had they obeyed Moses commands they would have recognized Jesus as the Messiah.
47  But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"
Jesus bluntly tells these leaders to their faces that despite their claims, they were, in fact, unbelievers. All of their religious laws and actions were but a masquerade party. At heart they did not believe the Bible any more than the heathen.
What may we learn; 1.) That many men who profess to believe the Bible have really no regard for it when it crosses their own views and inclinations. 2.) It is our duty to study the Bible, that we may be established in the belief that Jesus is the Messiah. 3.) The prophecies of the Old Testament are conclusive proofs of the truth of Christianity. 4.) He that rejects one part of the Bible, will, for the same reason, reject all. 5.) The Saviour acknowledged the truth of the writings of Moses, built His doctrine upon them, appealed to them to prove that He was the Messiah, and commanded men to search them. We have the testimony of Jesus, therefore, that the Old Testament is a revelation from God. He that rejects His testimony on this subject must reject his authority altogether; and it is vain for any man to profess to believe in the New Testament, or in the Lord Jesus, without also acknowledging the authority of the Old Testament and of Moses.
We have in this chapter an instance of the profound and masterly manner in which Jesus could meet and silence his enemies. There is not anywhere a more conclusive argument, or a more triumphant meeting of the charges which they had brought against him. No one can read this without being struck with his profound wisdom; and it is scarcely possible to conceive that there could be a more distinct declaration and proof that he was equal with God.
In Jesus name I pray Amen.”
