Psalms
126:1-6 A Song of Ascents. When
the LORD brought back the captivity of Zion, We were like those who dream. Then
our mouth was filled with laughter, And our tongue with singing. Then they said
among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them." The
LORD has done great things for us, And
we are glad. Bring back our captivity, O LORD, As the streams in the South.
Those who sow in tears Shall reap in joy. He who continually goes forth
weeping, Bearing seed for sowing, Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing,
Bringing his sheaves with him.
Father God, thank you for enlightening
us to the rank and duties of your ministering Angels. Bless and guide us during
this 4th of July Holiday and I ask for special blessings for anyone that
reads these lessons. May they find peace and comfort in your Word. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of Hebrews 1:7-14
NKJV
We left off last week with Paul
informing his listeners, the Jewish believers, just who Jesus was. He uses OT
scripture quotes from the prophets of old to verify what he is saying. He talks
about the rank of angel’s vs. Jesus; the deity of Jesus; that He was the Son of
God by means of His incarnation; that angels worship Jesus; that Jesus was not
referred as the Son of God in the OT, but when He became man He was and is now
called the Son of God.
People dispute this fact and say the
Son of God always was and always will be. I agree 100%, but during OT times
Jesus was not known as the Son of God or was referred to as the Son of God by
the people of OT times, He was the Word. John 1:1-14 verifies this along with Revelation
19:13. We use the
name of Jesus and the Son of God when thinking about the OT scripture, which is
normal, and there is nothing wrong with that, but He didn’t become the Son of
God until the incarnation. I hope this makes sense to you!
The rest of this chapter goes on
explaining the rank and duties of angels vs. Jesus and all backed up with OT
scripture which is in capitalization, so let’s move on with this chapter.
7 And of
the angels He says: "WHO MAKES HIS ANGELS SPIRITS AND HIS MINISTERS A FLAME
OF FIRE."
And of the angels He says; The Apostle, Paul, continues on in an
attempt to prove to the Jews that Christ is superior to angels. He continues to
use the Scriptures of the OT which they profess to believe. In all of Paul’s
writings he uses the OT scripture, especially when speaking to his Jewish
brethren. Everything in the OT scriptures point to the New Covenant, and if a
person doesn’t understand what and why Jesus died on the Cross for us, then
they will not understand the OT.
I
can attest to this fact. Before I was Born Again I could not understand the OT,
it didn’t make sense to me. After I surrendered my life to Jesus, all of a
sudden I could make the connections and see how the OT pointed to the NT and
vice versa. It was truly a revelation to me. Truly Born Again Christians
experience this in their life when they are regenerated. Many people claim to
be Born Again, but if their life does not change, meaning the old habits don’t
die, then they have experienced a false conversion.
WHO MAKES HIS ANGELS SPIRITS AND HIS
MINISTERS A FLAME OF FIRE; This
phrase is taken from Psalms 104:4. There are 50 Psalm’s that are
authorless and this is one of them. This Psalm is all about the attributes of
God as seen in the realm of nature.
“Spirits”
in the Greek is “pneuma,” and means “wind, spirit, messenger.” Here the meaning
is “winds.” Angels serve God in many ways, in other words they are ministers of
God. Many think the word “ministers” in this phrase refers to preachers, but
that isn’t the case here it is referring to Angels. Angels service can change
and does change by the decree of God. They are there to serve and do God’s will
in, any form, function, or in any capacity.
8 But to
the Son He says: "YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER; A SCEPTER OF
RIGHTEOUSNESS IS THE SCEPTER OF YOUR KINGDOM.
This
quotation is taken from Psalm 45:6. The nature of this Psalm has three
points; First, it is a “Maschil psalm” (a psalm designed to give instruction).
Second, it is “a song of loves” (a song dealing with love). Third, it is “a
Messianic Psalm” (a psalm prophesying things concerning the Messiah). Although
historically this psalm probably deals with the triumphant and glorious reign
of Solomon, prophetically it deals with the triumphant and glorious Millennial
reign of Christ. The historical reign of Solomon is a faint type of the
prophetical reign of Christ. Many of the statements of this psalm go beyond
Solomon and his reign, and are true only when they are referred to Christ and
His coming Millennial reign.
“Your
throne, O God”, is referring to the throne of God, which also points to the
fact that Jesus is God the Son and that He will reign forever and ever. It is
pointing out that Jesus is supreme over all. His reign will be in the kingdom
of righteousness (The Kingdom Age) and the rule will be of a righteous nature.
There won’t be any gray areas, or excuses of the way a person was raise, it
will be black and white according to God’s laws.
9 YOU HAVE
LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HATED LAWLESSNESS; THEREFORE GOD, YOUR GOD, HAS
ANOINTED YOU WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS MORE THAN YOUR COMPANIONS."
This verse is from Psalm
45:7.
YOU
HAVE LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HATED LAWLESSNESS; We
know that Jesus loved righteousness and hated sin because He kept the law
perfectly. God the Father acknowledges this at Jesus baptism when he said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well
pleased." Matthew 3:17 Have you ever thought that is why God
said this?
THEREFORE GOD; This refers to the Man Christ Jesus,
God the Son.
YOUR GOD; This refers to God the Father.
HAS ANOINTED YOU WITH THE OIL OF
GLADNESS; “Anointed” is the translation of the
Greek “chrio” which is always used in
the New Testament of the Anointing with the Holy Spirit.
“Oil” in the Greek is “aleipho,” but here has a different
meaning than usual. Here the oil of joy refers not to literal oil as usual with
this particular Greek word, but to the Holy Spirit who bestows joy, and thus
the Greek word “chrio,” is used
appropriately here.
Our
Lord was anointed with the Holy Spirit for His threefold Office of Prophet,
Priest, and King, at His Baptism in the River Jordan, which was at the time of
His entrance into His Ministry.
MORE THAN YOUR COMPANIONS; This is referring to Jesus being
anointed with oil of gladness, and not angels.
10 And:
"YOU, LORD, IN THE BEGINNING LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH, AND THE
HEAVENS ARE THE WORK OF YOUR HANDS.
This
quote is taken from Psalm 102:25. It is “a Prophetic-Messianic Psalm”
(a psalm which at the time of its writing was prophecy to be fulfilled by the
Messiah at the time of His first advent). The Psalmist, whoever he was, no
doubt speaks words which reflect his own afflictions and sufferings but he is
led by the Holy Spirit to speak words which go beyond his own experience to
reflect the afflictions and sufferings of Christ during the last few hours of
His life here on the earth.
YOU, LORD, IN THE BEGINNING LAID THE
FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH; This
is still speaking of Jesus Christ and who He is. Paul is pulling all that he
can from the OT in order to get his Jewish brethren to see that Jesus is the
Messiah. The word “beginning” corresponds with Genesis
1:1. It has to do
with the creation of the Earth, and the universe. It has nothing to do with
God, for God has no beginning. “The unchangeable and eternal power and majesty
of the Son, spoken of in Verses 11–12, find their basis in the fact that He is
the One Who laid the foundation of the Earth and fashioned the Heavens.”
(Wuest)
THE HEAVENS ARE THE WORK OF YOUR
HANDS; The phrase,
“works of your hands,” is not to be taken literally, only meaning that Christ
is the Creator. Actually, the Lord spoke creation into existence (Hebrew
11:3). The Heavens
include everything in the universe except earth. Only someone of deity has the
power to create what exist through speech.
11 THEY WILL
PERISH, BUT YOU REMAIN; AND THEY WILL ALL GROW OLD LIKE A GARMENT;
This
quote is taken from Psalm 102:26. It was written some 800 – 1,000
years before Jesus. These words could have been uttered by the Father to the
Son as He hung on the Cross.
Here again Paul is
conveying that Jesus will remain forever, but creation will grow old, and at
some point in time, meaning after the Millennial reign, the Heavens and Earth
will be renewed. Heavens, earth, and Gods children (Born Again Saints) will be
all regenerated and live a life as God intended. Revelation 21:1-3 Now I saw a
new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed
away. Also there was no more sea. 2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem,
coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her
husband. 3
And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of
God is with men, and He will
dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.
12 LIKE A
CLOAK YOU WILL FOLD THEM UP, AND THEY WILL BE CHANGED. BUT YOU ARE THE SAME,
AND YOUR YEARS WILL NOT FAIL."
This
quote is taken from Psalm 102:26-27. This verse is a continuation of the
last verse, further stating Jesus will remain the same, whether it be 2,000
years ago, today, or tomorrow. God does not change, we as human beings change
our interpretation of God’s laws so that we can live a lifestyle that goes
against what His Word the Bible teaches. Malachi 3:6 "For I
am the LORD, I do not change……..
Hebrews 13:8
Jesus Christ is the same
yesterday, today, and forever.
A change is coming for all
creation, with everything being cleansed by fire, and once again made new. The
changes for humans is regeneration into a new lifestyle when one accepts Jesus
as their Saviour and places their life in His hands, (Born Again John
3:3-7) or, they can continue
living the way they are and be consigned to Hell forever at the Great White
Throne Judgment. Revelation
20:11-15 Then I saw
a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the
heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw
the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And
another book was opened, which is the
Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the
things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death
and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each
one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of
fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life
was cast into the lake of fire.
13 But to
which of the angels has He ever said: "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, TILL I MAKE
YOUR ENEMIES YOUR FOOTSTOOL"?
This
quote is from Psalm 110:1.
This Psalm is a Prophetic/Messianic/Millennial Psalm (a psalm which is
prophetic of the office and the work of the Messiah during the Millennium). It
points to the King/Priest ministry of Christ during the Millennium.
The
sitting of Jesus portrays the work is finished. Even though the work is
finished, all the results of the work have not yet happened. The finale will be
at the conclusion of the Millennial Reign, when Satan will be forever defeated
and cast into the Lake of Fire. There he will remain forever with all of his
followers of evil. (Revelation 20:10–15).
This
verse also speaks of Jesus authority over all of creation, because God never
said anything like this to and angel. No matter how beautiful or powerful an
angel is, God the Son is of a much greater authority.
The
phrase, “Until I make your enemies your footstool,” refers to God making all of
Jesus enemies powerless. This phrase comes from OT times. When a tribe would
overtake another tribe it was customary for the leader of the victor, to stand
on the throat of the defeated king. The enemies here being referred to are the
enemies of God’s Ways, the unrighteous. I Corinthians
15:24–28
14 Are they
not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit
salvation?
Are they not all ministering spirits
sent forth to minister; This
clearly states that angels are servants of God and administer the will of God.
They take their orders from God and not man. Is it possible that they take
massages to God for us? I think it is possible, but Jesus is our true mediator
between God and us and He is the one we need to converse with.
What
other ministering do they do? The Bible has these recorded and I’m sure there
are many more. They rejoice when someone repents and accepts Jesus. Luke
15:10 They are
guardians of little children. Matthew 18:10 They have a special interest in all
that relates to the Redemption of man. I Peter 1:12 They come to our aid in times of
temptation to strengthen us. Luke 22:43 They also attend the dying Saints. Luke
16:22 Did you know
they did all these things? Jesus said He could call a legend of angels to help
Him, maybe sometimes we need to ask Jesus to send us some of His army when we
are in need?
For those who will inherit salvation; This statement states that they
minister to those that will accept Jesus as their Saviour. First thought is
this seems a little harsh if they only minister to those that will inherit
salvation, but remember, God knows who will be saved and who has a heart of
stone, so therefore looking at it from that perspective it makes sense. Angels minister
to the saved and those that will be saved.
So are you convinced of Jesus rank and
Deity, or are you like Paul’s Jewish Brethren?
Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created
that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible,
whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All
things were created through Him and for Him.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of
the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is
born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Sinners Prayer; Pray this, and if you believe it with
your heart, Jesus will save you!
“Lord Jesus I know I
am a sinner. I confess my sins to you; I
am sorry for my sins; I repent (Meaning, desiring to turn from a sinful
lifestyle.) of all my sins, and I am asking for your forgiveness of all of my
sins. I believe that only you can
forgive sin. I commit my life to you and
ask you to come into my heart, direct, and take charge of my life. I believe that you died to set me free from
my sinful lifestyle and you rose from the dead to give me eternal life, and
right now you are seated at the Right Hand of God Almighty. I believe you are
the Son of God; the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life, and my
Savior.” I believe this and have faith
you will make a new person out of me, by sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in my
heart and lead me in a new life. In Jesus name I pray Amen.” (John 3:16,17;
