The Ten Commandments
02-23-2011 Vol. 3 Part 13
Psalm 31:7-14 NKJV I will be glad and rejoice in Your mercy, For You have considered my trouble; You have known my soul in adversities, And have not shut me up into the hand of the enemy; You have set my feet in a wide place. Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am in trouble; My eye wastes away with grief, Yes, my soul and my body! For my life is spent with grief, And my years with sighing; My strength fails because of my iniquity, And my bones waste away. I am a reproach among all my enemies, But especially among my neighbors, And am repulsive to my acquaintances; Those who see me outside flee from me. I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind; I am like a broken vessel. For I hear the slander of many; Fear is on every side; While they take counsel together against me, They scheme to take away my life. But as for me, I trust in You, O LORD; I say, "You are my God."  Jesus I pray in your name for all the victims of the earthquakes, floods, and other natural disasters that are occurring around the world. Please comfort and console those that have lost loved ones. Jesus we raise you up and praise your most Holy and Precious name.  Amen.
Exodus 20:17 NKJV  "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's."
A teenage boy was taken into juvenile court for stealing a car, which he later crashed. When in court  the judge asked him why he stole the car, here's what he said: "Every day I used to walk by this house and see this beautiful sports car. And I used to think, man would I like to have that! Every day after I'd see the car, I'd walk up the street and sit on the park bench and imagine myself behind the wheel. Sometimes I'd actually feel like I was driving it, holding my hands like they were on the steering wheel, going around curves and everything. One night after supper when it was just beginning to get dark, I sneaked up to look inside the windows of the car to see what the car was like inside. To my surprise, the keys were in the ignition. I just couldn't resist."
Basically, this young man violated two of the Ten Commandments. The one that says, "Thou shalt not steal"; and the last one which warns, "Thou shalt not covet ... ". The sin of covetousness is the root cause of many other sins. When a person covets, he has the want of something that does not belong to him. It is the evil craving or desire of something so intense that is not yours. Remember a few lessons back I talked about “desire”. If we let desire run rampant without stomping on it right away, it may lead to sin by actions. As we will find out in this lesson, the thought or desire is sin in itself. Do you remember what happened to David when he saw Bathsheba? 2 Samuel 11:2-4 NKJV  Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king's house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold.  3  So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, "Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?"  4  Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house. He let the desire overcome him and committed Adultery along with Murder.
To make sure no one would misunderstand what He was talking about, the Lord spelled out some of the things we are not to covet: "thy neighbor's house, thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor anything that is thy neighbor's."
Notice three things in particular about this 'commandment of the Lord:
1.)   It is possible to covet (want badly) both people and things.
2.)   God's people are not to covet "anything" that belongs to someone else.
3.)   The word "neighbor" as used in Scripture refers not just to the person next door or in your neighborhood but to all other people (Luke 10:29-37 NKJV But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Then Jesus answered and said: "A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.' So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?" And he said, "He who showed mercy on him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." ).
Consider too, that this commandment is the only one of the ten that deals with the motive or thought instead of the act or deed. Every evil act begins in the mind or heart. Jeremiah, the prophet, recognized this fact when he wrote, Jeremiah 17:9 NLT  "The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? God wanted us to realize that wrong thinking is just as sinful, as wrong doing. Evil thoughts and evil deeds go hand in hand.
Jesus too, taught against evil thoughts and motives. He said, Matthew 15:19 NLT  For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. Did you notice that "evil thoughts" are right at the top of the list? You know why? All evil actions begin with evil ideas. In this one verse, Jesus mentions six of the subjects dealt with in the ten commandments. And all of them begin with evil thoughts. Jesus used even stronger language in Luke 12:15 NLT  Then He said, "Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own."  He then gave the illustration of a wealthy farmer who had all the riches and goods he could ever need. But still he wasn't satisfied. So interested and involved was this man in acquiring material things that he had no time for God and spiritual things. His greed cost him the loss of his soul. Jesus called this man "a fool"!
Have you ever wanted something so bad and when you get it you are on cloud nine, but then in a few days you see a similar item and then wish you had that. Like a laptop computer for instance, you have had your eye on a certain model and then you get it and you are really happy. In a few days you see and advertisement for a laptop that has all the features of the one you just got, but this new model has the one feature you wished laptops had, but wasn’t available at the time of purchase. Now you start wanting that computer (Covetousness sets in.). You see, once coveting starts, you are never satisfied. Contentment slips out the back door. We have to be very careful of this commandment. We are to be content with ourselves, what we have, and with what God provides for us. A covetous individual lives in the world with a view of what the world owes them (me, myself, and I). This takes an individual’s eyes and mind off of God and also causes sin by making materialistic things an idol or practicing idolatry. Colosians 3:5 NLT  So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don't be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.
Why do people steal? Because they "covet" something they see in a store window, or something they see on television or something that belongs to a friend. Coveting usually comes first (desire) and drives a person to steal. The saddest fact of all is this: Things don't satisfy (2 Corinthians 4:18 NKJV  while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal). The best evidence of the emptiness of great wealth or great possessions is the fact that the highest suicide rate exists among the rich and not the poor. More wealthy people take their own lives than do poor people. Why, money and material possessions simply do not satisfy the hearts of men. Only God can do that!
Is it wrong to want anything, or to wish for anything? Not necessarily, to want and even wish to be a better Christian, a better witness, or a stronger testimony for the Lord is not wrong. Longing to see someone get saved or get right with God is good. Even to wish for a certain amount of material things is not necessarily wrong, unless the motive is purely selfish and these things are more important to you than the things of God. If you have a good job and can afford the finer things of this world, but don’t give 10% of the gross to God, live your life as a Christian, participate in your church functions, or participate in functions for the community to help the less fortunate, then who are you living for?  Here's what Paul wrote on the subject: 1 Timothy 6:6-8 NLT  Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.  7  After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can't take anything with us when we leave it.  8  So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. These are sound principles, if we have food, shelter, and clothing, the necessities of life, this is enough. I feel that anyone that plays the lottery is looking for something other than God. I’ve heard people say if they won the lottery they would have security. Their security would be in the money which will turn into greed and the want of more money. When you have lots of money it gets spent and then you need more. It is a never ending battle. 1 Timothy 6:9-10 NLT  But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction.  10  For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
Think of this: How much time do you spend thinking and working on spiritual things compared with the time you devote to earthly and material thoughts and deeds? Most people just don't put Christ first in practice, in their daily lives. Even when they attend church services, their minds are on other things. Is this true of you? The wise man said: "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he." (Proverbs 23:7). Discover what you think about most and you will usually find this is the thing you love the most or want the most. Paul states this to Timothy, the answer for a Christian, 1 Timothy 6:11-12 NASB  But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.  12  Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
In closing we must be content with what God provides for us. Paul didn’t know what contentment was until Jesus converted him. Philippians 3:7-9 NLT  I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done.  8  Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ  9  and become one with Him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God's way of making us right with Himself depends on faith.
This concludes the study of the Ten Commandments and will be the last study until after the Streator Revival is over. At that time I will do a study on the Lord’s Prayer which I’m very excited about.
My God, How Great Thou Art!                   Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords!

Last Week’s Trivia: Where there actually dragons in biblical times?
Answer: Job 41:1-34 NLT  "Can you catch Leviathan(BDB Definition: 1) leviathan, sea monster, dragon; 1a) large aquatic animal; 1b) perhaps the extinct dinosaur, plesiosaurus, exact meaning unknown) with a hook or put a noose around its jaw?  2  Can you tie it with a rope through the nose or pierce its jaw with a spike?  3  Will it beg you for mercy or implore you for pity?  4  Will it agree to work for you, to be your slave for life?  5  Can you make it a pet like a bird, or give it to your little girls to play with?  6  Will merchants try to buy it to sell it in their shops?  7  Will its hide be hurt by spears or its head by a harpoon?  8  If you lay a hand on it, you will certainly remember the battle that follows. You won't try that again!  9  No, it is useless to try to capture it. The hunter who attempts it will be knocked down.  10  And since no one dares to disturb it, who then can stand up to Me?  11  Who has given Me anything that I need to pay back? Everything under heaven is Mine.  12  "I want to emphasize Leviathan's limbs and its enormous strength and graceful form.  13  Who can strip off its hide, and who can penetrate its double layer of armor?  14  Who could pry open its jaws? For its teeth are terrible!  15  Its scales are like rows of shields tightly sealed together.  16  They are so close together that no air can get between them.  17  Each scale sticks tight to the next. They interlock and cannot be penetrated.  18  "When it sneezes, it flashes light! Its eyes are like the red of dawn.  19  Lightning leaps from its mouth; flames of fire flash out.  20  Smoke streams from its nostrils like steam from a pot heated over burning rushes.  21  Its breath would kindle coals, for flames shoot from its mouth.  22  "The tremendous strength in Leviathan's neck strikes terror wherever it goes.  23  Its flesh is hard and firm and cannot be penetrated.  24  Its heart is hard as rock, hard as a millstone.  25  When it rises, the mighty are afraid, gripped by terror.  26  No sword can stop it, no spear, dart, or javelin.  27  Iron is nothing but straw to that creature, and bronze is like rotten wood.  28  Arrows cannot make it flee. Stones shot from a sling are like bits of grass.  29  Clubs are like a blade of grass, and it laughs at the swish of javelins.  30  Its belly is covered with scales as sharp as glass. It plows up the ground as it drags through the mud.  31  "Leviathan makes the water boil with its commotion. It stirs the depths like a pot of ointment.  32  The water glistens in its wake, making the sea look white.  33  Nothing on earth is its equal, no other creature so fearless.  34  Of all the creatures, it is the proudest. It is the king of beasts."
Some people believe this is a crocodile, from the description here and in the KJV, I personally think this describes a dragon. I have never heard of a fire breathing crocodile. What do you think? What is the purpose of this question and the next? It is to get you to realize the earth is 6,000 some years old. Not Billions and Billions of years old like what we have been taught. If you believe the Bible you have to believe these creatures were on this earth during Job’s life time for God to describe them.

The Ten Commandments
02-16-2011 Vol. 3 Part 12
Psalm 31:6-10 NKJV I have hated those who regard useless idols; But I trust in the LORD. I will be glad and rejoice in Your mercy, For You have considered my trouble; You have known my soul in adversities, And have not shut me up into the hand of the enemy; You have set my feet in a wide place. Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am in trouble; My eye wastes away with grief, Yes, my soul and my body! For my life is spent with grief, And my years with sighing; My strength fails because of my iniquity, And my bones waste away. Jesus I pray for the people in our community that they have a change of heart and start Loving Their Neighbors As Themselves.  We raise you up and praise your most Holy and Precious name, Jesus.  Amen.
Exodus 20:16 NKJV "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Thou shalt not lie! Thou shalt not steal! Love thy neighbor as thy self!  These commandments and others, depending on the circumstances, go hand in hand. When you bear false witness you are lying. When you bear false witness you are stealing part of someone’s character by making false statements. Bearing false witness, is not loving your neighbor. So why do we do it? Is it out of hate, if this is the case then you have just broken another commandment, murder. Remember what the lesson said about, “thou shalt not kill”. When you hate someone you commit murder in your heart. Do you bear false witness to put yourself above others? If this is the case, then you have just broken the second greatest commandment, “love thy neighbor as thy self”. Pride of life is a sin all in itself. I’ve heard people say, “I’m going to climb the corporate ladder and I don’t care who I step on to get there”. A statement like that really lets you know what lies in that persons heart and it isn’t love thy neighbor, it only focuses on the last part of the second greatest commandment, “love thy self”. When a person makes a statement like that you can bet they only give God lip service.
Thou shalt not bear false witness, this forbids speaking falsely in any matter, such as; lying, equivocating, and any way devising and designing to deceive our neighbor. When we speak unjustly against our neighbor, we are tearing down his character and reputation. Bearing false witness includes things in common conversations like; slandering, backbiting, telling stories about someone, gossip, aggravating a mistake someone has made by constantly bringing the incident up, and in any way endeavoring to raise our own reputation upon the ruin of our neighbor's.
Most people view this commandment as when someone goes to court and is sworn in as a witness that they will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. It does pertain to situations like this, but it goes much deeper in everyday life. We should be honest in our private dealings as well as in our public statements. In either situation, we "testify falsely" by leaving something out of a story, telling a half-truth, twisting the facts, or inventing a falsehood. God warns us against deception. Even though deception is a way of life for many people, God's people must not give in to it!
Let’s go back to the Old Testament and see what it says about this commandment. Exodus 23:6-7 NLT  "In a lawsuit, you must not deny justice to the poor.  7  "Be sure never to charge anyone falsely with evil. Never sentence an innocent or blameless person to death, for I never declare a guilty person to be innocent. Leviticus 19:16 NLT  "Do not spread slanderous gossip among your people. "Do not stand idly by when your neighbor's life is threatened. I am the LORD. Deu 19:15-20 NLT  "You must not convict anyone of a crime on the testimony of only one witness. The facts of the case must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.  16  "If a malicious witness comes forward and accuses someone of a crime,  17  then both the accuser and accused must appear before the LORD by coming to the priests and judges in office at that time.  18  The judges must investigate the case thoroughly. If the accuser has brought false charges against his fellow Israelite,  19  you must impose on the accuser the sentence he intended for the other person. In this way, you will purge such evil from among you.  20  Then the rest of the people will hear about it and be afraid to do such an evil thing.
Here is a very strong statement that should make all sit up and take notice. Psalm 101:5-7 NLT  I will not tolerate people who slander their neighbors. I will not endure conceit and pride.  6  I will search for faithful people to be my companions. Only those who are above reproach will be allowed to serve me.  7  I will not allow deceivers to serve in my house, and liars will not stay in my presence.
What God is saying here is that he will not allow people with this nature to enter into Heaven. Stop and think about this and what I have been saying over the past several months that only Born Again believers will gain entry into Heaven. How can this be you ask, it is because when you become a Born Again believer the Holy Spirit comes and lives in your heart and your body becomes a temple for Christ. When this happens you get great conviction from the Holy Spirit living within you, when you sin or even think about sinning. Your love for Jesus is so great, you then seek forgiveness immediately from Jesus.
Can you think of any instances in the New Testament where this commandment of “False Witness” plays a part in Jesus death? Matthew 26:59-60 NASB Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death.  60  They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on two came forward, Acts 6:13 NKJV  They also set up false witnesses who said, "This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law; This is just a couple verses there are many more.
What about the other Apostles that were killed for speaking the truth? They were all victims of false testimony. What about the early disciples that were killed for speaking the truth? They drummed up false accusations against Stephen. Act 6:9-11 NASB  But some men from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including both Cyrenians and Alexandrians, and some from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and argued with Stephen.  10  But they were unable to cope with the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.  11  Then they secretly induced men to say, "We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God."  What about the early leaders of the church (Some call them Popes.) that were martyred for speaking the truth? All the leaders of the church were martyred up to approximately 138 AD (that is more than 100 years after Jesus death), and after that for another 50 or so years, history gives a strong indication that they were martyred. Why was Jesus killed along with his Apostles, disciples, and early leaders? It was because the society back then couldn’t comprehend and believe in what Jesus and his followers were teaching. That still holds true today that people won’t believe what is written in the Bible and live according to the Bible. They would rather believe in manmade laws and a religion and not the word of Jesus. Remember Nicodemus coming to Jesus and asking Jesus to explain what he was teaching? (John 3:1-17) So the people back then eradicated these true believers and put someone that taught their beliefs into office (leadership position). So I ask you this, is there a true church today? Do you believe in Jesus Christ and live by his doctrine, the Bible, or the manmade laws of the religion you practice? Are you living by religious laws that change on a whim, or by God’s Holy and True Word that hasn’t changed since the beginning of time? I urge you to examine your life style and base it on God’s Word, the Bible. Don’t think you know what the Bible says if you have never read it, pick it up and start studying it.
Now let’s talk about current times and what is going on in our community. Pick the paper up and there are all kinds of false testimony’s going on with the churches in town. Talk to people and they start making statements about pastors and priests that aren’t nice. I ask them where they get their information and they say the newspaper or so and so said this. I ask if they have talked to the pastor or priest and the response is no. I’m involved in helping to organize a month long Revival and have been verbally attacked. This Revival is a real controversial subject in the community, and people have insinuated that the people involved with the upcoming Revival are in it for their glory and the money. I asked them where they got their information and I don’t get a reply. I asked them if they talked with the pastor in charge and the reply was no. I then suggested they come to a committee meeting and ask the committee questions, but no one comes.
Conduct like this is malicious slanderous gossip. This kind of conduct is wrong and goes totally against what the Bible teaches. James 4:11 NLT  Don't speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God's law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you. What is my feeling toward these people that do this? I still love them as a fellow human being, I hate the sin they committed, and I pray that Jesus will convict them of their sin, so they can amend their ways. Our tongue gives us away every time as far as what is truly in our heart. What’s in the heart defiles us, not what we eat. Matthew 12:34 NASB  "You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. Ephesians 4:31 NASB  Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
Talking about people without knowing the truth is plain and simple gossip and can degrade a person. I think, not talking about other people is one of the hardest things to do. If we always talked about other people in a good way that would be great, but for some reason it always seem to be in a negative way. That is the way the news is, it is practically always negative news. Have you ever thought about what our world would be like if everything that came out of our mouths was praise toward our fellow brothers and sisters? I think it would be pretty awesome. We wouldn’t have to worry about the following verses if nothing but love came out of our mouth. 2Timothy 3:2-4 NASB  For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,  3  unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good,  4  treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
The Ten Commandments are there to keep us in check. Don’t think of them as something bad, but think of them as Love Commandments from God, because he loves us so much he wants to see everyone in Heaven. 1Timothy 1:8-10 NASB  But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully,  9  realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers  10  and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching.

My God, How Great Thou Art!

Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords!

Last Week’s Trivia: When God talked to Moses at the burning bush, what did God instruct Moses to do to get the Israelite’s to believe that what he was telling them was from God?
Answer: Exodus 4:1-9 NASB  Then Moses said, "What if they will not believe me or listen to what I say? For they may say, 'The LORD has not appeared to you.'"  2  The LORD said to him, "What is that in your hand?" And he said, "A staff."  3  Then He said, "Throw it on the ground." So he threw it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it.  4  But the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand and grasp it by its tail"--so he stretched out his hand and caught it, and it became a staff in his hand--  5  "that they may believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you."  6  The LORD furthermore said to him, "Now put your hand into your bosom." So he put his hand into his bosom, and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous like snow.  7  Then He said, "Put your hand into your bosom again." So he put his hand into his bosom again, and when he took it out of his bosom, behold, it was restored like the rest of his flesh.  8  "If they will not believe you or heed the witness of the first sign, they may believe the witness of the last sign.  9  "But if they will not believe even these two signs or heed what you say, then you shall take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground; and the water which you take from the Nile will become blood on the dry ground."

The Ten Commandments
02-09-2011 Vol. 3 Part 11
Psalm 31:1-5 NKJV To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. In You, O LORD, I put my trust; Let me never be ashamed; Deliver me in Your righteousness. Bow down Your ear to me, Deliver me speedily; Be my rock of refuge, A fortress of defense to save me. For You are my rock and my fortress; Therefore, for Your name's sake, Lead me and guide me. Pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, For You are my strength. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD God of truth. Jesus I ask you to bestow your blessing on the individuals and their families that are on the Prayer List. You know what each person and family needs and ask that your will be done, because you know what is needed. We raise you up and praise your most Holy and Precious name, Jesus.  Amen.
Exodus 20:15 NLT  “You must not steal.”
Here’s a few reasons I think people steal, what do you think?
They want instant happiness?
They want security?
They want to attract friends?
They have forgotten about God's promise of care?

Are you a Thief? Do you steal? Most people think of this, as stealing money, or something like a car, or something of great value. What about small things like time, paper copies, paper clips, downloaded music/pictures from the internet, being a class clown and stealing time from a teacher or pastor trying to teach something? What about in a Bible study class where someone rambles on and on about something? Are they stealing from God and what he wants to teach us? There are numerous ways that we steal.
Why did God give us this Commandment, “You must not steal?” It was given by God to Israel to protect the rights and property of all people. The right to own personal property and what an individual earns or inherits belongs to him and no one has the right to take it from him without just cause. Honesty really is the only policy as far as God is concerned.
This Commandment along with six other Commandments are linked with the second greatest Commandment given by Jesus? Matthew 22:39 NASB  "The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' So how does this demonstrate love and how are we to act toward our neighbors? Here’s how it fits in; Jesus doesn’t want us stealing because He is the One who will supply all our needs. He doesn’t want us to scheme, manipulate, and deceive to obtain things. What would we become if we did? He doesn’t want us to feel responsible for securing our own future. The truth is, every time we steal something, large or small, we are saying, "I will be my own provider. I don’t need anyone’s help, but when we place our trust fully in Him, we never lose. Through this commandment the Lord said, "Let Me provide for you. I want you to trust Me, rest in Me, and be content with Me." Peter states this; 2 Peter 1:4 NASB For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. Jesus has pledged Himself to satisfy and supply our every need.
In Leviticus this commandment is further explained: Leviticus 19:11-13 NLT "Do not steal. "Do not deceive or cheat one another.  12 "Do not bring shame on the name of your God by using it to swear falsely. I am the LORD.  13 "Do not defraud or rob your neighbor. "Do not make your hired workers wait until the next day to receive their pay.  God still expects His people not only to be honest with Him, but honest and truthful with one another as well. The fact is you cannot be right with God if you are not right with other people. The person who is not honest with others will not be honest with himself, or with God!
In Old Testament times, under the law of Moses, the penalty attached to all types of stealing was restitution or "giving back to the owner that which was stolen or unlawfully taken away." But actually the thief had to restore more than what was taken away. For example, if he stole one ox or sheep, he had to restore two. If the stolen animals died in his possession, he had to restore four or five times more than he stole.  Exodus 22:1 NLT  "If someone steals an ox or sheep and then kills or sells it, the thief must pay back five oxen for each ox stolen, and four sheep for each sheep stolen. Exodus 22:4 NLT  If someone steals an ox or a donkey or a sheep and it is found in the thief's possession, then the thief must pay double the value of the stolen animal. Stealing was not considered a crime worthy of the death penalty. Nevertheless, if a man was caught in the act of stealing and was killed at night, there would be no penalty for killing the thief (Exodus 22:2 NLT  "If a thief is caught in the act of breaking into a house and is struck and killed in the process, the person who killed the thief is not guilty of murder.)  If a thief was killed in daylight hours it was considered murder. Why the difference you ask, probably because the thief could be identified in the daylight and restitution could be made. Also, in some cases where the robber was unable to restore or repay the legal amount of goods, he himself could be sold as a slave until the debt was repaid (Exodus 22:3 NLT  But if it happens in daylight, the one who killed the thief is guilty of murder. "A thief who is caught must pay in full for everything he stole. If he cannot pay, he must be sold as a slave to pay for his theft.) Maybe the Old Testament laws sound strange and old fashioned but history reveals they were very effective. Perhaps, we today would do well to consider some of the measures given by God to Israel in light of the fantastic yearly increase in crimes of all kinds, most of them involving some type of robbery or theft. The laws God gave to Israel were both just and workable.
Does Jesus forgive thieves? You bet he does. The thief who repented, as he was dying on the cross next to Jesus, isn’t the only thief who has ever been forgiven or saved. We can be grateful that the blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son, cleanses us from all sin. This includes the sin of stealing. Yet the standard for the Born Again believer is simply stated in Ephesians 4:28 NASB  He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need. Once Christ comes into the heart "old things are passed away; behold all things are become new" (II Corinthians 5:17). God's children are to be forever finished with the sins and crimes of their unbelieving past. Paul in another place includes "thieves" in his list of persons who will not inherit the kingdom of God. 1Corinthians 6:9-11 NASB  Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,  10  nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.  11  Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
Are you stealing if you cheat on a test, aren't you stealing someone else's answers? How about borrowing a comb, a book, a sweater, or tool, and conveniently forgetting to return it? What about children removing food from the cupboard or picking up pocket change from the dresser without their parent’s permission? Or using Mom's perfume or Dad’s tools without asking? What about while you are grocery shopping and you eat some grapes or strawberries to see how they taste and then you don’t buy them? How much time do you steal from your employer by standing around talking, walking around looking like you are busy, going and sitting in the bathroom numerous times, talking or texting on your cell phone, etc. What about making photo copies at work without permission? These are all examples of stealing.
The most common and unrecognized form of thievery is that of ROBBING GOD. That's right! You can and possibly do steal from God. In the book of Malachi, God accused the Israelites of "robbing" Him because they withheld their tithes and offerings. Malachi 3:8-9 NASB  "Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, 'How have we robbed You?' In tithes and offerings.  9  "You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the whole nation of you! Are you giving a proper portion of your allowance or money you earn to the Lord? What about your time? Are you faithful, supportive, and volunteer your time to the functions of your church whether it is something within the church or for the good of the community? If not, you are stealing something from God that would give him Glory. Do you set aside some time each day for Bible study and prayer?
There is still another way in which we can rob God. If we take our lives and use them purely for selfish purposes, purposes that displease the Lord, then we are stealing from God, which is rightfully His! We have been redeemed so that we should not live for ourselves but for the One who died for us and rose again (2 Corinthians 5:15 NASB  and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.)
Satan, the deceiver convinces us that taking something now will give us an immediate lift and will fill the voids in our lives, which of course, can only be filled by the Lord Himself. Proverbs 15:16 NLT  Better to have little, with fear for the LORD, than to have great treasure and inner turmoil. People sometimes think, If I can just grab this, it will give me the security I’m longing for. They think riches and "things" will make them happy. But money and possessions are no security at all! All the money that you possess by deception will fly away. God also knows that the very things we pursue to secure the future will fall short. A lingering illness can erase a life's savings. A house full of possessions can be wiped out by a flood or swept away by an IRS audit. The only thing secure in this life is God. Psalm 16:8-9 NLT  I know the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for He is right beside me.  9  No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety.
No Christian should steal anything, anytime, anywhere from anyone for any reason. God expects His children to be honest, and He blesses those who are. And as you follow the Lord's way you will be able to say with Paul: (1 Corinthians 11:1 NASB  Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.).
The only way you can keep this commandment is to make a decision and ask Jesus to come into your life and take control of your lifestyle. This is the only way to be satisfied. The book of Hebrews says this very pointedly: Hebrews 13:5-6 NLT  Don't love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, "I will never fail you. I will never abandon you."  6  So we can say with confidence, "The LORD is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?"  The Lord says to us, "Don't you worry about that. And don't steal or spend all of your energy trying to scheme and manipulate things to your own advantage. Because if you obey My Word, I'll provide for your every need all the days of your life."  When you know that God is your Provider, it changes everything. Your heart. The way you live. And it certainly changes the way you view your possessions. Trust in God and be satisfied.
Matthew 6:25-34 NLT  "That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn't life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don't plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren't you far more valuable to Him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? "And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don't work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, He will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? "So don't worry about these things, saying, 'What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?' These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need. "So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today.

Last Week’s Trivia: How many forced laborers were appointed to build Solomon’s temple?
Answer: 1 Kings 5:13-14 NASB  Now King Solomon levied forced laborers from all Israel; and the forced laborers numbered 30,000 men.  14  He sent them to Lebanon, 10,000 a month in relays; they were in Lebanon a month and two months at home. And Adoniram was over the forced laborers.
This week’s Trivia: When God talked to Moses at the burning bush, what did God instruct Moses to do to get the Israelite’s to believe that what he was telling them was from God?
