Proverbs 14:25-35
25  A true witness delivers souls, But a deceitful witness speaks lies.
26  In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, And His children will have a place of refuge.
27  The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, To turn one away from the snares of death.
28  In a multitude of people is a king's honor, But in the lack of people is the downfall of a prince.
29  He who is slow to wrath has great understanding, But he who is impulsive exalts folly.
30  A sound heart is life to the body, But envy is rottenness to the bones.
31  He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, But he who honors Him has mercy on the needy.
32  The wicked is banished in his wickedness, But the righteous has a refuge in his death.
33  Wisdom rests in the heart of him who has understanding, But what is in the heart of fools is made known.
34  Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.
35  The king's favor is toward a wise servant, But his wrath is against him who causes shame.
Father God, we are born with the sin nature, you and only you are the cure. Pierce the hearts of unbelievers with your Words to convict and bring them home to you. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Gospel of John 5:36-47 NKJV
We left off last week with Jesus bringing John the Baptist into the conversation with the Jewish leaders, and John as a witness to who Jesus is. Jesus doesn’t need John as a witness, because of all the miracles Jesus was performing, but the leaders rejected the works of Jesus. This chapter ends with Jesus telling the leaders they search scripture for the truth but when they find it they reject it; He tells them they have a wick heart toward God and they really don’t know God. They can quote scripture but don’t live it, in other words they are lost. Their outward appearance, speech, and actions fool those around them, but what is in their heart is enmity toward God. This is oh so true today also! Where do you stand with God?
36  But I have a greater witness than John's; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me.
But I have a greater witness than John's; John was a great witness, but here Jesus is stating that what He does is a much greater testimony as to who He is.
For the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do; The works Jesus is speaking of here is the miracles He was performing, healing the sick and raising the dead. These miracles were given by God for Jesus to do; they were entrusted into His hands. These things Jesus did because He did His Fathers will and not mans will.
These works or miracles bore witness of him; that is, they showed that he was sent from God, because none but God could perform them, and because God would not give such power to any whose life and doctrines he did not approve.
The word “finish” has special meaning here and it is the reason that Jesus protected His life at times and vanished from the crowds. He had many tasks to complete for His Father and when He expired on the Cross, He at that point exclaimed it is finished. John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
Bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me; The miracles which Jesus performed were such as no human being could work, and no angel. He that could raise the dead must have all power, and he who commissioned Jesus, therefore, must be God.
37  And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form.
And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me; This phrase Jesus is telling the leaders that God had bore witness as to who Jesus was by the miracles which Jesus had performed; of the conversation that was taking place; at the baptism of Jesus, where he said, “This is my beloved Son,” Matthew 3:17; and in the prophecies of the Old Testament.
You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form; In essence, Jesus is saying that these Jews to whom He was speaking believed that God existed, even though they had never heard His Voice or seen His Shape; therefore, why should they not believe the One sent by the Father, which the Miracles and Deliverances performed by Jesus, proved who He was?
Jesus is affirming that God had given sufficient evidence of his divine mission, but they had disregarded it. The words “heard his voice” is to be understood in the sense of “obey” or listen to, but these leaders had a deaf ear, rejected Jesus, and believed in mans doctrine. So what god did they believe in?
38  But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe.
Jesus really starts to rebuke these leaders now. The words He uses are not kind words in fact He is accusing and attacking these leaders. Do you think at this point Jesus might be getting a little frustrated and angry with these leaders?
But you do not have His word abiding in you; This phrase is referencing Gods Law or Word and the fact that these leaders did not have it in their heart; it was just head knowledge of God and the Word. In other words they did not regard or obey it. This was the “third” thing that he charged them with. 1.) They had not obeyed the command of God. 2.)           They had not regarded his manifestations, either in the times of the old dispensation, or now through the Messiah. 3.) They did not yield to what he had said in the revelation of the Old Testament. How many people of today are the same as these leaders? They know Jesus with their mind and not their heart, therefore live in this world conforming to the laws of the world.
Because whom He sent, Him you do not believe; God had foretold that the Messiah would come. He had now given evidence that Jesus was he; but now they rejected him, and this was proof that they did not regard the Word of God. The rejection of Christ by the religious leaders of Israel demonstrated not only ignorance of God, but hostility to Him.
39  You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.
You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; The word “search” translated here means to “search diligently” or “search anxiously.” These leaders were students of the Old Testament Scriptures. They searched the scriptures for a nugget, like a miner diligently searches for a nugget of precious metal. Based on Jesus comment here it appears that these leaders believed that by diligently studying Scripture they could obtain eternal life. They studied the OT Scripture for laws and not for the examples of living by faith.
The Bereans also searched the Scriptures, but to identify what was true or false.  Acts 17:11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. Timothy is said from a child to have “known the holy scriptures, which are able to make us wise unto salvation,” 2 Timothy 3:15  and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. Early life is the good time to search the Bible, for they who seek the Lord early shall find him. What a true statement this is that in the early forming years of youth a person is more willing to come to Jesus than in the years of the aged.
You see you can be like these leaders Jesus is speaking to, or be like Timothy and the Bereans. You can read the Bible like a story book or read it in search of the truth that will set you free. You need to read it with you heart and not your mind.
And these are they which testify of Me; They, meaning the forefathers of the OT bore witness to the Messiah. They predicted his coming, and the manner of his life and death, Isaiah 53:1-12; Daniel 9:26-27, etc. The entire story of the Bible is “Christ and Him Crucified”.
40  But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.
It has been said that this is the saddest statement ever made. Not only would Israel not come, but also most of the world for all time.
Jesus is the life source for eternal life and the only life source. This verse proclaims He is the only source, eternal life cannot be obtained through Mohammed, Confucius, Buddha, Joseph Smith, or anyone or anything else for that matter! He is the giver of eternal life if a person will come to Him in repentance. A person has to seek out Jesus with their heart to be saved; they have to have the will to be saved. John 3:16; Revelation 20:11–15
41  "I do not receive honor from men.
Jesus did not look for any honor, praise, atta boys from people. He was here on earth to do His Fathers will and to carry out God’s plan of salvation; to be the ultimate sacrifice; to start the New Testament. This should be our criteria as well to please God and not man if we call ourselves Christians. It shouldn’t matter what people think about us, but it does. Here in the United States many people go to great measures to make sure they, their houses, yards, vehicles, etc. are spotless to make a good impression with their neighbors, but curse, blaspheme God, lie, steal, gossip, etc. and never think anything about pleasing God.
42  But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you.
The reason why people do not love God is because they have no regard for his character, wishes, or law. They are more concerned in keeping mans laws and receiving praise from man. If one is truly Saved, one will truly have the Love of God in their heart.
43  I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.
I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; This phrase proclaims the real reason they did not receive Jesus, it is because they did not know the Father, despite their claims. They claimed to know the Father, but they only knew Him with a head knowledge and not a heart knowledge.
If another comes in his own name, him you will receive; This actually speaks of the coming Antichrist, as well as all other False Messiahs. Mankind is more apt to accept other humans and what they say and do over spiritual matters.
44  How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God?
How can you believe, who receive honor from one another; Jesus makes a bold claim here that is directed at the Jewish leaders. He tells them they are students of praise, and live for pride, ambition, and vain glory. This desire, Jesus says, was the great reason why they would not believe in Him. They were unwilling to renounce their worldly honors, and become the followers of one so humble and modest as He was. The great reason why multitudes do not believe is their attachment to human honors, or their pride, and vanity, and ambition.  These are so strong, that while they continue they cannot and will not believe.
And do not seek the honor that comes from the only God; Meaning the praise, the glory, the approval of God. The honor which comes from men is their praise, flattery, commendation; the honor that comes from God is His approval for doing His will. Only God can award the honors of heaven, the reward of having done our duty here.
45  Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust.
Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; Actually means that they are already accused.
There is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust; This phrase points to the Scriptures. These Religious Leaders claimed to obey the Law of Moses, and held up this claim as an example. But Jesus tells them, they are not obeying the Law of Moses, and they are only using Moses as a front for their hypocrisy. Jesus is actually saying, what Moses said will condemn them in the Judgment.
46  For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me.
Moses wrote of the Messiah, clearly foretold his coming, and commanded them to hear him. They did not do it and disregarding his commands. Had they obeyed Moses commands they would have recognized Jesus as the Messiah.
47  But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"
Jesus bluntly tells these leaders to their faces that despite their claims, they were, in fact, unbelievers. All of their religious laws and actions were but a masquerade party. At heart they did not believe the Bible any more than the heathen.
What may we learn; 1.) That many men who profess to believe the Bible have really no regard for it when it crosses their own views and inclinations. 2.) It is our duty to study the Bible, that we may be established in the belief that Jesus is the Messiah. 3.) The prophecies of the Old Testament are conclusive proofs of the truth of Christianity. 4.) He that rejects one part of the Bible, will, for the same reason, reject all. 5.) The Saviour acknowledged the truth of the writings of Moses, built His doctrine upon them, appealed to them to prove that He was the Messiah, and commanded men to search them. We have the testimony of Jesus, therefore, that the Old Testament is a revelation from God. He that rejects His testimony on this subject must reject his authority altogether; and it is vain for any man to profess to believe in the New Testament, or in the Lord Jesus, without also acknowledging the authority of the Old Testament and of Moses.
We have in this chapter an instance of the profound and masterly manner in which Jesus could meet and silence his enemies. There is not anywhere a more conclusive argument, or a more triumphant meeting of the charges which they had brought against him. No one can read this without being struck with his profound wisdom; and it is scarcely possible to conceive that there could be a more distinct declaration and proof that he was equal with God. Sinners Prayer; Pray this, and if you believe it with your heart, Jesus will save you!
“Lord Jesus I know I am a sinner.  I confess my sins to you; I am sorry for my sins; I repent (Meaning, desiring to turn from a sinful lifestyle.) of all my sins, and I am asking for your forgiveness.  I believe that only you can forgive sin.  I commit my life to you and ask you to come into my heart, direct, and take charge of my life.  I believe that you died to set me free from my sinful lifestyle and you rose from the dead to give me eternal life, and right now you are seated at the Right Hand of God Almighty. I believe you are the Son of God; the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life, and my Savior.”  I believe this and have faith you will make a new person out of me, by sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in my heart and lead me in a new life. Proverbs 14:13-24
13  Even in laughter the heart may sorrow, And the end of mirth may be grief.
14  The backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways, But a good man will be satisfied from above.
15  The simple believes every word, But the prudent considers well his steps.
16  A wise man fears and departs from evil, But a fool rages and is self-confident.
17  A quick-tempered man acts foolishly, And a man of wicked intentions is hated.
18  The simple inherit folly, But the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
19  The evil will bow before the good, And the wicked at the gates of the righteous.
20  The poor man is hated even by his own neighbor, But the rich has many friends.
21  He who despises his neighbor sins; But he who has mercy on the poor, happy is he.
22  Do they not go astray who devise evil? But mercy and truth belong to those who devise good.
23  In all labor there is profit, But idle chatter leads only to poverty.
24  The crown of the wise is their riches, But the foolishness of fools is folly.
Father God, this chapter is all about your plan of Salvation. Help the unsaved to hear your words, to repent, and get saved. Let them be like the Apostles that believed and not like the Pharisees of not believing.  In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Gospel of John 5:24-35 NKJV
This rebuking that Jesus is laying on the Pharisees continues to the end of this Chapter. Jesus really lays it on the leaders, but to no avail. They are so stuck in their heritage, customs, and religion they don’t want anything to do with Jesus. What is sad about this is that even today around the world we have people stuck in a religion and close their mind to the truth. They would rather follow man.
Another thing to note is what Jesus is telling the leaders and us also is that if a person hears His words and believes, they will go to Heaven not Hell. These are strong words and offensive to the lost. So where is the love that so many say Jesus is all about and that He doesn’t offend anyone? Jesus says these things out of love for the lost, so that they may have eternal life. Let’s see what John has in store for us this week in these verses.
24  "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word; The word “hear” is often used in the sense of accepting the Gospel and then obeying the Word of God, John 8:47; Acts 3:23. Many people outwardly hear the gospel who neither understand nor obey it. What good does just hearing the Gospel do if one does not obey what Jesus tells us? Matthew 11:15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
And believes in Him who sent Me; If one doesn’t believe in Jesus, they cannot believe in God; to have the Son is to have the Father. There can be no faith in Him who “sent” his Son, without faith also in Him who is “sent.”
Has everlasting life; The state of man by nature is represented as death in sin, Ephesians 2:1. Being Born Again is the opposite of this, or is “life.” Therefore, when a man is Born Again, it is said that he “has” everlasting life; not merely shall have but is already in possession of that life or happiness which shall be everlasting. When he accepts Jesus as his Saviour, he has already entered in on his inheritance, that inheritance which is everlasting.
And shall not come into judgment; We are born with the sin nature therefore we are condemned at birth. Although an infant/child is innocent and will go to Heaven if they perish during this time of innocence because of not being able to comprehend the message of the Gospel, but when that age of accountability comes and a person truly realize right from wrong and has the choice to choose, then that condemnation take effect, but a Born Again Christian will not come under judgment because they are saved.
But has passed from death into life; A person that is Born Again passes from spiritual death to spiritual life. The old person dies and a new person is born. Romans 6:6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
25  Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.
Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; This verse has two messages, the first being physical referring to, “the hour is coming”. This refers to those dead in the grave and at some point in time will hear the voice of Jesus and will come forth and meet Jesus in the sky. The second is spiritual referring to “and now is” meaning when a person hears the Gospel and accepts Jesus as their Saviour (Being Born Again).
And those who hear will live; What this is saying is that those who hear, understand, and believe what the Message of the Cross is all about will have eternal life.
26  For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,
For as the Father has life in Himself; This refers to God as the Eternal Fountain of Life, the one and only ultimate source. It speaks of God that always has been, and always shall be.
So He has granted the Son to have life in Himself; Here again Jesus claims deity. He is saying that He is not merely a participator in this “Life,” but in fact, is the Source of Life, and in Truth, the Ultimate Source, exactly as the Father.
27  and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.
And has given Him authority to execute judgment also; This phrase refers to the following: 1.) As the Son of God He saves and imparts Spiritual Life. 2.) As Son of Man He exercises and executes judgment. This judgment has to do with all judgment, whether it be the coming “Judgment Seat of Christ,” which pertains to Believers (Romans 14:10), or the “Great White Throne Judgment” (Revelation 20:11–15).
Because He is the Son of Man; This phrase refers to Jesus paying the price on Calvary’s Cross for our sins when in reality, because of our sinfulness we should be nailed to that Cross. Since He died for our sins then He has the right to judge us. Living as a human being He knows us and our nature, therefore come judgment day no one will be able to say where is the compassion, not fair, or anything because Jesus lived as a human and lived according to the Fathers will. He has earned the right to be the “Judge”.
28  Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice
The leaders Jesus is speaking with must have had some looks on their faces from awe to perplexity because of what He was saying. With this verse Jesus is telling them at some point in time all that have physically died will rise up from their earthly graves or where ever their remains are to face a judgment.
Some believe when they die it is the end and they will rest in the grave forever, but verses 28 and 29 tell us different. Some day they will hear Jesus calling them from the grave and they will come forth. It will be the same command that Jesus said to Lazarus, “come forth’. John 11:43 Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth!"
29  and come forth— those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.
Those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; This resurrection is what is referred to as the Rapture. Personally I believe this will happen sometime at the beginning of the seven year Tribulation which appears to be just around the corner based on Bible Prophesy and current events. Those that are believers and have placed their faith in Jesus death, burial, and resurrection will be taken off this earth and not go through the seven year Tribulation. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.  17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
And those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation; The word “damnation” means the sentence passed on one by a judge, judgment, or condemnation. The word, as we use it, applies only to the judgment pronounced by God on the wicked. This is not always its meaning in the Bible, but here it is. Those who have done evil (unbelievers) will be raised up “to be condemned or damned.” This will be the purpose in raising them up and the result will be them being cast into the Lake of Fire for eternity. This Last Resurrection will take place approximately a thousand years after the Resurrection of Life (Daniel 12:2; Revelation Chapter 20).
30  I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.
I can of Myself do nothing; The nature of the relationship of the Father and the Son is one of unity and oneness. Jesus does nothing independently of God. Whatever he does, he does according to the will of God.
As I hear, I judge; “As I hear” expresses the condition of one who is commissioned or instructed; John 8:26, “I speak to the world those things which I have “heard” of him;” John 8:28, “As the Father hath taught me, I speak those things.” Jesus here represents himself as commissioned, taught, or sent of God. When he says, “as I ‘hear,’” he refers to those things which the Father had “showed” him John_5:20 in other words to communicate the will of God; to show to man what God wished man to know; to judge according to the Fathers will.
And My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me; Jesus, as judge will sentence according to God’s will, therefore will be a righteous judgment. It will be a perfect judgment because it will come from the Throne of God.
31  "If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true.
Jesus claimed to be equal with God (John_5:18), to give eternal life (John_5:24), to be the source of life (John_5:26), and to judge sin (John_5:27). These statements make it clear that Jesus was claiming to be divine, an almost unbelievable claim, but one that was supported by another witness, John the Baptist as we see in the next verse.
Jesus is saying in this verse; My will is the Fathers will, which I do, but if I speak and do my will, which would be human will, it would be false and not to follow. Does this sound like a warning for us not to follow man fabricated doctrine?
32  There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true.
Jesus is referring to John the Baptist here not the Father. Some believe it is in reference to the Father, but the Father is who Jesus has been referring to. With the word “another” denotes someone else.
John was the forerunner to Christ and Jesus knew what he said was true, but the Pharisees and Religious Leaders would not accept the witness of John.
33  You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.
Here Jesus is referring to when the Jewish leaders sent people to John the Baptist to ask who he was. John answered their questions, he bore witness and stated the Messiah was standing among them, but they didn’t believe. John 1:19-27
34  Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved.
This sound a little contradictory, first Jesus says there is another that bore Him witness in verse 32, but here He stated He doesn’t receive testimony of man. What He is actually saying here is that He does not require proof of Him being the Messiah on the testimony of men, all they need to do is listen, see the miracles, and believe. He uses Johns testimony to help convince these leaders that what He is saying is true; to believe and be saved. In other words Jesus is telling these leaders they are lost and condemned.
35  He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.
For a while the Leaders believed that John the Baptist was a prophet and they were rejoicing thinking maybe this is the Messiah, but eventually realized he was just a messenger. They were willing to listen to John but not to Jesus.
Looks like a good spot to stop for this week. We will continue next week with Jesus giving more proof of who He is.

Gospel of John 5:13-23 NKJV
This week’s lesson starts with Jesus finding the man that He healed by the pool and ends with Him conversing with the leaders of the Jewish people. What Jesus tells these leaders must have totally bewildered them? It is too bad they didn’t believe what Jesus said, but it only angered them.
13  But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place.
This man that Jesus healed was so exuberant over his healing he didn’t even inquire who it was that healed him. He was like a young horse contained in a stall for several days and when let out into the pasture runs and kicks up its heels. This man was probably dancing and running around after 38 years of his infirmary and never gave it a thought as to who cured him.
This man may have gone back to see who healed him after the excitement subsided, but Jesus was gone. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Jesus just sort of vanished while the crowd was watching this man that was healed knowing what He had done would not set well with the Jewish people.
14  Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you."
Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him; This phrase tells us that Jesus had a message for this man. It doesn’t say Jesus ran into the man, but that He found him. This message was a very important message for the man and also for us today.
See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you; Jesus tells this man that he was cured, to get his attention for what He was about to say. This cure is speaking of the physical healing and also of a spiritual healing because Jesus had forgiven this man’s sin that caused the condition the man was in for 38 years. This verse is a confirmation that our physical state or diseases are a result of sin and disobedience to God. Maybe not all conditions are which we have no way of telling, but some are. This tells us that disobedience to God opens the door for worse things.
Jesus tells him to sin no more in other words repent of your lifestyle. This is a wakeup call for this man and that if he goes back to the sin that cause this condition it will be much worse for him physically and spiritually. What Jesus could be saying is that if you go back to sinning, a disease will destroy you with physical death and spiritual death in Hell.
Food for thought in current times; Could cancer that some people get be caused by sin, I’m not saying all cancer victims, but some? If it is and the cancer goes into remission, but returns at a later date, could it be because the person ignored God’s calling to grace? I think it is possible and I’ve always said if a person is inflicted with some disease it may be a calling from God to wake up and repent and join His family. When life changing events happen in our life we need to examine our lifestyle.
15  The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
Why would this man go and tell the leaders of the Jews it was Jesus that healed him? Most likely he thought he was doing the right thing. He knew Jesus was someone special and he wanted the leaders to be in awe of Jesus, just like he was. He probably didn’t know how the Jewish leaders felt about Jesus and that they were looking for fault to condemn Jesus.
16  For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath.
From this time forward the Jews would watch closely and seek out a reason to kill Jesus. They thought they were upholding this; Exodus 31:15 Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.; but in reality they had confounded God’s command with their silly petty rules of what work was.
This is still going on today with religions and man adding and changing what God says. We have religions that say theirs is the only true religion and close their mind to the truth. Look at the middle east and the religion that is attempting to take over the world. There is great persecution of Christians now just like the great persecution of those when Jesus walked this earth. Whenever someone opposes leaders of a religion, persecution is the result. Martin Luther is a fine example of this if you know his biography. If you don’t know about him do some research and see what religious leaders he confronted and the religion, he came out of.
17  But Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I have been working."
But Jesus answered them; By this phrase we know this is a face to face conversation.
My Father has been working until now, and I have been working; Genesis states this about the seventh day; Genesis 2:2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. This verse tells us that God ended His work of creation on the seventh day and rested. The work God did on the seventh day was good and what Jesus was trying to teach was that good work is ok. Just like the example He gave about saving an animal on the Sabbath. If God stopped every kind of work on the Sabbath, nature would fall into chaos, and sin would overrun the world.
With this phrase Jesus was identifying Himself with God, his Father. There could be no doubt as to his claim to be God. Jesus does not leave us the option to believe in God while ignoring God's Son. John 5:23 that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. The problem being that the Pharisees also called God their Father, but they realized Jesus was claiming a unique relationship with Him and this relationship was what the Pharisee had a problem with because they viewed the claim as blasphemy.
18  Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.
With the previous verses there is no doubt that Jesus was claiming God as His father and equal with God. He made it clear where He came from. This angered the Pharisee greatly causing them the desire to kill Jesus.
19  Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.
Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself; The intimate relationship Jesus had with His Father lead Jesus to do nothing contrary to the Fathers will. This union between the Father and the Son was not one of “independence” or separate from the Father. It was one that Jesus was dependant on His Father for all things. This is the type of relationship we need with Jesus. Before we say or do anything we need to listen for Jesus voice for guidance. What Would Jesus Do?
But what He sees the Father do; No person can see God acting in his works, but Jesus implies here that He sees Him act. This speaks of the deity of Jesus and the fact that Jesus is one with God.
For whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner; If one does “all” that another does or can do, then there must be equality. If the Son does all that the Father does, then, like Him, he must be almighty, omniscient, omnipresent, and infinite in every perfection; or, in other words, he must be God. If he had “this” power, then he had authority, also, to do on the Sabbath day what God did.
20  For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.
For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; The love that God has for His one and only Son is so strong and binding; and is built on His Sons obedience, that God led Him through all things. We know this is fact because Jesus was human and He prayed for His death on the Cross to be taken away, but God gave Him the strength to endure the death that He was to suffer for our salvation.
And He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel; What Jesus is saying here is this man that was healed is nothing compared to what is to come, His resurrection, raising the dead, and judging the world, etc.
21  For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.
For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them; With this verse Jesus is telling the Pharisees that He has the power to give life (physical and spiritual) just like His Father had done. In at least two instances, one by the prophet Elijah, in the case of the son of the widow of Sarepta (1 Kings 17:22), and two by the prophet Elisha, in the case of the Shunamite’s son, (2 Kings 4:32-35). The Jews did not doubt that God had power to raise the dead. Jesus here expressly affirms it, and says he has the same power.
Even so the Son gives life to whom He will; Jesus is likening Himself to His Father in the fact that He also can raise the dead and give life pertaining to physical, and also spiritual life.
This phrase also tells us something else, do you know what it is? Salvation is by faith and not of works. We can’t do enough good deeds in our lifetime to earn Heaven. It is a heartfelt repentance of a sinful lifestyle and placing ones faith in Jesus death and resurrection for us, and then the mercy and forgiveness of Jesus engages with that wonderful gift of grace.
22  For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,
For the Father judges no one; Jesus in these verses is showing his “equality with God.” He affirmed John 5:17 that he had the same power over the Sabbath that his Father had; in John 5:19, that he did the same things as the Father; in John 5:21 particularly that he had the same power to raise the dead. He now adds that God has given Him the authority to “judge” men. The Father pronounces judgment on no one. This office he has committed to the Son. The power of judging the world implies ability to search the heart, and omniscience to understand the motives of all actions.
But has committed all judgment to the Son; Jesus is the Saviour of mankind; however, if men refuse Him as Saviour, they will face Him as Judge. Acts 17:31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead." This judgment will not be by Grace, because Grace was refused, but by Law in keeping the Law perfectly and in totality. The curse of the broken Law is spiritual death, but Jesus took that curse upon Himself. However, if His payment for our sins is rejected, the penalty of the curse must be performed.
23  that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
That all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father; To honor is to esteem, reverence, praise, do homage to. We honor one when we ascribe to Him in our hearts, and words, and actions the praise and obedience which are due to Him. We honor God when we obey Him and worship Him. We honor the Son when we esteem Him to be as He is; when we have right views and feelings toward Him. As He is declared to be God John 1:1, as He here says He has power and authority equal with God, so we honor Him when we regard Him as such.
He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him; Here Jesus is stating the Father wills that the Son should be honored. He that refuses to do it disobeys the Father; that they are equal, He that denies the one denies also the other; that the same feeling that leads us to honor the “Father” will also lead us to honor the “Son,” for he is “the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person,” Hebrews 1:3.
From this verse we learn: 1.) That those who do not render proper homage to Jesus Christ do not worship the true God. 2.) There is no such God as the infidel professes to believe in. There can be but one God; and if the God of the Bible be the true God, then all other gods are false gods. 3.) Those who withhold proper worship from Jesus Christ, who do not honor Him even as they honor the Father, cannot be Christians in God’s eyes. 4.) One evidence of piety is when we are willing to render proper praise and homage to Jesus Christ, to love Him, and serve and obey Him, with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength.
Next week we will continue this discussion between Jesus and the Pharisees.

visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.

In Jesus name I pray Amen.”
