Proverbs 20:21-30
21  An inheritance gained hastily at the beginning Will not be blessed at the end.
22  Do not say, "I will recompense evil"; Wait for the LORD, and He will save you.
23  Diverse weights are an abomination to the LORD, And dishonest scales are not good.
24  A man's steps are of the LORD; How then can a man understand his own way?
25  It is a snare for a man to devote rashly something as holy, And afterward to reconsider his vows.
26  A wise king sifts out the wicked, And brings the threshing wheel over them.
27  The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD, Searching all the inner depths of his heart.
28  Mercy and truth preserve the king, And by loving-kindness he upholds his throne.
29  The glory of young men is their strength, And the splendor of old men is their gray head.
30  Blows that hurt cleanse away evil, As do stripes the inner depths of the heart.
Father God, we give thanks and praise for all that you do in our lives, even for the things that we don’t realize you had a hand in. Bless us and all that we do, You are the Great I Am!  In Jesus name we pray.  Amen!
Gospel of John 9:13-25 NKJV
This week’s topic is about the formerly blind man that received his sight by Jesus and the leaders of the Sanhedrin trying to convince this man that his new sight is all a hoax. What hatred and disbelief these so called leaders had for Jesus. Why is it that some leaders are so evil and corrupt that they will only support their agenda and turn their back on other ideas that are good for people?
13  They brought him who formerly was blind to the Pharisees.
This formerly blind man that was healed by Jesus was taken to the Pharisees, and you know it wasn’t to find out who healed him or how it was done. The Pharisees already knew it was Jesus, what they wanted was the details of how Jesus did it so that they could accuse Him of working on the Sabbath and breaking one of their sacred laws, then they could condemn Jesus.
14  Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.
The Jewish Sabbath, Saturday, was the weekly holy day of rest. The Pharisees had made a long list of specific dos and don'ts regarding the Sabbath. Kneading the mud and healing the man was considered work and therefore forbidden. Jesus may have purposely made the clay in order to emphasize his teaching about the Sabbath that it is right to care for others' needs even if it involves working on a day of rest.
There were no doubt many other miracles that took place on the Sabbath that healed and helped people that the leaders were not aware of. Instead of seeing the good and wonders that Jesus perform, which could only be performed through God’s grace, these leaders were preoccupied with finding ways to do away with Jesus because He was pulling the Jewish people away from the false religion they were practicing. They were losing favor with the people in other words their pride and position among the people was being threatened and they thrived on self esteem.
It is no different today self esteem and pride is what keeps many from humbling themselves and coming to Jesus in repentance, instead they cling to the rules and regulations of a religion that aren’t in the Bible.
15  Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see."
At this time this man was standing before the Scribes and Pharisees as verse 13 above states. In last week’s lesson this man told his story on how he received his sight to his neighbors, see verse 8. So now standing before the leaders he is asked how it came about that he received his sight. This man saw right through the intent of these leaders and why they were so interested in how he received his sight. It wasn’t to give Jesus glory, but to persecute Him, therefore he didn’t give all the detail as to how Jesus made the clay. The Holy Spirit directed this man in his response because it wasn’t Jesus time to die for us.
As stated previously it was jealousy, pride, and envy that had these leaders in an uproar. Why, because they weren’t anointed by the Holy Spirit to perform miracles; they were losing the people because there was massive crowds following Jesus; people were recognizing that these leaders weren’t as holy as they claimed to be; their eyes were being opened that man had corrupted the scriptures over time and a yoke had been place on the shoulders of the people. This is religion and that is what the Scribes and Pharisees had the people practicing, they were in bondage to the laws that these, and past leaders had made and put in place. The people were practicing faith in manmade rules and not faith in God. This still goes on today by some denominations that model the religion of Jesus time.
The majority of people practice and keep holy the laws of a denomination for salvation and not faith in Jesus Christ. They may think their faith is in Jesus, but if asked where they will go when they die, the reply is Heaven with the justification being they do this or that which is required of the denomination they belong to. Example being: I was baptized; I go to church on Sunday; I observe Feast and Holy days; I receive communion; I was Confirmed; etc. When an example of this type is given, salvation faith is in the doctrine of the denomination and not in Jesus Christ even though they know who Jesus is and what He did, but have been taught you have to do this or that for salvation which nullifies Jesus death on the Cross. In other words Jesus dying on the Cross and rising from the dead wasn’t enough for them, they need to do more. Those established in the Christianity of a religion find it very difficult in coming out of her. It is like waking in the morning and the temperature is below zero and the bedroom has no heat. You want to stay snuggled in bed where it is warm, comfortable, and safe.
16  Therefore some of the Pharisees said, "This Man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath." Others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" And there was a division among them.
Therefore some of the Pharisees said, "This Man is not from God”; Meaning He wasn’t sent by God.
Because He does not keep the Sabbath; They assumed that their views of the Sabbath were correct, and by those views they judged others. It did not occur to them their interpretation of the law might be erroneous. Men often assume their own interpretations of the Scriptures to be infallible, and then judge and condemn all others by those interpretations.
Others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?"; They reasoned conclusively that God would not give the power of working such miracles to an impostor. The miracles were such as could not be denied, nor did the enemies of Jesus attempt to deny them or to explain them away, they were open, public, and frequent. This shows that they could not deny their reality, for had it been possible, they would have done it. The early opponents of Christianity never denied the reality of the miracles performed by Jesus and His Apostles. They always attempted to show that it was by some evil influence, or to account for the miracles in some other way than by admitting a Divine Origin.
And there was a division among them; Meaning some became believers and others remained unbelievers.
17  They said to the blind man again, "What do you say about Him because He opened your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet."
Why would these leaders want to know this man’s opinion? Verse 34 of this Chapter tells us why. If this man proclaims Jesus as being sent from God, which they suspected him to be a follower, then they will excommunicate this man; make an example of him.
With this man claiming Jesus is a prophet, this connotation states He is from God without actually saying it; it was the highest title he could give Jesus. That is, I think that the power to work such a miracle proves that He is sent from God, even though this has been done on the Sabbath, it proves that He is from God, for such a power could never have proceeded from man.
18  But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight.
Here the Jewish leaders are attempting to nullify the miracle. They don’t believe anything about Jesus and what He does and now they are calling this former blind man a liar. They now attempt to call in the parents of this man in hopes of finding out this man was not born blind. It is amazing what man will do to justify manmade laws that are viewed infallible.
19  And they asked them, saying, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?"
Here we see the Pharisees proposed three questions to the parents, by which they hoped to convict the man of falsehood: 1) Whether he was their son? 2) Whether they would affirm that he was born blind? and, 3) Whether they knew by what means he now could see? They evidently intended to intimidate the parents, so that they might give an answer to one of these questions that would convict the man of deception. We see the art to which men will resort to rather than admit the truth.
20  His parents answered them and said, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;
21  but by what means he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. He is of age; ask him. He will speak for himself."
The parents here answer the first two questions that it is their son and that he was born blind, but third question they state they don’t know who performed this miracle. Whether they knew or not we don’t know for sure. It is reasonable to assume they knew, but because of the law the Jewish leaders laid down of excommunication they feared being excommunicated.
Here we see that in Jesus time people were afraid to proclaim Jesus name just like it is today. Many proclaim Jesus with their lips only and not their heart, which tells you where their heart is. You will know them by their fruit!
22  His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.
So this verse tells us that the parents knew who healed their son’s eyes. They did fear being cast from the Synagogue. They had not only forsaken Jesus, but they threw their son under the bus.
Among the Jews there were two grades of excommunication; the one for lighter offences, and the other for greater offences. The first excluded a man for 30 days from the privilege of entering a synagogue, and from coming nearer than 72 inches or 6 feet of his wife or friends. The other was a solemn exclusion forever from worshipping in the synagogue and an exclusion from all contact with the brethren. These people were accused of being possessed by demon spirits. The leaders called this a curse, and excluded the person from all communion whatsoever with his countrymen, that they were not allowed to sell to him anything, even the necessities of life. It is probable that this latter punishment was what they intended to inflict if anyone should confess that Jesus was the Messiah: and it was the fear of this terrible punishment that deterred his parents from expressing their opinion.
23  Therefore his parents said, "He is of age; ask him."
The Holy Spirit brings this out twice as to the position taken by the parents, in that they were adamant in refusing to accept any responsibility whatsoever for the opinions of their son about his Healer (Reynolds).
24  So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, "Give God the glory! We know that this Man is a sinner."
So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, "Give God the glory!; The statement about giving God the Glory, was the words used in making an oath. To give God praise was equivalent of swearing to tell the truth. Joshua 7:19 Now Joshua said to Achan, "My son, I beg you, give glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession to Him, and tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me."
We know that this Man is a sinner."; They were not willing to admit that this man had been cured, but wanted a confession that this miracle was all fabricated; that he declared a falsehood and by confessing his sins it would give praise and honor to God who condemns all falsehoods, and he would then set thing right between him and God. To persuade him to do this, they added that they knew, or were satisfied that Jesus was a sinner. As they considered this point settled, they urged him to confess that he had attempted to deceive them.
25  He answered and said, "Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see."
This man states he doesn’t know if Jesus is a sinner or not, which no doubt is a true statement from him, but he pulls the attention back to the miracle of him seeing now. He is standing by the truth of his experience and proclaiming the glorious thing that transpired with him.
A Born Again person has this same type of experience with Jesus and wants all to know His Love, Mercy, and Grace.
Next week we will continue this discussion between the man and the Sanhedrin.

Sinners Prayer; Pray this, and if you believe it with your heart, Jesus will save you!
“Lord Jesus I know I am a sinner.  I confess my sins to you; I am sorry for my sins; I repent (Meaning, desiring to turn from a sinful lifestyle.) of all my sins, and I am asking for your forgiveness.  I believe that only you can forgive sin.  I commit my life to you and ask you to come into my heart, direct, and take charge of my life.  I believe that you died to set me free from my sinful lifestyle and you rose from the dead to give me eternal life, and right now you are seated at the Right Hand of God Almighty. I believe you are the Son of God; the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life, and my Savior.”  I believe this and have faith you will make a new person out of me, by sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in my heart and lead me in a new life. In Jesus name I pray Amen.”

Proverbs 20:11-20
11  Even a child is known by his deeds, Whether what he does is pure and right.
12  The hearing ear and the seeing eye, The LORD has made them both.
13  Do not love sleep, lest you come to poverty; Open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with bread.
14  "It is good for nothing," cries the buyer; But when he has gone his way, then he boasts.
15  There is gold and a multitude of rubies, But the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
16  Take the garment of one who is surety for a stranger, And hold it as a pledge when it is for a seductress.
17  Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man, But afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel.
18  Plans are established by counsel; By wise counsel wage war.
19  He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets; Therefore do not associate with one who flatters with his lips.
20  Whoever curses his father or his mother, His lamp will be put out in deep darkness.
Father God, reveal to us the miracles your Son Jesus performs in our lives, so that we can give Him all the glory He deserves. In Jesus name we pray.  Amen!
Gospel of John 9:1-12 NKJV
In Chapter 8 Jesus introduces Himself as the Light of the world, while John Chapter 9 proclaims eyes that have not seen light to be miraculously opened by Christ. The light the blind eyes could not see, now sees light of two types, the world and the pure light of Jesus.
We see four different reactions to Jesus. The neighbors revealed surprise and skepticism; the Pharisees showed disbelief and prejudice; the parents believed but kept quiet for fear of excommunication; and the healed man showed consistent, growing faith. Each reaction to Jesus allowed the man to reach a clearer understanding of the one who had healed him.
1  Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth.
The timeframe of this event is disputed, some say this took place as Jesus exited the temple at the end of the Feast of Tabernacles, while others say it took place a few months later at the Feast of Dedications. The Feast of Tabernacles is in the Fall and the Feast of Dedications is in the winter. John 10:22 Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. With the discussion that takes place in this Chapter one would think it took place as Jesus exited the Temple, but we really don’t know.
Just as the woman caught in adultery in the previous chapter and this blind man, they both symbolize Israel, as an adulterous church and as a blind nation.
The world without Christ, is morally and spiritually blind and does not even realize it. All brought about by the Fall of mankind, and affects every sphere of society and in every capacity.
It is impossible to “show” a blind man anything, simply because he is helpless to see. Therefore, this symbolism tells us that it is impossible for us to reach the sinner through our brain power, only Jesus can lead a sinner to repentance, all we can do is plant the seed of salvation.
2  And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
It was a belief in Jesus time that sin caused events to happen in a person’s life or a person was born with a disability. Many times I have stated that trials, disease, hard times, and sickness could be a result of the life we live. I do believe the things that happen in our lives, there is a lesson to be learned, therefore we should ask God to give us strength for the trial and a clearer perspective on what is happening. Although the majority of times we can’t see or understand why certain things happen to us, all we can do is trust in God knowing that He is in control and has a plan for us. As we see in the next verse sin has nothing to do with this man’s blindness Luke 13:1-4. The book of Job also teaches us that events in our lives is not the result of sin, therefore studying life events we can learned things that will make us better children of God. If Jesus disciples were knowledgeable of Job and the trial he endured, they wouldn’t have had to ask the question.
3  Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.
Jesus answers His disciples question with this verse and confirms that sin doesn’t always cause disabilities, sickness, disease, hardships, financial burdens, relationship situations, etc. In this situation God orchestrated this man’s blindness in order to display His power of healing no matter what the circumstance is. Why, so people will see there is a living God; that people will come to Him; that old myths can be silenced; that faith can result in healing; or most probable that through this miracle of curing this man that Jesus is truly God, the Son of God, the Messiah. This would fit because of all the discussion involved with Jesus attempting to tell the Jewish leaders who He was. Jesus is the light of the world and came to show love and mercy, not condemnation.
4  I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.
I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; What Jesus is saying in this phrase is that “day” equals our “physical life”. We are to be diligent in doing the Fathers works while here on earth. Our time here is only a speck when placed on the timeline of eternity and we need to make the most of it for God.
The night is coming when no one can work; Jesus is referring to His and our physical death. When we die we can no longer do God’s work. Jesus knew His time was coming to a close on earth.
5  As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."
There is no doubt with this statement that Jesus is fully aware of who He is; His divinity; and purpose for coming to earth as a human. What the sun does for the physical world Jesus is doing for the moral world. Without light in the physical world death takes over. Jesus is light for the spirit and soul, eternal life, without Him it is darkness now and forever.
6  When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay.
When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; God made Adam from the dust of the earth, He used natural earthly material and breathed life into the form He shaped out of clay, life that comes from a divine nature. The ground/dust/clay mixed with divine spittle results in something being created, life granted to eyes to see, just like God creating man from dust and breathe.
And He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay; With this mixture of natural and divine anointing, the eyes of this blind man were opened; life was given to his eyes.
How does this miracle and all that has been said leading up to this verse relate to redemption? The next verse has some clues for us.
7  And He said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.
And He said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam"; Washing in the pool of Siloam symbolizes being washed in the shed blood of Jesus which cleanses and heals all.
(which is translated, Sent); Some believe “sent” refers to Jesus being sent to earth for the redemption of mankind, others don’t. Jesus gave a command here to this man, go wash in the pool of Siloam”. He sent him, was it to see if the man had enough faith and would be obedient to what Jesus told him to do? Maybe, but let’s refer back to verse three, Jesus stated this, “that the works of God should be revealed in him”. This miracle was to show the power and glory of God; what God can do in our lives; that nothing is too big for God to do; that we are to trust in God for all things; that we are to put our faith in God and not in man made things. So was this a test of faith through obedience?
So he went and washed, and came back seeing; This case shows us that we shall obey the commands of God, however unmeaning or mysterious they may appear. God always has a reason for everything He directs us to do, and our faith and willingness to obey Him are often tried when we can’t see the reason of His requirements.
This man obeyed what Jesus told him to do, even though he probably didn’t understand why. The point being is he had enough faith to be obedient to Jesus and go perform the task he was commanded to do. He didn’t question the command; Jesus didn’t tell him he would see if he went and washed his eyes, he just went and did it on faith and trust.
This is a very important lesson for us here, to trust fully in Jesus; to be obedient to the spiritual voice inside us; to believe in what the Bible says and try to fully live by what it says. The majority of people today are of the opinion that the Bible is diluted after 2,000 years (New Testament). They say it is like the phone game where you have 7 people and a person on the end whispers to the person next to them something and when it gets to the 7th person it isn’t close to what was said by person one. This is a belief that allows people to make up their own rules to live by, which is contrary to the Bible; verses taken out of context; or they don’t know what the Bible says because they have never read it. Bear this in mind the Bibles we have KJV, NKJV, ESV, NASB, NIV, NLT, Catholic Bible, etc. the New Testament was translated from Greek and Hebrew by different groups of people and they all state the same thing, but maybe in a little different language style to be better understood, but the same. So those that don’t heed the red text of the Bible, being the voice of Jesus; the inspired words of the Apostles from the Holy Spirit; the Commandments of God in the Old Testament, are they being obedient to God; do they know God with their mind or heart; are they believing in man’s ways or Gods ways? John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. Isn’t the red letter text in the New Testament Jesus words as He walked this earth? Yet people don’t heed His words, they abide by a religious denominations words or their own thoughts and words. Obedience removed Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, which was designed to be for eternity!
8  Therefore the neighbors and those who previously had seen that he was blind said, "Is not this he who sat and begged?"
This blind man was not a stranger to the community. He didn’t come from outside the community but was known to sit in a particular place and beg. He was a native of Jerusalem, and known to the people. You can imagine the commotion that was taking place and the faith being confirmed of many that were undecided as to whom Jesus was?
9  Some said, "This is he." Others said, "He is like him." He said, "I am he."
This verse tells us that great discussions where transpiring as to this being the blind beggar. This humble man that was once blind and sat at the lowest rank in society is now bold to claim, “I am he”. This man can be compared to a new born child of God. When a person accepts Jesus as their Saviour many question the new life the person is living. Let’s call this person Joe. They ask what has happened to Joe; it looks like Joe, but Joe never acted like that; Joe has a demon inside of him; poor Joe, he has lost his soul; etc. This skepticism is what was going on with the people that knew this former blind person, but this blind man was excited and exuberant about being healed and capable of seeing. He was going around telling all who healed him; he had great joy in his heart. Joe has the same excitement and exuberance as the healed blind man. Joe is going around and telling all that he sees about how he is Born Again and the events leading up to his birth of becoming a child of God and that now he feels complete inside and has great joy in his heart because he has the Holy Spirit living within his heart. He wants everyone to know in hopes of them accepting Jesus and having the same joy in their heart that he has. It is a feeling he never had before, but the skepticism around the blind man and around Joe is disbelief. The blind man and Joe have both experience an encounter with Jesus that has changed their life and they want everyone to know about them and how Jesus touched them and changed their life forever.
10  Therefore they said to him, "How were your eyes opened?"
11  He answered and said, "A Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, 'Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed, and I received sight."
Here the man tells all who anointed his eyes, at what point the blind man learns of Jesus name we do not know. Someone told him or maybe he overheard Jesus name mentioned while his eyes were being anointed.
12 Then they said to him, "Where is He?" He said, "I do not know."
Does this question being asked sounds like cynicism? Jesus had withdrawn Himself and was gone, whether on account of the Jews, knowing they would be irritated by this miracle, or whether to avoid all popular applause and glory, which He sought no glory for anything that He did. It may be on both accounts, this question, not out of good will to Christ but that they might apprehend Him, and bring Him before the Sanhedrim for doing work on the Sabbath. Such enmity there is in carnal men, at the conversion of sinners, instead of rejoicing.
This man did not know where Jesus was and so it is sometimes with a converted sinner, or so it seems. The life of Gods child will at times experience quietness. This man may have returned to where he was when Jesus anointed his eyes, but could not find Jesus.
We conclude this week’s lesson knowing that the Pharisees are all up in arms because Jesus performed this miracle on the Sabbath. Does Jesus get into another discussion with the Jewish leaders about the laws they instituted?

Gospel of John 8:48-59 NKJV
As we finish out this chapter we have Jesus still attempting to convince these Jewish leaders that what they are practicing is a form of religion, not faith in God. This whole chapter has been about Jesus and these leaders conversing about Jesus, who He was, what they believed in, denying Jesus as the Messiah, etc.
Our humanistic nature leads people to believe and practice faith in religion and not God. Jesus and the Apostles all preached and taught that religion leads to spiritual death and not life. Faith in God through Jesus is the only way to eternal life in Heaven. This is something hard for us to comprehend because being human we want to do things ourselves to get to Heaven. We need to go back to our childhood when we depended on our parents to provide all that we needed. This is the relationship we need with our Creator, a child like belief; faith; dependency, but as we grow up as a child and we become teenagers our mind takes on the; I can take care of myself; I’m invincible; I can figure things out for myself, I don’t need anyone telling me what to do; etc. A childlike faith is so difficult for adults because as a child we can see, hear, touch, and embrace our parents. It is a tangible relationship whereas the relationship we have with God for the most part is intangible. With this being a new year, stop and examine what type of relationship you have with Jesus. Is it the relationship you want; do you want a closer one; are you doing something about it; does your New Year resolution have a 3 or 4 to 1 ratio (3 part God and one part self)? If not, I encourage you to re-evaluate you resolution. God will bless you abundantly with a resolution that glorifies Him and not yourself.
48  Then the Jews answered and said to Him, "Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?"
The response the Jews gave here to Jesus indicates that they accused Jesus of being a Samaritan previously, even though it is not recorded. So now they thought they were justified in making this claim again, and that He had a demon inside being a Samaritan, especially since he was treating them the way He did. These Jewish leaders claimed they were the true sons of Abraham which they were physically, but not Spiritually. They also knew Jesus had been among the Samaritans quite frequently and therefore felt He was a Samaritan.
The Jews had a very ill opinion of the Samaritans, and to call a man a Samaritan, was to call him a heretic, an idolater, or an excommunicated person; for such were the Samaritans with the Jews. They charged them with corrupting the Scriptures, and with worshipping idols. The Jews viewed the Samaritans of having a demon within. So, they were saying that His Doctrine was the Samaritans; false, corrupt, in effect, a lie.
49  Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.
Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father; Here Jesus answers the leaders concerning the accusation of being possessed. By stating what He did He is claiming that what He does is good not evil. He honors God the Father by doing His will in all that He does. He taught the doctrines that exalted God. He taught that He was holy and true. He sought that men should love and obey God. He performed miracles of God. All His teaching proved this. An evil spirit would not do this, and this was sufficient proof that He was not influenced by such a spirit.
Did you notice Jesus doesn’t address the Samaritan issue? In fact why should He, after all He came to save anyone that comes to Him. Jesus didn’t just come for the Jews salvation!
And you dishonor Me; With Jesus making this claim, in effect He is saying that since they don’t honor Jesus, they don’t honor God.
50  And I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges.
And I do not seek My own glory; In essence what Jesus is saying here is that He came to earth to redeem mankind, not to glorify Himself. He came to break the bonds of sin that man is bound up in. Man cannot set himself free, only the blood of Jesus can do this.
There is One who seeks and judges; Meaning God His Father who had glorified Jesus on the mount, and would glorify Him again when raise from the dead. He would spread His Gospel in all the world and judge the nation of the Jews; bring wrath upon them, upon their nation, city and temple, for their contempt and rejection of Him. God sought Glory for Jesus, and Judged Him worthy of Glory.
51  Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death."
What Jesus is saying here is that anyone that heeds His words, the Bible, will never see eternal death, meaning Hell. Unless one is Born Again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Here and the verses following, state that abiding by the Word of God, the Bible, is the only true source; doctrine; eternal survival guide for eternity. Nowhere in the Bible does Jesus or the Apostles teach that abiding by religious rules, regulations, doctrine, catechism, etc., one will gain entry to Heaven.
John 6:49-50 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead.  50 This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. John 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." John 5:24 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.  26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?"
52  Then the Jews said to Him, "Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, 'If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.'
Then the Jews said to Him, "Now we know that You have a demon; In response to Jesus statement in verse 51these Jews now believe that Jesus was not one of them. How can anyone make a statement of keeping His teaching and never see death. They are convinced He has a demon within, at this point.
Abraham is dead, and the prophets; Here again these Jewish people are thinking of flesh and blood; the carnal body not the spiritual body. These Jewish people have no clue as to what Jesus is saying due to the fact that their faith is in their religious customs, heritage, upbringing, and laws. Had their faith been in God like Abrahams was they would have understood Jesus and what He was saying.
Abraham and the prophets were dead but their spiritual bodies were alive and well in Heaven and will be for eternity. The OT teaches faith in God and the NT teaches faith in Jesus which is one in the same for eternal life in Heaven. Neither teach faith in religious laws, denominational doctrine, customs, sacraments, etc. to save a person from Hell, only faith in God. Only realizing, we as human beings live a life of enmity toward God because of the inherited sin nature, that we need to humble ourselves before God, not man, ask for forgiveness, and have a desire to turn 180 degrees away from our sinful lifestyle, and accept Jesus into our heart.
and You say, 'If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death; These statements as given by these Pharisees, portray a perfect example of the carnal man misunderstanding the Word of God, and the religious man who perverts its meaning. Paul tells us an unsaved person struggles with interpreting the Bible in 1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. This is why unsaved people say the Bible is nothing but a bunch of stories; it has been diluted through the years; there is no God; God surely has changed in the last 2000 years, etc. Basically they don’t believe what the Bible says so they just pick and choose or fabricate what they want to believe in. They take a couple words from a verse and use them out of context to justify themselves, in other words they practice idolatry; believing in themselves and mans dogma. (John 16:8–11).
53  Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Who do You make Yourself out to be?"
Jesus did not make Himself out to be anyone great, special, or a know it all. He was humble in all actions and what He said, but these Jewish leaders made Him out to be something that He wasn’t. Their view point was that He was a poor carpenter's son; a Galilean; a Nazarene; greater than Abraham or any of the prophets; that He was God to promise security from death and eternal life by keeping the word.
These leaders had their feathers ruffled because they viewed themselves of having the authority and power to do spiritual things. They gave the permission to those they deemed holy and what to say by these Religious Leaders. They felt Jesus anointed Himself.
54  Jesus answered, "If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God.
Jesus answered, "If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing; Meaning if Jesus promoted Himself it would be empty and vain, and not continue over time, it would fade away. 2 Corinthians 10:18 For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends. What is of man will fade away. Acts 5:38-39 And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing;  39 but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found to fight against God." Acts 5:34-40
It is My Father who honors Me; Jesus was honored by the Father several ways; by a voice from heaven, both at His baptism, and transfiguration declaring Him to be His beloved Son; by the works and miracles He did by Him; by raising Him from the dead; setting Him at His own right hand; pouring forth His Spirit on His disciples and ensuing His Gospel in every place.
Of whom you say that He is your God; Jesus has repeatedly stated in every way possible that if they truly knew God, they would know Him.
55  Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, 'I do not know Him,' I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and keep His word.
There is no mistaking what Jesus is saying here. He is being direct and to the point. At this point I believe Jesus is quite perturbed with these people and is why He is being so direct.
56  Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad."
Though Abraham was not permitted to live to see the times of the Messiah, yet he was permitted to have a prophetic view of Him, and also of the plan of his coming. Abraham was permitted to have a view of the death of the Messiah as a sacrifice for sin, represented by the command to offer Isaac.
So we learn from this statement by Christ, that some of the Prophets and Patriarchs of old, at least Abraham, and no doubt David and Isaiah, etc., fully understood the coming Incarnation. It was not a mystery to them, and it brought great joy to their hearts.
Therefore, Jesus is saying to the Religious Leaders of Israel, that there was no reason why they should not know Him, especially considering that Abraham knew this some 2,000 years before.
57  Then the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?"
Sarcastically, these Jews twisted the words that Jesus stated. Abraham longed to see the Messiah, not that Jesus lived during Abraham’s time, although Jesus did see Abraham in the Spiritual world.
The Jews believed a man did not reach full maturity regarding wisdom and intellect until fifty years of age, that why they mentioned 50 years old.
58  Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."
Jesus now clearly makes the supreme declaration that He is Jehovah. In essence He said, “Before Abraham was brought into being I was eternally existent.”
He then said, “Abraham was, but I am”, not that He came into existence before Abraham did, but that He never came into being at any time, because He had always existed. By this statement we see in the next verse that it infuriates these leaders.
59  Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
At this point Jesus says no more and quietly exits through the crowd of people.
Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
