Psalms 121:1-8 A Song of Ascents. I will lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; The LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.
Father God, help us to harness our eyes, mind, heart, and ears so that we can practice purity to produce a pure heart, which will lead to that moment when we see You. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Matthew 5:8 NKJV
Blessed are the pure in heart! This Beatitude hold true to the previous ones and is a result of the first one when a person “poor in spirit” realizes they need Jesus in their life. This Beatitude is another form of assurance from God that a believer is saved and will one day join Him in Heaven. A person is regenerated into a new creation when they give their heart to Jesus. With the Holy Spirit coming into their heart to live, the individual takes on a whole new way of thinking and acting through the power of the Holy Spirit. John 14:17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. 2 Timothy 1:14 That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. 1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
8  Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.
The words of this Beatitude in Greek translate to, “Happy are the pure in heart, for they and they alone will see God.” This is a very sobering thought and one that many modern day churches do not preach. Many preach that Jesus is all about love and He will accept you no matter what you do or how you live. Yes, He is all about love, but He is also our judge and hates sin, He is righteous and he expects us to walk in His light.
The dictionary says that “purity” is; freedom from foreign mixtures or matter, cleanness, freedom from foulness or dirt, freedom from guilt or defilement. To be pure means that you’re living a “clean” life.
This purity in heart of a Born Again Saint pertains to a new way of thinking morally for an individual. It is a new standard the person takes on which is the result of becoming one of God’s children. With the Holy Spirit living within, the person gets conviction when they are even thinking about doing something that violates one of God’s Commandments. They will have great conviction if they follow through and commit the sinful act and will have to go to Jesus and ask forgiveness. This change in a person’s life is because the person has surrendered their life to Jesus and that is when Jesus sends the Comforter to live in that person’s heart. John 14:26  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. It is because of this act of repentance and the power of the Holy Spirit within, that the Ten Commandments come alive within the person in a whole new dimension. This is one of the duties of the Holy Spirit, to bring conviction upon the individual when they contemplate or execute sin. A new believer will get conviction when they use the word “hell” in a conversation or when they are upset, because scripture states filthy language is not for God’s Children. Colossians 3:6-11 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience,  7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.  8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.  9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,  10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,  11 where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all. We are to act in the image of Jesus so a light will shine forth from us to those around us. Jesus did not use foul language so if we are His family why should we. Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
I have to ask this question, if using the word “hell” is considered filthy language then what about using God or Jesus name in normal conversation as a form of expression, in other words without meaning which is the definition of “vain”? What does God think about that? Using God’s name this way is a violation of a Commandment; Exodus 20:7 "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. If a person has filthy language or uses God’s name in vain, then they should be asking themselves, are they one of God’s Children? 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?   If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are?
This “pure in heart” is not man’s standard of purity, but God’s, which is of far greater magnitude than man could ever begin to think. Man’s standard of holiness is all wrapped up in religious rules and regulations they devise, just like the Scribes and Pharisees. For instance, the Bible defines a saint as one that gives their heart to Jesus and is Born Again, while mans definition of a saint as a dead person that performed a couple miracles while living. 1 Corinthians 2:13 These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
Jesus tried to get the Scribes and Pharisees to see and understand this concept, but they couldn’t and He compared them to a shiny new casket that looked beautiful on the outside, but what laid inside was nothing but a rotting corpse. Matthew 23:27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness.
It is a purity of mind, motives, and principles which causes God’s child to desire a holy heart and not just external actions. Man looks at the outward appearance of a person, but God looks within the soul or heart for holiness. As a child of God, we are to be holy. 1 Peter 1:13-16 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, "BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY."
So, all this talk about being pure and holy, let’s look at purity a little closer. There are three types of purity and the highest form of purity being “perfect purity”. It is what we will be after we die and we reside in the third Heaven with Jesus. We will have a glorified body that will be as pure as He is. 1 John 3:2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. John 7:39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. 1 Corinthians 15:50-53 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption.  51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.  53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
The second type of purity is “positional purity”. It is this positional purity that a Born Again Saint is in. It is where they have placed their faith and that being the Cross. God saw our plight and as human beings we do not have the capability of overcoming sin, so He sent His only begotten Son as the perfect spotless sacrifice. It is through the shedding of His pure blood that gives life so that we can have a chance at becoming holy. When we come to the realization that nothing we do in form of good deeds will gain us entry to Heaven, and we place our faith in the acts of the Cross and accept that unconditional love of Jesus, we receive a blood transfusion so that we can sustain life, eternal life. The moment we accept Jesus as our Saviour, we receive His blood in our veins through the power of the Holy Spirit because we cannot fight off sin under our own power. In other words we get a spiritual blood transfusion. When we accept Jesus, we are justified or acquitted of our sinful past, it is forgotten, and God see our past no more because of Jesus blood flowing in our veins. God sees us as His adopted child, son or daughter, just as Jesus is his Son. It is through this that we receive eternal life, and we shall see God. This is “positional purity”.
The third type of purity is “practical or practicing purity”, which is the most difficult. After accepting Jesus as our Saviour, we are expected to live or practice purity. We cannot do this alone because our flesh is weak and we like to please our flesh. This is why the Holy Spirit comes into ones heart to help the new Born Again Saint battle the flesh and Satan. For instance some of us, including myself like to eat and sometimes I overeat resulting in gluttony. Some of us glory in gossip and others in sports. All are a form of sin and as a child of God we are to live as Jesus did. We can’t do it ourselves and that is why we need the power of the Holy Spirit; the power of Jesus blood within us. This is “practical purity”.
With “practical purity” being the most difficult, what strategy do you have to battle sin? Yes the Holy Spirit will be with you to help, but that help consists of conviction of wrong/sin. You as a person have a free will to do, or not to do. There are five things we can do to combat our fleshly desires.
First we need a covenant with our eyes; Job made a covenant with his eyes not to look at things or people that would cause his flesh to lust. Job 31:1 "I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman? In today’s world every direction a person looks, there is immorality being portrayed. Television, movies, billboards, newspapers, magazines, internet, etc., in some form or another, use immorality to get us to look and ponder. Our eyes are the windows to our soul. They are the gates through which most impurity gets into our heart and mind. There is a song that goes like this; “Oh be careful little eyes what you see; oh be careful little eyes what you see; for the Father up above is looking down in love, so be careful little eyes what you see.” So we must make a covenant with our eyes like Job did and guard against what we look at that causes our minds to contemplate sin, like “R” rated movies, TV programs where actors wear provocative clothing or gross violence, magazines at the checkout counters with sexy covers, internet advertising that pops up, etc.
Second we need to make a covenant with our ears; Everything in one above (eyes), which is visual, also pertains to what we listen to. What we hear can paint a picture in our mind and cause us to ponder also. Whether it is movies, TV, music, or radio talk shows the language can be of a sensual, filthy, or blasphemous nature. So we need to make a commitment of not listening to these things that lead us away from God.
Third we need to consecrate our minds; Our eyes and ears cause our minds to ponder ideas and thoughts that tickle our flesh. Before we are saved we are evil in God’s eyes. As far back as Noah and beyond, mankind is evil. Genesis 6:5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Don’t fall victim to thinking that you can’t control what you think. You may not be able to control what you think at all times, but you can bridle it and control it in the right direction. You can pull back on the reins and say whoa when you find your mind wondering and you are thinking of bad thoughts, whether it be lustful, gossipy, deceitful, grudgingly, etc. Cry out; in the name of Jesus of Nazareth get behind thee flesh/Satan, be gone!; Holy Spirit help, I need you! You have to decide what you will watch and listen to so that you won’t be tempted.
Fourth take up the Bible daily; Read the Bible daily and study what it says. Get the Bible on your cell phone so you can read it when on public transportation if it is a time of temptation. Memorize verses that denounce sin, so you can call upon those verses when tempted. When your mind is filled with God’s truth, it won’t have room for bad thoughts.
Have a strategy for your life to battle Satan’s attacks; Satan knows you better than you know yourself. He knows what buttons to push to set you off, so analyze who, what, where, and when temptation raises its ugly head, and then make some changes to avoid the fuel that sparks the mind and heart that ponders sin. Like if it is a commute to and from work through explicit advertising and filthy language then change your route.
For they shall see God; What a beautiful and wonderful promise, “Seeing God”! In order for us to one day see God, we must make Godly living in our lives here on earth a priority. BE HOLY FOR I AM HOLY!

Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Sinners Prayer; Pray this, and if you believe it with your heart, Jesus will save you!

“Lord Jesus I know I am a sinner.  I confess my sins to you; I am sorry for my sins; I repent (Meaning, desiring to turn from a sinful lifestyle.) of all my sins, and I am asking for your forgiveness of all of my sins.  I believe that only you can forgive sin.  I commit my life to you and ask you to come into my heart, direct, and take charge of my life.  I believe that you died to set me free from my sinful lifestyle and you rose from the dead to give me eternal life, and right now you are seated at the Right Hand of God Almighty. I believe you are the Son of God; the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life, and my Savior.”  I believe this and have faith you will make a new person out of me, by sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in my heart and lead me in a new life. In Jesus name I pray Amen.”  (John 3:16,17; Romans 3:23; 6:23; 5:8; 10:9-13; Ephesians 2:8-10; 1 John 5:11-14; 1:6-10) (Sin: Rom. 1:22-32; Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 5:3-7)

Psalms 120:1-7 In my distress I cried to the LORD, And He heard me. Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips And from a deceitful tongue. What shall be given to you, Or what shall be done to you, You false tongue? Sharp arrows of the warrior, With coals of the broom tree! Woe is me, that I dwell in Meshech, That I dwell among the tents of Kedar! My soul has dwelt too long With one who hates peace. I am for peace; But when I speak, they are for war.
Father God, bless us each day with love in our hearts so that we can show mercy to those around us, just as you are merciful to us. Help us to be bold and unafraid to be merciful to others. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Matthew 5:7 NKJV
This Beatitude of Mercy is a product of being a believer in Jesus Christ and what He did for us at Calvary. It falls right in line with the change that happens in a person’s life after they give their heart to the Lord. Without a change in a person’s life (thoughts and actions), they aren’t saved based on Bible scripture. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Romans 7:6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter. Ephesians 4:22-24 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts,  23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,  24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. Colossians 3:9-10 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,  10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him. These are just a few verses that state a change will occur within a person’s life when they accept Jesus with their heart. This change within a person is part of the assurance that they are saved.
Let’s define “merciful” and “mercy” so we can get a good idea of what this Beatitude is all about.
Mer’cy, n. [L. misericordia.] That benevolence, mildness or tenderness of heart which disposes a person to overlook injuries, or to treat an offender better than he deserves; the disposition that tempers justice, and induces an injured person to forgive trespasses and injuries, and to forbear punishment, or inflict less than law or justice will warrant. In this sense, there is perhaps no word in our language precisely synonymous with mercy. That which comes nearest to it is grace. It implies benevolence, tenderness, mildness, pity or compassion, and clemency, but exercised only towards offenders. Mercy is a distinguishing attribute of the Supreme Being.
Mer’ciful, a. [from mercy.] Having or exercising mercy; compassionate; tender; disposed to pity offenders and to forgive their offenses; unwilling to punish for injuries; applied appropriately to the Supreme being.
7  Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy.
Meaning, those who are so affected by the sufferings of others, that they be willing to lessen their fellow human beings affliction some way. This is evidence of piety, and it is said they who show mercy to others shall obtain it. This love is done out of love from the heart of God’s children, because they wish to glorify God through the love they have for Jesus in their heart, and with a desire that He should be honored, and with a feeling that we are benefiting one of his creatures. Then he will regard it as done to him, and will reward us.
Have you ever heard of a play written by Lorraine Hansberry titled “A Raisin In The Sun”? It is a lesson in mercy and it goes like this.
An African-American family inherits ten thousand dollars from a life insurance policy and the mother sees that money as a chance to help her family escape from the ghetto and move into a real house in the country. Her daughter, a brilliant student, wants to use the money to fulfill her dream of going to medical school. But her son convinces everyone that he can take the money, start a business with a friend, and accomplish all those things. He promises the family that if they will give him the money, he’ll return all the blessings their hard lives have denied them.
Against her better judgment, the mother gives her son the money, believing that he deserves a chance to succeed. But the son’s friend skips town with the money leaving the son with the task of facing his mother and sister. His sister lashes out with an onslaught of ugly expletives with no limits or end. The mother interrupts and states, “I thought I taught you to love your brother?” She responded, “Love him? There is nothing left to love!”
The mother now responds with mercy. There is always something left to love. If you ain’t learned that, you ain’t learned nothin’. Have you cried for that boy today? I don’t mean for yourself and the family because we lost all that money, I mean for him, for what he’s been through, and what it’s done to him. Child, when do you think it’s the time to love somebody the most? When they done good and made things easy for everybody? Well then, you ain’t through learnin’ because that ain’t the time at all, It’s when he’s at his lowest and can’t believe in himself ‘cause the world done whipped him so. When you starts measurin’ somebody, measure him right, child. Measure him right. Make sure you done taken into account what hills and valleys he come through before he got to wherever he is. That’s mercy, and child, you need to learn mercy.
If there is anything we can do to imitate Jesus, it is showing mercy. After all there is no greater showing of mercy by God or Jesus that transpired on the Cross at Calvary. It is through mercy that Jesus died on the cross for us when it should have been us, because we are the sinners not Jesus. It is because of Jesus love for us and Him willing to forgive us of our wretch lifestyle, that we are able to enter into His Kingdom, if we so desire. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. 1 Timothy 2:4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. Ezekiel 33:11 Say to them: 'As I live,' says the Lord GOD, 'I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?'
Albert Barnes quotes this pertaining to mercy and should raise questions in your life as to how you practice mercy towards others. “To us, guilty sinners; to us, wretched, dying, and exposed to eternal woe, he has shown his mercy by giving his Son to die for us; by expressing his willingness to pardon and save us; and by sending his Spirit to renew and sanctify our hearts. Each day of our life, each hour, and each moment, we partake of his undeserved mercy. All the blessings we enjoy are proofs of his mercy. If we, then, show mercy to the poor, the wretched, the guilty, it shows that we are like God. We have his spirit, and shall not lose our reward. And we have abundant opportunity to do it. Our world is full of guilt and woe, which we may help to relieve; and every day of our lives we have opportunity, by helping the poor and wretched, and by forgiving those who injure us, to show that we are like God.”
Being merciful goes beyond the mere thought, and portrays action, not just a feeling of pity. The proposal is, that if one does not show Mercy to others, and this means in action as well as thought, God will not show Mercy. Realizing how dependent we are on the Mercy of God, we should be quick to obey.
This action, action of mercy and not of thought, is what I find to be the most difficult, meaning knowing what to do in certain situations. We have all experienced situations of not knowing what to do or how to help someone. Sometimes the answer is simple and others more complex. Some situations can be resolved through prayer, but sometimes more than prayer is required. In some situations to get involved it could be a physical risk. Many times the root of the problem is the lifestyle being lived and the starting place is accepting Jesus, but that is most difficult for people to accept. This is why action can be difficult, because maybe the person wants money, but in the back of your mind knowing the money won’t go for the essentials of life. Probably, everyone has been in these situations and know what I’m talking about, and have felt they are helpless and not living up to Jesus expectations in showing mercy through actions.
The story Jesus tells us about the Good Samaritan is a prime example of mercy; mind and action. Luke 10:30-35 Then Jesus answered and said: "A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.  31 Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.  32 Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side.  33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion.  34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.  35 On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.' Some of the passersby didn’t want to get involved for one reason or the other, but the
Samaritan chose to show mercy. It is possible some of the passersby showed mercy in thought by thinking how sad, poor man, or even prayed for the victim, which is showing mercy with their mind, but the Samaritan showed mercy through actions. In today’s society, with a similar situation, would you be the Good Samaritan?
For a Christian, mercy is a Spirit driven ability to express practical, compassionate, and cheerful love toward someone who is suffering. In the Bible and today’s society it pertains to those easily ignored; the crippled, sick, deformed, aged, mentally ill, etc., in other words, those less fortunate than ourselves. Mercy is the noblest virtue of all that expresses tenderness in the midst of a fallen world. Our society preaches to take care of self first, which goes completely against the teachings of God’s Word. We are to love God first and then our neighbors as ourselves. We are last! Luke 10:27 So he answered and said, “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND,' and 'YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.”
If we are merciful, we will receive mercy from God when we stand before Him. If we judge we will be judged using the same reasoning that we use. Matthew 7:2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. James 2:13 For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
If we forgive others we will be forgiven, but if we are unforgiving we will one day find that God is unforgiving toward us. Matthew 6:14-15 "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
This is all an expression of love and mercy. You can’t have love without mercy or mercy without love, they go hand in hand. Mercy encompasses love for fellow mankind, compassion, empathy, helpfulness actions, prayer, forgiveness, not being judgmental, etc. Mercy is a characteristic of God and we are made in His image, if we proclaim to be a Christian, we are and will display this characteristic if we are one of God’s children. Anyone that practices mercy daily will become more like God with each passing day, but if we make no attempts, we will distance ourselves from God.
How merciful are you? Do you look for opportunities to show mercy? Being merciful for some people comes natural. I know I fall short in this virtue and have work to do concerning mercy, but with the help of the Holy Spirit, I will be watching more closely for situations around me.
In closing we need to ask God to give us sensitivity to those around us; to look for people with needs and then reach out in mercy. The world wants us to believe we should only provide for ourselves, but true happiness is when we are merciful and can minister to others in need. The merciful will receive mercy and find true happiness in being merciful to others.

Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.

Psalms 119:160-176 The entirety of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever. Princes persecute me without a cause, But my heart stands in awe of Your word. I rejoice at Your word As one who finds great treasure. I hate and abhor lying, But I love Your law. Seven times a day I praise You, Because of Your righteous judgments. Great peace have those who love Your law, And nothing causes them to stumble. LORD, I hope for Your salvation, And I do Your commandments. My soul keeps Your testimonies, And I love them exceedingly. I keep Your precepts and Your testimonies, For all my ways are before You. Let my cry come before You, O LORD; Give me understanding according to Your word. Let my supplication come before You; Deliver me according to Your word. My lips shall utter praise, For You teach me Your statutes. My tongue shall speak of Your word, For all Your commandments are righteousness. Let Your hand become my help, For I have chosen Your precepts. I long for Your salvation, O LORD, And Your law is my delight. Let my soul live, and it shall praise You; And let Your judgments help me. I have gone astray like a lost sheep; Seek Your servant, For I do not forget Your commandments.
Father God, through the power of the Holy Spirit I ask for conviction of our sinful lifestyle so that we can turn from our sins (repent) and then have an empty and clean heart for your Son Jesus to come and live within each of us. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Matthew 5:6 NKJV
This Beatitude is about those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Just as a person or persons shipwrecked on a deserted island hunger and thirst for food, water, and rescue, a soul that is lost in sin also hungers and thirsts to be fed and rescued. Many don’t know what that inner desire is, or why they feel empty within living the life they live, and are always searching for happiness or something to satisfy that hunger. They don’t realize what it is they are craving, but it is that gift of Grace from God that comes with confession, repentance, and accepting Jesus as their Saviour. Without this their soul will die, and be forever in the flames of Hell when they depart from this earth, based on scripture. That desire or craving that is deep within each person, is a desire to live, live eternally with their creator, the way God intended things to be, but Satan intervened. It is the inherited sin nature from Satan that keeps our focus on our fleshly wants and desires of the world that keeps us separated from God. This is why Jesus came in human form, to be the true sacrifice, so we can choose to place our faith in Him for salvation and Him only. Salvation is through faith in Jesus and what He did on the Cross of Calvary for all mankind. There is not enough good deeds, prayers, or offerings we can do to earn our way to Heaven. Heaven can only be obtained through repentance of our lifestyle and asking Jesus into our life.
6  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness; What Jesus is saying here is that many people live in poverty, spiritual poverty. A. W. Tozer noted, “Great people of Christendom have had an unquenchable hunger for God”. The writers of the book of Psalms mentioned many times they hungered for God. Just to name a few; David, Psalms 27:4 One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple. The sons of Korah, Psalms 42:1-2 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God.  2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? David in the wilderness, Psalms 63:1 O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water. Throughout all of Psalm 119 there is a hunger and thirst by the Psalmist, as we well know because it is Psalm 119 that has been listed now since December 25th. Just to mention a few; Psalms 119:34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart. Psalms 119:40 Behold, I long for Your precepts; Revive me in Your righteousness. Psalms 119:58 I entreated Your favor with my whole heart; Be merciful to me according to Your word. Psalms 119:145-147 I cry out with my whole heart; Hear me, O LORD! I will keep Your statutes.  146 I cry out to You; Save me, and I will keep Your testimonies.  147 I rise before the dawning of the morning, And cry for help; I hope in Your word.
All of these verses reveal a hunger or thirst for God’s righteousness and by studying God’s Word we know that Moses, Abraham, Elijah, David, John, Paul, Peter, etc. all had that thirst to know God more abundantly. This hunger isn’t just a onetime thing, it is one that grows. The more we satisfy our hunger with the word of God, the more we want. This hunger isn’t like our appetite of physical food where we are satisfied once we eat something. This spiritual hunger is one that grows as our relationship with Jesus grows. The more we read the Bible the more we want to understand and live it, and that is exactly what we need spiritually to stay walking close to God. Our hunger for Jesus is controlled by us. Many people claim to be Christians, but practice religion based on their schedule; what is convenient for them. Church on Sunday for 1 ½ hours and they are good to go for the week living their life without change. Jesus said that it is the spiritually hungry and thirsty who will be happy, for they’ll be filled with the satisfying presence of the Lord. What do you hunger for?
Is Spiritual Hunger the Reality of Your Faith? How well do you know God? Do you have a hunger to learn more about what the Bible teaches? Do you strive to live a better life based upon the teachings of the Bible? Do you look for Bible based activities to attend and learn from? These are all good desires to have and indicating we are seeking a closer relationship with Jesus. We have to have a desire to seek out a righteous lifestyle. The Bible teaches that we must seek, ask, and knock. Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Matthew 7:7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. These attributes are a good indication that you have the right relationship with Jesus and you want to magnify that relationship.
Many people call themselves Christians, but do not seek after the things of God. These people have what you would call an entry level relationship with God. They assume since they know who Jesus is, and that He died on the Cross for mankind, that is all they need to know. They are more consumed at pleasing themselves by means of worldly things. If there isn’t a holy dissatisfaction in your heart about your spiritual life, and a hungering and thirsting to go farther with God, then there is something missing in your faith. I love God and His word, but the Bible teaches we are to hunger for His word as we grow in faith. Spiritual hunger is a blessed assurance within our hearts that we truly belong to Him. A true Christian will own a Bible that doesn’t collect dust.
Is Spiritual Growth the Results of Spiritual Hunger? We all know the story about the rich man that came to Jesus and left with his head hanging because he wasn’t willing to give up his worldly living and material luxuries. This rich man is the perfect example of what Spiritual hunger is all about. We can’t ride the spiritual fence; either we are on Jesus side of the fence or the worlds (Satan) side. We can’t say all the perfect things and continue living a sinful life, and call ourselves Christians in God’s eyes, because if we do we are being hypocrites.
Matthew 19:16-22 Now behold, one came and said to Him, "Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?"  17 So He said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments."  18 He said to Him, "Which ones?" Jesus said, " 'YOU SHALL NOT MURDER,' 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY,' 'YOU SHALL NOT STEAL,' 'YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS,'  19 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER,' and, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' "  20 The young man said to Him, "All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?"  21 Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."  22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
This rich man represents modern day society. He knew Jesus, who He was, the miracles He performed, what He stood for, what He preached and taught, but that is as far as the relationship went. The rich man knew Jesus with his mind and not his heart, like so many people do. Many, many people claim to know Jesus because they deem themselves good (Above; Jesus defines good as; No one is good but One, that is, God.), they do good deeds, they go to church on Sunday, they give money to charity, they aren’t thieves, they don’t kill, etc. These people are banking on their reasoning for eternal life, and are only fooling themselves. Their faith is in their actions and thoughts and not faith in Jesus and understanding what Jesus did for them on the Cross so they could have eternal life. So in essence what Jesus is telling this rich man is if you can’t give up your love of money, material things, and worldly pleasures, then you really don’t know me with your heart and you don’t belong to me.
Early in Jesus ministry He was followed by huge crowds of people. These people wanted the miracles of Jesus but not the commitment Jesus required to be in his family. Jesus tells them what they need to do if they want to follow Him, and as a result many left. Matthew 10:34-39 "Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.  35 For I have come to 'SET A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW';  36 and 'A MAN'S ENEMIES WILL BE THOSE OF HIS OWN HOUSEHOLD.'  37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.  38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.  39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. This is not what modern day society stands for. If a person wants to grow in Christ, they must have spiritual hunger. Do you know Jesus with your heart or mind?
Is Your Spiritual Failure Due to Your Lack of Spiritual Hunger? Where does this hunger come from? Is it developed somehow? Is it something we have and then one day it blossoms? Is it inspired by something someone says? This hunger is desire, and life without desire for life is deadly.
Let’s take sports players as an example whether it be Olympians, football, basketball, baseball, hockey players, or rodeo athletes’, they all have a desire to be the best. They practice…practice…practice to hone their skills. It is this desire or hunger of excellence that drives them. It is the same with business leaders or people in business for themselves, their focus is on success. With each little bit of success the hunger grows and the individual wants more, and a vicious cycle begins. All of this is driven from within the person in hopes of the end result being happiness. This hunger for happiness and self satisfaction takes all of the individual’s energy, and many times ends with a void in their life that they are trying to fill, but don’t realize it. Their focus is so much on success they often times over look God, spouse, and family responsibilities. These examples are examples of serving self and the world, which Satan drives and loves, because if he can keep our minds occupied with self and worldly things we won’t ever develop a hunger for God. Now don’t get me wrong, there are individuals that are Christians in business that stay focused on God, and include God in their business and family, and are successful.
So you see that hunger for God starts out with a desire to foster or deepen your relationship with Jesus and then we must practice it daily. We must read, study, and practice His Word daily which will result in a hunger that will intensify with time. If we don’t read and study the Bible daily we soon lose the hunger of the Lord and will drift back into our old lifestyle. It takes diligence to withstand the wiles of the world (Satan). It’s not easy, but the rewards are great! Do you have Spiritual hunger pangs that need to be fed? Let me reassure you, that you do since you are reading this. So the question is will you allow them to increase? Maybe at one time you had a close relationship with Jesus and read and studied the Bible daily, but some life situations caused you set the Bible down and your relationship with Jesus has become distant. Is it time to rekindle that hunger and relationship? Are you hungry for God? Do you have as much of Him as you want? Are you satisfied with where you are with God? Do you want more?
These questions you must answer in the quietness of your own heart as you examine your relationship with Jesus. Those who hunger and thirst after righteousness will one day be filled; the “being filled” can only come about if we are truly empty of all self-worth and trying to please ourselves; and then realizing it! Jesus cannot fill us if we are already filled with something else.
If you want to have the satisfaction of being filled up with God, then develop your Jesus hunger now!
