Proverbs 3:25-35
25  Do not be afraid of sudden terror, Nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes;
26  For the LORD will be your confidence, And will keep your foot from being caught.
27  Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, When it is in the power of your hand to do so.
28  Do not say to your neighbor, "Go, and come back, And tomorrow I will give it," When you have it with you.
29  Do not devise evil against your neighbor, For he dwells by you for safety's sake.
30  Do not strive with a man without cause, If he has done you no harm.
31  Do not envy the oppressor, And choose none of his ways;
32  For the perverse person is an abomination to the LORD, But His secret counsel is with the upright.
33  The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, But He blesses the home of the just.
34  Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble.
35  The wise shall inherit glory, But shame shall be the legacy of fools.
Father God, it is only through the gift of Grace that we can have the endurance to remain faithful in all things in our life. We thank you for that! In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of James 5:1-12 NKJV
With this being the last chapter of the book, James gives us some more warnings and guidance on how to live a life modeled after our Saviour Jesus in verses 1-12. He concludes his writings with things we shall do not only for ourselves, but also for our brothers and sisters in Christ.
How has this Book of James affected you so far? Has it made a difference in the way you live? Are you trying to make changes in your life so that you reflect the image of Jesus to those around you? It is a tough thing to change old habit, but with the help of the Holy Spirit, constant praying, and submitting to Jesus to help you, changes are possible, for all things are possible through Jesus Christ. By submitting yourself at the foot of the Cross to Jesus and asking Him to forgive you of your bad habits victory can be had. As James has told us we have to humble ourselves and approach the Cross with an open and contrite heart because Jesus can see what lies in our hearts and He knows if you really want to submit to Him.
1  Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you!
Come now; James uses the same words in 4:13 to get the attention of his believing listeners. In other words he is saying; really; are you serious; do you know what you are saying?
You rich; James is giving a warning here to the rich, those that worship money and want more and more of it. It is that greed that they never have enough. He is not saying it is wrong to have money because we need money to survive; missions need money to function; churches need money to minister to people, etc., but it is what people do with money that can be wrong. It is the love of money that causes some to obtain it through deception and fraud. The upcoming verses tell us that and this is what James is talking about. 1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you; What this phrase is referring to is the weeping and howling these money hungry people will experience one day when they stand before God and He places judgment on them and sends them to eternal Hell. Remember the torment Lazarus the rich man was experiencing after his death? The greedy rich are laying up treasures here on earth instead of treasure for Heaven. Matthew 6:19-20 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;  20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
2  Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.
The riches of such people are viewed as corrupt and disgusting to God. They are riches obtained by immoral means and then hoarded for own personal use and gain. These riches help no one including the person hoarding the money when life is over.
Many times people work hard for the money they have and save it for later in life, but sometimes they never get to use the money due to illness or death. Their money is like a blanket is to a toddler, it gives them comfort and security, instead of relying on Jesus to provide for them. I wonder how many times it has happened where a person saved all of their life but when they left this earth their money was spent on frivolous things by the people left behind?
3  Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.
Your gold and silver are corroded; Here again let me say that having money is not wrong, it is what a person does with the money. Is it for personal gain or to benefit mankind? This is why James is saying their money was corroded because it was all being obtained by unrighteous means and then used selfishly.
And their corrosion will be a witness against you; God provides us with the money we have, but if we use it in the wrong way, one day it will be used as evidence against us.
And will eat your flesh like fire; The love of money will eat away a person’s vision to see clearly. They will be consumed, like fire consumes, with the lust of making more and more money. Just think of the story about Ebenezer Scrooge and how he was consumed with wealth and could not see past his desire to make money for himself. This is what James is talking about and warning against.
You have heaped up treasure in the last days; Those that heap up monetary treasures here on earth for themselves are heaping up wrath against themselves come judgment day. Romans 2:5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God.
4  Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.
Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; Those that cheat their employees for their gain commit more than being greedy. They sin against God by being dishonest, deceitful, not loving their neighbor, lying, etc. This phrase also tells us there is way too much heaped up at the expense of others.
And the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth; God is all knowing and nothing can be hid from Him. He hears the cries of those being treated unfairly and He will deal with these people just as they have dealt with people here on earth.
What is Sabaoth? This word appears hear and also in Romans 9:29. Sabaoth [SABB a ohth} is the Greek form of the Hebrew word, tsebaoth, meaning "armies", and is translated in the Authorized Version of the Old Testament by "Lord of hosts" or "Lord God of hosts".
5  You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter.
You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; Referring back to verse 4 and what it states, James is saying those that have wealth and sit back and live a life of doing what they want; when they want; to please their flesh while others do all the work under undesirable work conditions and also cheated out of a fair wage, will one day suffer the consequences of this lifestyle here on earth.
This lifestyle picture that James is painting for us, brings to mind the lifestyle portrayed in movies and TV shows of wealthy plantation owners where they live a life of luxury while others do all the work.
You have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter; This phrase is giving a warning to anyone living a life of pleasure and luxury at the expense of others, they are subjecting themselves to Judgment. Just as animals are confined to a feedlot and have all they require for life to grow big and fat for the slaughter, these people are the same.
6  You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you.
Some interpret this verse as to referring to Jesus being condemned and crucified with no resistance on His part. If you go back to verse one and read through verse seven you will see it is all about the wealthy and labors of the wealthy. God does not take kindly to those that take advantage of others for personal gain.
You have condemned; This most likely refers to holding back the wages due, causing a person not to be able to pay their taxes or provide for their family, resulting in being condemned to prison.
You have murdered the just; With a person in prison they may die or a family member die of starvation.
He does not resist you; “He”, meaning the laborer may not have resisted because of the power of the wealthy employer, it would have been in vain, just as it would have been in vain for our Lord Jesus Christ to resist the Pharisees.
7  Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain.
James changes the topic now to patience. Is he speaking to the laborers or brother and sister believers? Since he uses the word brethren he is addressing all believers.
Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord; The only cure for the injustices of this planet will be the second coming of our Lord. James is telling us to be patient and also to be prepared in the next phrase.
See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain; This phrase compares the life of a farmer to that of a Christian. A farmer doesn’t just plant the crop and then forget about it until harvest, he nurtures the crop by inspecting it regularly, cultivating out the unwanted vegetation, irrigating it if capable to do so, in other words being a steward of the crop. He waits patiently during the growing season in anticipation of a great harvest. We as Christians are to do the same, as we patiently wait and anticipate Jesus return to bring righteousness to earth. We are to do work for Jesus while waiting, by promoting His Kingdom and pointing souls to the Heavenly path.
8  You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.
This verse goes right along with verse seven in that we are to be ready for the coming of the Lord, not that we will be here at His second coming, but be ready if our life ends today or the Rapture happens today.
9  Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door!
Do not grumble against one another, brethren; We murmur and complain when things go wrong because we think we are being treated unfairly; or we don’t agree with a point of view or how to do something; of being neglected or taking offense to something. Some people are always grumpy and have a sour, dissatisfied, discontented temper; they see no excellence in other people; they may be displeased that others are more prospered, honored, and beloved than they are themselves; they are always complaining of what others do. It is needless to say that this spirit is the offspring of pride and will make any person lead a wretched life, which is contrary to the spirit of the Gospel.
When things go wrong, we tend to grumble against and blame others for our miseries also. Blaming others is easier than owning up to our share of the responsibility. Even Adam and Eve shifted the blame from themselves to others. Genesis 3:11-13
Lest you be condemned; We must always remember that if we unjustly condemn someone that one day we will be judged by the same standard we use. There will be no excuses and no shifting of blame to others. Matthew 7:1-5
Behold, the Judge is standing at the door; This refers to the Lord Jesus and His readiness to avenge all wrong.
10 My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience.
James is telling his brethren to exercise patience in their trials and persecutions and points them to the examples of those who had trod the same thorny path before them. The prophets generally were a persecuted race and if the prophets were persecuted and tried, they could expect the same. With the prophets suffering and patience, they are a great role model.
11 Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord—that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.
With James using the prophets as an example we are to learn and apply to our life endurance through hardship. Job never gave up and continued believing in God, that what was happening to him was God’s will and that God would see him through it. By this faith and endurance God was compassionate and merciful and blessed Job in the end many times over.
12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your "Yes" be "Yes," and your "No," "No," lest you fall into judgment.
But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; James shows that he regarded an oath/swear of any kind, a sin of a very heinous nature; one that was by all means to be avoided by those whom he addressed. The habit of swearing by various things was a very common thing among the Jews.
But let your "Yes" be "Yes," and your "No," "No," lest you fall into judgment; A person with a reputation for exaggeration or lying often can't get anyone to believe him on his word. Always be honest so that others will believe your simple yes or no. By avoiding lies, half-truths, and omissions of the truth, you will become known as a trustworthy person and avoid judgment.
Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Sinners Prayer; Pray this, and if you believe it with your heart, Jesus will save you!

“Lord Jesus I know I am a sinner.  I confess my sins to you; I am sorry for my sins; I repent (Meaning, desiring to turn from a sinful lifestyle.) of all my sins, and I am asking for your forgiveness.  I believe that only you can forgive sin.  I commit my life to you and ask you to come into my heart, direct, and take charge of my life.  I believe that you died to set me free from my sinful lifestyle and you rose from the dead to give me eternal life, and right now you are seated at the Right Hand of God Almighty. I believe you are the Son of God; the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life, and my Savior.”  I believe this and have faith you will make a new person out of me, by sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in my heart and lead me in a new life. Proverbs 3:13-24
13  Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding;
14  For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, And her gain than fine gold.
15  She is more precious than rubies, And all the things you may desire cannot compare with her.
16  Length of days is in her right hand, In her left hand riches and honor.
17  Her ways are ways of pleasantness, And all her paths are peace.
18  She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, And happy are all who retain her.
19  The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; By understanding He established the heavens;
20  By His knowledge the depths were broken up, And clouds drop down the dew.
21  My son, let them not depart from your eyes— Keep sound wisdom and discretion;
22  So they will be life to your soul And grace to your neck.
23  Then you will walk safely in your way, And your foot will not stumble.
24  When you lie down, you will not be afraid; Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet.
Father God, give us the strength by the power of your Spirit, not to commit sins of commission and sins of omission. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of James 4:9-17 NKJV
This chapter concludes with many things we fail in due to our human nature. James has touched on these, but brings them out again. Things like repenting, judging, God’s will, and arrogance.
9    Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.
This verse and verse 10 go along with verses 7 & 8 of last week which were; James 4:7-8 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.  8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Last week’s lesson was about the sin nature that is inside us and the many sinful things it causes us to do. In verses 7 & 8 James tells us to resist the devil and draw nearer to God. Repentance is the answer in drawing near to God, through the sanctification process. So how does this verse fit in? It seems out of place? Well let’s break it down and see.
Lament and mourn and weep; These three words all mean the same thing, so James is really trying to get a point across. As we have learned to recognize certain cues in the scripture that when something is of great importance it is repeated two or three times or several different examples are given. Things like: verily, verily; truly, truly; Selah in the Psalms denotes meditating on what was read; etc. In chapter three James used three analogies of how something small can do damage if not controlled, pertaining to our tongue, (a bit in a horse’s mouth, a ships rudder, and a tiny spark that can destroy a forest).
What James is referring to is the sins that he mentioned in last week’s lesson. He is calling out his listeners to repent because of their actions and the evilness of sin that lies within our spirit because of the sin nature. When a person comes to recognize their sinfulness and what they are doing on a daily basis, it should cause them to have grief and morn and weep because Jesus had to die a horrific death on the Cross for them so they can have eternal life. This is so true for a person that truly repents because they finally come to the full knowledge of what the Cross is all about and they are heartbroken. They will break down and weep for Jesus.
Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom; The laughter and joy a person has when living in the world, and then repents of their lifestyle turns to mourning and gloom because they fully understand the Gospel. They come to the realization that the life they were living was offensive to God and they were an enemy of God. This mourning and gloom soon turns to joy and celebration because they realize they have become a child of God and will one day be with their Heavenly Father.
10  Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord; Why should we humble ourselves? Can’t we live according to what feels good? You can if you don’t care about your eternal life! Many people believe there is nothing beyond this life here on earth so they live a life of grabbing all the gusto they can. But didn’t Jesus teach us something about being humble in Matthew? Matthew 23:12 And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. Being humble is part of repentance. A person can’t repent if they are proud and boastful. If they are still proud and boastful after they claim to have repented and accepted Jesus as their Saviour, then they are not saved.
Do we have to go to Jesus and ask for forgiveness? Why can’t we go to someone else like a friend, neighbor, or priest and ask for forgiveness? Let’s say we sin against another human being by being late for an appointment or not showing up for a date. We have just sinned against the other party by not keeping our promise to be there at the agreed upon time. After the agreed upon time has come and gone, do we go about our business and forget the incident, or call the other party and apologize for our action? We call the other party and humble our self and apologize, don’t we. Why not contact a friend, relative, co-worker, a passerby on the street, etc. and apologize to them for your actions? You say Bill that would be stupid because you didn’t offend them, and you are exactly right. So my point is, when we disobey God why don’t we humble our self before Jesus and apologize for our actions? It is God we sinned against; Psalms 51:4 Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight— That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge. Why do people go about their daily activities and not seek forgiveness from God our Father? Why do people go to man appointed priest or pray to an idol for forgiveness? It’s God’s law that was violated, not man’s law and we need to go to God and seek forgiveness. Luke 15:18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. As the Creator, our Father whom we have sinned against is the only one who can pardon us. It is appropriate that we should humble ourselves before him with a remorseful confession.
Matthew 6:12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. Matthew 6:14-15 "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 9:6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins"—then He said to the paralytic, "Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house." Mark 2:7 "Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?" 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
And He will lift you up; Being humble is a virtue God approves of and by being humble and repentant He will bless us with abundance of Grace. With all the things which occur on the earth, God is willing to show mercy to the humble and contrite, and to receive those who are truly penitent into his favor. What a merciful God we have!
11  Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.
Do not speak evil of one another, brethren; We don’t know who James is addressing here, but evidently some of his listeners were being busy bodies and gossipers. Here again we have that untamable tongue entering the picture. This “evil” referred to is that of talking against others - against their actions, their motives, their manner of living, their families, their appearance, etc. When we do this we are appointing ourselves as a judge!
He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother; This most probably refers to a Christian brother but also pertains to any person of the human race, man or woman.
Speaks evil of the law and judges the law; This phrase means the Laws of God, or the rules which all Christians profess to obey. It is that which James calls the “law of liberty. When we place our self as a judge, we take our self out of the position of being a child of God and move our self onto the Throne of God. When we do this we are not only judging another human being, but also judging the Law of God of loving thy neighbor, and condemning our self.
But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge; This phrase simply states we are to be obedient to God’s laws and not be a god. The simple duty of every Christian is to obey the law. We are not to assume the office of a judge to make laws, or to declare what they should have been, or to amend those that are made. We Christians and Christian denominations, need to learn to imbibe the spirit of charity. We need to examine our attitude and actions toward others. Do you build people up or tear them down? When you're ready to criticize someone, remember God's law of love and say something good instead. Saying something beneficial to others will cure you of finding fault and increase your ability to obey God's law of love.
12  There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?
There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy; James is stating that God and God alone is the one that gives life, allows life to end, and is the writer of Laws to live by. God administers his government; to restrain where it is necessary to restrain; to save where it is proper to save; to punish where it is just to punish.
Who are you to judge another; With this statement James admonishes his listeners and us by saying, “Who do you think you are?”
13  Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit";
Starting with this verse James touches on boasting or self will. James brings out another one of our human characteristic that we invariably fall victim to, and that is self sufficiency. A person that is self willed will have difficulty in humbling themselves. From time to time I myself fall victim of trying to plan or figure something out without first going to Jesus with the problem. I have experienced situations where I will struggle with a situation, but when I take it to the Lord the problem gets solved rather quickly. This is one thing I’m trying to change in my life to always include Jesus in all plans and activities I do. Where do you stand in planning your day or activities? When we are planning things we need to end our thoughts with, “Lord I pray this is your will for me, and if it isn’t, please show me what you want in my life.”
14  whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow; Referring to verse 13 and what James is expounding on, by laying out activities over a period of time, he tells his listeners and us we may not be here tomorrow. He could even be hinting at, are these things really what a person should be concerned about? Is worldly profit more important than eternal spiritual profit? It shouldn’t be because we can’t take money with us to Heaven; there is no need to; God will provide us all that we need, and that is exactly what he will do right here on earth if we will submit to Him. So when we plan something for tomorrow, next week, next year, we also need a plan B in case we aren’t here tomorrow, and that plan is giving our heart to Jesus and start living for Him here and now, so if we aren’t here tomorrow we will be with Him, which far exceeds anything here on earth.
For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away;
James poses a question here for us. What is the purpose of your life here on earth? Have you thought about this? I truly believe there is a Heaven and a Hell because the Bible states it. I believe they are also eternal because the Bible states it. We deceive ourselves into thinking that we have a lot of time remaining here on earth, but in reality life is short no matter how many years we live. I’m 64 years old and it only seems like yesterday I was a child. Loved ones have left our lives, some for 20 or 30 years, but it seems like just yesterday, so life is like a vapor or foggy morning, here today gone tomorrow. So we need to start living for Jesus today so we will be ready when our human life ends.
15  Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that."
As stated in verse 13 we need to pray for Gods will to be active and leading our life, not our own wants and desires. I feel it is safe to say that each and every one of us needs to be dependent upon God and not our self. He alone can keep us, and only He can make our plans prosperous.
16  But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.
When we boast of what we can and will do, we are placing our faith in self to get the job done. We plan for the future as if we have a crystal ball and know what the future holds. We plan without thinking about the fact that we may not be here tomorrow due to the countless casualties that could befall us and defeat our scheme.
This type of planning shows a spirit of forgetfulness that our dependence shall be on God; forgetful of the uncertainty of life; forgetful of the many ways by which the best-laid plans may be defeated. We should never boast of any wisdom or skill in regard to the future. A day, an hour may defeat our best thought out plans, and show us we don’t have the slightest power to control coming events.
17  Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
We tend to think sin is doing wrong, but James tells us that sin is also not doing right. These two kinds of sin are sometimes called sins of commission and sins of omission, both pertain to disobedience to God’s Laws. It is a sin to lie; it can also be a sin to know the truth and not tell it. It is a sin to speak evil of someone; it is also a sin to avoid that person when you know he or she needs your friendship. You should be willing to help as the Holy Spirit guides you. If God has directed you to do a kind act, to render a service, or to restore a relationship, do it. You will experience a renewed and refreshed vitality to your Christian faith.

1  My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands;
2  For length of days and long life And peace they will add to you.
3  Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart,
4  And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man.
5  Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
6  In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
7  Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and depart from evil.
8  It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones.
9  Honor the LORD with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase;
10  So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine.
11  My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor detest His correction;
12  For whom the LORD loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights.
Father God, give us the strength through the power of the Holy Spirit to say no to the lusts and desires of our flesh and the world. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of James 4:1-8 NKJV
Verses 1-6 James brings forth the ways of the world; the lusts and desires of our flesh; the mentality that we have all the answers and that we can take care of ourselves. All of this comes from the inherited sin nature and is not from God. Verses 7-10 is about being humble and prayer, submitting to God for all things and being content with what we have. Verses 11 and 12 touch on judging and the last several verses conclude this chapter on self willed or boasting.
This book of James is quite the lesson book on human nature, anyone that reads it and doesn’t have a complete understanding of what the sin nature is and where it came from, probably doesn’t understand why Jesus came and had to die on the Cross for mankind. On the other hand if a person does understand the sin nature and why Jesus died for us, but still refuses to submit to Jesus in repentance, then I don’t understand that. I guess they are like the Israelites and figure they are self sufficient when it comes to securing eternal life in Heaven by living a life of practicing heritage, customs, and manmade rules for salvation.
I was very ignorant of what the Bible teaches until I started reading it in the Fall of 2007 in a quest to understand what it was all about. I had the desire to read it since I never read it before with the frame of mind wanting to understand it and also to confirm the dogma of what the Catholic Religion taught. Little did I know that I was doing exactly what a verse in the Bible tells us to do and eventually knocked on Jesus door and it was opened to me. Luke 11:9-10  "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  10  For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. So you see I was just like the Israelites once and depended on myself and a religion for salvation, and I praise Jesus every day for opening my eyes, mind, and heart to the true path of salvation. The only thing I regret is that it took 57 years of my life to get to where I’m at today.
1  Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?
James asks a couple good questions for us to think about. The questions asked can be answered quite easily when people live for things of the world like more possessions, more money, higher status, more recognition, in other words greed drives the persons ambition. They are living to please themselves with worldly things. What about Born Again Saints? Can or do they fall victim to the desires of the world? Yes they can, but with the Holy Spirit living within them, conviction will at some point come upon them and they will realize it and change their ways.
Where do wars and fights come from among you; Quarrels and fights are always harmful to both non-believers and believers, although believers that are deeply rooted in Christ can walk away from situations and use it as a learning experience without hurt feelings, sometimes. It is our emotions in certain situations that put us in battle mode and the root cause of this is the sin nature. This is why we need Jesus to help us battle the desires of our flesh and be content with what God provides for us.
Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members; There are many desires within us and mess with our mind at times due to the sin nature. Things like money, clothes, vehicles, sex, power, appearance, hobbies, etc. When we let these things dominate our mind, the result will be finding ways to fulfill the desires of the flesh, and sin. A married person might have a member of the opposite sex show them kindness through words or some type of action and the recipient’s emotions kick in and they start toying with the attraction of that person leading to adultery. A person may have a close friend that has the capability of having some finer things in life and envy sets in resulting in an inner battle taking place and eventually the less fortunate person spends money on something they can’t afford just so they can keep up with their friend. When we don't get what we want, we fight in order to have it. Instead of aggressively grabbing what we want, we should submit ourselves to God, ask God to help us get rid of our selfish desires, and trust him to give us what we really need. As Christians we are to be content with what God provides us with. Romans 6:12-13 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.  13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
2  You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask.
You lust and do not have; To lust is to wish to have something which you do not now possess, and you have no just claim, and this prompts a person to obtain it by force. Thinking worldly, lust could be a desire of extending the boundary of a territory, fame, booty, the means of luxurious indulgence, or of magnificence and grandeur, and this leads to contest and bloodshed. These are the causes of wars on the large scale among nations and of the contentions and strife’s of individuals. The general reason is, that others have something they don’t have, and they desire to have it. They aren’t content with trying to obtain it in a peaceful and honest manner and resort to securing it by force.
You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war; In conjunction with the previous phrase people may resort to murder and covetousness to get what they want. We know this is the case with wars and what is going on in the world today in the Middle East, but individuals also act this way. Just turn on the nightly news. People are killed, banks are robbed, people are mugged all because some people are obsessed with fulfilling the desires of their flesh, of wanting something.
Yet you do not have because you do not ask; Does this mean that if we ask God for what we don’t have He will give it to us? Not at all, but what this is truly saying is, if we repent and accept Jesus as our Saviour to rule and reign in our hearts, then the material things of the world will no longer matter. Our focus will be on Jesus, striving to please Him, and our Heavenly Father. We will be content with what Jesus provides for us while we are here on earth.
3  You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.
You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss; The definition of, “amiss” is, “Wrong; faulty; out of order; improper; as, it may not be amiss to ask advice”. This phrase states it pretty plainly that many times what we ask for is not what we need or isn’t parallel with God’s will for us.
That you may spend it on your pleasures; Many times we ask for things that we want and not what we need. We do this in order to please our flesh. I think it is safe to say for the most part that many people ask God for things that will make them feel good, whereas those less fortunate ask for what they need like food, clothing, etc. There is nothing wrong with wanting a pleasurable life. God does gives us good gifts that he wants us to enjoy that are stated in; James 1:17; Ephesians 4:7; 1Timothy 4:4-5, but the short time we have here on earth is not about pleasing ourselves; it is about understanding the Cross of Christ and accepting Jesus as our Saviour so that we will have a place in Heaven for eternity. There is where the true joy will be! Amen!
4  Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
James uses some pretty strong words here in this verse. It should strike fear in an unsaved person’s heart to get right with God, and also for the saved to obey the commands of God.
Adulterers and adulteresses!; Albert Barnes has this to say about this phrase: “It is not necessary to suppose that the apostle meant that those to whom he wrote were literally guilty of the sins here referred to (meaning physical adultery); but he rather refers to those who were unfaithful to their covenant with God by neglecting their duty to him, and yielding themselves to the indulgence of their own lusts and passions (meaning spiritual adultery). The idea is, “You have in effect broken your marriage covenant with God by loving the world more than him; and, by the indulgence of your carnal inclinations.”
Spiritual adultery is saying you belong to God, but live according to worldly standards such as religious doctrine and placing your faith in rules and rituals for salvation or saying Jesus is your Saviour, but pray to other persons, places, and things.
Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?; Living according to worldly ways results in not being a child of God.
Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God; James can’t make it any clearer for us that anyone living worldly ways is a friend of the Devil and not God.
5  Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, "The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously"?
Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain; What James is alluding to here is lust, envy, and jealousy that has been the topic of this chapter so far. He’s asking his listener if they believe in OT Scripture that talks about envy, or just think it is a bunch of nonsense. His question also pertains to us today. Envy is the topic of many OT Scripture and is the root of strife. One must believe what the Bible says in totality, if not, then the person rejects God’s Word and is living according to the world. Here are some envy verses of the OT: Ecclesiastes 4:4, Job 5:2, Proverbs 14:30, Proverbs 27:4, Genesis 26:14; Genesis 30:1; Genesis 37:11; Psalm 106:16; Psalm 73:3.
"The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously"; This isn’t the Holy Spirit James is talking about, it is the spirit within us that is tainted with the sin nature. Envy is a human nature characteristic that we as humans have to deal with and learn to control, which is made easy when we become Born Again Saints and the Spirit of God takes up residence within.
6  But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: "GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE."
But He gives more grace; “He”, is referring to God and with this verse James is changing the thought pattern to show us how we can obtain grace to battle the temptations of jealousy and envy. The best solution to this human characteristic is Jesus. By repenting of the lifestyle a person is living and asking Jesus to be a part of your life, then the Holy Spirit will assist a person to overcome envy and strife. We need the Holy Spirit in this battle because we can’t do it alone.
Therefore He says: "GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE."; This phrase is telling us that a proud person is not the characteristic God likes. Jesus was a humble person and we are to walk in his likeness. The proud are those who have an excessive self-esteem; who have a high and unreasonable conceit of their own excellence or importance. This may extend to anything like; beauty, strength, attainments, family, country, rank, even religion. A person may be proud of anything that belongs to them, or in any way be construed as being a part of them. Job 22:29; Psalm 138:6; Proverbs 3:34
7  Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Through prayer in seeking the truth about the Gospel, humbling one’s self in confessing they are a sinner by nature, asking Jesus for forgiveness, yielding to His judgment in this life, and accepting Him as their Saviour to rule their life, then through this submission, the Holy Spirit will assist a person in conquering their shortcomings.
While a person yields to God in all things, they are not to yield to the devil in any. A person is to resist and oppose the devil in whatever way he may approach you, whether by allurements, by flattering promises, by the fascinations of the world, by temptation, or by threats. The Devil is a master deceiver and we as Christians have to be on our guard at all times. It is very easy to get sucked into something and not even realize it at the time, due to our human nature. A person, for example, is always safe from overindulgence if they resists all allurements to indulgence in strong drink and never yields in the slightest degree.
 8  Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
LASB: “How can you come close to God? James gives five ways: (1) Humble yourselves before God (James 4:7). Yield to his authority and will, commit your life to him and his control, and be willing to follow him. (2) Resist the devil (James 4:7). Don't allow Satan to entice and tempt you. (3) Wash your hands . . . and purify your hearts (that is, lead a pure life) (James 4:8). Be cleansed from sin, replacing your desire to sin with your desire to experience God's purity. (4) Let there be sorrow and deep grief for your sins (James 4:9). Don't be afraid to express deep heartfelt sorrow for what you have done. (5) Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor (James 4:10; 1 Peter 5:6).”

In Jesus name I pray Amen.”  (John 3:16,17; Romans 3:23; 6:23; 5:8; 10:9-13; Ephesians 2:8-10; 1 John 5:11-14; 1:6-10) (Sin: Rom. 1:22-32; Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 5:3-7)
