Psalms 78:40-57 How often they provoked Him in the wilderness, And grieved Him in the desert! Yes, again and again they tempted God, And limited the Holy One of Israel. They did not remember His power: The day when He redeemed them from the enemy, When He worked His signs in Egypt, And His wonders in the field of Zoan; Turned their rivers into blood, And their streams, that they could not drink. He sent swarms of flies among them, which devoured them, And frogs, which destroyed them. He also gave their crops to the caterpillar, And their labor to the locust. He destroyed their vines with hail, And their sycamore trees with frost. He also gave up their cattle to the hail, And their flocks to fiery lightning. He cast on them the fierceness of His anger, Wrath, indignation, and trouble, By sending angels of destruction among them. He made a path for His anger; He did not spare their soul from death, But gave their life over to the plague, And destroyed all the firstborn in Egypt, The first of their strength in the tents of Ham. But He made His own people go forth like sheep, And guided them in the wilderness like a flock; And He led them on safely, so that they did not fear; But the sea overwhelmed their enemies. And He brought them to His holy border, This mountain which His right hand had acquired. He also drove out the nations before them, Allotted them an inheritance by survey, And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents. Yet they tested and provoked the Most High God, And did not keep His testimonies, But turned back and acted unfaithfully like their fathers; They were turned aside like a deceitful bow. Father God I ask that you bless us and our loved one each day. Pour out you love and mercy and touch our hearts in such a way that we are awestruck by your magnificence. We give you all the glory and praise. Amen!
Romans 12:1-8 NKJV
Starting with chapter 12 and on through the rest of this book of Romans Paul tells us how we are to live as true believers. In Chapters 1-8 Paul taught us the doctrine of Condemnation, Justification, Sanctification, and Glorification. In chapter 7 we found out that through the physical members of our bodies sin and disobedience is carried out. In chapter 8 we learned how the Holy Spirit gives us victory over our flesh through Jesus death and resurrection. In chapters 9-11 we learned about the Covenants and now in these final chapters Paul tells us how we are to conform in life here on earth as children of God. So let’s get started.
Romans 12:1-8
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. Paul starts out with “I beseech you”. Beseech is not a command, but a pleading or a type of begging to his fellow believers. “I beseech you” in the Greek is “parakaleo,” and means “I beg of you, please.” The word “therefore,” reverts back to the contents of previous Chapters.
Why does Paul use the term beseech? Why doesn’t he just command his brethren? Moses commanded but Paul asks. The difference in the two is Grace. Paul is under grace while Moses was under law. With grace comes love for fellow brethren. Love is the result of Grace and that is why the second greatest commandment is, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.”
By the mercies of God; The word “mercies” here denotes favor shown to the undeserving, or kindness, compassion, etc. With the free gift of Grace from God comes Sanctification, Justification, and Glorification of the Believer. Because of God’s love and mercy He gave His only begotten Son as the ultimate sacrifice for us so that we can choose to receive the free gift of grace if we so desire.
That you present; denotes the action of bringing and presenting an animal or other sacrifice before an altar in OT times. It implies that the action was a free and voluntary offering. This is the same for people in NT times. We have to come to Jesus through the calling of God our Father in order to have a Spiritual Birth. We have to present ourselves as sinners and ask forgiveness and repent of our sinful ways and ask Jesus to come into our lives to rule and reign. This is how we are to present ourselves.
Your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service; Just as the animals that were brought before the OT priest as a sacrifice for sin, Paul is telling us as believers that we are to offer our whole body to God as a sacrifice to live in a Christ like manner and serve Him. If we are Born Again we will have the desire to be a servant of God and do whatever we are asked to do through the Holy Spirit. We are to give our whole body to God for Him to use as He sees fit, not what we want. If we don’t give it all to Him, we restrict the work of the Holy Spirit within us.
We are to be a holy living sacrifice so that we are acceptable to God. Just as the animals that were sacrificed were to be without blemish and spot so that God would accept them as a true sacrifice for the sins of the Israelite’s, we to  must be made holy through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the cleansing of His life giving blood. God can only accept pure and holiness because He is pure and holy, that is why the animals of OT times were to be without blemish just as Jesus is, and that is why we have to be washed in Jesus blood to become holy so that God can accept us into His kingdom. 1 Peter 1:19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. Without the covering of Jesus blood we are still viewed as sinful people by God because of the inherited sin nature from Adam. No matter how good we think we are, without a Spiritual Birth we cannot please God through our self works as an individual. If we don’t repent and die to our sinfulness we can’t live for God under Grace and serve Him as He desires. Romans 6:11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. 1 Corinthians 6:11 NLT Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
So is God asking something of us that is unreasonable? Definitely not, all we have to do is accept the truth that the Bible is telling us and Jesus as our Saviour.
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Let me put this verse another way, that is, don't live according to the behavior and customs of this world, but let God mold and shape you into a new person by changing the way you think. Our minds have to be changed. We have to study the Bible and allow the Holy Spirit to transform the way we think. By allowing God to do this within you, you will learn to know God's will for you which is good, pleasing, and perfect in His eyes. The purpose of this transformation is to bring the Saint into conformity to the “Perfect Will of God.” For this to happen we must start thinking spiritually instead of worldly. A person must make a commitment to this new life. Even though God’s gift of grace is free when one gives their heart to Jesus they must be sincere and willing to give it all to Jesus. They have to deny their flesh, mans rules and regulations, and past beliefs of salvation. For this change to happen one must be willing to give the Holy Spirit the latitude to work within them. Without this willingness the change will not happen because the Holy Spirit will never take control by force. This commitment is like a marriage vow. It will only work if one focuses on Jesus and what He did for us at Calvary. If we focus on anything other than Jesus we will be broken off of the tree of life and cast away. It is faith and not works that will keep us grafted in. Matthew 16:24-26 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.  25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.  26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?  We must furnish a willing mind and an obedient heart for the Holy Spirit to come and dwell within us for this transformation to take place. 1 Chronicles 28:9 "As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.
3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
For I say, through the grace given to me; Paul is referring to his conversion that was granted unto him by God. Ephesians 3:8 To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ.
To everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly; Paul is telling us that we are to be humble if we want to be part of God’s family. We aren’t to be boastful and prideful, but humility is the immediate effect of self surrender to God. This was the downfall of the Israelites in their know it all attitude and therefore have been broken off from the tree of life temporarily.
As God has dealt to each one a measure of faith; This phrase has two meanings. First is the measure of faith that God gives to a believing sinner through the convicting works of the Holy Spirit. Without this measure of faith a person in a sinful life style would not have the capability of believing because there is nothing spiritual in the unregenerate heart. Secondly a measure of faith is given to the New Born Saint to carry out the gift that God bestows upon them when they become a true believer.
4 For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function,
For as we have many members in one body; This is referring to the church members being of one body. Anyone that has given their heart to Jesus becomes part of the church body. Who is the head of the church? That would be Jesus Christ! Ephesians 1:22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church.
But all the members do not have the same function; When a person is a son or daughter of God each person has a particular function or service to contribute to the body of the church. These services are list in the following verses. Do you know how you are to serve God? Have you ever thought about what you are called to do for God? If you have no idea of how you are serving God, then one must ask themselves who are they serving? If one is saved they will have a desire to serve God. God sent his only Son to earth and Jesus died for us so that we would have a chance to be saved. Doesn’t verse 1 tell us to present our bodies as a living sacrifice unto God?
5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. So we, being many, are one body in Christ;  This is stating that each and every person that belongs to the church of Jesus Christ, are one. We are to be one in Christ. John 14:20 At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. Paul also states this in Corinthians that we are all of one body. 1 Corinthians 12:11-14 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.  12 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.  13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.  14 For in fact the body is not one member but many.
Individually members of one another;  This phrase is stating that whatever is true according to one, is also true according to the other. This isn’t pertaining to the services of God, but of being a member of the body. If we are one in Christ and Christ is one in us, then any person that is saved is also one. With this in mind then, we should all be of one accord pertaining to God’s Holy and True word, right? So where does that leave denominational churches?
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith;
7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching;
8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

Due to space I will start with verses 6, 7, & 8 next week and include other gifts as well.

Last Week’s Trivia: Who was Abishai?
Answer: Abishai was David’s nephew and a bold and loyal follower of David. Abishai was always in the thick of the battles against the Philistines, the Edomites, the Ammonites, and Absalom’s forces. He is given special mention in all the records and is listed as one of “The Thirty,” David’s elite corps of guardsmen/officers. 1 Samuel 26; 2 Samuel 2, 3, 10, 16, 18-21, 23; 1 Chronicals2, 11, 18, 19.

9-19-2012 Vol. 6 Part 41 Book of Romans (Romans 11:11-36)

Psalms 78:30-39 They were not deprived of their craving; But while their food was still in their mouths, The wrath of God came against them, And slew the stoutest of them, And struck down the choice men of Israel. In spite of this they still sinned, And did not believe in His wondrous works. Therefore their days He consumed in futility, And their years in fear. When He slew them, then they sought Him; And they returned and sought earnestly for God. Then they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer. Nevertheless they flattered Him with their mouth, And they lied to Him with their tongue; For their heart was not steadfast with Him, Nor were they faithful in His covenant. But He, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, And did not destroy them. Yes, many a time He turned His anger away, And did not stir up all His wrath; For He remembered that they were but flesh, A breath that passes away and does not come again. Father God I fear for your people in Israel. The unrest that is coming to a boiling point in the Middle East appears to be ready to erupt like a volcano. I know you will protect them as you always have and our prayers are with your people. We thank you for all that you do in our lives and we ask that you keep us humble as you are. We give you all the glory and praise. Amen!
Romans 11:11-36 NKJV
This week’s lesson covers a number of verses and they are all interrelated, so it is hard to do just a small section of them. Most are understandable and don’t need much explanation so I will lump verses together.
Romans 11:11-36:
11 I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles.
12 Now if their fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness!  The question is implying, “did God's people fall beyond recovery, without hope of salvation?” No, they were disobedient, so God made salvation available to the Gentiles. God wanted His own people to become jealous and claim it for themselves. Now if the Gentiles were enriched because the people of Israel turned down God's offer of salvation, think of the fullness and riches the world will share when the Jewish people finally accept Jesus as there saviour.
13 For I speak to you Gentiles; inasmuch as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry,
14 if by any means I may provoke to jealousy those who are my flesh and save some of them.  As a result of the Jewish people rejecting Jesus, the true church was started and God appointed Paul to be the one to spread the Gospel to the Gentile nations. Through this appointment Paul emphasizes his desire to provoke his kinsman to jealousy any way he can so that some will come to know Jesus as their saviour.
15 For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?  The first part of this question refers to God temporarily setting aside His people for the formation of the Church, but at some point in time the Jewish people will be resurrected with the revelation of the second come of Christ and the beginning of the Millennial reign. They will be brought back from the death of unbelief to the light of belief.
16 For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches.  First-fruits is referring to the Patriarchs of the OT, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They were holy and so are their descendants. They are the chosen people of God therefore they are holy, just as the roots of a tree would be holy, the tree as a whole would be holy.
17 And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree,  This is referring to the Jewish people being branches of an olive tree and God being the life giving root, and because of their disobedience and unbelief He has temporarily pruned them from the tree. With the formation of the true church through the apostles, any Gentile that believes (meaning a wild olive tree), is grafted on to a cultivated tree of life and fed through the life giving root system of God.
18 do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.
19 You will say then, "Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in."
20 Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear.
21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either.
22 Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.  What Paul is saying here is that we need to keep our flesh/human carnality in check. Don’t let our flesh rear up and start bragging we are better than the Israelites, because they were pruned away and we are grafted in. We don’t support the root, it is through God’s mercy that we have the possibility of being grafted in and He supports us. It was because of disobedience and unbelief on the Israelites part they were broken off and because of our faith we are grafted in. We should forever keep in mind that through our thoughts, actions, and faith in the finished work of the Cross, we will remain grafted into the tree of life, but if we lose sight of the Cross and what Jesus did for us, we will be broken off just as the Israelites.
What about the modern day Churches? How do they compare to what Paul is stating in these verses? Are they hot or cold, do they preach the Bible in its entirety or bits and piece so as not to offend?  Revelation 3:15-22 NLT "I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other!  16 But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth!  17 You say, 'I am rich. I have everything I want. I don't need a thing!' And you don't realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.  18 So I advise you to buy gold from Me—gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from Me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see.  19 I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference.  20"Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear My voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.  21 Those who are victorious will sit with Me on My throne, just as I was victorious and sat with My Father on His throne.  22 "Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what He is saying to the churches."
23 And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.
24 For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, who are natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?  These verses are referring to Israel and if they change their ways and belief, God is merciful and has the power to graft them back in to the tree of life. If God can graft in wild branches, which is not normal by nature and give them life, then He can certainly graft back in the natural branches and is eager to do so.
25 For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.  What is this mystery that Paul is referring to? It is that veil that God has temporarily place over the Israelite’s. Paul is telling the Gentiles not to get boastful and big headed because God has granted them the gift of grace and not his chosen people. This blindness of the Jews will continue until the end of the Church Age, and then at that time a revelation will start, but not become fully unveiled, until the second coming of Jesus Christ at the battle of Armageddon.
26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "THE DELIVERER WILL COME OUT OF ZION, AND HE WILL TURN AWAY UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB;
27 FOR THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM, WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS."  These verses are again stating that Israel will be saved when the Church Age ends and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ (The Deliverer) takes place. Jesus will deliver them from the Antichrist and forgive their sins.
28 Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers.  During the Church Age the Israelites are considered enemies of the Gospel of Jesus Christ due to their rejection of Jesus. This has benefited the Gentiles, but we Gentiles only rate second in comparison to Israel. Israel is God’s chosen people and beloved above all due to the love God had for Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.  God's gifts and His call can never be withdrawn. God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He will not change and His plan will be carried out no matter what we think and believe. It is all recorded in the Bible and what is going on in the world has been prophesized and is coming into effect.
30 For as you were once disobedient to God, yet have now obtained mercy through their disobedience,
31 even so these also have now been disobedient, that through the mercy shown you they also may obtain mercy.  Verse 30 speaks of we Gentiles that are Born Again who were once lost, due to disobedience, have come to know Jesus as our Saviour because God poured out his gift of grace to us. This grace was poured out to us because of Israel’s disobedience and rejection of Jesus, but one must keep in mind that this was God’s plan all along, and we didn’t become eligible for the gift of Grace because of Israel’s fall. Verse 31 is saying just the opposite of verse 30, but directed to God’s chosen people the Jews. Just as we were once disobedient and without faith, but was called and received God’s mercy, one day the Israelites will also be called and receive God’s gift of Grace.
32 For God has committed them all to disobedience, that He might have mercy on all.  The key word here is “all”. Jew and Gentile alike, at some point in time God has subject all to disobedience and unbelief. God has and is doing this in hopes of people turning from their wicked ways and accepting Jesus as their Saviour.
33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!  How great are God's riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand His decisions and His ways! As human beings we can’t even begin to try to understand the wisdom and knowledge of God. The only way of searching and finding out a fraction of what God desires from us is through the Holy Spirit and what He reveals to us.
34 "FOR WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD? OR WHO HAS BECOME HIS COUNSELOR?"  This verse is taken from Isaiah 40:13, 14. Is there anyone that knows God’s thoughts or can give Him advice? No one can! God is:
Omniscience; The quality of knowing all things at once; universal knowledge; knowledge unbounded or infinite.
Omnipotent;    Almighty; possessing unlimited power; all powerful.
Omnipresent;  Presence in every place at the same time; unbounded or universal presence; ubiquity.
35 "OR WHO HAS FIRST GIVEN TO HIM AND IT SHALL BE REPAID TO HIM?"  This verse is taken from Job 41:11. The original Hebrew says, “Who hath first given unto Me, that I should repay him?” God asks who has given to Him anything that He should be under obligation to repay someone? This is the sense in which the apostle uses the word here. Who has, by his services, laid God under obligation to recompense or pay him again? Everything in Heaven and under Heaven was created by God and belongs to God. This shows that no one can plead his own merits, or advance with a claim on God. All the favors of salvation must be bestowed by mercy and grace. God owns them all, and he has a right to bestow them when and where he pleases. The same claim to all things is repeatedly made by God in Exodus 19:5; Deuteronomy 10:14; Psalm 24:1; Psalm 50:12. What is boils down to is, what we sow is what we reap!
36 For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.  For everything comes from Him via creation and exists by His knowledge, power, and presence. Everything is intended for His glory. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever! Amen!
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ,
for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes…...
Psalms 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Last Week’s Trivia: Who was Abishag?
Answer: Abishag was a pretty girl from Shunam. Abishag was hired to nurse David in his old age. After David’s death, David’s son Adonijah wanted to marry her, but was forbidden by Solomon because of the possible threat to Solomon’s throne; 1 Kings 1,2.

9-12-2012 Vol. 6 Part 40 Book of Romans (Romans 11:1-10)

Psalms 78:17-29 But they sinned even more against Him By rebelling against the Most High in the wilderness. And they tested God in their heart By asking for the food of their fancy. Yes, they spoke against God: They said, "Can God prepare a table in the wilderness? Behold, He struck the rock, So that the waters gushed out, And the streams overflowed. Can He give bread also? Can He provide meat for His people?" Therefore the LORD heard this and was furious; So a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger also came up against Israel, Because they did not believe in God, And did not trust in His salvation. Yet He had commanded the clouds above, And opened the doors of heaven, Had rained down manna on them to eat, And given them of the bread of heaven. Men ate angels' food; He sent them food to the full. He caused an east wind to blow in the heavens; And by His power He brought in the south wind. He also rained meat on them like the dust, Feathered fowl like the sand of the seas; And He let them fall in the midst of their camp, All around their dwellings. So they ate and were well filled, For He gave them their own desire. Father, we thank you for the much needed rain. We thank you for all that you do in our lives and we ask that you keep us humble as you are. We give you all the glory and praise. Amen!
Romans 11:1-10 NKJV
With this lesson Paul continues to drive home the points of self works, unbelief, the perseverance of God’s chosen people, idolatry, and how people have to struggle through life without God’s grace. It seems that Paul has been hammering the same message over and over now for the past few chapters. Why is he doing this? Are you getting tired of the same things each week? Is he doing this because he isn’t getting the results of what he is saying to his audience? You would think by now people would get the idea and start seeking what he is saying which is Jesus and not self righteousness. What about us are we just as stubborn as the Jewish people? We are, in current times these same messages are accurate and true for today. What keeps a person from giving their heart to Jesus? Is it pride; thinking we know better than God; is it fear, if so what fear? Fear of giving up man’s rules and regulations? Fear of ridicule? Each and every person has to make a decision on who they are going to serve, God or man. If you chose to continue in the lifestyle that you are in and it is of man’s ways, then your eternal life will be spent in Hell where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth forever. If you chose to follow Jesus your eternity will be spent in Heaven where there will be eternal happiness. It is through Jesus and only Jesus that eternal happiness is possible. With each passing day we are one day closer to what is inevitable to all human beings, death. We might plan on living for another 10 to 30 years or longer, but we don’t have any say in the matter. When it is our time we are gone like a vapor. There is no second chance. There is no Purgatory mentioned in the Bible, the church formulated the doctrine of faith on Purgatory at the Councils of Florence and Trent. (This is stated in the 1994 edition of the Catechism on pages 268 & 269.) Don’t delay, give your heart to Jesus today!
Romans 11:1-10
I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. Paul throws out this question and answers it. He isn’t talking about individual salvation, but the Israelite nation as a whole. One would think God had cast them away with what had transpired in the rejection of Jesus by the Jews, but many verses in the Old Testament confirm that the Jewish people will be gathered together again and at the Second Coming of Jesus Christ they will see the truth. Isaiah 43:5-6 Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your descendants from the east, And gather you from the west;  6 I will say to the north, 'Give them up!' And to the south, 'Do not keep them back!' Paul is evidence that the Jewish nation has not been cast off, because of his genealogy. One can’t get anymore Jewish than what Paul was. Paul is one of the remnant that God preserved at that time just like all the others from the past to the present. If the Jewish nation had been cast off, then Paul wouldn’t have been saved or any other Jews then and now. The next few verses talks about this. As we studied in last week’s lesson God has His hands outstretched at all times for those who will accept Him. This is how the Jewish nation is preserved, because there is always a remnant that will reach out and take God’s hand.
2  God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying,
3  "LORD, THEY HAVE KILLED YOUR PROPHETS AND TORN DOWN YOUR ALTARS, AND I ALONE AM LEFT, AND THEY SEEK MY LIFE"? In verse 2 Paul states again that God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew; meaning foreknowledge or predestination. God chose these people because he knows they will come to accept Him. He chose these people because down through the ages they will remain faithful. Not all Jews of other nations will, but a remnant of Abraham’s descendants will and that is the remnant God is referring to.
Paul now calls upon a statement that Elijah makes when he pleads with God against Israel. Elijah is pleading against Israel when actually he should be pleading for Israel to come back to God and his ways. 1 Kings 19:10 So he said, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life."
Elijah feels all alone and he thinks he is the only faithful one left. He proclaims they have killed all the prophets and torn down God’s alters and replaced them with idols. 1 Kings 12:28-33 Therefore the king asked advice, made two calves of gold, and said to the people, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt!"  29 And he set up one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.  30 Now this thing became a sin, for the people went to worship before the one as far as Dan.  31 He made shrines on the high places, and made priests from every class of people, who were not of the sons of Levi.  32 Jeroboam ordained a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the feast that was in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. So he did at Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made. And at Bethel he installed the priests of the high places which he had made.  33 So he made offerings on the altar which he had made at Bethel on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, in the month which he had devised in his own heart. And he ordained a feast for the children of Israel, and offered sacrifices on the altar and burned incense. What is Paul trying to portray here? It is hope? Paul could relate to what Elijah said, because he also had been persecuted at times to near death. Paul is trying to reassure his audience that God has not forgotten them or anyone that will reach out and take His hand. God answers Elijah in the next verse.
But what does the divine response say to him? "I HAVE RESERVED FOR MYSELF SEVEN THOUSAND MEN WHO HAVE NOT BOWED THE KNEE TO BAAL."  God responded to Elijah’s plea to reassure him that he isn’t the only one that hasn’t bowed a knee to Baal idols. Paul uses this quote to assure his audience that there are a few that are faithful to God and have accepted Jesus as their Saviour.
5   Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace.  Verse 5 is speaking of Paul’s present time and only a few will reach out and accept the gift of grace that God has for all who come to Him. Remnant is referring to those that will be saved, or those that God foresees that will come to Him through faith in the Cross. This election of grace speaks of those who will accept the truth of the Gospel and receive the gift of grace. It doesn’t mean predestination because if it did then other verses in the Bible would be a contradiction. What I mean by this is that, “whosoever believeth in him should not perish”. If God picked and chose people then whosoever is not true. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
6   And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work. Paul is pointing out that God’s grace is a free gift from Him when one accepts Jesus as their saviour.
“And if by Grace, then it is no longer of works,” is stating how salvation is obtained which is 100% by grace. Paul is telling his listeners and us that salvation cannot be obtained through works of self or religion. Whenever we add our thoughts and actions of, “if we do this, or perform this act of religion”, then Grace is nullified. Salvation by Grace is the most simplest form of obtaining salvation, but the most difficult for we humans to grasp. As humans we think we have to do something to get something in life, but actually God’s gift of grace is free to all for the taking. It is out of love and the goodness of God’s heart that he offers this gift to all that will believe that Jesus is His Son and that He died on the cross for us and rose on the third day and is presently seated at the right hand of God.
Otherwise grace is no longer grace; This phrase is the ending of the previous phrase, in that when works enters into the picture of obtaining salvation, then the gift of grace is nullified. Denominations keep trying to add things in quest of salvation, when all that is required, is faith in the Cross of Christ. When Jesus died on the cross he said it was finish and that is what He meant. Believe in Him and the sacrificed He bore for us and do not add anything else. John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; this phrase is re-emphasizing the first sentence in this verse. A person cannot work their way to Heaven. What I mean by this is that one can do all kinds of good deeds thinking God will reward them and look favorably on them for their deeds like taking meals to those that have been sick or had an operation, or lost a loved one, or give money to all kinds of charities, help out at the church at every function, giving a ride to someone without transportation, etc., the list is endless. Now don’t get me wrong all these things are good and good to do, but they will not earn the gift of grace and a place in Heaven. There is only one thing that you must do to get the free gift of grace and that is to believe in Jesus and the finished work of the Cross. Not only do we as people try to devise things to earn our way to Heaven, but many churches also do this through their doctrine. Now here again don’t take me the wrong way, but many churches believe baptism and communion wash away sin which they don’t. The Bible doesn’t teach this. The only thing that washes away sin is the shed blood of our Lord Jesus Christ through a Spiritual Birth. Is baptism and communion good to practice? Yes if done in the right context according to scripture. Paul’s words scream out at us, and they are plain and simple, they are to be taken in the most serious manner. The moment that one inserts anything into the Finished Work of Christ other than Faith, then the Grace of God is nullified, and the individual is not Saved.
Otherwise work is no longer work; Paul isn’t say that works is no good. As stated above works must be done with the correct motive. That motive being, wanting to helping others from the kindness of one’s heart without thinking one will get something in return from God. God doesn’t operate that way, his gift of grace is a free gift we don’t have to earn it. Mark 12:31 And the second, like it, is this: 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is no other commandment greater than these."
7  What then? Israel has not obtained what it seeks; but the elect have obtained it, and the rest were blinded. This verse is simply stating that the majority of the Israel nation did not and has not received what they are seeking, but a few did figure out the gift of grace by faith and they were saved, while the rest have been blinded and their hearts hardened. This is so very true in current times also. John 12:40 "HE HAS BLINDED THEIR EYES AND HARDENED THEIR HEARTS, LEST THEY SHOULD SEE WITH THEIR EYES, LEST THEY SHOULD UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEARTS AND TURN, SO THAT I SHOULD HEAL THEM."
8   Just as it is written: "GOD HAS GIVEN THEM A SPIRIT OF STUPOR, EYES THAT THEY SHOULD NOT SEE AND EARS THAT THEY SHOULD NOT HEAR, TO THIS VERY DAY."  This verse is taken from Isaiah 29:10. These other verses also talk about hard hearts and deaf ears Deuteronomy 29:4; Isaiah 6:9-10. What it states is exactly what God did and has done to the Israelites because of their failure to believe in God. God has given them exactly what they wanted, freedom to exercise their own desires and interpretation of scripture. They had their religion and that is all they wanted or would believe. No outsider in their point of view was going to change their mind. They were so stubborn they would go to the grave believing in their religion, and many have, resulting in eternal darkness. This also holds true for today. Many will die before they will even listen to the truth that is in the Bible and believe in the finished work of Christ. How about you, what do you put your faith in?
And David says: "LET THEIR TABLE BECOME A SNARE AND A TRAP, A STUMBLING BLOCK AND A RECOMPENSE TO THEM. This verse is taken from Psalms 69:23 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see; And make their loins shake continually. LET THEIR TABLE BECOME A SNARE AND A TRAP; this is referring to Israel’s prosperity. All the good that God said he would and did for them, if they would obey and keep His commands. There is a list of these things in Deuteronomy 28:1-14. The rest of the chapter also tells what God would do if they disobeyed Him. So how did this good fortune become a snare, trap, and stumbling block? Well, our human nature always gets in the way by puffing us up. Good things, times, money, things people say, all tend to go to our heads and if we experience many good things we soon think we are invincible and maybe even brag about ourselves. This is what happened to the Israelite’s. They prospered in so many things they felt that they couldn’t fail in anything they did. As a result they strayed from the truth and put their faith in their own works and righteousness. Here again this is so very true today. Just because good things are happening to one self, doesn’t mean that they are in God’s grace, because God allows the sun and rain to fall on good and bad people. Matthew 5:45 ……for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
10 LET THEIR EYES BE DARKENED, SO THAT THEY DO NOT SEE, AND BOW DOWN THEIR BACK ALWAYS." God put a veil over their eyes so they could not see the truth and allowed them to be put into captivity as punishment of disobedience.
