Psalms 149:1-9 Praise the LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song, And His praise in the assembly of saints. Let Israel rejoice in their Maker; Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. Let them praise His name with the dance; Let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp. For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the humble with salvation. Let the saints be joyful in glory; Let them sing aloud on their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, And a two-edged sword in their hand, To execute vengeance on the nations, And punishments on the peoples; To bind their kings with chains, And their nobles with fetters of iron; To execute on them the written judgment— This honor have all His saints. Praise the LORD!
Father God, magnify the power of the Holy Spirit within us to crush temptation when it arises in our life. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of James 1:9-18 NKJV
This lesson we will be covering four characters that a Christian believer should display as a Christian. They are Humility, Endurance, Temptation, and God’s Goodness. The first three are things that all Christians struggle with on a daily basis. That Old Serpent planted so many desires in our DNA that constantly tugs at us in an attempt to pull us away from God our Father through our flesh. Our flesh, and I mean every human being born on earth, except Jesus, was and is tainted by the Devil when he persuaded Eve to eat of the fruit and then she convinced Adam to eat the forbidden fruit too. This is why Paul made this statement in Romans; Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.  Have you ever wondered what would have happened if Adam wouldn’t have eaten the fruit? Hmmmm, that is something to ponder. Send me your thoughts on this.
I think endurance and temptation is something believers deal with each day. When I was first saved the first couple years I didn’t understand what seasoned believers were talking about when they would say, “they struggle with sin on a daily basis” meaning temptation and endurance. I have come to understand this through the sanctification process as I grow in our Lord. The more I study God’s Word the more I understand the life I lived before Spiritual Birth had me separated from God; any Born Again Christian can claim this. OK, enough said let’s get started.
9    Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation,
Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation; This phrase is referring to one in humble circumstances; one of lowly rank or employment; one in a condition of dependence or poverty. A person that is Born Again, glories in the salvation of the Lord. They are happy and content because they know what their eternity holds for them. They may not have a penny to their name, but they know one day they will be with the Lord and never have a need of anything again.
Christianity brings a new dignity to the poor and not-so-influential people of this world. That dignity is most apparent in the true church where there is no society class distinctions, or there shouldn’t be any, if there is then it isn’t a true church. All believers share the distinction and dignity of being changed by the gospel and being charged with the mission of taking that same Good News to the rest of the world. Believers know they have dignity before God because Christ died for them.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, is a great example of this truth. The dignity that she displayed when she realized what God had done for her is seen in her prayer of praise, (Luke 1:46-55). Whatever our social or economic situation, James challenges us to see beyond it to our eternal reward. What we can have in Jesus Christ outweighs anything in this life. Knowing him gives us our high position, where we find our true dignity. Our earthly goal is, or should be, to live a Christlike life to reap the reward of Heaven.
10  but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away.
But the rich in his humiliation; What this means is that some point in time a rich person will be disgraced when he stands before Jesus. All of his earthly riches, prominence, and dignity will not be present for him to show Jesus his accomplishments. He will stand before the Lord empty handed with his head hung low, all of a sudden realizing what life on earth is all about. It isn’t about what we can do for mankind, but for God.
Because as a flower of the field he will pass away; All the worldly possessions will be left behind when we die just as a flower in its season passes away. A flower will look beautiful for a few days and then withers away and its beauty is only remembered in our minds or from a picture. We find true wealth by developing our spiritual life, not by developing our worldly assets.
11  For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.
For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes; This verse illustrates the concept of life, human life, plant life, animal life, any life. We are only here for a brief time and then gone. We might be remembered for a generation, but with time we fade away, unless we have done something like walking on the moon, which was grand at the time, but now the younger generation just reads the event as a history lesson without experiencing the excitement of the moment. So what I getting at is this, we need to examine our life, our spiritual life and focus on Jesus and what He did for us and not on our earthly wants and desires. We need to make a choice; eternal bliss over earthly bliss and quit flowing to and fro like a wave.
So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits; It doesn’t matter how rich a person is, it is all temporal. If wealth, power, and status mean nothing to God, why do we attribute so much importance to them and so much honor to those who possess them? Do your material possessions give you goals and your only reason for living? If they were gone, what would be left? What you have in your heart, not your bank account, matters to God and endures for eternity.
These verses bring to mind the rich man and poor beggar. The rich man was in his glory on earth which didn’t last long compared to eternity, and because of his lifestyle of idolizing riches, he will spend his eternity in Hell. The beggar had a very hard and painful life here on earth which was only temporary, but now resides in Heaven for eternity. I chose the latter and place my faith in the Cross of Christ. How about YOU?
Luke 16:19-25  "There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.  20 But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate,  21 desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.  22 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.  23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.  24 "Then he cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.'  25  But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.
12  Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
Blessed is the man who endures temptation; Temptation is what we are plagued with due to the sin nature. Will we ever defeat it? No, but as long as we keep our faith in Jesus and live for Him, we will have victory. As this phrase states, if we can endure the day to day temptations and not cave into our worldly desires, we will have victory. Always keep in mind that the Apostle Paul also struggled with temptation. Romans 7:15-19 For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.  16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good.  17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.  18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.  19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice.
For when he has been approved, He will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him; If we run a good race we will delight our Lord and meet his approval. John 14:15  "If you love Me, keep My commandments. Romans 6:14  For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
The crown of life is like being in the winner’s circle of the Kentucky Derby. The victory wreath is given to winning jockey and horse. God's crown of life is not glory and honor here on earth but the reward of eternal life, living with God forever. The way to be in God's winners' circle is by staying faithful, even under the pressure of temptation. As Christians we must run the race of life for nonperishable rewards. 1 Corinthians 9:25 And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.
13  Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.
Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; We have all heard people say that God is tempting them, but in reality God tempts no one. It is our sinful flesh that causes us to be tempted. God allows things to happen in our life for us to learn and to strengthen our faith.
For God cannot be tempted by evil; God can’t be tempted because there is nothing in Him that would cause any type of temptation to come forth. God is Holy! 1) There is no evil passion to be gratified, as there is in men; 2) There is no want of power, He is all powerful; 3) There is no want of wealth, for He has infinite resources, and all that there is, belong to Him; 4) There is no want of happiness, that He should seek happiness in sources which are not now in His possession. Nothing, therefore, could be presented to the divine mind as an inducement to do evil. God’s omnipotent Holy Will fully resists any direction toward sin.
Nor does He Himself tempt anyone; As stated previously, God doesn’t tempt anyone, but allows things to happen in our life to wake us up; as a calling to Him to become one of His children; to have a closer relationship with Him; to cleanse us in the sanctification process; etc. It is our flesh that induces us to sin.
14  But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.
People who live for God often wonder why they still have temptations. Does God tempt them? No, God allows things to happen to test us, but he does not tempt us by trying to seduce us to sin. God allows Satan to tempt people, in order to refine our faith and to help us grow in our dependence on Christ. It is the moral defect in our DNA that leads to sin, but we can resist the temptation to sin by turning to God for strength and choosing to obey his Word.
15  Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
Temptation comes from evil desires inside us, not from God. It begins with an evil thought and becomes sin when we dwell on the thought and allow it to become an action. Like a snowball rolling downhill, sin grows more destructive the more we let it have its way. The best time to stop a temptation is before it is too strong or moving too fast to control. See Matthew 4:1-11; 1 Corinthians 10:13; and 2 Timothy 2:22 for more about escaping temptation.
The danger of sin is this: When we sin the first time and disregard our convictions of wrong, each time the conviction becomes less until there is no conviction anymore. This then is God turning His back on the individual with no convictions, and the result brings forth death, meaning Hell.
It is easy to blame others and make excuses for evil thoughts and wrong actions. We use excuses such as: It's the other person's fault; I couldn't help it; everybody's doing it; it was just a mistake; nobody's perfect; the devil made me do it; I was pressured into it; I didn't know it was wrong; God is tempting me; etc. A person who makes excuses is trying to shift the blame from himself or herself to something or someone else. A Christian, on the other hand, accepts responsibility for his or her wrongs, confesses them, and asks God for forgiveness. As stated, temptations do not come from God, but from the appetites of man’s sinful nature, which is a result of the fall of Adam and Eve; the sin nature can be held at bay, and is meant to be held at bay by the believer anchoring his faith in the Cross of Christ, which will then give the Holy Spirit leeway to help us.
16  Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.
The word brethren here is referring to believers and James is telling them not to be deceived in thinking that God is the author of sin, and that the evils in the world are to be linked to Him. One of the most powerful tactics of Satan is deception to get believers to believe wrong or to blame what happens to us on God.
17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above; There is nothing bad that comes from Heaven. Whatever the will of God is, and is directed to us, is for our good. The most perfect gift that the Father has ever sent to us is His Son Jesus Christ, and for us to accept Him, is left up to us.
And comes down from the Father of lights; Our Father in Heaven is light and provides the light in Heaven. He will supply the light in the New Jerusalem also. Throughout the Bible light is good and darkness is evil.
With whom there is no variation or shadow of turning; This phrase is stating that God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, He will never change, only we change due to our desires.
18  Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.
Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth; It is by the Words of God that the universe was created and it is by the Words of God that we were conceived and brought forth in life.
That we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures; We are God’s firstfruits because He holds us more dear to Himself than all other creation. Why, because we are made in His likeness, therefore He sent His only begotten Son to redeem us of our fallen sin nature out of love.
Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Sinners Prayer; Pray this, and if you believe it with your heart, Jesus will save you!

“Lord Jesus I know I am a sinner.  I confess my sins to you; I am sorry for my sins; I repent (Meaning, desiring to turn from a sinful lifestyle.) of all my sins, and I am asking for your forgiveness.  I believe that only you can forgive sin.  I commit my life to you and ask you to come into my heart, direct, and take charge of my life.  I believe that you died to set me free from my sinful lifestyle and you rose from the dead to give me eternal life, and right now you are seated at the Right Hand of God Almighty. I believe you are the Son of God; the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life, and my Savior.”  I believe this and have faith you will make a new person out of me, by sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in my heart and lead me in a new life. Psalms 148:1-14 Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; Praise Him in the heights! Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts! Praise Him, sun and moon; Praise Him, all you stars of light! Praise Him, you heavens of heavens, And you waters above the heavens! Let them praise the name of the LORD, For He commanded and they were created. He also established them forever and ever; He made a decree which shall not pass away. Praise the LORD from the earth, You great sea creatures and all the depths; Fire and hail, snow and clouds; Stormy wind, fulfilling His word; Mountains and all hills; Fruitful trees and all cedars; Beasts and all cattle; Creeping things and flying fowl; Kings of the earth and all peoples; Princes and all judges of the earth; Both young men and maidens; Old men and children. Let them praise the name of the LORD, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heaven. And He has exalted the horn of His people, The praise of all His saints— Of the children of Israel, A people near to Him. Praise the LORD!
Father God, give us wisdom to fully understand faith and to apply it to our daily lives. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of James 1:1-8 NKJV
This lesson is about faith and having victory if we have proper faith. These eight verses have a lot of meat in them and should cause a person to really look at their lifestyle. We can have victory though our faith if it is focused in the death and resurrection of Jesus and not religion. Without proper faith in the Cross, we are like leaves on a windy fall day being blown in many directions.
1  James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad: Greetings.
James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ; James introduces himself as a bondservant of God and Jesus. Why doesn’t he introduce himself as a brother of Jesus and an apostle? Could it be that he was a humble person? Maybe he didn’t want to draw attention to himself as being a brother of Jesus; maybe he didn’t want the fact that he was Jesus brother to earn him special favors. I believe, as stated in previous lessons when the Spirit of God lives within one, the virtue of humility and meekness blossoms out of love. If James would have introduced himself like, “James, brother of the Lord Jesus Christ and one of His Apostles”, could be interpreted as someone that was bragging about himself, that he was superior to the other Apostles, and had a higher rank, not only in the Apostles, but also in society. This would go completely against the teachings of Jesus because it would display a character of being prideful, which is sinful.
It is because of being a servant of God and of Jesus that James introduces himself this way. It is the love of God within his spirit that brings forth an introduction of this nature. He was more proud to be a servant of God than being a brother of Jesus. Being accepted into Gods family through repentance changes one’s life. Anyone that is Born Again changes their views on life, all of a sudden serving God and focusing on the reward of Heaven takes precedence in a person’s life; they finally realize why they are here on earth for a short time. In most of the introductions of the books of the Bible, the author introduces themselves as a bondservant to our Lord Jesus Christ.
To be a bondservant, is to be a slave to God in spreading the Gospel; to do God’s will; to put one’s life last; to reject worldly ways; reject mans ways, doctrine, and desires of the flesh, etc. Just think of a slave’s life, they didn’t have a life of their own. All they did was serve the master and make sure the master was happy. Their life was nothing and meant nothing. This is what being a bondservant means; the Apostles and disciples of God live to please God through obedience and spreading the Gospel.
To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad: Greetings; With this phrase we do know that the twelve tribes were still in existence, how long after the writing of this book I don’t know. With the persecution of Steven and all the pressure coming down on the believers, the Jewish believers started to scatter from Jerusalem. James wrote this book in the A.D. forties time frame and in 70 A.D. the temple was destroyed, so we know there was great unrest for believers and also the Jewish people by the Roman regime. So just from this verse we learn that this book is written by James to the Born Again Jew and Gentile people of all nations including current day Born Again individuals. So we need to listen carefully to what James has to say about how we are to live if we claim to be true Christians and not give the Word of God lip service.
2  My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,
Verses 2, 3, & 4 teaches about victory.
My brethren; James isn’t speaking of his Jewish brethren, but his Christians brethren, anyone that is a true believer.
Count it all joy; If you read all three verses you will understand what James is referring to here, “count it all joy” is that we shouldn’t regard trails and temptations as a punishment, a curse, or a calamity, but as a chastisement, learning experience, something to actually rejoice in being a child of God. A true Christian will regard it a great privilege to be persecuted and to suffer trials and tribulations, not things to mourned over, but as chief blessings of life. Matthew 5:12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
When you fall into various trials; The word trials here does not mean tempted but it refers to the various kinds of trials which a believer might experience, like sickness, poverty, bereavement, persecution, etc. They were to count it a matter of joy that their faith was subjected to anything that tried it. These types of trials cannot be said to be direct inducements or allurements to sin, but they try a believers faith, and show whether he is of a mind to adhere to his faith in God, or whether he will apostatize. If a person isn’t persecuted because of their faith like the Prophets, Apostles and Jesus, then one has to ask themselves, what is my faith in, Jesus or self?
3  knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.
James doesn't say “if” trials come your way, but when it does (in previous verse). We will have trials and that it is possible to profit from them. The point is not to pretend to be happy when we face pain but to have a positive outlook ("consider it an opportunity for great joy") because of what troubles can produce in our life. James tells us to turn our hardships into times of learning. Tough times can teach us perseverance/patience. Other passages dealing with patience, also called perseverance and steadfastness, see Romans 2:7; Romans 5:3-5; Romans 8:24-25; 2 Corinthians 6:3-7; 2 Peter 1:2-9. If we have genuine faith we will have patience.
4  But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
But let patience have its perfect work; Patience in a Born Again believer is something that has to be produced by the power of the Holy Spirit residing within through the Sanctification process. If we submit and allow the Holy Spirit the latitude to work within us, then the virtue of patience will be perfected. We aren’t to obstruct the influence on the soul by murmurings, complaining, or rebellion. We can't really know the depth of our character until we see how we react under pressure. It is easy to be kind to others when everything is going well, but can we still be kind when others are treating us unfairly?
That you may be perfect and complete; The meaning of this is explained in the following phrase - “wanting nothing;” that is, that there may be nothing lacking to complete your character. There may be the elements of a good character; there may be sound principles, but those principles may not be executed during trials of your life. Can you think of times when you haven’t exhibited a Christlike character during tough times? Afflictions, more than anything else, will do this and we should allow them to do all that they are tailored to do in developing what is good in us. The idea is, that it is desirable not only to have the elements or principles of godliness in our soul, but to have them carried out. God wants to make us mature and complete, not to keep us from all pain. Instead of complaining about our struggles, we should see them as opportunities for growth.
Lacking nothing; This is referring to our faith being in the proper object, and that being the Cross of Christ, then as a child of God we lack nothing in times of trials and tribulations. We need to thank God for promising to be with us in rough times. Ask him to help us solve our problems or to give us the strength to endure them. Then we need to be patient. God will not leave us alone with our problems; he will stay close and help us grow.
5  If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
Verses 5-8 deals with faith.
If any of you lack wisdom; This phrase refers to the kind of wisdom needed when dealing with trials, since the previous verses are dealing with trials and tribulations of a Christian. A Christian needs Heavenly wisdom to bear the burden, the perplexities, disappointments, and bereavements that come upon them. The particular kind of wisdom which we need in trials is to enable us to understand their design and tendency; to perform our duty under them, or the new duties which may grow out of them; to learn the lessons which God designs to teach, for he always designs to teach us some valuable lessons by affliction, and to cultivate such views and feelings as are appropriate under the strange forms of trials brought upon us. This helps us to discover our shortcomings and learn how we may avoid them in the future.
Let him ask of God; We don’t need to be afraid to ask for the specific wisdom we need; the wisdom necessary for the situations we bear to learn from them. It is appropriate to bring the burden before God; to bring up the specific need; to ask God to guide us in the matter where we feel so much embarrassment. It is one of the privileges of Christians, that we may go to God and ask him for that general wisdom we need from Him in life whenever an emergency arises, or a case of perplexity and difficulty in regard to duty. We can bring that particular thing before his throne, with the assurance that he will guide us. Psalm 25:9; Isaiah 37:14; Joel 2:17.
Who gives to all liberally; In the Scriptures, the promise of divine aid is always limited to the desire. No blessing is promised to man that has not sought; no man can feel that he has a right to hope for the favor of God, who does not value it enough to pray for it; no one should expect to obtain it, who does not prize it enough to ask for it. God will give to us liberally if we come to Him with a sincere heart. Matthew 7:7-8 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
Without reproach; God is all merciful and when we come to Him for wisdom or anything, He does not chide, rebuke, criticize, treat harshly, coldly reject us, but listens to our needs with an open non-partial mind. He is unlike our fellow human beings that turn their backs, put their nose in the air, hold a grudge, etc. He hears our request and knows what is best for us and what we need and not what we want. So when we ask a favor of God, we can be assured we will never be reproached in an unfeeling manner, or meet with a harsh response.
It will be given to him; This promise in regard to the wisdom that may be necessary for us, is absolute; and we can be sure that if it is asked in a proper manner it will be granted us. Many times we may ask for things other than wisdom and not receive them because they are not in our best interest to have them, but wisdom if asked properly, is totally different.
6  But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.
But let him ask in faith, with no doubting; Faith is the key word here in this verse. Faith is the criteria for all things pertaining to the Kingdom of God. Without proper faith in the Cross of Christ, we are lost now and for eternity. When we ask for something we must ask with our heart; we must seek wisdom when asking for needs to evaluate whether what we are asking for is something of a Godly nature or a fleshly worldly nature. I fall short in evaluating my request to God, how about you?
For he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind;
A person with divided loyalty is not completely convinced that God's way is best. He treats God's Word like any human advice and retains the option to disobey. He wavers between allegiance to subjective feelings, the world's ideas or God's commands. If your faith is new, weak, or struggling, remember that you can trust God. Then be loyal by committing yourself wholeheartedly to God.
7  For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;
This verse points to a particular type of individual, one who has a “doubting heart.” Any person can hope for favor from God, only as he puts faith in Him. God sees the heart; and if He sees that there is no belief in His existence, or His perfections; no real trust in Him; no reliance on His promises of wisdom and grace, it is not His will that He should grant an answer to a petition. That will account sufficiently for the fact that there are so many prayers unanswered; that we so frequently go to the throne of grace, and are sent away empty. A man that goes to God in such a state of mind should not expect to receive any favor. Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
8  he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
This verse is telling us that we must place our faith in Jesus and move forward without looking back. Believe in His Word, the Bible, and not mans various doctrines.
If you have ever seen the constant rolling of huge waves at sea, you know how restless they are; subject to many forces like wind, gravity, and tide causing them to go in many directions. A person of divided loyalty (God or mans doctrine) leaves a person as unsettled as the restless waves. If you want to stop being tossed about, rely on God to show you what is best for you. Ask him for wisdom, and trust that he will give it to you.

In Jesus name I pray Amen.”  (John 3:16,17; Romans 3:23; 6:23; 5:8; 10:9-13; Ephesians 2:8-10; 1 John 5:11-14; 1:6-10) (Sin: Rom. 1:22-32; Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 5:3-7)

Psalms 147:11-20 The LORD takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His mercy. Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion! For He has strengthened the bars of your gates; He has blessed your children within you. He makes peace in your borders, And fills you with the finest wheat. He sends out His command to the earth; His word runs very swiftly. He gives snow like wool; He scatters the frost like ashes; He casts out His hail like morsels; Who can stand before His cold? He sends out His word and melts them; He causes His wind to blow, and the waters flow. He declares His word to Jacob, His statutes and His judgments to Israel. He has not dealt thus with any nation; And as for His judgments, they have not known them. Praise the LORD!
Father God, open our minds to the writings of James your Apostle. Help us to understand what he is telling us and help us to apply what he is telling us to our daily life. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of James Introduction NKJV
I have chosen the Book of James to study next. This book has a great many things that apply to our daily living that we as Christians need to live by. The following is taken from the KJV Life in the Spirit Study Bible that gives us some good information about James and his writings.

Author: James Half Brother of Jesus
Theme: Faith That Works
Date of Writing: A.D. 45-49
Background:
James is classified as a "general epistle" because it was originally addressed to a wider audience than a local church. The salutation, "to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad" (James 1:1 James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad: Greetings.), along with other references (James 2:19; 21), indicate that the letter was written initially to Jewish Christians living outside The Holy Land. It is possible that the recipients of the letter were among the first converts in Jerusalem who, after Stephen's martyrdom, were scattered by persecution (Acts 8:1-2 Now Saul was consenting to his death. At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.  2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.) as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, Antioch and beyond (Acts 11:19 Now those who were scattered after the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to no one but the Jews only.). This would explain:
1.) The letter's opening emphasis on joyfully enduring trials that test faith and require perseverance (James 1:2-12),
2.) James's personal knowledge of the "scattered" believers, and
3.) The authoritative tone of the letter.
As leader of the Jerusalem church, James was writing to his scattered sheep.
The author's prominence is indicated by the way he identifies himself simply as "James" (James 1:1). James, the half-brother of Jesus and the leader of the Jerusalem church, is generally regarded as the author. His speech at the Jerusalem council (Acts 15:13-21) as well as descriptions of him elsewhere in the NT (e.g., Acts 12:17; 21:18; 1 Corinthians 15:7; Galatians 1:19; 2:9, 12) correspond perfectly with what is known about the author of this letter. James most likely wrote his letter during the 40s. This early date for writing is indicated by several factors, such as the fact that James uses the Greek word “synagogue” to refer to the Christians' place of meeting (James 2:2). According to the Jewish historian Josephus, James, the Lord's brother, was martyred at Jerusalem in A.D. 62.
Purpose:
James wrote:
1.) To encourage Jewish believers who were suffering various trials that were testing their faith,
2.) To correct erroneous ideas about the nature of saving faith, and
3.) To exhort and instruct the readers about the practical out workings of their faith in righteous living and good deeds.
Examination:
This letter covers a wide variety of topics related to living a genuine Christian life. James urges believers to:
1.)   Endure their trials joyfully and benefit from them (James 1:2-11).
2.)   Resist temptations (James 1:12-18).
3.)   Be doers of the Word, not just hearers (James 1:19-27).
4.)   Demonstrate an active faith, not an empty profession (James 2:14-26).
He solemnly warns about:
1.)   The sinfulness of an unruly tongue (James 3:1-12; 4:11-12).
2.)   Worldly wisdom (James 3:13-16).
3.)   Sinful behavior (James 4:1-10).
4.)   Presumptuous living (James 4:13-17).
5.)   Self-centered wealth (James 5:1-6).
6.)   James concludes with an emphasis on patience, prayer and reclaiming the wandering (James 5:7-20).
Throughout its five chapters, the relationship between true faith and godly living is emphasized. Genuine faith:
1.)    Is a tested faith (James 1:2-16).
2.)    Is an active faith (James 1:19-27).
3.)    Loves one's neighbor as oneself (James 2:1-13).
4.)    Manifests itself in good works (James 2:14-26).
5.)    Keeps a tight rein on the tongue (James 3:1-12).
6.)    Seeks God's wisdom (James 3:13-18).
7.)    Submits to God as the righteous judge (James 4:1-12).
8.)    Trusts God in daily living (James 4:13-17).
9.)    Is not self-centered or self-indulgent (James 5:1-6).
10.)  Is patient in suffering (James 5:7-12).
11.)  Is diligent in prayer (James 5:13-20).
Special Features:
Seven major features characterize this letter.
1.) It is most likely the first book written in the NT.
2.) Although it contains only two references to Christ by name, there are more reminiscences of Jesus' teaching in this letter, including at least 15 allusions to the Sermon on the Mount, than in all the other NT letters combined.
3.) More than half of its 108 verses are imperatives or commands.
4.) In many ways it is the Proverbs of the NT, for:
a) It is full of godly wisdom and practical instructions for living a genuine Christian life, and
b) It is written in terse style, with crisp commands and vivid analogies.
5.) James is an astute observer of the operations of nature and of fallen human nature. He often draws lessons from the former to expose the latter (e.g., James 3:1-12).
6.) It emphasizes more than any other NT book the necessary relation between faith and works (esp. James 2:14-26).
7.) James is sometimes called the Amos of the NT, because he vigorously addresses issues of social injustice and inequality.
We will start out next week with Chapter One.

visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
