Psalms 94:14-23 For the LORD will not cast off His people, Nor will He forsake His inheritance. But judgment will return to righteousness, And all the upright in heart will follow it. Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity? Unless the LORD had been my help, My soul would soon have settled in silence. If I say, "My foot slips," Your mercy, O LORD, will hold me up. In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul. Shall the throne of iniquity, which devises evil by law, Have fellowship with You? They gather together against the life of the righteous, And condemn innocent blood. But the LORD has been my defense, And my God the rock of my refuge. He has brought on them their own iniquity, And shall cut them off in their own wickedness; The LORD our God shall cut them off.
Father God we thank you for giving your Son Jesus to die for us. We celebrate His resurrection this weekend and give Him all the Glory for defeating Satan for us. Something we cannot do on our own. In Jesus name I pray. Amen!
Revelation 3:7-13 NKJV
This week’s lesson is on the church of Philadelphia. Philadelphia means, “Brotherly Love”, a city of Lydia in Asia Minor, about 25 miles south-east of Sardis. Philadelphia was founded by the citizens of Pergamum. It was one of the “seven churches”. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 17 A.D. when Tiberius reigned and almost several times thereafter. It came into the possession of the Turks in 1392 A.D. Philadelphia and Smyrna, are the only two churches that received unadulterated praise from Jesus. To Smyrna the promise is, "the synagogue of Satan" should not prevail against her faithful ones; to Philadelphia, she should even win over some of "the synagogue of Satan," meaning a missionary church. This church represents a Missionary era in the Church Age timeline, which began around the late 1700 – 1800’s.
The community was built in a frontier area as a gateway to the central plateau of Asia Minor. It stood upon a terrace 650 ft. above the sea, and to one side of the city were volcanic cliffs to which the Turks have given the name of Devitt, or “inkwells”; on the other side of the city the land is exceedingly fertile.  Philadelphia's residents kept barbarians out of the region and brought in Greek culture and language. As in most Asia Minor cities, many Jews lived there, and they possessed a synagogue.
It had many names and Philadelphia was given in honor of Attalus II, because of his loyalty to his elder brother, Eumenes II, king of Lydia. Still another name of the city was Decapolis, because it was considered as one of the ten cities of the plain. A third name which it bore during the 1st century. AD was Neo-kaisaria; it appeared upon the coins during that period. During the reign of Vespasian, it was called Flavia. Its modern name, Ala-shehir, is considered by some to be a altered form of the Turkish words Allah-shehir, “the city of God,” but more likely it is a name given from the reddish color of the soil. In addition to all of these names it sometimes bore the title of “Little Athens” because of the magnificence of the temples and other public buildings which adorned it.
7    "And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, 'These things says He who is holy, He who is true, "HE WHO HAS THE KEY OF DAVID, HE WHO OPENS AND NO ONE SHUTS, AND SHUTS AND NO ONE OPENS":
He who is holy, He who is true; “He”, of course is referring to Jesus and He is holy. He is declared holy even before he was conceived. Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. There is no other that has walked this earth that was, is, or will be more Holy or True. He is righteous and white as new fallen snow. His character is God, and He is a separate person. Anyone believing there has been anyone else that has walked this earth that is holy and true and without sin is believing in manmade doctrine. Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
HE WHO HAS THE KEY OF DAVID, HE WHO OPENS AND NO ONE SHUTS, AND SHUTS AND NO ONE OPENS; This phrase of this verse is taken from Isaiah 22:22 The key of the house of David I will lay on his shoulder; So he shall open, and no one shall shut; And he shall shut, and no one shall open. Jesus has the key and is the authority over all things, including Satan. Jesus bruised the head of Satan at the Cross. Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel." God has given this authority to His Son Jesus and it is Jesus we will stand in front of come judgment day. He opens and closes all doors in our life and it all balances on keeping our faith fixed on the Cross of Christ.
Of the house which David built for his royal residence; that is, of the palace. This house was on Mount Zion; and to have the key of that house was to have the chief authority at court, or to be prime minister. To be put in possession of that key, therefore, was the mark of office, or was a sign that he was entrusted with the chief authority in the government. (Barnes)
8    "I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name.
I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; The Church of Philadelphia was doing many things for Jesus and all for the right reasons. They were works out of love for Jesus and not works that a person would do thinking they were suppose to or that they would gain merit with God. Because they were doing these things from the heart Jesus is telling them that He has set an open door in front of them and no one can close it not even Satan. What are these works? They are works to promote the Gospel; to bring people to Christ. Paul talks about these open doors that were open to him. Colossians 4:3 meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains. Act 14:27; 1 Corinthians 16:9; 2Corinthians 2:12
There is a lesson to be learned here that we can apply to our present day lives. As human beings many times we get ideas of doing something for God and we lower our shoulder and blast our way right through the door and then find out we have really messed things up or think we had the wrong message. Chances are the message was correct, but as a human being we take the matter into our own hands instead of patiently waiting and praying for God to open the door in His time frame.
For instance two or three years ago I had a message to start a church in Streator based on the book of Acts. I expressed this thought with other close Christians, but just blew the thought away. This thought has kept coming to the fore front of my mind from time to time, but my thinking was no way I could do this, what did I know about starting a church. Well since the beginning of the year some doors have been opened for, and to me, and this thought is coming to birth, so it seems. Not that I’m doing this, but I’m helping two brothers in Christ with this and very much involved. Presently I’m taking one day at a time and listening intently to the Holy Spirit for guidance, because I want this to be for God’s Kingdom and not my pride. Jesus is opening these doors, but if I’d have blast forward the first time I was given this thought it would have failed. We have to be in prayer and wait on God. It is His timeline not ours. So my advice is prayer when thoughts of such come out of nowhere, wait on the Lord, and submit your all to Jesus. I accept all prayers for this to succeed!
For you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name; This phrase could mean individual strength or little strength in numbers. We have no strength on our own to overcome the wiles of this life to do the works of Jesus. So what this represents, is when one is Born Again we gain great strength, spiritual strength when the Holy Spirit takes up residence within our heart. 1 Corinthians 3:16  Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? It is with this strength we are able to do the works mention at the beginning of this verse. Without this strength we would not even think about doing God’s works, but the Holy Spirit gives us the strength we need to carry out His will. Without this spiritual strength we cannot function in a Christ like manner. 2 Corinthians 12:9 And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
The rest of this verse is what greatly pleases God Almighty. When we keep his word and not deny His name, He magnifies His strength within us, and He opens doors for His children. This church was functioning according to God’s word and being directed by the Holy Spirit and Jesus was well please with these actions. This also holds true in our life. If we believe all the Bible teaches, stay true to Jesus Holy Words, stand up and not deny His name, and place our faith exclusively in what and why Jesus died on the Cross, then He will bless us and open doors.
9    Indeed I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie—indeed I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you.
Indeed I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie; Jesus makes mention here again, of the Jews that proclaim to be God’s children because they are a Jew and they practice their customs and religion, but in reality belong to Satan. Many living today make this same claim that they are God’s children because they grew up in a Christian home and belong to a specific religious denomination. Whether Jew or modern day Gentile, if ones faith is in their heritage and religion, they are not one of God’s children based on Bible facts. These Jews and modern day Christians are liars and deceive themselves. 1 John 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
Indeed I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you; This phrase is referring to the Kingdom Age which is right after the second coming of Christ, Armageddon. All of the Born Again Saints will rule and reign with Jesus Christ over the entirety of the Earth. With Israel restored they will then bow at the feet of Christ, whom the Gentiles accepted.
10  Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.
This verse is a very controversial verse pertaining to the Rapture. Jesus is telling the church, meaning God’s children by Spiritual Birth, will be spared from the hour of tribulation that will take place here on earth in the near future. I believe we will see some of these tribulations before the Rapture happens, but not to the extent that will happen during the seven years. Statistics show there is an increase in earthquakes, tsunamis, drought, floods, severe storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. compared to 50 years ago, not to mention the world governmental turmoil and economical situations. Base on what Jesus states in this verse, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world,” I believe the Rapture will happen at the beginning of the seven year tribulation. The key words here are, “I will keep you”. The church is the bride of Jesus; the church is part of Jesus body (Romans 12:5  so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.); He is the head of the church (Ephesians 5:23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.); we are one in Christ when we become a true believer (1 Corinthians 12:27  Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.); if you believe this then why would one think Jesus would allow us to suffer any part of the tribulation. Another verse in the OT also refers to God’s righteous people being removed to avoid tribulation here on earth. Isaiah 57:1 The righteous perishes, And no man takes it to heart; Merciful men are taken away, While no one considers That the righteous is taken away from evil. If Jesus allowed his body, bride, church to be subjected to the trials during the Tribulation, then wouldn’t He also endure the suffering? Jesus will remove His people from this earth so they will not have to endure the trials that will be placed on unbelievers. He will protect us like He protected Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from the flames of the fiery furnace. Didn’t Jesus also protect Daniel in the lion’s den? Then why would one not believe that Jesus won’t protect His people from the Tribulation? There are many other times listed in the Bible where Jesus protected His faithful servants and the Rapture will be another.
Another reason why I believe in Pre-Tribulation Rapture is because as we go through the rest of this book, the Church is not mentioned in Chapter 4–19 which describes what will take place during the Tribulation.
11  Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown.
I am coming quickly refers to the Rapture and as believers we must cling tight to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We must place our faith in the Cross of Christ. If we don’t stay focused someone will come along and seduce us into believing in something other than the works of the Cross and steal our crown. When one has a Spiritual Birth they receive a crown from God.
12  He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name.
What a magnificent statement Jesus says here. As someone that becomes a Born Again Christian and can keep their faith focused on Jesus, they will be rewarded greatly. They will be a pillar in God’s kingdom, meaning they will never have to leave. They will be stamped with a new name of Jesus Father, the New Jerusalem, and Jesus name. They will be sealed with Holiness. It will be paradise for eternity with our Creator.
13  "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."
As a person, take heed and be ready, fore you know not the hour! If you’re a pastor of a Philadelphia church, watch closely and keep the foxes out of the hen house. Be on guard and listen to what the faithful ones around you are saying. Submit your life to the leading of the Holy Spirit and listen intently for His voice. All things are possible with God!

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ,
for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes…...
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Psalms 94:1-13 O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongs— O God, to whom vengeance belongs, shine forth! Rise up, O Judge of the earth; Render punishment to the proud. LORD, how long will the wicked, How long will the wicked triumph? They utter speech, and speak insolent things; All the workers of iniquity boast in themselves. They break in pieces Your people, O LORD, And afflict Your heritage. They slay the widow and the stranger, And murder the fatherless. Yet they say, "The LORD does not see, Nor does the God of Jacob understand." Understand, you senseless among the people; And you fools, when will you be wise? He who planted the ear, shall He not hear? He who formed the eye, shall He not see? He who instructs the nations, shall He not correct, He who teaches man knowledge? The LORD knows the thoughts of man, That they are futile. Blessed is the man whom You instruct, O LORD, And teach out of Your law, That You may give him rest from the days of adversity, Until the pit is dug for the wicked. Father God give us strength to hold fast to you each day, purify our minds so our hearts will know the truth, and Holy Spirit convict us of our wrong doing.  In Jesus name I pray. Amen!
Revelation 3:1-6 NKJV
This week’s lesson is about the church of Sardis. This city was a wealthy city and appeared great on the outside, but was spirituality suffering. As you will see when we get started in the verses, Jesus doesn’t give any praise to this church.
Sardis actually occupied two different locations. There was an old section and new section of the city. The older section of the city was on a mountain, and when its population outgrew the spot, a newer section was built in the valley below. Sardis was the capital of Lydia, one of the provinces of Asia Minor, located some 30 miles south of Thyatira, in the area now known as Western Turkey. It was taken by Cyrus (548 B.C.), when Croesus was king, and was at that time one of the most splendid and wealthy cities of the East. It passed into the hands of the Romans as time went by, and rapidly declined in wealth and importance.
This church at Sardis that Jesus is speaking to came into being around 1500 and is referred to as the Reformation Church. In last week’s study we learned the involvement of the Roman government with the church and the influences it was having on the church. With the Roman government meddling with church business, a slow apostatizing of the Roman Catholic Church came into being from 500 A.D. through the next 1,000 years. During this time period the word of God was fading in the church because of the Roman government’s involvement and a political system came into place, which tried to dominate nations. The action of trying to dominate nations actually threw the world into the Dark Ages. Thousands were murdered during this time, tortured to death in every way possible, because they wouldn’t swear allegiance to the Pope, or to the Church, etc. During this period, as stated, the Church ceased to be a light, thereby struggling to become a dictatorial authority, which authority was exercised by the sword. Note: As you all know America was discovered in 1492 and following years Christians fled to America in order to practice freedom of Religion.
Martin Luther came along and gradually established what we know as the Protestant Church because of the Roman government’s involvement and the apostasy of Gods Holy and True Word. This movement also divided the Roman Catholic Church from Roman government to where the Church didn’t rule nations anymore as it once did. So the Sardis church represents this time period and continues somewhat to current times.
Martin Luther declared his intolerance for the Roman Church’s corruption on Halloween in 1517, by nailing his 95 Theses of Contention to the Wittenberg Church door. Luther, who would be exiled in the months following the Diet of Worms Council in 1521 that was designed to martyr him, would translate the New Testament into German for the first time from the 1516 Greek-Latin New Testament of Erasmus, and publish it in September of 1522. Luther also published a German Pentateuch in 1523, and another edition of the German New Testament in 1529. In the 1530’s he would go on to publish the entire Bible in German. It is of my opinion one of the contributing factors to the Reformation was the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg. He invented the printing press with replaceable/movable wooden or metal letters in 1436 and completed by 1440. It was with this technology Bibles were printed and placed in the hands of many to read and then the truth was revealed. People could see the apostasy the Roman Government was causing so there was a breaking away from the State Church and new denominations were started.
I don’t know if this makes any sense to you or not, but it does to me. Looking at the dates of events listed above, I can see how all churches have evolved to today and ultimately it is all because of the inherited sin nature. Satan was and is busy working from the inside to destroy anything of God. People of this time period aren’t any different than the people of today. We can get led astray so easily when we don’t know what the Bible teaches and that’s what was happening during the Sardis era because they didn’t have a copy of God’s Word. They were listening to man and not God. Colossians 2:8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.
When things are bad and we don’t know what to do or where to turn, then we seek God for help, otherwise we go on day to day not including God in every aspect of our life. When things are good we are happy go lucky and don’t think about God because we fool ourselves into thinking we have it all under control. We don’t even give God thanks for the good things that are happening in our day to day lives. As human beings our minds wander away from God just like it did with the Israelites wandering in the wilderness. Then when things aren’t going so well we start murmuring, and when things continue to go south and get bad enough then we seek God again. What a wonderful loving compassionate God we have. I can’t praise Him enough for being the most forgiving and loving Father, especially when we apostatize Him time after time, but when we come to our senses and repent of our wrong doing, He is always there for us, forgives us, and loves us with unconditional love.
One thing to keep in mind and search your heart is the messages Jesus is giving to these seven churches. First, is your church holy and true to the Word of God? Second, are you holy and true to the Word of God? These messages are for present day churches and us as individuals to open our ears, listen to what is being said, examine the church one attends, examine one’s life, and if we aren’t living by God’s prescribed order, then repent, meaning turning from how we are living and start living for God. Revelation 18:3-4 For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury."  4 And I heard another voice from heaven saying, "Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues.
1  "And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, 'These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: "I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.
And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, 'These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars; The "seven Spirits of God" is another name for the Holy Spirit. Seven signifies completeness and Jesus is completeness. When Jesus walked this earth He yielded completely to the Spirit of God. There never has nor will be another human capable of yielding to God our Father like Jesus did. Jesus is the Son of God, the Spirit is the Spirit of God, and all three are of the same mind and Spirit, but all separate individuals with a common purpose. They are the Trinity! The seven stars are the messengers, or pastors of the churches.
I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Some refer to Sardis as, “prince of joy”, but in reality it was spiritually dead. Sardis was infested with sin, but had a reputation for being active. Their works looked good to man because they were works of man to please man. Sardis was like a book cover that gives the appearance of something very good and appetizing, but what was inside was despicable in God’s eyes. There is no compliment or building up of this church by Jesus, He cuts right to the heart of the matter.
2  Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God.
Be watchful; Jesus is telling this church to wake up and be watchful. The shepherd of this church has fallen asleep and he is to wake up from his stupor and evaluate what is happening. Get God’s Word out and do an audit of the church functions and purpose, the people in the flock, and of himself. As a pastor one is to be on the lookout at all times for heresies, heretics, and hypocrites within the church body. Ezekiel 33:2-6 "Son of man, speak to the children of your people, and say to them: 'When I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from their territory and make him their watchman,  3 when he sees the sword coming upon the land, if he blows the trumpet and warns the people,  4 then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be on his own head.  5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, but did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But he who takes warning will save his life.  6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand.' As a pastor or teacher, Jesus will judge these individuals on a much higher level than others because they have a responsibility to preach and teach the truth. James 3:1 My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.
And strengthen the things which remain; Jesus is telling this pastor to strengthen what was remaining. Even though Jesus called Sardis a dead church, he also affirmed there were a handful of people who were faithful believers. The pastor was to separate himself from all unbiblical doctrine and shepherd the faithful. In other words refocus on the finished works of the Cross and not on self or worldly things.
That are ready to die; What Jesus is saying here goes right along with the previous phrase. There were some people still being faithful and some things still being done correctly, but without a shepherd they would soon die. They would be led astray by ravenous wolves in sheep’s clothing.
For I have not found your works perfect before God; Jesus is stating their works was base on dead faith. In other words what was being done was because they thought they were suppose to do these things to earn merit with God instead of doing them out of love for God. Their faith was in doing things to work their way to Heaven instead of faith in what Jesus did on the Cross for salvation. Things like doing good deeds, working at church functions with the idea this is what I’m supposed to do to please God, giving money to charities and missionaries because I’m supposed to, etc. Don’t get me wrong, all these things are good, but the issue being is what motivates us to do them. Is it out of love for God or to stay in God’s good grace? That is the question one must answer.
3  Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.
Remember therefore how you have received and heard; This phrase is referring to the first love this pastor and church had at one time. It also applies to us as individuals. When a person accepts Jesus as their Saviour, and how they were change from the inside out, the zeal they had for Jesus their new found love, and the desire to do all they could for God’s Kingdom.
Hold fast and repent; Jesus is telling the churches and us to go back in time and examine our present life to our new found love at conversion and repent of the things you are doing wrong, and grab a hold of that new found love you had at conversion; belief with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength; do good works; be ever faithful; hold fast to the Cross of Christ.
Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you; If the churches and individuals do not heed this warning of Jesus, He will come when we least expect it an snuff out our life, resulting in eternal Hell.
4  You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy.
Jesus is telling the churches of Sardis nature, that they have a few individuals within their congregation that are living according to God’s Word. They have identified the false doctrine, they don’t accept or meddle in it, they believe and live by God’s Holy and True Word, because they know they are cover by the shed blood of Jesus Christ. They keep their eye fixed on the Cross of Christ. Those that identify and reject the unscriptural doctrine and ways of modern day churches, will walk with Jesus clothed in white. There is always a few of God’s children around even though we might think we are the only ones. 1 Kings 19:18 Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him."
5  He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.
Jesus is telling us, those who have a Spiritual Birth are victors of his own sins; over the world and its temptations; over common error; over the ills and trials of life, which shows that his Christian principles are firm and unshaken. Life, and the Christian life especially, may be regarded as a warfare. Thousands fall in the conflict with evil; but they who maintain a steady warfare, and who achieve a victory, shall be received as conquerors in the end. So overcoming isn’t a onetime thing at conversion, but one must hold fast till physical death, or the Rapture. If we stay faithful to Jesus and be ever mindful of why and what He did on the Cross for us, then we will be clothed in white garments, He will not blot our name from the Book of Life, He will confess who we are and what we have done for the Kingdom to Almighty God and His angels.
What Jesus is telling us with this phrase, “I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life“, is that if one is saved and decides to go back to his old sinful lifestyle then his salvation will be lost. It is true that God will never remove one of His children because of sin, but it is our lack of faith that will cause Him to blot out our name. It was by faith we became a child of God, and this faith we must hold fast to. Hebrews 10:26-29 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,  27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.  28 Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.  29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? John 8:31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.
6  "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."
Salvation is all about faith and righteousness in other words stay faithful to the finished works of the Cross not religion. If you find yourself in a dead church, make sure you preserve your own faithfulness, ask God to intervene, ask God to help you find other believers, and pray together for an awakening of your church.

Psalms 92:1-15 A Song for the Sabbath Day. It is good to give thanks to the LORD, And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, And Your faithfulness every night, On an instrument of ten strings, On the lute, And on the harp, With harmonious sound. For You, LORD, have made me glad through Your work; I will triumph in the works of Your hands. O LORD, how great are Your works! Your thoughts are very deep. A senseless man does not know, Nor does a fool understand this. When the wicked spring up like grass, And when all the workers of iniquity flourish, It is that they may be destroyed forever. But You, LORD, are on high forevermore. For behold, Your enemies, O LORD, For behold, Your enemies shall perish; All the workers of iniquity shall be scattered. But my horn You have exalted like a wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil. My eye also has seen my desire on my enemies; My ears hear my desire on the wicked Who rise up against me. The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those who are planted in the house of the LORD Shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bear fruit in old age; They shall be fresh and flourishing, To declare that the LORD is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
Father God I give you all the praise and glory. Jesus I thank you for taking on human form and dying on the cross for us, which enables each of us the opportunity to accept you as our Saviour. I ask that you draw all to you that read these messages.  In Jesus name I pray. Amen!
Revelation 2:18-29 NKJV
I would like to point out something I have discovered in the study of these churches. Some of these churches did not exist when John had this revelation and recorded the book of Revelation. Some of these churches came into existence and faded away in the era of 100-600 A.D. while others still live today.  What is interesting in studying these churches, and then going to history books of the time periods mentioned you can pick out some of the facts mentioned by John’s writings. Secular and church/religious history both refer to the same leaders (government and church) but each with a little different twist. Depending on where ones faith is, meaning in self/man or Jesus Christ, you can see the evolution of the present day churches. We saw in last week’s lesson the relationship Constantine and Sylvester the First had and how much influence the Roman Government had with the church leader at that time. It wasn’t just Constantine’s era, but before and after his ruler-ship the Roman government was involved.
The persecutions the true believers were enduring, was because of the false doctrine nonbelievers were trying to introduce. Look at the Pharisees and their unbelief even with Jesus walking among them. They didn’t want to give up their customs, their priest, their animal sacrifices to atone for sins, and many other rituals. This mentality just didn’t go away after Jesus death and resurrection but continued throughout the life of the Apostles and from then to this hour. It was the same way for the Gentile non-believers; they didn’t want to give up their idolatry and sexual promiscuity. We have studied the Book of Romans and what Paul preached to his fellow Jewish brethren about their customs and beliefs, but at times the results were near death experiences for Paul, because of self proclaiming religious people. Both the Jewish and Gentile people caused true believers of this era, to suffered very difficult times. Even today, people don’t want to accept what the Bible teaches; they want to put their faith in their own conjured up thoughts, man thoughts, priest, religion, pastors, etc.
Are you starting to understand a little of the evolution of religion? It was and is man’s self righteous reasoning before Jesus and after Jesus that has brought about what many believe in, and all this is due to the inherited sin nature, Satan. To bring a bit of this evolution into perspective, let’s use the Papacy as an example and see what the Bible tells us about Church hierarchy, since we know many modern day denominations evolved from Catholicism. Let’s look at the Book of Acts, which is the most complete history of the Early Church, we do not find any suggestion of such a person as a Pope, or such a position. Only gradually did the concept of an organized Church govern, directed, and regulated by a hierarchy of Pope, Bishops, and Priests—evolve. The gospel of Luke and several epistles teach against this concept; Luke 22:24-26 Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest.  25 And He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called 'benefactors.'  26 But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. Ephesians 1:22-23 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church,  23 Which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. Colossians 1:17-20 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.  18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.  19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell,  20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.
It was Cyprian of Carthage, who died about 258 A.D. who introduced the concepts that brought about revolutionary changes within the Church. Cyprian demanded obedience from the whole Church to the Bishop of Rome, which “he” claimed “he” derived his authority directly from God. In the years following, this concept gradually evolved into existence with many denominations, which is unbiblical.
During the years A.D. 390—461, Leo I, Bishop of Rome, used all his considerable powers to establish recognition for the Bishop of Rome as “the universal Bishop.” (It was he who first made the claim that Peter had been the first Pope, some 400 years after the Apostles lived.) It was Leo I, who laid claim to universal authority over the Church.
The eastern branch of the Church emphatically denied these claims. Even the Council of Chalcedon (where Leo exercised great power) refused his request to certify his claims. Leo’s claim was enforced through the power of the Roman Emperor, but even then it received only marginal acceptance within the Church. His assertions of papal supremacy did, however, produce a profound effect in later years. It was not until about 600 A.D. that the title of “Pope” (universal Bishop) was given to the Bishop of Rome. In respect to this, we must understand that Jesus did not appoint Peter to the headship of the Apostles and, in fact, expressly forbade such notion as documented by the Bible, God’s Holy and True Word. Jesus is the head of the true church, Born Again Saints, those that have had a Spiritual Birth. If Jesus wanted hierarchy in church structure, He would have had Peter wash his feet and then the other Apostles wash Peter’s feet, and Paul wash Peter’s feet too, but Jesus says we are to be humble and be servants not rulers.
So in the study of these churches Jesus is giving us multiple messages; one being a book of prophecy He is warning future churches to be watchman of the gospel; second for established churches to identify false teachings and doctrine and rebuke, educate, and if that doesn’t work, evict those that are spreading heresies; third for us on a personal level we are to examine our beliefs and if it isn’t Scriptural, meaning what the Bible teaches, then we are to be overcomer’s and place our faith in Jesus and what He did on the Cross so that we can receive a white stone with a name on it.
With this new knowledge here is a timeline:
CHURCH
TIME ERA
Ephesus
Represents the Apostolic time period,
which closed out around 100 A.D.
Smyrna
Refers to the Martyr Church, its time
span was approximately 100 – 300 A.D.
Pergamos
Referred to as the State Church, its time
span was approximately 300 – 500 A.D.
Thyatira
Referred to as the Papal Church,
which began about 500 A.D. to present.
Sardis
Referred to as the Reformation Church,
which began about 1500 A.D. to present.
Philadelphia
Referred to as the Missionary Church,
and it began around the year 1800, to present.
Laodicea
Referred to as the Apostate Church; don’t
know when it began, but it has, it is the
last Church addressed by Jesus, meaning
the Rapture will take place in the near future.
This week’s lesson is about the church of Thyatira. The city was basically secular, with no focus on any particular religion. It was a working people’s community and had commerce in wool, linen, apparel, dyed stuffs, leatherwork, tanning, and excellent bronze work. Alexander the Great founded this Macedonian colony after the overthrow of the Persian Empire. Thyatira was situated between Pergamos and Sardis, a little off the main road that connected these two cities. Lydia that is mentioned in Acts 16:14, was from a Jewish settlement in Thyatira and was among the first to be converted at Philippi by Paul. Acts 16:14 Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul.
18  "And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write, 'These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass:
These things says the Son of God; This is the first and only time an introduction to a church is stated with such clarity, “the Son of God”. The other six churches an attribute of Jesus is used in the introduction, but not this one. With this type of introduction there is no mistake or chance to misinterpret who or where this command or rebuke is coming from. This church was indulging in many misinterpreted doctrine.
Who has eyes like a flame of fire; We discussed Jesus eyes in chapter one, they are eyes that can see deep within a person and know the innermost secrets of ones being.
His feet like fine brass; The Greek word used here is chalkolibanon meaning white brass. It only occurs in the New Testament in Revelation 1:15 and here in verse 18. The metal referred to was undoubtedly a species of brass distinguished for its clearness or whiteness meaning purity and righteousness. With these attributes, judgment was being placed on this church.
19  "I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first.
Rephrasing this verse, Jesus is acknowledging that He knows all the things they do. He has seen their love, their faith, their service, and their patient endurance. And that He can see their constant improvement in all these things.
20  Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.
Jezebel has stamped her name on history as the representative of all that is wicked, crafty, malicious, revengeful, and cruel. She is the first great instigator of persecution against the saints of God. Guided by no principle, restrained by no fear of either God or man, passionate in her attachment to her heathen worship, she spared no pains to maintain idolatry around her in all its splendor. She was the Wife of Ahab, king of Israel. (883 B.C.) She was a Phoenician princess, daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Zidonians. In her hands, her husband became a mere puppet. 1Kings_21:25. God’s prophets were attacked by her orders, and put to the sword. 1Kings_18:13; 2Ki_9:7. There were some in this church claiming to be Christians but practicing and promoting the doctrine of Jezebel, in other words committing spiritual adultery. Worse yet the pastor of this church was allowing this to happen. Do you or your church practice idolatry and immorality since this church is still present?
21  And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent.
22  Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.
Jesus is stating that He has given this church time to repent and so far hasn’t. He is stating plainly that He will cast the leaders of this church into a sickbed and all those that are following this doctrine into great tribulation if they don’t repent of their deeds and false doctrine. They need to get their eyes focused on the finished work of Jesus on the Cross and off of their salvation by their own works.
23  I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works.
I will kill her children with death; This speaks of spiritual death, Hell!
The churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works; Jesus is stating His omniscience and that He is capable of knowing what lies in our hearts and minds and if it is anything other than Him and Him alone, He will place judgment on each one according to their works. One will receive the degree of punishment based on their works. He’s not just speaking to this church but to all churches.
24  "Now to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine, who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say, I will put on you no other burden. 25 But hold fast what you have till I come.
Now to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira; I take this phrase as meaning that Jesus is speaking to the pastor and the congregation of the church. He is addressing all, but this verse is directed for all to hear it.
The rest of verse 24 including verse 25 Jesus is commending those that have not indulged nor placed any faith in what was being introduced by Jezebel. He will place no burden upon them, but they must remain faithful till the end meaning the Rapture.
26  And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations—
And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end; Anyone that comes to realize with their heart what Jesus did on the Cross for them, and accepts Him as their Saviour, overcomes the teaching and believing of doctrine that is not scriptural. With this comes repentance meaning the rejecting and not practicing unscriptural doctrine and turns exclusively to Jesus and places their faith in Jesus for all things. They turn from their own works of salvation to the finished works of the Cross.
To him I will give power over the nations; When one overcomes and remains faithful they will be given power to assist Jesus during the Kingdom Age in the ruling over the nations.
27  'HE SHALL RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON; THEY SHALL BE DASHED TO PIECES LIKE THE POTTER'S VESSELS'— as I also have received from My Father;
HE SHALL RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON; THEY SHALL BE DASHED TO PIECES LIKE THE POTTER'S VESSELS; This is taken from Psalm 2:9. Rule with a rod of iron means Jesus will be the judge and there will be no gray areas. It will be black and white, no bartering, physcology, placing blame on childhood, or any other excuse used today in our court systems. Jesus will see into the hearts and minds and justice will be served.
As I also have received from My Father; This phrase goes along with verse 26. Leave out the Psalm and you will see what I mean. Just as God has given the power to Jesus, He will give the same power to overcomer’s. I don’t know what type of system will be in place during the Kingdom Age, but Raptured Saints will be ruling with Jesus during this era, after all when one becomes a Saint they are heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus. Everything Jesus has we will share in. We studied this in Romans 8:16-17 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,  17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
28  and I will give him the morning star.
Christ is also called the morning star in Revelation 22:16 "I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star." A morning star appears just before dawn, when the night is coldest and darkest. When the world is at its bleakest point, Christ will burst onto the scene, exposing evil with his light of truth and bringing his promised reward. As individuals this is the way it is when one comes to recognize and understand the message of the Cross. A person is changed from the inside out and a new bright and shining life dawns. Praise God! Praise God! Praise God!
29  "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."
Jesus ends all of these messages with, "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." This is a very important message for all to hear. Probably 99% of the people that read these phrases don’t think it applies to them, just to the churches, but it does apply to them and all need to take heed of what is being said. If one is practicing doctrine that is not found in the Bible then they are only fooling themselves and making themselves out to be liars in God’s eyes. 1 John 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. These people are committing Spiritual Adultery. They are calling themselves Christians, but practicing doctrine of Jezebel.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Last Week’s Trivia: Who was Ahilud?
Answer: Ahilud was the father of two prominent civil servants. One son, Jehoshaphat, was a keeper of records under David and Solomon; another son, Baana, was one of Solomon’s commissary officers, responsible for providing food for the palace for one month each year. 2 Samuel 8:16; 20:24; 1Kings 4:3; and Chapter 12; 1 Chronicles 18:15.
