Proverbs 12:9-18
9  Better is the one who is slighted but has a servant, Than he who honors himself but lacks bread.
10  A righteous man regards the life of his animal, But the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.
11  He who tills his land will be satisfied with bread, But he who follows frivolity is devoid of understanding.
12  The wicked covet the catch of evil men, But the root of the righteous yields fruit.
13  The wicked is ensnared by the transgression of his lips, But the righteous will come through trouble.
14  A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth, And the recompense of a man's hands will be rendered to him.
15  The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise.
16  A fool's wrath is known at once, But a prudent man covers shame.
17  He who speaks truth declares righteousness, But a false witness, deceit.
18  There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, But the tongue of the wise promotes health.
Father God, give us the words to speak as Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman, to bring our loved ones home to you. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Gospel of John 4:1-12 NKJV
This week the lesson starts out with Jesus knowing that the Pharisees anger was rising and it is time to leave the area. In His journey to Galilee Jesus engages in a conversation with a Samaritan woman that was seeking something other than physical life.
1  Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John
Therefore, when the Lord knew; Some say that Jesus knew this figure of the number being baptized by someone coming and telling Him. Jesus is all knowing and therefore by His omniscience He knew how many had been baptized, he didn’t need to have someone counting and reporting the figure to Him.
That the Pharisees had heard; The term Pharisees here refers to members of the Sanhedrin or those in authority. They claimed the authority to regulate the rites and ceremonies of religion, and therefore they believed they had a right to inquire into the conduct of both John and Jesus. If you remember chapter 1 verse 25 the Pharisees sent someone to inquire of John, and who gave him the authority to introduce baptism into the religion of the Jewish people.
That Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John; This phrase should have been worded that Jesus disciples baptized more that John, because as we will see in the next verse that Jesus didn’t baptize any, it was the disciples doing the baptizing. If you will note not just baptizing was taking place but disciples were being made also. The Holy Spirit was touching the hearts of men and they followed Jesus in such a manner they would be going out and spreading the Gospel.
2  (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples),
Jesus performed no Baptisms Himself. His Disciples attended to that duty. The baptism by Jesus disciples was the same as that of John, a “Baptism of Repentance” which greatly authenticated John’s Ministry, and, as well, this new rite of Water Baptism.
3  He left Judea and departed again to Galilee.
Already opposition was rising against Jesus, from the Pharisees. They resented Jesus' popularity as well as his message, which challenged much of their teachings. Because Jesus was just beginning his ministry, it wasn't the time to confront these leaders openly; so he left Jerusalem and traveled north to Galilee where there was much less control by the Pharisees.
4  But He needed to go through Samaria.
The Israel of Jesus’ day was somewhat divided into some five sections. Judaea, which included Jerusalem, was at the southern extremity. Samaria bordered Judaea on the north and Galilee on the south. In other words, Samaria was in between these two areas. Northeast of Galilee was Paneas, which bordered Decapolis to its south, the area of the ten cities. Both of these, Paneas and Decapolis, were east of the Jordan River.
Another district called “Perea,” was east of the Jordan, and extended up into the Decapolis area, also bordering parts of Judaea and Samaria on the west. It also extended south to approximately midpoint of the Dead Sea.
The Jews did not consider the Samaritans to be true Israelites, but rather a mixture of Gentiles and Jews, which was unacceptable. Consequently, there was a tremendous animosity between these people, with the greater amount seeming to be on the part of the Jews.
The origin of the Samaritans came about after the defeat of the Northern Kingdom of Israel by the Assyrians (II Kings Chapter 17). With these Gentiles taking many Jews captive at that time, and with many Jews having fled after this defeat, the Assyrians populated the area with people from Babylon, and other places (II Kings 17:24). These gradually intermixed with the Jews who were already there, and others who later came back, and were called “Samaritans.” This happened about 700 years before Christ.
About 332 B.C. the Governor of Samaria under the Persians, went over, it is stated, to the side of Alexander the Great who gave him permission to build a Temple on Mt. Gerizim like the one built by Ezra in Jerusalem.
He built it for his son-in-law and made him High Priest. The Samaritans then established rival worship in Jerusalem and accepted the Pentateuch as their Bible.
The great controversy between the Jews and Samaritans, who the Jews considered to be half-breeds, was whether to worship on Gerizim or Moriah, where the Jewish Temple stood in Jerusalem.
As stated, the rivalry was great, with most Jews so despising the Samaritans, that when travelling between Judaea and Galilee, would take the eastern route on the other side of the Jordan, even though it extended the journey some three days. However, Jesus, as stated, ministered to the Samaritans, treating them the same as the Jews. Consequently, He would go through this area at this time, because it was the Will of His Heavenly Father. As such, one of the greatest conversions ever, would be brought about. (JSM)
Jesus was directed by the Spirit to go through Samaria because someone needed Him. Maybe the Samaritan woman couldn’t travel to Jesus, but was seeking Him and therefore Jesus went to her. It doesn’t matter what type of sinful lifestyle we live, if we seek His face He will come.
5  So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar; Some say this is the ancient city of Shechem, while others claim it is a different town altogether. Whatever it was called, it was near Jacob’s Well.
Near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph; This area was rich in Bible history as we can see with this phrase.
The Patriarch Jacob purchased this area from the children of Hamor. For this piece of land, he paid a hundred pieces of money,” whatever that amount was we don’t really know Genesis 33:19, and in Genesis 48:17-22, it is recorded Jacob giving this plot “to his son Joseph.”
6  Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
Now Jacob's well was there; This well is still present today which is amazing considering it was dug some 6,000 years ago. It is about 100 feet deep and 9 feet in diameter. Some of it is cut through solid rock of limestone. It has little water in it, and it is covered with a large stone, which has a hole in the center large enough to admit a man. It is in a valley at the foot of Mount Gerizim.
With the large stone covering it some say Jesus sat on the well, which was probably true.
Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well; This statement tells us of Jesus humanity and that He experienced aches and pains just like we do. Even though He was God He still experienced everything we do, which I find comforting because I know that He is in tune with my humanity, trials, and tribulations.
It was about the sixth hour; The sixth hour indicating about twelve o’clock noon. This was the common time of the Jewish meal, and this was the reason why his disciples were gone away to buy food as verse 8 states.
7  A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink."
A woman of Samaria came to draw water; Here we begin the great story about the Samaritan woman that is converted to Christianity. This would be the greatest moment in her life.
This woman was a Samaritan, a member of the hated mixed race referred to by the Jews as a half breed, and was known to be living in sin. No respectable Jewish man would talk to a woman under such circumstances, but Jesus did. The Good News is for every person, no matter what his or her race, social position, or past sins. We must be prepared to share the Gospel at any time and in any place. Jesus crossed all barriers to share the Good News, and we are to do the same.
Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink”; This had to of startled the woman, a Jew speaking to her and also asking a favor of her. This was all orchestrated by the Holy Spirit; a divine appointment because it was customary to draw water in the morning and evening, but here is Jesus and this woman all alone to carry on a conversation about salvation.
The flood-gates of Grace lifted themselves up to bless the misery which love pitied. Man’s heart, withered with self-righteousness, cannot understand this. Thus sinners respond to the Grace which Pharisees proudly refuse; for Grace flows in the deep channels dug by the misery of sin (Williams).
8  For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
Have you ever thought about how all the detail of this conversation got recorded in the Word of God? This verse states, “His disciples had gone away”. So who was there to make a mental note of what was happening? Some Expositors feel that John the Beloved, in fact, had remained behind with Jesus. It was John’s custom not to mention himself, in relating these experiences, even though he was present. Considering the detail to which he outlined this extremely interesting episode, gives credence to the thought that he was present.
9  Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
Then the woman of Samaria said to Him; Here we have two hearts at opposite ends of the spectrum; His, of holiness and hers of sin. This encounter of holiness and sinfulness resulted in the Salvation of the Sinner. With Divine skill Jesus leads this defiled woman by five steps into the Kingdom of God. These steps were: Contact (vs. 7); Interest (vs. 10); Conscience (vs. 16); Holiness (vs. 24); Revelation (vs. 26). Please remember these steps as we proceed.
How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?; How did this woman know Jesus was a Jew? No doubt by His speech, dress, and appearance which was different from the Samaritans.
For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans; As mentioned previously there was great animosity between the Jews and Samaritans, but here Jesus is showing us love thy neighbor. World leaders and society today promote racism, bias, and prejudice, a human characteristic at its finest that is still with us some 2,000 years later, which can only be cured by Jesus. That’s the reason Paul said, Galatians 3:28 “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus”.
10  Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."
Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God; This gift that Jesus speaks of here is that free gift of Grace that God has for anyone that repents of their sinful lifestyle and accepts Jesus as their gift of eternal life. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 2 Corinthians 9:15 Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!
And who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,'; Here Jesus is starting to introduce Himself as the Messiah in a roundabout way as to not scare away the woman.
You would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water; The Jews used the expression “living water” to denote springs, fountains, or running streams, in opposition to dead and stagnant water. Jesus is speaking of eternal life through Salvation; of quenching a spiritual thirst. John 4:14  but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."
11  The woman said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water?
Jesus completed step one on making contact (verse 9 above) and now He is on step two of peaking this woman’s curiosity with this living water for spiritual life and not physical life. It appears there is no means to obtain water from the well unless a person brings a rope with them and Jesus had no rope. So now this woman is intrigued and wants to know where she can find this living water. Her heart was yearning for something but didn’t know what.
12  Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?"
The question, “Art Thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the Well …?”, proclaims several things, she is a descendant of Ephraim, son of Joseph, and actually of Jacob himself who dug the Well. She still claims to be a Jew by her use of the pronoun, “our,” she lays claim to the Patriarchs exactly as the Jews. The Jews would disregard this claim, but Jesus knew it was true.
This phrase, “And drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?”, pulls her back to material and even carnal things, in linking salvation with heritage. Their worship of God was based on a false premise, and therefore unacceptable. Just as millions of Protestants and Catholics attempt to link God with a church building, or a particular religious denomination, or doctrine, or a statue, or a person such as the Pope, etc., when, in reality, there is no connection. Only faith in Jesus affords salvation.
Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Sinners Prayer; Pray this, and if you believe it with your heart, Jesus will save you!
“Lord Jesus I know I am a sinner.  I confess my sins to you; I am sorry for my sins; I repent (Meaning, desiring to turn from a sinful lifestyle.) of all my sins, and I am asking for your forgiveness.  I believe that only you can forgive sin.  I commit my life to you and ask you to come into my heart, direct, and take charge of my life.  I believe that you died to set me free from my sinful lifestyle and you rose from the dead to give me eternal life, and right now you are seated at the Right Hand of God Almighty. I believe you are the Son of God; the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life, and my Savior.”  I believe this and have faith you will make a new person out of me, by sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in my heart and lead me in a new life. In Jesus name I pray Amen.”

Proverbs 12:1-8
1  Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, But he who hates correction is stupid.
2  A good man obtains favor from the LORD, But a man of wicked intentions He will condemn.
3  A man is not established by wickedness, But the root of the righteous cannot be moved.
4  An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, But she who causes shame is like rottenness in his bones.
5  The thoughts of the righteous are right, But the counsels of the wicked are deceitful.
6  The words of the wicked are, "Lie in wait for blood," But the mouth of the upright will deliver them.
7  The wicked are overthrown and are no more, But the house of the righteous will stand.
8  A man will be commended according to his wisdom, But he who is of a perverse heart will be despised.
Father God, I pray your words will pierce the hearts of non-believers, the Holy Spirit will bring great conviction, and the lost will reach out for your Son Jesus in repentance. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Gospel of John 3:23-36 NKJV
Last week we left off with the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus ending and Jesus leaving Jerusalem and going to the region of Judea, where the disciples were doing the baptizing of those that believed. After the great messages of the first half of this chapter you wouldn’t think these last few verses hold much meat, but they do once you slow down and ponder them.
23  Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there. And they came and were baptized.
Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim; As to its exact location of Aenon, seems to be lost, however, it is believed to have been located about fifty miles northeast of Jerusalem. Aenon means fountains, therefore we can assume there was a fountain or many fountains there or springs that fed a stream or pool of water.
Because there was much water there; It was necessary to camp near this large amount of water more so for everyday activities like washing, drinking, and necessities of life. Water was also needed for the camels and other animals that brought the travelers there. When we read the verse we just think of the need for water to baptize and not the great magnitude of people and the amount of water needed to sustain life.
And they came and were baptized; John was a forerunner of Christ to prepare the way and introduce the Messiah. John did this and did it very well, so do you wonder why he was still baptizing? The message John delivered to people was spread by word of mouth and people believed. I believe there was an out pouring of the Holy Spirit on anyone that heard John’s words via the grapevine and a great desire came over the people to come and hear John and to be baptized. Now with Jesus on the scene and His disciples baptizing, the crowd would diminish because John would be pointing them to Jesus. The next few verses tells us that his ministry is coming to an end.
24  For John had not yet been thrown into prison.
This verse tells us John continued in his ministry because that is what a servant of the Lord does and it also tells us his death was just around the corner. A servant continues preaching the Gospel till their death. John still toiled in his work even though the Messiah had come. All the other Apostles did the same and John the Baptist was no different.
25  Then there arose a dispute between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purification.
As we can see by this verse there was a dispute about religion some 2,000 years ago just like today. The Greek Text indicates it was a very angry debate. The Jews that were engaging in this dispute with John’s disciples were no doubt deeply rooted in their religion of laws. They didn’t understand the new Gospel and didn’t want to understand it therefore attempted to tear down what was being preached. There were many types of washing in the Jewish traditions that was believed to wash away sin, what exactly the dispute was about we do not know.
26  And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified—behold, He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him!"
What human characteristics shine forth from this verse? Pride, arrogance, jealousy; could it be these individuals were instigating a rivalry between John and Jesus? You have to wonder what they had their faith in, Jesus or worldly status. They saw their usefulness slipping away and didn’t like what was happening. Soon they would be of no importance and just like everyone else around them and that was bothering them. They would no longer be able to strut around and stand out among the crowd. Our pride can grasp us so quickly and cause us to sin it will make our head spin so beware. True piety teaches us to rejoice that sinners turn to Christ and become holy, whether they follow us or not.
27  John answered and said, "A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven.
If you go back and read verses 24, 25, 26 and 27 together, John’s response says that God is in control and the people would come to him if God willed it. John did not join into their feelings or sympathize with their love of fame. He came to honor Jesus, not to build up a sect; he rejoiced at the success of the Messiah, and began to teach them to rejoice in the fact that people are being saved and it didn’t matter who led the person to Christ.
This message John the Baptist is giving, is for us also. It is not about religion, it is about faith in Jesus and being Born Again to be able to enter into the Kingdom of our eternal Father.
28  You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, 'I am not the Christ,' but, 'I have been sent before Him.'
John is telling his followers that are grumbling that he is not Christ and that he was sent beforehand to prepare the hearts of people to accept Jesus when He came. He is telling them they were there and witnessed Jesus coming to be baptized, and at that time John pointed out the Messiah. So what part of the human nature was keeping these people from following Jesus? Was it pride? Was it change? Was it the fear of something new that Jesus was teaching? Were these people Born Again by acting this way, probably not because their faith was in John the Baptist.
29  He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled.
He who has the bride is the bridegroom; What John is saying here is that all the souls that he had been winning all belong to the bridegroom, they are Christ bride. He has no claim on them, he just bore witness to them and it was the power of the Holy Spirit that brought them to repentance. In other words he pointed them in the right direction toward salvation. Isaiah 62:5; Revelation 21:2, Revelation 21:9; Revelation 22:17; Ephesians 5:26-27, Ephesians 5:32; 2 Corinthians 11:2
But the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice; John is like a bridegroom’s best man. The best man makes a toast to the groom and bride and directs everyone’s attention to the newly married couple and that is what John is doing here. A best man at a wedding is happy for his friend and rejoices over the wedding.
Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled; John is greatly please to see the crowds going to Jesus and rejoices in hearing Him talk. It must have made John feel good inside seeing that he had accomplished what he was sent to do.
30  He must increase, but I must decrease.
He must increase; Jesus authority and influence among the people must grow. His doctrine shall continue to spread until it extends through all the earth.
But I must decrease; What John is saying here is that he didn’t come to start a religion or a group of followers. His ministry was to direct people to Jesus and when that was done his work was finished. Now he was to fade out of sight like the stars of a clear night fades away with the rising of the morning sun.
John's willingness to decrease in importance shows unusual humility. Pastors and other Christian leaders should be focused more on people being saved and not on the success of their ministries. Beware of those who put more emphasis on their own achievements than on God's Kingdom.
31  He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.
He who comes from above is above all; This phrase is of course referring to Jesus. He wasn’t just a mere man; His origin was from Heaven. He is the creator of all things, therefore above all creation in nature, rank, and authority. He is superior to all prophets, angels, powers, and dominions.
He who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth; Refers to all men, even the great Prophets of old. Prime example of speaking of earthly things is the TV evangelist preach our life here and now is the good life; reach for the gusto here and now; if it feels good do it; your deserve a Mercedes Benz. If now is the good life here on earth, is doesn’t say much for Heaven then, does it?
He who comes from heaven is above all; This phrase is referring to those that came to John complaining that all were going to Jesus. They were probably saying that Jesus was just another prophet, but John is telling them He is above all.
Jesus words were trustworthy because he came from Heaven and was speaking of what He had seen there. His words were the very words of God. Our whole spiritual life depends on the answer to one question: Who is Jesus Christ? If you accept Jesus as only a prophet or teacher, you have to reject his teaching and then you will pick and chose what you want to believe in the Bible. This same Jesus has invited us to accept him and live with him eternally. When we fully understand who Jesus is and what He did for us, we will believe what he said, and live by His Word.
32  And what He has seen and heard, that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony.
What John is telling us here is that Jesus was preaching things of a Heavenly nature that He had seen and heard in Heaven. His doctrine was pure and plain, yet many couldn’t accept it. They had that doubting Thomas spirit within them.
Often times people appear becoming followers of Jesus, but in the end know nothing but a religion. You have to ask yourself of the crowds that came, how many actually repented? Did they truly give their life to Jesus or just go through the motions of the ritual of baptism.
I have to admit that infant baptism and confirmation didn’t do anything for me, it was just a religious ritualistic custom that all Catholics were expected and suppose to do. There was no change in me spiritually, but when I repented of my sin nature and accepted Jesus, a change happened within my heart and then I had a great desire to be baptized.
33  He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true.
Born Again Christians receive and fully believed God’s doctrine. They have certified or sealed their heart with His Word that it is true. God is true, faithful, and is the author. A true believer pledges themselves to the truth; they are a witness for God; surrenders all to Him; believes every word in the Bible and uses it as a spiritual survival guide for eternal life. The man that does not do this, that is not willing to pledge his belief that God is true, sets the seal of his heart that God is a liar and untrustworthy. 1 John 5:10 He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son.
34  For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.
This verse is referring to the Trinity, therefore Jesus always spoke the words of God because He was God and the Holy Spirit. Jesus wasn’t given a measure or just a short message to give to the people like the prophets, He spoke the words of God at all times. The prophets were given a measure of what God wanted them to say whenever He had a message for His people.
35  The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.
What this verse is saying is that God so loved His Son, that He placed everything in Jesus hands for the redemption of mankind, OUT OF LOVE.
36  He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."
This final verse of this chapter plainly states that anyone that places their faith (meaning repents and accepts Jesus) in Jesus and what He did at Calvary, will have eternal life, but those that don’t believe will suffer eternally with the creator of the sin nature.
What a chapter this has been. Salvation, eternal happiness, living with Jesus, praising God, singing in the Heavenly choir, etc. Jesus is preparing a mansion for His Bride, are you a part of the Bride?

Proverbs 11:21-31
21  Though they join forces, the wicked will not go unpunished; But the posterity of the righteous will be delivered.
22  As a ring of gold in a swine's snout, So is a lovely woman who lacks discretion.
23  The desire of the righteous is only good, But the expectation of the wicked is wrath.
24  There is one who scatters, yet increases more; And there is one who withholds more than is right, But it leads to poverty.
25  The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.
26  The people will curse him who withholds grain, But blessing will be on the head of him who sells it.
27  He who earnestly seeks good finds favor, But trouble will come to him who seeks evil.
28  He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the righteous will flourish like foliage.
29  He who troubles his own house will inherit the wind, And the fool will be servant to the wise of heart.
30  The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who wins souls is wise.
31  If the righteous will be recompensed on the earth, How much more the ungodly and the sinner.
Father God, I pray and ask that your Holy Spirit takes non-believers and leads them to the truth of the Gospel, and that those led to the truth will accept the truth and reject untrue doctrine and beliefs they are living by. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Gospel of John 3:18-22 NKJV
This lesson is about the change that takes place in the heart of a regenerated person. Anyone that is sincere and accepts Jesus as their Saviour, a change happens in that person’s life; a change that is done from the inside out starting with the heart of stone, which is enmity toward God, being replaced with a heart of flesh. It is a change the non-believed does not understand!
18  "He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
He who believes in Him is not condemned; Anyone that believes in Jesus and what He did on the Cross for Humanity; that places their faith in Jesus; that has accepted Him; that relies on Him; that trusts His promises for salvation; that goes to Jesus for all things has eternal life here after.
God pardons sin, and delivers us from deserved punishment, because we believe in His Son Jesus. Jesus died in our place; He suffered for us, and by His sufferings our sins are atoned for; done away with by the sacrifice of Jesus which He offered on the Cross, and was accepted by God, to forgive sin. When a sinner believes in Jesus, he trusts in Him as having died in his place, and God having accepted the offering which Christ made in our place, as being an equivalent for our sufferings in hell, there is now no further condemnation. Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
But he who does not believe is condemned already; A person that does not believe, meaning Born Again, is condemned because of the fall of Adam. Due to the fall and by the very act of having a human birth into this world, one stands “condemned.” It is called “original sin.”
Even though a child (meaning toddler, pre-teen, and possibly early teen) is protected through the state of innocence, upon reaching the age of accountability, whenever that may be, unless they are brought to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, the person is “condemned,” i.e., “lost.”
Because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God; This means, that believing in Jesus as a “Good Man” or “Miracle-Worker,” or even as a “Prophet,” will not suffice for eternal life in Heaven. One must believe in, and accept Him, as Saviour, meaning not wanting to live a life of inherited sin that separates him from Jesus and asks Jesus to forgive them because of the way they are living and that they want to live for Jesus. One must have the desire to live according to Jesus ways and not the ways of the world and what the world devises for salvation.
19  And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
And this is the condemnation; The word, “condemnation,” as it is used here, in the Greek Text is “krisis,” and means; this is the cause of condemnation; or this is the reason why men will be punished. Jesus came for the deliverance of mankind from their sinful nature, because they were already condemned due to the Fall of Adam. Jesus! condemnation will come at a later date when we stand before Him on Judgment Day.
That the light has come into the world; The light of course is referring to Jesus. Jesus is the truth and the way and through the teachings of the Gospel, sin is revealed in people’s lives. The light of Jesus denotes instruction, teaching, doctrine, etc. that illuminates the path of a sinners life.
And men loved darkness rather than light; Many people don't want their lives exposed to God's light because they are afraid of what will be revealed. They don't want to be changed. Darkness is the emblem of ignorance, iniquity, error, superstition, heritage, customs, rituals, false teachings; whatever is opposite to truth and godliness.
Because their deeds were evil; Men who commit crime commonly choose to do it in the night, so as to escape detection. So men who are wicked prefer false doctrine and dishonesty. Thus the Pharisees cloaked their crimes under the errors of their system; and, amid their false doctrines and superstitions, they attempted to convince others that they had great zeal for God.
20  For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.
For everyone practicing evil hates the light; This is true of all mankind. They choose to practice their deeds of wickedness in secret. They are afraid of openly practicing, because they can be easily detected. Therefore, most crimes are committed in the night. So it is with the sinner against God. The lost hates the gospel, even though they don’t realize it, but it condemns his conduct, and his conscience would trouble him if he was enlightened. How many times have you read the lists of sins in the NT and had a feeling of guilt come over you? The light of those words convicts the heart of a sinner, but life goes on as usual because the sinner hides those feelings of guilt out of shame. They don’t want anyone to know how wicked they are based on God’s Word, so they gloss over the list of sins and compares themselves with other human beings, but God knows!
And does not come to the light; Mankind by nature is a proud being and it is very difficult for a proud person to humble themselves and admit they are wrong, or don’t fully understand something especially spiritual, or come to grips that their heritage or what they have been taught is not the real truth. Therefore they won’t accept the light of Jesus for fear of what loved ones, neighbors, or society will think of them, so they continue their life as usual. It shouldn’t matter what others think of us, because the only thing that should matter is what “God thinks” of us. One day we will stand before God and not man for judgment.
Lest his deeds should be exposed; To “expose” here means not only to “detect” or make manifest, but also includes the idea of “condemnation” when his deeds are detected. The gospel would make his wickedness obvious, and his conscience would condemn him. What can we learn from this verse:
1.   That one design of the gospel is “to rebuke” men; to convict them of sin in order to bring a sinner to the foot of the Cross in repentance.
2.   That men by nature “hate” the gospel. No man who is a sinner loves it; and no man by nature is inclined to come to it, any more than an adulterer or thief is of a mind to come to the daylight, and do his deeds of wickedness there.
3.   The reason why the gospel, is hated is that men are born sinners. “Christ is hated because sin is loved.”
4.   The sinner must be convicted or convinced of sin. If it isn’t in this world, it will be in the next, which will be too late. There is no escape for him; and the only way to avoid condemnation in the world to come is to come humbly and acknowledge sin here and now, and seek forgiveness from Jesus.
21  But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God."
If we would rephrase this verse it would read something like this; But those who are Born Again  come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.
But he who does the truth comes to the light; The sinner acts from falsehood and error. The true believer acts according to truth. The sinner believes a lie, that God will not punish, or that there is no God, or God is all forgiving and will forgive them when they stand before Him, or that God is all love and would not sent anyone to hell, or that there is no eternity and no hell. The Christian believes all these, and conducts their lives according to the truth of God. This is the difference between a Christian and a sinner.
A person has to have a desire to come to God. No one can force a person to turn to God, just like a person can’t force a horse to drink at the water trough. We can lead a horse to water and if it is thirsty it will drink otherwise it won’t. It is the same with people, they can be led to God but if they have no desire to accept what God has for them then all we can do is plant Gospel Seeds and pray they will germinate and grow. If a person does seek God then the Holy Spirit will guide them in their journey. If a person wants to or feels they need to do something toward salvation, then seeking God with a sincere heart is all that is required, good works and deeds will not get a person that free gift of Grace from God. John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
That his deeds may be clearly seen; This phrase proclaims the great change that takes place in the Believer’s life, upon coming to Christ. The evil deeds are forever gone, with righteous deeds taking their place.
A child of God has the light of Jesus shining forth from them. Their deeds are clearly seen and not understood by those around them. For example; at work co-workers may try to get the Christian to slow down production or stand around and talk when there is work to be done. The Christian views this as stealing from the company and may even state this, but the co-workers just laugh it off. Another fine example of thievery at work in current times is when employees surf the internet when they are supposed to be working. The boss may not know the actions of their employees under the veil of darkness and secrecy, but God knows and one day will have to answer for those sins come Judgment Day unless one repents and accepts Jesus before they die.
That they have been done in God; This phrase is referring to the conduct or lifestyle of a child of God. That their deeds are performed according to the will of God, or by the assistance of God’s Spirit, and are such as God will approve. The actions of good people are performed by the influence and aid of the Holy Spirit. The character of a Born Again Christian is:
1.   He does truth. He loves it, seeks it, and follows it.
2.   He comes to the light. He does not attempt to deceive himself or others.
3.   He is willing to know himself, and aims to do it. He desires to know the true state of his heart before God.
4.   A special object of his efforts is that his deeds may be “shaped in God.” He desires to be a good man; to receive continual aid from God, and to perform such actions as He will approve. A true Christian does these things out of love for Jesus because of what Jesus did for him on the Cross.
We have to work out our own salvation, not in good deeds and works, but through the Word of God and humbling ourselves in repentance. Philippians 2:12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;
22  After these things Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He remained with them and baptized.
With the cleansing of the temple and discussions that Jesus had with the Pharisees, hostility was starting to take place, therefore Jesus and His disciples moved out of the metropolis of Jerusalem and into the region of Judea. As we see in the upcoming verses this area was in close proximity of where John the Baptist was still baptizing those that came to him. In this area Jesus disciples baptized those that became believers. Only the disciples did the baptizing, not Jesus. John 4:2 (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples)
“This is the close of our Lord’s discourse with Nicodemus - a discourse condensing the gospel, giving the most striking exhibition and illustration of truth, and representing especially the fundamental doctrine of regeneration and the evidence of the change. It is clear that the Saviour regarded this as lying at the foundation of religion. Without it we cannot possibly be saved. And now it becomes every reader, as in the presence of God, and in view of the judgment-seat of Christ, solemnly to ask himself whether he has experienced this change? Whether he knows by experience what it is to be born of that Spirit? If he does he will be saved. If not, he is in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity, and should give no sleep to his eyes until he has made his peace with God.” (Barnes)
Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
