Proverbs 16:11-21
11  Honest weights and scales are the LORD's; All the weights in the bag are His work.
12  It is an abomination for kings to commit wickedness, For a throne is established by righteousness.
13  Righteous lips are the delight of kings, And they love him who speaks what is right.
14  As messengers of death is the king's wrath, But a wise man will appease it.
15  In the light of the king's face is life, And his favor is like a cloud of the latter rain.
16  How much better to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.
17  The highway of the upright is to depart from evil; He who keeps his way preserves his soul.
18  Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.
19  Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, Than to divide the spoil with the proud.
20  He who heeds the word wisely will find good, And whoever trusts in the LORD, happy is he.
21  The wise in heart will be called prudent, And sweetness of the lips increases learning.
Father God, we pray for a healing of those we love whether family, friend, or neighbor. Heal them physically and spiritually. Let them be a testimony to your Greatness!  In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Gospel of John 6:60-71 NKJV
Last week the lesson was all about the eating of Jesus flesh and drinking His blood which signifies the atonement of our sins with Jesus dying on the Cross. Some believe this to be literal and this is why this week Jesus listeners find the saying difficult to accept and leave Him. Jesus is speaking spiritually and they are thinking carnally. Jesus perceives their thoughts and is the reason He explains what He is saying.
60  Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, "This is a hard saying; who can understand it?"
Therefore many of His disciples; Usually when we hear the word “disciple” in scripture we think of a Christian or Apostle. But one of the definitions is this; to teach; to train; bring up; to convert to doctrines or principles; which is the case here. These disciples/people were being taught by Jesus; they were students of Jesus. Were they saved? Only God knows that.
When they heard this, said, "This is a hard saying; who can understand it; The word “hard” here means “offensive, disagreeable”, which they could not accept. Some have understood it to mean “difficult to be understood,” but not in this case. The doctrine which he delivered was opposed to their beliefs and laws; it seemed to be absurd, and they therefore rejected it.
These doctrines have always been among the most offensive that men have been called on to believe, and many, rather than trust in them, have chosen to draw back to perdition. This doctrine Jesus taught, Him being the atoning sacrifice, was so offensive, and that it was necessary to partake of through faith to be saved; they could not agree with. This teaching of eating flesh and drinking blood is not to be taken literally. It is all about living by faith by understanding why Jesus died and rose from the dead for us; it is walking in Jesus shadow in all aspects of our life here on earth; it is reading and absorbing the Word of God; it is breaking bread/communion in remembrance of what Jesus did for us on the Cross. These followers/disciples were not thinking spiritually, this is why it was a hard saying to them. 1 Corinthians 11:24-25 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me."  25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."
61  When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained about this, He said to them, "Does this offend you?
Being God and knowing all things Jesus knew there was rebellion starting deep within the hearts of the people, therefore He asked the question; "Does this offend you”?
Preachers love to preach to a full house, but when they preach the true Gospel it offends people and as a result the people leave, which is the same here for Jesus. Whenever the message of the Cross is preached, people find it hard to accept. Two thousand years ago it wasn’t accepted and also today. For a church to keep its members a watered down message is preached. (Matthew 16:21; I Corinthians 1:23; Galatians 5:11)
62  What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before?
Jesus does not say that those who were then present would see him ascend, but he implies that he would ascend. They had taken offence because he said he came down from heaven. Instead of explaining it that away, he proceeds to state another doctrine most offensive to them, that he would ascend back to heaven. Only the apostles were present at his ascension, Acts 1:9. As Jesus was to ascend to heaven, it was clear that he could not have intended literally that they should eat his flesh.
63  It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
It is the Spirit who gives life; The word “Spirit,” here has a twofold meaning. It is the Holy Spirit that gives life and that life is a spiritual everlasting life. Secondly, “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit,” meaning the doctrine which He was teaching in opposition to their notions and desires was spiritual; it quickens and nourishes the soul; it is from heaven. Your doctrine or your views are earthly, and may be called flesh, or fleshly, as pertaining only to the support of the body. You place a great value on the doctrine that Moses fed the body; yet that did not permanently profit, for your fathers are dead. You seek also food from me, but your views and desires are earthly.”
The flesh profits nothing; The “flesh” meaning carnal views and desires, or the literal understanding of Jesus doctrine, will not produce eternal life. This would be human works or man alone trying to achieve Heaven. The bread that Moses gave, which is the food they sought, would not be of value to their spiritual well being.
The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life’ Jesus is saying His words are spiritual. They are not to be understood literally, as if to really eat His flesh, but they are to be understood as spiritual food for the soul which God has made by His coming into the world. They are fitting to produce or give life to the souls dead in sin.
64  But there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him.
Jesus is speaking about the people in the crowd that He is speaking to (followers/disciples), and also referring to Judas Iscariot that would hand Him over to the Jews for Crucifixion. This shows He is omniscient.
65  And He said, "Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father."
We are drawn by the Father through the working of the Holy Spirit, for faith in Christ is the gift of God. The Holy Spirit gives spiritual life, without the work of the Holy Spirit, we cannot even see our need for new life. All spiritual renewal begins and ends with God. He reveals truth to us, lives within us, and then enables us to respond to that truth. John 14:17  the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
66  From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.
The doctrines Jesus was teaching were so overwhelmingly different from what they anticipated and knew, they now refused to accept Him at all.
What causes many of his followers to desert him? Was it because they realized that he wasn't going to be the conquering Messiah/King they expected; was it because He refused to give in to their self-centered requests; was it because He emphasized faith, not deeds; was it because His teachings were difficult to understand, and some of his words were offensive? For some it may have been all of these reasons and for others it may have been one or two of these reasons. As we grow in faith, some lessons are difficult to accept, but instead of giving up, ask Jesus to show you what the teachings mean and how they apply to your life.
67  Then Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you also want to go away?"
With this question that Jesus asks the twelve Apostles, tells us there is no middle ground with Jesus; there is no walking the rail, you’re either on one side of the fence or the other. When He asked the disciples if they would also leave, He was showing that they could either accept or reject him; claim the Father or the Devil as their father.
Just as the Father tests our faith from time to time, here Jesus is testing the faith of the Apostles. “Do you also want to go away,” presents a choice, free will to follow Jesus whether saved or not saved. God compels none to remain with him against their will, and the question in such trying times is submitted to every man whether he will or will not go away. If a person is saved, it is their choice to remain in God’s Grace.
68  But Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
In his straightforward way, Peter answered for all of the Apostles and for us, there is no other way. The Pharisees, the Sadducees, and the scribes were corrupt, and unable to guide them. Although there are many philosophies, religions, and self-styled authorities Jesus alone has the words of eternal life. People look everywhere for eternal life and miss Christ, the only source.
The doctrine which leads to eternal life may be mysterious, difficult to understand, but we should not reject them. Nothing would be gained by rejecting them. The atheist, the infidel, and the philosopher believe, or professes to believe in something, so why should we not believe the mysteries of the Bible. The poor, lost, sinful man has nowhere else to go but to Jesus. He is the way, the truth, and the life, and if the sinner goes any other way than to Jesus he will wander and die. We should, therefore, put all our trust in all the words, in the teachings of the Son of God. The words that He speaks are spirit and are life.
69  Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
This verse is the rest of Peter’s answer. He is still speaking for himself and the other 11 Apostle and being very bold and positive, but the next verse Jesus cautions him. Peter’s bold positive answers come from being with Jesus, seeing the miracles, listening to Jesus, and realizing through these things, Jesus is the Messiah.
Have you come to believe through the Word of God? Are you solid in your belief like Peter or are you still on the fence? Jesus is the only way to Heaven. We have to go through Him via means of repentance (not wanting to live the way we are), confessing our sins to Jesus, asking Him to forgive us for living for self and worldly things, and then ask Him to take us by the hand and lead us through life here on Earth from this day forward till the day we leave this earth.
70  Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?"
Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose you, the twelve; This question Jesus asks of the Apostles proclaims far more than random selection, but rather specific direction as given to Him by the Father. In fact, Jesus prayed all night long seeking the Will of the Father respecting the choice of these men. Did you know Jesus prayed all night over who to chose to be His Apostles? What an example for us to include Jesus in all that we do. Luke 6:12-16 Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.  13 And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles:  14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew;  15 Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot;  16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.
And one of you is a devil; Meaning is a deceiver, a liar, and a murderer, just as the devil is from the beginning. Judas was all of these things in the betraying of his master. Jesus is giving Judas ample time to repent of his devious intentions, but his fleshly wants of money won. Judas, stayed and used Jesus for personal gain. Many people today turn away from Christ. Others pretend to follow, going to church for status, approval of family and friends, or business contacts. But there are only two real responses to Jesus, you either accept him or reject him.
71  He spoke of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for it was he who would betray Him, being one of the twelve.
He spoke of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon; Judas was a man of Kerioth from the tribe of Judah. Joshua 15:25 Hazor, Hadattah, Kerioth, Hezron (which is Hazor). Of the twelve Apostles, he was the only one from the tribe of Judah, the tribe that Jesus was.
For it was he who would betray Him, being one of the twelve; Jesus didn’t expose Judas at this time, do you have any thoughts as to why? I believe it was for them to check their confidence; to put them on guard; to lead them to self-examination. It may have been due to the way Peter was speaking??? It is a lesson for us also not to get bold and brazen, but to remain humble like our Lord.
This concludes Chapter 6 which has been a very spiritual chapter, a chapter that is all about the Gospel and why we need Jesus in our life. Without Jesus we walk in darkness.

Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,

Sinners Prayer; Pray this, and if you believe it with your heart, Jesus will save you!
“Lord Jesus I know I am a sinner.  I confess my sins to you; I am sorry for my sins; I repent (Meaning, desiring to turn from a sinful lifestyle.) of all my sins, and I am asking for your forgiveness.  I believe that only you can forgive sin.  I commit my life to you and ask you to come into my heart, direct, and take charge of my life.  I believe that you died to set me free from my sinful lifestyle and you rose from the dead to give me eternal life, and right now you are seated at the Right Hand of God Almighty. I believe you are the Son of God; the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life, and my Savior.”  I believe this and have faith you will make a new person out of me, by sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in my heart and lead me in a new life. In Jesus name I pray Amen.”

Gospel of John 6:46-59 NKJV
This week’s lesson has Jesus preaching about Himself, the Bread of Life. It is repeated several times in various ways, but sadly not being understood by the Jewish people. They can’t think spiritually.
We left off last week with this verse; John 6:45 It is written in the prophets, 'AND THEY SHALL ALL BE TAUGHT BY GOD.' Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.
Verse 45 and the opening verse 46 go together. Jesus is adding here that no one has seen the Father but all are taught by Him through His Spirit or Son.
46  Not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God; He has seen the Father.
Not that anyone has seen the Father; Jesus is trying to get these people to understand that a lost sinner will learn about God by spiritual means, to fully comprehend and understand the Father. The Holy Spirit will convict and teach a lost soul and they will turn to God in repentance. This isn’t something where a person will sit down and God will appear before the person and teach them; it is all spiritual.
Except He who is from God; He has seen the Father; This of course speaks of Jesus and He fully comprehends and understands the Father because He is part of the Trinity and is God. Jesus is telling the Jews, that despite all of their talk about God, they really know nothing about Him. In reality, had they known God, they would have known Jesus.
47  Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.
Believe what? One must believe that Jesus is the Saviour, and that He will save all who come to Him. John 3:16 This is God’s promise to us if we believe and continue to believe. Everlasting life becomes effective the moment a person acknowledges Jesus as the Saviour through repentance.
48  I am the bread of life.
I am; By using the words “I am,” Jesus plainly identifies Himself as the Jehovah of the Old Testament. Exodus 3:14  And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'
The bread of life; As men eat natural bread to sustain the physical body, they also have to eat the Word of God (John 1:1) daily to sustain their spirituality. The symbolism is intended to express the idea, that physical bread is to be eaten constantly; likewise, the Believer is to feed on Jesus constantly.
In the remaining verses of this Chapter, Jesus tells us how this can be done.
49  Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
Jesus is telling these people that even though God supplied the Israelites food, it was only food to sustain physical life; it only satisfied temporal wants; it didn’t provide eternal life. The most distinguished temporal blessings will not save one from death. Wealth, friends, food, clothing, will not preserve life. Something more than earthly blessings is needed and that being Jesus, the bread which gives everlasting life, which cometh down from heaven.
50  This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die.
Can you visualize Jesus making this statement and while He is speaking it He is pointing with His pointer finger to His chest?
Again He is speaking of spiritual life and not physical life, His body that was to be sacrificed on the altar of the Cross for all mankind.
51  I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world."
I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; As stated previously Jesus gives eternal life when one fully comprehends the reason Jesus went to the Cross for us and believes in His resurrection from the grave.
And the bread that I shall give is My flesh; Meaning His body would be offered as a sacrifice for sin. “This is my body which is broken for you,” 1 Corinthians 11:24. The word “bread” in Hebrew also means “flesh” in Syriac and Arabic.
Which I shall give for the life of the world; Meaning that sinners might, by his atoning sacrifice, be recovered from spiritual death, and be brought to eternal life; of Him giving Himself freely on the Cross as a Sacrifice for us to believe on. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not just ours, but also for the sins of the whole world.
To eat living bread means to accept Christ into our lives and become united with him. We are united with Christ in two ways: 1) by believing in his death (the sacrifice of his flesh) and resurrection and 2) by devoting ourselves to living as he requires, depending on his teachings for guidance and trusting in the Holy Spirit for power.
52  The Jews therefore quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?"
The Jews therefore quarreled among themselves; This phrase tells us that maybe some of these Jews understood what Jesus was saying since they were quarreling. So we have some believing and some not believing.
Saying, "How can this Man give us His flesh to eat; Those that are saying this are only thinking in the physical realm of life as do many of today think. Despite all their claims of knowing God, and their boasts of being God’s chosen people, in reality they did not know God, meaning being saved, and consequently could not think in spiritual terms.
A person that is not saved struggles with Bible Scripture in understanding it, I can testify to that. Before I was saved I couldn’t understand the true meaning of the Bible. After I repented of my lifestyle and accepted Jesus, the Holy Spirit lifted the veil from over my heart so that I could comprehend what was being stated. Unredeemed man, despite all his intellectual loftiness, cannot think as God thinks despite education and self-improvement. Man has difficulty thinking beyond the things of this earth.
53  Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.
With this verse and the next one many of those that were following Jesus abandon Him because they couldn’t grasp what Jesus was saying. They could only think in the physical sense and not the spiritual sense Jesus was speaking of.
Jesus is talking about His body that would be offered on the cross as the ultimate sacrifice for sin, and would be raised up from the dead and received into heaven. It is to fully believe in Him and what He did for us is what He means here; however, this Verse tells us the degree of believing that is required; it refers to the Cross being the total object of one’s belief; failing that, there is no Life.
Jesus sacrifice on the Cross for us is the same as the sacrifices of the OT, but only had to be done once, whereas those of the OT had to be repeated over and over and over. The meat of the animal sacrifices was eaten as part of the sacrifice. The meat Jesus is speaking of is spiritual meat, “faith” in the sacrifice on the Cross. So how do we eat this flesh Jesus is talking about? It is by consuming the Word of God, living by every dot and tittle in the Bible, placing our faith in Jesus, repenting and living for Jesus, etc.
54  Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
Whoever eats My flesh; This was a figure of speech, speaking of His body that He would Sacrifice on the Cross at Calvary. His Body was given as a Perfect Sacrifice, because it was perfect, and, consequently, that which God could accept, and, did accept! When one partakes of that by Faith, at that moment God gives the Believer Eternal Life on the basis of what Christ did for us (Acts 3:16; 4:12; 15:9; Romans 3:24–25; 5:1–11; 10:9–10; Galatians 2:16–20; 3:1–26; Ephesians 2:8–9; I Peter 1:5–13).
And drinks My blood has eternal life; Again this is a figure of speech, which speaks of one placing their trust in the blood shed by Jesus at Calvary’s Cross, which washed away the sin of man. Upon Faith in that great act, God grants to the Believer the benefits thereof of a life that is Justified and Sanctified (I Corinthians 6:9–11).
And I will raise him up at the last day; This is the fourth time this is spoken by Jesus. Therefore the Believer has a fourfold assurance of being raised up on the last day.
55  For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed.
The idea is, that Christ’s Flesh and Blood stand in the same relation to the true life of man that food and drink do to the physical life of earth (Reynolds).
Some may find it repulsive that Jesus used “My Flesh” and “My Blood” as a way to describe a very spiritual experience, but the union with Christ that one obtains upon Salvation, can best be described in the exact manner that Jesus uses here. Our Salvation was not purchased as Peter said, 1 Peter 1:18-19  knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,  19  but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.
56  He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.
To abide means to be intimately connected. To dwell or abide in Him is to remain in the belief of His doctrine, and in the participation of the benefits of His death. Jesus dwells in believers by his Spirit and doctrine. We have to be rooted in the Bible and draw the nourishment we need to sustain spiritual everlasting life from the Word of God just like a plant draws the nutrients from the soil for life. John 15:1-6  "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.  2  Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.  3  You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.  4  Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.  5  "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.  6  If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.
Jesus is telling these Jewish people and us that His life had to become our life in all aspects, but they and many of today cannot accept this concept. People would rather believe and practice the doctrine of man instead of what Jesus says in the Bible. One must take up the Cross of Christ daily to abide in Him. Luke 9:23  Then He said to them all, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.
57  As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me.
Jesus lived for His Fathers will and did it perfectly. Just as Jesus did this and lives, we are to live according to Jesus will, and live. Galatians 2:20  I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
58  This is the bread which came down from heaven—not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever."
Again Jesus points to Himself as the true means to gain access to our Heavenly Fathers Kingdom. He Alone, is the True Bread of Life and gives Eternal Life, to those who “eat of this Bread”, which means to accept Him as for Who He is and What He would do. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
59  These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum.
This that Jesus was teaching was the first time anything like this was taught in the synagogue. Sadly it was rejected by the majority just as it is today.
Next week we will conclude this chapter. It is sad the rejection of the things Jesus says and He even questioning the Apostles to see if they wanted to remain with Him.
Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,

Proverbs 15:25-33
25  The LORD will destroy the house of the proud, But He will establish the boundary of the widow.
26  The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD, But the words of the pure are pleasant.
27  He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, But he who hates bribes will live.
28  The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, But the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil.
29  The LORD is far from the wicked, But He hears the prayer of the righteous.
30  The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, And a good report makes the bones healthy.
31  The ear that hears the rebukes of life Will abide among the wise.
32  He who disdains instruction despises his own soul, But he who heeds rebuke gets understanding.
33  The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom, And before honor is humility.
Father God, pour out you Holy Spirit to those that are dear to us. Pierce their heart unto repentance and salvation.  In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Gospel of John 6:30-45 NKJV
Last week we left off with the people of the crowd and Jesus conversing about working the works of God. Verse 29 they ask what works they could do of God. They were good people based on human standards and because of this they wanted to do what would please God. They thought they could find favor with God by doing works instead of repenting and accepting Jesus as their Saviour. This is so true today also. Many people are very good people based on their outward actions of kindness, generosity, and loving nature but may not have that personal relationship with Jesus that they need. Many people compare their lifestyle according to other peoples lifestyle and therefore deem themselves good in God’s eyes. How about you are you like the people Jesus is talking to? Do you see yourself living a life based on God’s Word or the actions of other people? Okay, enough said, let’s see how this conversation goes and if Jesus can convince these people they need Him as their Saviour.
30  Therefore they said to Him, "What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do?
A sign they ask for after just being fed with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish the evening before. Is this the same crowd that was on the other side of the lake? Are the people that are asking for a sign, new to the crowd? Are these Pharisees asking for a sign because they were always asking for a sign and then when they would witness a miracle they still wouldn’t believe. Jesus just told them to “believe on Him” in the previous verse, but completely ignored what He said. The gross ignorance of the people was astounding to say the least! But is it any better presently?
31  Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, 'HE GAVE THEM BREAD FROM HEAVEN TO EAT.'"
Do you remember this verse from last week? John 6:26 Jesus answered them and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
Jesus tells these people they seek Him because they “ate of the loaves”. In this verse the people are bringing up the fact that their forefathers ate manna in the wilderness that Moses provided. So is this the sign they are looking for, Jesus to provide them with food each day? For some reason these people are comparing Jesus to Moses. They are replying that Moses had accredited himself as sent from God by giving Israel the Manna, as stated in Psalm 78:24, and that he had fed upwards of several millions of people for some 40 years.
The Rabbis taught that the former Redeemer, Moses, caused Manna to descend from Heaven for them, and that the latter Redeemer, the Messiah, would perform a similar Miracle. So this is what they were bringing to the attention of Jesus.
They seem to not understand that the entirety of the 78th Psalm proclaims an indictment against Israel’s unbelief at the time of Moses, and Israel’s children were doing exactly the same, in the time of Christ.
32  Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven; Here Jesus is telling the people that Moses didn’t give the Israelites bread from Heaven, it was God.
But My Father gives you the true bread from heaven; With this phrase Jesus is stating that the bread He is talking about is spiritual bread from Heaven, Himself, the Messiah. It is bread that will nourish the spirit of a person for eternity if they will believe. The manna of Moses time was only to sustain physical life.
33  For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."
Here again Jesus introduces Himself as the Messiah, meaning the bread of God from Heaven that gives life to anyone that will repent of their lifestyle, ask for forgiveness of their sinful life that has separated them from God, and then allows Jesus to take control of their life.
34  Then they said to Him, "Lord, give us this bread always."
Even though Jesus keeps telling these people who He is, the miracles seen, and that by believing they can have eternal life, they refuse to admit that Jesus is the one that can provide this. They continue to try without Jesus, which is impossible! This is the reason for all the man devised religions in the world, as well as each individual’s homemade religion and personal way of Salvation.
Many in the world, when asked the question concerning Christ and Eternal Life, will respond by saying, “Yes I believe,” but then proceeding with some self belief ignoring the Bible.
35  And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
People eat bread to satisfy physical hunger and to sustain physical life. We can satisfy spiritual hunger and sustain spiritual life only by a right relationship with Jesus Christ. Just as bread must be eaten to sustain physical life, Christ must be invited into our daily walk to sustain spiritual life. The Word of God is the bread we need to feed on each day. If we don’t know the Word of God and what it teaches we will always be led by our fleshly wants and desires down that wrong path that takes us away from God.
36  But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe.
Jesus is referring back to what He said previously in John 5:40 But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. This all goes back to the fall of Adam and Eve and why these people wouldn’t believe Jesus, and people of today also won’t believe. They were both deceived by Satan and this deception was handed down to us through no fault of our own. Deception is still present today causing the majority of people to believe a lie and not the truth. We have a choice to believe the Word of God or the word of the world.
37  All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.
All that the Father gives Me; This refers to all whoever they may be, whether Israelites, Gentiles, Pharisees, scoffers, harlots, drug addicts, adulterers, etc. No one is turned away!
God enables those who do believe, He draws them to Himself by His Word and Holy Spirit; “He opens their hearts to understand the Scriptures Acts 16:14; and He grants to them repentance, Acts 11:18; 2Titus 2:25.
Will come to Me; This phrase is stating that they would come to Him because they believed on Him. To come, implies our need of help like being ill and needing a physician. We go to them because we have confidence that he can help us overcome our illness, we trust the doctor. The sinner comes to Jesus feeling that he is poor, and needy, and wretched, and casts himself on His mercy, believing that he alone can save him.
And the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out; Everyone that comes, that is, everyone that comes humbly and feeling that he is a lost and ruined sinner. This invitation is open to anyone that will come. It shows the unbounded mercy of God; and it shows, also, that the reason, and the only reason, why men are not saved, is that they will not come to Christ. Of any sinner it may be said that if he had been willing to come to Christ he might have come and been saved. As he chooses not to come, he cannot blame God because he saves others who are willing, no matter what their sins are, and they are made partakers of everlasting life.
38  For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
Jesus' purpose was to do the will of God, not to satisfy His human desires. We should have the same purpose.
Jesus came as part of God’s plan of salvation. He gives hope to the lost that there is something more spectacular than what we are living here on earth. It is through Him that we can come to for this Blessed Hope, and only Him.
39  This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.
This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing; Meaning everyone who believes in Him, or all who become Christians.
Jesus affirms here that He will grant those that remain faithful eternal life whether alive or dead. The thought being is the Christian will die; his body return to dust; yet he will not be destroyed. The Redeemer will watch over him, though in his grave, and keep him till the resurrection of the just. This is affirmed of all who are given to Him by the Father, everyone that believeth on him shall have everlasting life.
Note: With the human trait of choice whether saved or not saved, it does not mean that once a person is saved they are always saved. Just as we have a choice to come to God, we also have a choice of leaving God.
But should raise it up at the last day; Meaning the Day of Judgment. The Jews thought that the righteous would be raised up at the appearing of the Messiah. Jesus directs them to a future resurrection, and declares to them that they will be raised at the last day, the Day of Judgment.
It is also believed and affirmed by some Jewish writers the wicked would not be raised. Therefore, to speak of being raised up in the last day was the same as to say that one was righteous, or it was spoken of as the special privilege of the righteous. Here Jesus debunks another Jewish belief that doesn’t set well.
40  And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day."
Simply put, anyone that sees or reads of the miracles Jesus performed, and believes in Him will have eternal life, and will be raise up on the last day. What a guarantee this is, alleluia! Those who put their faith in Christ will be resurrected from physical death to eternal life with God when Christ comes again (1 Colossians 15:52; 1 Thessalonians 4:16).
41  The Jews then complained about Him, because He said, "I am the bread which came down from heaven."
This verse tells us the people completely understood what Jesus was saying, but didn’t believe a word of it. They were murmuring which was one of the greatest sins of the Jewish people dating back to the wandering in the wilderness. The next verse tells us why.
42  And they said, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, 'I have come down from heaven'?"
How Jesus was to come was all recorded in Isaiah. Had they known Isaiah 7:14, they would have understood the manner of His Birth; had they known Isaiah 9:1–2, they would have known that it had been prophesied that the home of Jesus would be Galilee; had they known Isaiah 61:1, they would have known the type of Ministry the Messiah was to have, which Jesus was fulfilling totally. These people were not of the Word, even though they claimed to be; consequently, they did not know Him, because they did not know what the Word said about Him.
43  Jesus therefore answered and said to them, "Do not murmur among yourselves.
Being all knowing Jesus knew what they were thinking and saying. Their murmuring showed their disapproval and rejection.
44  No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
The thought is that all initiative toward Salvation is on the part of God toward the sinner and not from the sinner himself. Without this “drawing of the Father,” which is done by the Holy Spirit, no one could come to God, or even have any desire to come to God. When God see a person seeking the truth with their heart, He will draw them with the power of the Holy Spirit.
Again Jesus states for the 3rd time in this chapter, He will raise up Born Again Saints on the last day.
45  It is written in the prophets, 'AND THEY SHALL ALL BE TAUGHT BY GOD.' Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.
Jesus was alluding to Old Testament , books of the Prophets, in which all people are taught directly by God (Isaiah 54:13; Jeremiah 31:31-34). He was stressing the importance of not merely hearing or reading, but learning and believing. We are taught by God through the Bible, our experiences, the thoughts the Holy Spirit brings to us, and relationships with other Christians. Are you open to God’s teaching? Do you live by all of what the Word of God states?
“Shall be all taught by God”, this explains the previous verse. It is by the teaching of his Word and Spirit that men are drawn to God. This shows that it is not compulsory, and that there is no obstacle in the way but a strong voluntary ignorance and unwillingness.
Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
