Psalms 91:1-16 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust." Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked. Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place, No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot. "Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation."
Father God I ask that you bless all that read these messages and to bless their loved ones. Let your words change hearts. Bring others to your message via the internet. In Jesus name I pray. Amen!
Revelation 2:12-17 NKJV
So far we have studied two churches, Ephesus and Smyrna. Ephesus had lost their first love and Smyrna was a poor church suffering persecutions. Please keep in mind as you study these seven churches that it is possible when John wrote this book some of these churches may have been on the right track, but what Jesus is warning about is what was coming in the future. This week the church of Pergamos is the study, and it definitely has some problems like killing one of Jesus faithful servants within the church, a city of cults, idolatry, and also believing and teaching false doctrine. The study of this church also touches on some early church history and the lesson ends with a white stone with a name written on it. So let’s get started.
12 "And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write, 'These things says He who has the sharp two-edged sword:
And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; Pergamos was about 65 miles north of Smyrna. The city of Pergamum was built on a hill 1,000 feet above the surrounding countryside, creating a natural fortress. It was a sophisticated city, a center of Greek culture and education, with a 200,000-volume library. But it was also the center of four cults, and it rivaled Ephesus in its worship of idols. The city's chief god was Asclepius, whose symbol was a serpent and who was considered the god of healing. People came to Pergamum from all over the world to seek healing from this god. (LASB)
Pergamos represents the state church, the head of the church intertwined with the head of government. This time period references a span of 300 to 500 A.D. As history unfolds the facts, Constantine was in conflict with rivals for the imperial throne. He had a dream, in which a Cross appeared in the sky with the words, “In this sign conquer.” Constantine promptly followed the suggestion from the dream, united with the Church, converted to Christianity, and immediately became an active member. With the defeat of Maxentius it resulted in him being the emperor of the Roman Empire. He then declared freedom of religion and gained great influence in the church. He and the head of the church at that time, Roman Sylvester I (Some history info refers to Sylvester I as a Pope or Bishop.) had a close relationship and their reigns were of the same time frame. Due to doctrinal controversies prevailing in the Church, Constantine convened the first conference at Nicea, Bithynia, to settle the issues involved, which dealt chiefly with the nature of the Person of Christ. Constantine is also referred to by some history info as being declared a saint based on mans standards.
With all that was happening in this time frame one has to ask themselves, was God’s hand in all that was going on, which it was, but were the leaders (religion and government) being led by the Holy Spirit like the Apostles, or their human carnality?
These things says He who has the sharp two-edged sword; The sharp two-edged sword that comes from Jesus mouth is the Word of God that separates spirit and soul. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Ecclesiates_12:11; Isaiah_49:2
13 "I know your works, and where you dwell, where Satan's throne is. And you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.
I know your works, and where you dwell; Jesus states he knows where they dwell, meaning their works and what the works pertain to, works of the flesh or works of the Gospel, He knows all things we can’t hide anything from Him. He even knows our deepest secrets which will be all brought out in front of everyone at some point in time, unless we are washed by His shed blood. He also knows where each of us dwells spiritually.
Where Satan's throne is; There were some in this church that were clinging to the Cross and remaining faithful, but within this church were those of Satan. Satan had taken up residence within this church and was causing division within the congregation. Satan loves to do this because it causes havoc within the church. Bickering and conflicts arise which results in the church body having to deal with these things instead of what they are suppose to be doing. This causes the people to take their eyes off of Jesus and focus on the conflict. Unless one is saved they live for Satan based on God’s Word. John_8:44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
This same thing happens to us also as individuals. Satan or our flesh will plant an idea in our head and then we begin questioning its validity. It could be something that would cause us to start doing research and the more research we do the more confused we become. It could last for a minute or two, days, or weeks. Depending on our knowledge of Scripture the time frame varies, but Scripture will tell you where the thought came from and its validity. During this time of research, if the timeframe is lengthy, other thoughts will enter one’s mind, and before you know it you start questioning multiple things that you know the answer to but are too engulfed in the research you aren’t thinking logically. Eventually you come to realize what is going on and you return to the finished works of the Cross, Jesus. When you come back to Jesus all of a sudden everything is clear and after repentance, peace sets in. Satan is a master at deception and he will do anything to get us to take our eyes off of Jesus.
And you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells; There were some in this church that knew the truth of the Gospel and were standing firm in their beliefs. Antipas was one and as a result was killed by those in the church claiming to be God’s children, but in reality belonged to Satan. Antipas was standing up against the false doctrine that was within the church, as verses 14 and 15 reveal. In reading history of this time period one finds many doctrinal issues being disputed and if we claim to be Born Again Christians, then we are to stand up and claim Jesus name. 1 Peter 4:14 If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified.
14 But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.
Rearranging this verse into these words, helps us to understand what Jesus is saying. “I have a few complaints against you. You tolerate some among you whose teaching is like that of Balaam, who showed Balak how to trip up the people of Israel. He taught them to sin by eating food offered to idols and by committing sexual sin.” Jesus is using the doctrine of Balaam as an example to the church of Pergamos in pointing out they were committing spiritual adultery. It wasn’t that they were eating things sacrificed to idols, and committing sexual immorality, but it was the doctrine being introduced by some causing others to sin. Spiritual adultery is when a Christian is married to Christ and he should be looking to Jesus for everything, but is functioning or falls back to functioning under law. In other words he is married to Christ but not fully trusting in Jesus. Paul gives an example of this in Romans 7:1-4 Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives?  2 For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband.  3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man.  4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.
15 Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.
The verse before was referring to doctrine and so does this verse. This verse isn’t saying the deeds of the Nicolaitans, but doctrine, unscriptural doctrine. “Nikao” means “to conquer,” and “laos,” means “people,” from which comes the English word “laity,” therefore “laity-conquerors.” What this doctrine was or what would be brought forth in the time frame of 300 – 500 A.D. we don’t know, but one thing for sure is, Jesus didn’t and doesn’t approve of it because of it being false and unscriptural. Based on the breakdown of Nicolaitans, it was doctrine that would control and conquer the laity and it could be much doctrine to pull one away from Jesus. The church of Pergamos was or would become the Roman State church which was a combination of Church and State controlling the people. We do know that Constantine and Sylvester I were both Romans and became very close. The question raised in my mind is, was the Roman Government and Sylvester I collaborating and proposing doctrine that was not scriptural? History doesn’t say much about Sylvester I accomplishments, but Constantine is mentioned quite often in his involvement of church business and structural contributions like the Basilica of St. John Lateran, Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, St. Peter's Basilica, and several cemeterial churches over the graves of martyrs.
16 Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth.
Jesus is warning the people of this church to separate themselves from this false doctrine and repent or He will deal with the matter and place judgment upon them. They are to do it quickly before all are infected with the doctrine and led astray. That is, he would give the order, and they would be cut as if by a sword. Precisely in what way it would be done he does not say; but it might be by persecution, or by heavy judgments. To see the force of this, we are to remember the power which Christ has to punish the wicked by a word of his mouth. By a word in the last day he will turn all the wicked into hell. (Barnes)
17 "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it."
To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat; Jesus is telling all churches and us as individuals to be scriptural. If we identify and overcome sin and false doctrine, He will give us manna from Heaven to eat, meaning Himself, He is the Bread of Life! For us to overcome we must be educated in what Scripture means, and stay focused on the Finished Work of the Cross.
Why is Jesus referring to it being “hidden manna”? It is hidden because we being human beings and born with the inherited sin nature from Adam, the truth of the sin nature is hidden, but when we seek Jesus and the truth earnestly, and give our heart to Jesus, we are then fed the Bread of Life, Jesus, manna that will sustain life, eternal life.
And I will give him a white stone; The significance of a white stone is that it was used in ancient times in casting a vote of not guilty. To put it in terms for us to understand, if our present day juries were issued a white and a black stone at the beginning of a trial, then at the conclusion of the trial they would cast a white stone if the person was innocent or a black stone it they were guilty. When a person comes to know and understand the truth of the Gospel and they repent, and accept Jesus as their Saviour, they are given a white stone with a name on it to be presented to God as one of His children. White stands for pure and righteousness without spot or blemish, in God’s eyes, because they are covered by the shed blood of Jesus Christ. It is a Born Again Saints ticket into Heaven provided they keep their eyes focused on Jesus.
And on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it; when a person accepts Jesus as their Saviour they are given a new name. This name is a mystery not defined so only speculation can be assumed. Is it a name that reflects our works here on earth; our love for Jesus; our commitment to Him; our new Born Again state that will be manifested in Heaven with a glorified body that will be in harmony with the perfect renewal of our being? We don’t know but one thing for sure is, it is a good thing!
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ,
for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes…...
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Last Week’s Trivia: Who was Ahikam?
Answer: Ahikam was an official in King Josiah’s court. Ahikam was one of those sent by Josiah to Huldah the prophetess to ask for advice when the book we now call Deuteronomy was discovered during renovation in the Temple. Some years later, he protected Jeremiah from mob violence. He was also remembered as the father of Gedaliah, whom Nebuchadnezzar appointed as governor of Judah. 2 Kings 22; 2 Chronicles 34:20; Jeremiah 26:24; 39:14; 40:5-16

Psalms 90:1-17 A Prayer Of Moses the Man of God. LORD, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. You turn man to destruction, And say, "Return, O children of men." For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it is past, And like a watch in the night. You carry them away like a flood; They are like a sleep. In the morning they are like grass which grows up: In the morning it flourishes and grows up; In the evening it is cut down and withers. For we have been consumed by Your anger, And by Your wrath we are terrified. You have set our iniquities before You, Our secret sins in the light of Your countenance. For all our days have passed away in Your wrath; We finish our years like a sigh. The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Who knows the power of Your anger? For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath. So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom. Return, O LORD! How long? And have compassion on Your servants. Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy, That we may rejoice and be glad all our days! Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us, The years in which we have seen evil. Let Your work appear to Your servants, And Your glory to their children. And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us, And establish the work of our hands for us; Yes, establish the work of our hands.
Father God, we give you all the Glory, Thanks, Praise, and Honor. I ask that you bless all of those that read these messages around the world and to bless their loved ones. Open our hearts to comprehend your words, our ears to hear your words, and our minds to be changed from any false beliefs to the truth that lies in your words. I ask that the truth that is in your words of the Bible penetrate the heart of all that read it and hearts will be changed and made new. In Jesus name I pray. Amen!
Revelation 2:8-11 NKJV
Last week we studied about Ephesus and this lesson will cover another church. Were you able to relate personally to the message to the church of Ephesus? Do you do a lot of good deeds and helping with church functions, and no time in prayer or studying the Word of God? Have you lost your first love?  What about modern day churches? Do you know of any churches that devote all their time to doing good deeds for the community and raising money for the church, and forget about teaching through Bible Studies and holding prayer meetings, if so, they have lost their first love? Let’s see what messages Jesus has for the churches and us in this lesson. We will be studying the church of Smyrna this week.
8  "And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write, 'These things says the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life:
The angel referred to here is the pastor of the church of Smyrna and the First and the Last; who was dead and came to life, is of course Jesus our Saviour. Smyrna was located north of Ephesus, it was nicknamed "Port of Asia" because it had an excellent harbor on the Aegean Sea. It existed in the time frame of approximately 100 A.D. to 325 A.D.
9  "I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are rich); and I know the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.
I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are rich); This church was doing good works and because of their good works they were suffering persecution from their fellow Jewish kinsman. Every true believer will suffer some type of persecution from unkind words in the USA, to death in other parts of the world. If one has never experience any type of persecution, then one must ask, why? Am I walking and talking what I believe or just saying I’m a Christian with head knowledge, and not heart knowledge?
Good works of course is referring to spreading the Gospel and doing what needed to be done out of love for Jesus, not to earn Godly merit. This church was also poor and struggled making ends meet, but this was only in the physical realm of earthly life. Jesus tells them they are rich, meaning rich in spiritual rewards that they would someday be able to cash in. If they keep their eyes on the finished work of the Cross they will be rewarded when they leave this earth. So, do your riches lie in worldly matters, material things, fleshly pleasure, things that will be left behind, or in the rewards of God’s Heavenly Kingdom?
Remember these are messages to our modern day churches also. How does the church you attend fit in with what Jesus is saying? Is it doing good works, is it being persecuted for standing up for the Gospel, is it using its financial resources to help the needy of their parish, is it reaching out to the lost and unsaved with Bible Studies and Evangelism, is it showing love to other denominations that claim Jesus to being their Saviour, etc,? If not, which of these seven messages pertain to the church that you attend?
And I know the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan; What Jesus is saying here it that God doesn’t consider Jews who reject Christ as being a true Jew. In other words they belong to the church of Satan. Substitute the word Christian in place of Jew and now this verse applies to us. Many people claim to be Christians but only with words. Their heart is far from Christ just as the Jews that wouldn’t believe in Jesus. So a self proclaimed Christian that lives a life of foul language, using God’s name as a common ordinary word without meaning, always wanting more in life, using drugs, etc., are deceiving themselves into thinking they belong to Jesus church, but in reality belong to the synagogue of Satan. James 1:26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is useless. Mark 7:6 He answered and said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: 'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR FROM ME  Galatians 6:3-5 For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.  4 But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.  5 For each one shall bear his own load. Hmmmm, these are very strong words from Jesus and the Apostles. I know a lot of churches only preach the loving side of Jesus, but it is out of love that these things are being said by Jesus and the Apostles. They are actually calling their kinsman hypocrites and any one that proclaims to be a Christian with lips only, as hypocrites. Again I must ask, where is your faith, is it grounded in the finished works of the Cross, do you give it all to Jesus, or is it in worldly matters and yourself to get through life here on earth?
10 Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer; Jesus is forewarning the church of what was coming and He is speaking of the time frame that the church was entering, that being 100 A.D. to 300 A.D. The country was under the rule of the Romans and the geography of the Roman Empire was basically all of the inhabited land. All the churches of this time period would suffer great tribulation, but the churches that fall into the same category of the Church of Smyrna would suffer greater persecutions due to their faith.
Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested; We have talked about the testing of our faith in past lessons and here it is again. God allows these things to happen to see if we will stand fast and true. God doesn’t want phony people in Heaven with Him he wants true believers. These tests can produce many results depending on what is going on in our life at the time. These tests could be in the form of something happening to a nonbeliever to bring them to Jesus; they could be something in a new believers life to keep them on the straight and narrow; they could be for a seasoned believer to show him where he is failing an losing their first love; they could be to see if we honor with our hearts and not our lips. There are many different results and many different trials as we go through life, and what we need to be aware of whenever things happen to us, is that it isn’t coincidence, luck, or bad luck because God is in control and He allows things to happen to us in hopes that we will sit up and take notice and come to Him for all of our needs. We need to ponder these things that happen to see if God is trying to tell us something.
You will have tribulation ten days; This phrase may mean one of several things which we don’t know for certainty of what. It is possible Jesus is talking of one being thrown in prison and a trial lasting 10 days resulting in death; it could refer to a ten day testing like other passages in the Bible like, Daniel 1:12 "Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. Gen_24:55; 1Sa_25:38; Dan_1:14; more than likely it is referring to the trials and tribulations the church would face from 70 A.D to 325 A.D. In 70 A.D. the temple was destroyed by the Roman government and from that time to approximately 325 A.D. the church endured ten major persecutions from the Roman government. Just go on the internet and you can discover some of these persecutions by following the early leaders and believers lives which normally ended with death.
These persecutions came to a close with the Roman Emperor Constantine legalizing Christianity around 312 A.D. and then in 323 A.D. he declared it to be the religion of the empire in other words the State Church. With this declaration the persecutions stopped, but where did all the true believers go? Just because Constantine legalized Christianity that doesn’t mean all became true believers, it merely means that the killings ceased. I’m sure the true believers still suffered trials and tribulation from their kinsman and some probably ended in death, but the bad times were over.
Now that you know a little about the history of the early true believers, then why do we have so many religions today that proclaim they are the true religion/church? Could it be that those in charge of church matters, put into place there human beliefs, and not God’s Holy Words after Constantine’s declaration? Did the Roman Government assign roles and positions in the State Church. Was this the birth of the Roman Catholic Religion? Did all other religions evolve from the Roman Catholic Religion, if so, why did people branch off and start new religions? Did Satan realize he wasn’t having any success in destroying all true believers, so he changed his tactics? I believe this is what is going on then and now. He couldn’t destroy all from the outside so he is doing it from the inside through religious denominations, by diverting people away from the Gospel of Truth, the Word of God, and Jesus by getting people to know Jesus with head knowledge and not heart knowledge. Many Religions/denominations of today have their own books of doctrine made up of human thoughts and reasoning’s of faith that contradict what God’s Bible states. They also teach from books other than the Bible. Many religions are using psychology like, speak it into existence, and if it feels good it’s ok. By this means, one is taking their eyes off of Jesus and what He did on the Cross for us and placing their faith in self. If a religion doesn’t use the Bible as their only means of doctrine, and their doctrine contradicts God’s Word, then that denomination is living by false doctrine.
Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life; If we remain faithful until we die then we will receive the crown of life, eternal happiness. This statement from Jesus refutes the belief that if one is saved they will have eternal life and they can’t lose it. Speaking from my experience I believe if one is truly saved and has experienced a change in one’s lifestyle, as the Bible teaches, then it would be very difficult to fall from God’s grace, but I also believe a person can fall from God’s grace if they so desire. Just as it is a person’s choice to give their heart to Jesus and live by His doctrine and not mans doctrine, they can also decide to go back to their old lifestyle. This is why we have free will, we can live for Jesus, His kingdom, and eternal life, or to please our self here and now, that will end with death, eternal pain, suffering, and torture. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.  25 And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.  26 Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air.  27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.
11 "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death." '
Here again Jesus is telling us to do a reality check in what we are believing in and practicing. If one realizes they are listening, believing, and practicing false doctrine, meaning what is not substantiated in the Bible, they need to turn from that doctrine. If a person does this and comes to Christ, they will be overcomers and not spend eternity in Hell. The second death is referring to non-believers, they will have a physical death and then a spiritual death, Hell. In other words one can be born twice (physical birth and spiritual birth) and die once (a physical death with spirit going to Heaven) or born once (physical birth only) and die twice (physical and spiritual death resulting in Hell). John 3:3-7 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."  4 Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"  5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.  6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.  7 Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ,
for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes…...
Psalms 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Psalms 89:38-52 But You have cast off and abhorred, You have been furious with Your anointed. You have renounced the covenant of Your servant; You have profaned his crown by casting it to the ground. You have broken down all his hedges; You have brought his strongholds to ruin. All who pass by the way plunder him; He is a reproach to his neighbors. You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries; You have made all his enemies rejoice. You have also turned back the edge of his sword, And have not sustained him in the battle. You have made his glory cease, And cast his throne down to the ground. The days of his youth You have shortened; You have covered him with shame. Selah How long, LORD? Will You hide Yourself forever? Will Your wrath burn like fire? Remember how short my time is; For what futility have You created all the children of men? What man can live and not see death? Can he deliver his life from the power of the grave? Selah Lord, where are Your former lovingkindnesses, Which You swore to David in Your truth? Remember, Lord, the reproach of Your servants How I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples, With which Your enemies have reproached, O LORD, With which they have reproached the footsteps of Your anointed. Blessed be the LORD forevermore! Amen and Amen.
Father God, we give you all the Glory, Thanks, Praise, and Honor. I ask that you bless all of those that read these messages around the world and to bless their loved ones. Open our ears to hear your word, our minds to be changed from any false beliefs, and our hearts to accept and believe the truth that lies in your words. I ask that the truth that is in your words, the Bible, will change hearts and they will be made new. In Jesus name I pray. Amen!
Revelation 2:1-7 NKJV
In Chapters 2 & 3 Jesus is addressing the pastors of the seven churches. The messages that he is giving holds true for the modern day churches and if we look deep into the messages we can recognize our own beliefs, actions, lost love, misguidance, self works, etc. Each and every one of us, at some point in our life has lived this way regarding the finished work of the Cross and may still be living this way. If one is living in such a lifestyle and doesn’t know it, then ask the Holy Spirit to unlock you heart so these messages of the seven churches, minister to you.
1  "To the angel of the church of Ephesus write, 'These things says He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands:
As stated last week the angel of the church is the pastor, priest, minister, or simply put the one that is the leader of a church congregation. He who holds the seven stars and walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands is Jesus Christ.  Jesus is the head of the true church, not meaning denominational churches, but the body of people that have given their heart to Jesus, those that believe with their heart and not their mind. Those that have confess with an open mouth their commitment to Jesus, just like a bride and groom openly confess their love and commitment to each other on their wedding day. It is a vow that comes from the heart and not the mind. If it is a vow from the heart it will most likely stand the test of time, but if it is just from the mind, then most likely when hardships comes along the vow doesn’t mean anything and distance will come between the couple, or separation could be the results. The same holds true with a relationship with Jesus Christ. If we make a commitment with only our mind then the things of the world, our flesh, and Satan can pull us away from Jesus very easily. This is what was happening in this church of Ephesus that Jesus was addressing, in particular with the leader. Colossians 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
2   "I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars;
Jesus starts out complimenting the church of Ephesus. He states He knows indicating His omniscience (knowing all things). He compliments them on their works, labor, and patience of the spreading of the Gospel; their standing up and opposing the evilness that lies in the hearts of the unsaved; the testing of those that claim to know the truth and come preaching and teaching lies. How is it that they knew the truth and could discern true apostles? It is because the Spirit of God was living within them. John 8:47 He who is of God hears God's words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God." John 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. These people were students of the scriptures and only students of the Bible can tell the difference of what is being said, truth or lie.
Satan has done a wonderful job in pulling people away from the truth of the Bible by keeping us busy, inspiring denominations to teach from anything other than the Bible, inspiring us to read anything other than the Bible, telling us we only need to hear a couple verses of the Bible on Sunday, telling our flesh that when we hear the truth not to believe it, because pleasing our flesh is what it’s all about, etc., etc., etc. This is all work of Satan to keep us ignorant of the teachings of God that is in the Bible. If we don’t know what the Bible teaches then how are we suppose to know the truth? If we depend on our own logic we will be lead in the wrong direction by our sinful flesh which is the works of Satan due to the inherited sin nature from Adam and Eve. Ok, so about now you are thinking, Bill, how do I know what I’m reading from you is true? There’s a few ways of knowing; one, read and study the Bible; two, read John 8:47 above and if your spirit agrees, you will not get conviction; three, if you don’t agree with what I say then research until your spirit tells you the truth and then believe, but don’t go to man, priest, pastor, minister, etc. and seek the truth, seek the truth from the Bible and ask the Holy Spirit to help you. If you don’t know how to do research in the Bible then ask someone that does, to show you how to use concordances, verse references, Greek and Hebrew definitions, bible software search capabilities, etc. If you have conviction of what I say and don’t seek the truth, and believe in what your logic tells you, your flesh will lead you astray, because your flesh is sinful and of Satan. Read and study material that is backed up with Bible verses and then make sure the verses support what is being said. Some people take verses out of context to fit their lifestyle, so read several verses before and after the quoted verse to make sure of the relevancy. Matthew 7:7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name's sake and have not become weary.
The believers of Ephesus were stead fast in their pursuit of spreading the Gospel, they endured the trials associated with the Gospel, and they worked with great diligence, but lost sight of Jesus.
Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.
Could you see this coming, the build up with compliments and then the down side? Paul used this in Romans, he would build up his fellow brethren and then he would pull the rug out from under them. We also have experience this many times in our life, pertaining to employment evaluations; parents telling us how good we are but don’t do that anymore; pastors telling us how good we are but ending with how sinful we are in God’s eyes, etc.
This verse can be perplexing after the previous two. It sounded like this church was doing everything correct, so what’s going on?
It isn’t that they lost their love for Jesus, but they were in the process of leaving their first love. They still loved Jesus, but looking back to the two previous verses you will get the idea of what Jesus is talking about. Their new found love that they had found when they were saved; the zeal in their hearts from their Spiritual Birth; the assurance that they had been forgiven of their sins through the death of Jesus on the Cross, was fading. They were so involved with church matters their focus was on the physical things of the church and not on Jesus like it was when they were saved. They were taking their focus off of the Cross and placing it in fleshly works. They were in the process of leaving their newfound love with each passing day. This is why the letter was addressed to the pastor of the church because he is the one that is in charge of keeping the flock on the right path. A pastor, priest, or minister is to teach the truth of the Bible and keep the congregation going in the right direction. Woe to those that don’t do this.
Here is how that works, which is of Satan, and it is so gradual one can get led astray without even knowing it. Take Exodus for example, when God was coming down on Pharaoh, the parting of the sea, the manna from Heaven, the water from the moving rock, etc. the Israelite’s all believed, praised, and worshiped God. In each instance when some time elapsed from those events their flesh started questioning things, they started murmuring, complaining, starting rumors, etc., and as a result, started drifting from God and focusing on their wants and desires and how they could satisfy their cravings themselves, instead of looking to God for the answer. They left their first love!
Another example of losing first love is marriage. When a man and woman fall in love and get married their new found love and being together is one of great magnetism. They love being together as much as possible. They shower each other with praise and affection, but as time goes on that passion of love fades, even though they still love one another very much. The zeal of being constantly together diminishes and sometimes causes one or the other or both to focus their attention in another direction and if left uncheck, could result in separation. They left their first love!
This is the same for new Born Again believers. They rejoice at their newfound forgiveness and life through the forgiveness of their sins. As days pass they lose sight of the seriousness of sin, and begin to lose the thrill of their forgiveness. 2 Peter 1:9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. In the beginning of a newborns life, they have enthusiasm without knowledge. With the passing of time the knowledge comes and then the enthusiasm fades. What do you have now, knowledge without enthusiasm? Both are necessary if we are to keep love for God intense and untarnished. (Hebrews 10:32 But recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: Hebrews 10:35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward.) Have you left your first love?
Work for God must be motivated by love for God, or it will not last. If one is busy with church matters, who is the benefit for, themselves and the community, trying to do good deeds to win favor with God, or out of love for God? This motivation that drives us is a very important thing to know, because this is what was going on with the church of Ephesus and what Jesus is warning them, our modern day churches, and us as individuals about. Our God is a jealous God! He wants our full attention. God states this fact with the first couple commandments that He has given us. Exodus 20:3-5 "You shall have no other gods before Me.  4 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;  5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
5    Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.
Remember therefore from where you have fallen; This phrase is referring to how the people of the church of Ephesus had fallen from Grace. They stopped depending on Jesus and the finished work of the Cross and their pastor was blind to what was happening. Galatians 5:4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.
Repent and do the first works; Repent, repent of what? Repent of falling away and doing works of the flesh and come back and do works out of love for Jesus. Jesus is telling the pastor/church of Ephesus to refocus on Himself and the finished work of the Cross and do works to glorify God and His Kingdom. Not for pride or so one can say I did this or that at church or so one doesn’t brag about always doing something for the church to gain recognition. These are all the wrong reasons to do works, because they are works of the flesh and must be repented of. Jesus was humble and so must we to receive His Grace. 1 Peter 5:5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE." James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. Proverbs 22:4 By humility and the fear of the LORD Are riches and honor and life.
Or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent; Jesus states it pretty plain here that if one strays away He will remove the lampstand. Jesus is the source of light and what He did for us on the Cross is the means of salvation, and if we forsake Him and start living to please ourselves, then He will remove the light of eternal life. From what we can tell the Church of Ephesus did not repent and the candle stick was removed and the church died based on historical facts.
6   But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
The leaders of the Nicolaitans believed and taught that you could be saved and still have the freedom to exercise such things as promiscuous sexual intercourse with women, and making offerings to idols and eating of the offerings. These church leaders led their people into sin and not away from sin. This is what God hates and so did the church of Ephesus.
7    "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God."
Jesus is making a statement that if one strays from the truth and recognizes they are heading down the path to eternal Hell, then repent, and come back to Him and He will restore eternal life to them. We are to keep our ears open at all times and tuned to the Spirit of God for guidance in this life. If we hear something we are doing wrong, whether from the Holy Spirit or from another person, then we are to let that enter our ears, travel to our mind, and settle in our heart in the form of repentance.

Psalms 89:25-37 Also I will set his hand over the sea, And his right hand over the rivers. He shall cry to Me, 'You are my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation.' Also I will make him My firstborn, The highest of the kings of the earth. My mercy I will keep for him forever, And My covenant shall stand firm with him. His seed also I will make to endure forever, And his throne as the days of heaven. "If his sons forsake My law And do not walk in My judgments, If they break My statutes And do not keep My commandments, Then I will punish their transgression with the rod, And their iniquity with stripes. Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not utterly take from him, Nor allow My faithfulness to fail. My covenant I will not break, Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips. Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David: His seed shall endure forever, And his throne as the sun before Me; It shall be established forever like the moon, Even like the faithful witness in the sky."
I ask that the truth that is in your words of the Bible penetrate the heart of all that read it and hearts will be changed, made new. In Jesus name I pray. Amen!
Revelation 1:9-20 NKJV
Jesus arrives on the scene in the rest of this chapter and John gives us a detailed description of Jesus, what He looked like, sounded like, and tells us who this book is addressed to. With the description John gives us it is a bit frightful and would cause anyone to fall at His feet, but the loving kindness that Jesus has for his children comes through when He tells John not to be afraid. We also do not have to fear Jesus if we have had a Spiritual Birth.
I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ; John is making a statement of introduction and in this statement he mentions several things that all believers go through. Tribulation, kingdom, and patience, as a believer one will go through trials and tribulation in the testing of our faith. As a believer one will know there is a Heavenly Kingdom without a doubt and will experience little things like the beauty of God’s creation; flowers, natural scenic wonders, the intricate shape of a snowflake, etc.; they will have a peace, comfort, joy, and completeness in their spirit, and sense what Heaven will be like; they know that one day they will experience the presence of His Glory. Some of these little wonders we may have never paid attention, or much attention to before being saved, but now they bring on a whole new dimension of wisdom and knowledge. As a believer we will be patient and willing to serve our Almighty God here on earth while we await our departure from this earth. We are patient knowing that we have eternal life being one of God’s children. All of this is made possible because our faith is in Jesus Christ and what He did on the Cross for us. John mentions these three things in his introduction because he is experiencing these with his exile. He has no anxieties, depression, anger, or anything of his humanistic character, because he is at total peace being a child of God and trusting in Jesus. John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."  2 Timothy 3:12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. Acts 14:22; Col. 1:24
Was on the island that is called Patmos; Patmos is one of the clusters of islands in the Aegean Sea. It lies between the island of Icaria and the promontory of Miletus. It is some six or eight miles in length, and not more than a mile in breadth, being about fifteen miles in circumference. It has neither trees nor rivers, nor has it any land for cultivation, except some little nooks among the ledges of rocks. On approaching the island, the coast is high, and consists of a succession of capes, which form so many ports, some of which are excellent. The only one in use, however, is a deep bay, sheltered by High mountains on every side but one, where it is protected by a projecting cape. The town attached to this port is situated upon a high rocky mountain, rising immediately from the sea, and this, forms the only inhabited site of the island. Though Patmos is deficient in trees, it abounds in flowery plants and shrubs. Maize and barley are cultivated, but not in a quantity sufficient for the use of the inhabitants. About halfway up the mountain there is shown a natural grotto in a rock, where John is said to have seen his visions and to have written this book (Albert Barnes).
For the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ; John was exiled to this island because of his preaching the Gospel of the New Covenant.

I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day; This vision, trance, or out of body experience took place on the first day of the week, Sunday. John states he was in the Spirit meaning that he was in deep prayer and the Spirit of God fell upon him. We have a record of Peter experiencing such a state also. This occurrence of Peter is recorded in the Book of Acts Acts 10:10 Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance. You can go to Acts and read more about this experience of Peter’s. He also, was in a state of prayer when this occurred to him. Paul also experienced this and you can read more about it starting with; 2 Corinthians 12:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a one was caught up to the third heaven.
These visions or experiences still happen today to those that have a close personal relationship with Jesus. They aren’t spoken of due to the non-belief of people today. When these things are talked about, people to think the person is crazy, in fact the modern day churches would think the same also. If a person wishes these experiences then they need to be in the Word of God and Prayer almost constantly.
And I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet; John is telling us that Jesus voice was as loud and clear as a trumpet. The trumpet has been used for its loudness and sharpness over the centuries. It has been used to call people together for an announcement, to be called into and out of battle, bring a gathering of people to attention, etc. It is the best description John could have used for the people of his time and ours.

11  saying, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last," and, "What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea."
John is getting his instructions from Jesus and these instructions are to the seven churches of Asia Minor. These churches were located in what we know as Western Turkey. Why only these seven churches? Could it be because of their state of being and straying away from what was taught them when they were started? We will see in Chapter 2. These churches are to be an example of what Jesus has to say to the other churches of that time and also to the churches of our time. There were many churches at that time already started, but due to the sin nature and Satan, the people started veering from the truth because of their interpretation of Scripture. You ask, how can this be that the churches of John and the other Apostles be veering from the truth already? Stop and think about the persecutions and killing of those preaching the gospel at that time. The people didn’t like what Jesus had to say and the same was true for the followers of Jesus. Anyone teaching and preaching the truth of what the Scriptures say, people don’t want to hear or believe. They will be shunned, persecuted, or killed. This holds true for today also in our local communities. Start a conversation about the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a room of people and within minutes the room will be cleared because people don’t want to hear the truth, they only want to believe in their upbringing and religion, because their flesh tells them they are right and the Bible is wrong. People are being beaten, tortured, and killed today for preaching the Gospel. Look at the American Pastor Saeed that has just been convicted and sentenced to 8 years in one of the most brutal and deadly Iranian prisons this past week because he will not deny Jesus.

12  Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, (The seven gold lamp stands represent the seven churches Jesus is addressing.)
13  and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man,(Jesus is the head of the church, the bridegroom, the one that orchestrates all things.) clothed with a garment down to the feet (Indicating a garment of splendor, something a king would wear.) and girded about the chest with a golden band.(Apparel a High Priest would wear.)
14  His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, (White symbolizes purity, spotless, without sin, authority, and majesty.)  and His eyes like a flame of fire; (Eyes that pierce the hearts of humans to see what truly lies in their heart, God or man.)
15  His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, (His feet were so bright and brilliant they appeared as molten metal from a fiery furnace. So bright they were blinding to look at, indicating His holiness, his holiness of walking on this earth in the form of man without sin.) and His voice as the sound of many waters; (His voice wasn’t such that it was hard to understand, but it was one of authority, one of clarity, one that could be understood by anyone that it was spoken to, one that would call anyone to attention, that would hear it.)
16  He had in His right hand seven stars, (The stars are explained in Verse 20 and represent the angels of the Seven Churches. The word “angels” as it is used here, in the Greek is “aggelos,” and means “messenger.” So in a sense this is referring to the Pastors of the Seven Churches, and the message that will be delivered by the angel of that church.) out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, (A two edge sword is designed to cut both ways; and such a sword penetrates no matter how it moves. This is the way it is, of what comes from Jesus mouth. It is the penetrating power of truth no matter how it is said. It will cut right to the heart penetrating our soul when we are guilty.) and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.(Jesus is the light of the world. He was so bright Johns eyes could not bear the brightness; a brightness so bright, that it signifies strength, glory, and purity.)

17  And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. (The countenance of God is so great it causes those in His presence to fall. Sometimes scripture states a touch took place and then the person stood up. It’s possible these people actually fainted and a touch from God brought consciousness back to the individual, we don’t know. This was experienced by many throughout the Bible. It is the Spirit within us that causes this action to take place, whether it is fear, muscle weakness, the absence of breath, awe of God being a supreme being, or a combination of several that causes one to fall down. Peter, James, and John experienced this up on the mountain when Jesus was transfigured and God spoke to them from a cloud. Matthew 17:6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid. Daniel 8:18 Now, as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep with my face to the ground; but he touched me, and stood me upright. Daniel 10:17 For how can this servant of my lord talk with you, my lord? As for me, no strength remains in me now, nor is any breath left in me." Exodus 33:20; Isaiah 6:5; Ezekiel 1:28; Ezekiel 43:3; Daniel 10:7-9) But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, "Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. (A hand that can life one up, give life, or sweep life away.)
18  I am He who lives, (Jesus is not only alive, but life for all who believe. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.)   and was dead, (In human form Jesus died in our place on the Cross, He became sin for us, our sins were nailed to the Cross, He did this for us because He loves us so much.) and behold, I am alive forevermore. (Jesus rose from the dead, he defeated Satan, and because of this work of the Cross, we can have eternal life by believing in this act and admitting we are sinners by nature, repenting of our sinful nature, asking God for forgiveness, and ask Jesus to come into our lives.)  Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death. (This verse, directly from Jesus, is proof there is eternal life after physical death and there is a Hell. For anyone that believes a person just sleeps when they die, then they need to read this verse every day until it sinks into their heart.)
19  Write the things which you have seen, (Refers to the vision in Chapter 1.)  and the things which are, (Refers to the state of the churches in Chapter 2.) and the things which will take place after this. (Refers to future events described in Chapters 3-22 when this Church Age comes to a close.)
20  The mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, (Messengers to the pastors of the churches.) and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches.

Last Week’s Trivia: Who was Agabus?
Answer: Agabus was a Christian prophet from Jerusalem. Agabus went to Paul in Antioch in 44 A.D. and predicted a famine. Some years later, perhaps 59 A.D., Agabus warned Paul that he would be imprisoned if he went to Jerusalem. In spite of Agabus warning, Paul went and was seized. Acts 11:28; Acts 21:10.
This week’s Trivia: Who was Agag?
