Proverbs 6:24-35
24  To keep you from the evil woman, From the flattering tongue of a seductress.
25  Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, Nor let her allure you with her eyelids.
26  For by means of a harlot A man is reduced to a crust of bread; And an adulteress will prey upon his precious life.
27  Can a man take fire to his bosom, And his clothes not be burned?
28  Can one walk on hot coals, And his feet not be seared?
29  So is he who goes in to his neighbor's wife; Whoever touches her shall not be innocent.
30  People do not despise a thief If he steals to satisfy himself when he is starving.
31  Yet when he is found, he must restore sevenfold; He may have to give up all the substance of his house.
32  Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; He who does so destroys his own soul.
33  Wounds and dishonor he will get, And his reproach will not be wiped away.
34  For jealousy is a husband's fury; Therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35  He will accept no recompense, Nor will he be appeased though you give many gifts.
Father God, open our eyes, mind, and heart to your Gospel. Reveal to us our sinfulness and self sufficiency so that we can repent and come to you, our Good Sheppard. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of I Peter 3:1-6 NKJV
Peter is still on this road to submission, first it was government, then masters, and now husband and wife. This could get to be a sensitive subject for some as I’ve observed in group conversations. Let me make this statement that what I’m about to say is in general and not the absolute concrete written in stone. Depending on circumstances, there are exceptions based on scripture. So let’s get started because I feel I will run out of room even though it is only six verses.
1 Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives,
Wives, likewise; Peter starts this chapter out with “wives, likewise”. What he is referring to is the submission that he has written about concerning masters and government officials. Everything he has said in the previous chapter pertains to wives being submissive to their husband because God’s prescribed order is that men are suppose to be head of their family just as Jesus is the head of the Church.
Be submissive to your own husbands; Now let me say this, there are men that show no leadership whatsoever of their household and in situations like these the wife usually steps forward and leads the family, but in situations of this type it should be discussed between husband and wife on who will lead and an agreement made. It is chaos when both husband and wife lead which cause disputes and dissention in the marriage.
What exactly is Peter talking about and why would he be writing on this subject? He is addressing a saved wife and an unsaved husband. The next two phrases tell us that and it also fits right in with the last chapter. When a saved person lives a life modeled after Jesus, their good conduct will be noticed and bring some to the Cross in repentance. This is what Peter is telling us that a saved wife may bring their husband to the Cross in repentance by her conduct.
LASB: When a man became a Christian, he usually would bring his whole family into the church with him (see, for example, the story of the conversion of the Philippian jailer in Acts 16:29-34). By contrast, a woman who became a Christian usually came into the church alone. Under Roman law, the husband and father had absolute authority over all members of his household, including his wife. Demanding her rights as a free woman in Christ could endanger her marriage if her husband disapproved. Peter reassured Christian women who were married to unbelievers that they did not need to preach to their husbands. Under the circumstances, their best approach would be one of godly behavior: They should show their husbands the kind of self-giving love that Christ shows the church. By being exemplary wives, they would please their husbands. At the very least, the men might then allow them to continue practicing their faith. At best, their husbands would join them and become Christians, too.
That even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives; When Peter wrote this letter Christianity was new and probably in many instances women would accept the Gospel before their husband. In these situations Peter is advising that a wife conducting her life in a Godly way, may have more influence on the husband than preaching to him. This also holds true for today.
2 when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear.
The word chaste here (ἁγνὴν  hagnēn) refer’s to purity of conduct in all respects to the conduct of the wife.
The word fear refers to the fear of God in the proper respect and reverence wives are to have of their husbands, Ephesians 5:33. The fear of God meaning obedience to God’s prescribed order of life whether it be wife or husband. Wife and husband are to respect and reverence each other within a marriage, but the husband is the head of the household.
3 Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel—
Do not let your adornment be merely outward; Albert Barnes quotes: The apostle refers here to a propensity which exists in the heart of woman to seek that which would be esteemed ornamental, or that which will appear well in the sight of others, and commend us to them. The desire of this is laid deep in human nature and therefore, when properly regulated is not wrong. The only question is, what is the true and appropriate ornament? What should be primarily sought as the right kind of adorning? The apostle does not condemn true ornament, nor does he condemn the desire to appear in such a way as to secure the esteem of others. God does not condemn real ornament. The universe is full of it. The colors of the clouds and of the rainbow; the varied hues of flowers; the plumage of birds, and the covering of many of the animals of the forest; the green grass; the variety of hill and dale; the beauty of the human complexion, the ruddy cheek, and the sparkling eye, are all of the nature of ornament. They are something superadded to what would be merely useful, to make them appear well. Few or none of these things are absolutely necessary to the things to which they are attached; for the eye could see without the various tints of beauty that are drawn upon it, and the lips and the cheeks could perform their functions without their beautiful tints, and the vegetable world could exist without the variegated colors that are painted on it; but God meant that this should be a beautiful world; that it should appear well; that there should be something more than mere utility. The true notion of ornament or adorning is that which will make any person or thing appear well, or beautiful, to others; and the apostle does not prohibit that which would have this effect in the wife. The grand thing which she was to seek, was not that which is merely external, but that which is internal, and which God regards as of so great value.
Let not this be the main or principal thing; let not her heart be set on this. The apostle does not say that she should wholly neglect her personal appearance, for she has no more right to be offensive to her husband by neglecting her personal appearance, than by a finical attention to it. Religion promotes neatness, and cleanliness, and a proper attention to our external appearance according to our circumstances in life, as certainly as it does to the internal virtue of the soul.
Arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel; The point Peter is making here is that outward beauty is not what is to be adorned, but the adorning of the soul is what is important, and a more permanent adorning. Our outward appearance will one day fade away, but the beauty of the soul will live forever in Heaven, if we are a child of God. We are to dress decently, and in the manner that will not attract attention and we are to show that our hearts are interested supremely in more important things than in outward adorning. It is what’s within us that God cherishes; submission and reverence on a wife’s part toward her husband is what God looks at, not our outward appearance.
4 rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.
Rather let it be the hidden person of the heart; Peter is referring to the natural hidden nature of our heart. We know what God’s Laws are, Ten Commandments, and we take aim in trying to abide by them which is the natural, obvious, and usual mode of denoting the feelings of goodness. In obedience we ascend to the divine Law with emotions of sensible delight in the observation of them.
Within our heart we truly want to please God, but our inherited sin nature hampers our obedience to God. Psalm 1:2; 19:7-11; 119:97 all talk about loving the Law and meditating on God’s Law. Job states this; Job 23:12 I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth More than my necessary food.
The great apostle Paul struggled with this very thing, of wanting to do what was right according to God’s Commandments, but found himself violating them. Read Romans Chapter 7 and you will see what I’m talking about. This is why we have to repent of our lifestyle and ask Jesus to come into our heart to rule and reign us. We can’t do it ourselves because of the sin nature, we will fail miserably; we have a human nature not a divine nature. Being Born Again, a Spiritual Birth is the answer to Heaven. John 3:3
With the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit; The thought is; that whatever pertains to outward decoration, however beautiful and costly, they will fade away; but that which pertains to the soul is enduring. As the soul is immortal, so all that tends to adorn it will be immortal too; as the body is mortal, so all investments to adorn the body outwardly will decaying, and be destroyed.
When some people spend huge sums of money to have their bodies surgically altered, body tattoos, or piercings to look more attractive they are living for themselves and the world, not God. Now don’t get me wrong, it is ok to present ourselves decently, but not to draw attention to ourselves.
Which is very precious in the sight of God; As stated previously, a gentle and quiet spirit is what pleases God.
5 For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands,
For in this manner, in former times; Peter is speaking of OT times here.
The holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves; Some of the women of the OT truly trusted in God. They had their hope in God and eternal life not on the things of the world. They were truly devoted and trusting in God and adorned their souls with a meek and quiet spirit, particularly by respecting their husbands.
Being submissive to their own husbands; This was evidently a characteristic of the early periods of the world pertaining to wives. Devoutness and respect was the norm no matter what the dealings were shown toward them, and so it should be based on God’s way, just like government and master obedience, provided it doesn’t violate God’s Law. Peter uses the next verse as an example of what he is talking about.
6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror.
As Sarah obeyed Abraham; Peter is now going back to the scriptures of the OT and calling to mind Sarah, Abraham’s wife, as a role model for the wives of his current time.  We don’t know a lot about Sarah but there is a couple verses in the OT that tells us she was obedient to Abraham. We don’t see anything about her being outwardly adorned. Genesis 12:5 Then Abram took Sarah his wife and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. Genesis 18:6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quickly, make ready three measures of fine meal; knead it and make cakes.” She didn’t refuse to leave her home land or make cakes for their visitors.
Calling him lord; The word lord has the elementary idea of ruling and was common for the head of the family to be referred to as lord by wives and servants of Abraham’s days.
Whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid with any terror; This phrase Peter is encouraging wives to be a model of Sarah, and if they can do good, like Sarah, they would be considered daughters of Sarah. The last part of this verse refers to following Sarah’s footsteps without fear of being criticized and ridiculed by others. Sarah was a holy and upright person and when a Christian leads a righteous life, they are persecuted at times. Just like current times, Christians are harassed and sometimes killed for standing up for the name of Jesus.
Just as I thought I have run out of room so we will start with verse seven next week which starts out with Peter addressing the conduct of husbands.

Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Sinners Prayer; Pray this, and if you believe it with your heart, Jesus will save you!
“Lord Jesus I know I am a sinner.  I confess my sins to you; I am sorry for my sins; I repent (Meaning, desiring to turn from a sinful lifestyle.) of all my sins, and I am asking for your forgiveness.  I believe that only you can forgive sin.  I commit my life to you and ask you to come into my heart, direct, and take charge of my life.  I believe that you died to set me free from my sinful lifestyle and you rose from the dead to give me eternal life, and right now you are seated at the Right Hand of God Almighty. I believe you are the Son of God; the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life, and my Savior.”  I believe this and have faith you will make a new person out of me, by sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in my heart and lead me in a new life. In Jesus name I pray Amen.”

Proverbs 6:12-23
12  A worthless person, a wicked man, Walks with a perverse mouth;
13  He winks with his eyes, He shuffles his feet, He points with his fingers;
14  Perversity is in his heart, He devises evil continually, He sows discord.
15  Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly; Suddenly he shall be broken without remedy.
16  These six things the LORD hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
17  A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood,
18  A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil,
19  A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.
20  My son, keep your father's command, And do not forsake the law of your mother.
21  Bind them continually upon your heart; Tie them around your neck.
22  When you roam, they will lead you; When you sleep, they will keep you; And when you awake, they will speak with you.
23  For the commandment is a lamp, And the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,
Father God, open our eyes, mind, and heart to your Gospel. Reveal to us our sinfulness and self sufficiency so that we can repent and come to you, our Good Sheppard. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of I Peter 2:18-25 NKJV
This week’s lesson moves from respecting government authority to servants being obedient to their masters. Servants were very common in Peter’s day and no doubt formed a class of people, and of course with masters being human with the inherited sin nature, some were cruel to their servants. So Peter points out to his audience the proper conduct a servant is to have toward their master regardless of his actions.
18  Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh.
Servants; This term servant covers many different people like; assistant, attendant, cleaning person, dependant, helper, hireling, server, slave, etc. We know there were slaves in Peter’s time, but with the synonyms listed what Peter has to say pertains to us also. We could add to the list employees because if you work for someone or some business we are classified as a hireling, assistant, attendant, or helper.
Be submissive to your masters with all fear; We are called to be obedient to our supervisors just like a slave is to be obedient to their master, or like a Christian is to be obedient to God. As servants whether slave, employee, or child of God, we should have a reverent fear of offending those in control. They have authority over us, and we should be afraid to incur their displeasure.
We have all seen people in the workplace that are disrespectful of supervisors. These people will argue and disagree with everything management sets forth. Some will complain in meetings, some constantly complain all day about anything and everything, some will be silent during meetings but as soon as the meeting is over they get whoever will listen, huddled up and then run down the management. Peter is telling us to be submissive to authority. I truly believe a Born Again Christian makes a good employee because of what the Bible teaches and they try with their heart to obey what the Word of God teaches.
Not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh; Peter is stating something here that our human nature finds hard to swallow. It is easy to obey the good and gentle authority but the cruel and inconsiderate authority is another story because of the sin nature within us. Anyone who is a servant or employed by a harsh master/employer is to perform their duty with fidelity no matter what the character is of the master as long as the relationship continues. We are to conduct ourselves as Christians if we call ourselves Christians no matter what the character is of the authority in charge.
Does this mean that we are to obey without complaining even if the rules command us to do unsafe tasks. No, if situations arise of this nature then the person or a group of people need to discuss the situation with supervisors, but in a respectful way. A demonstration of the hazard may need to be done without anyone getting hurt to get the point across. One thing to keep in mind and that is, you agreed to the terms of employment when you accepted the offer of the employer. You are to abide by the company rules and regulations. If you find that you can’t abide by the policies or immoral things are transpiring, then it is up to you to remove yourself from that employment.
19  For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully.
Let’s rephrase this a little; For God is pleased with you when you do what you know is right and patiently endure unfair treatment.
For this is commendable; Why would this be commendable? It would be commendable because a person that conducts their life in a Christlike manner glorifies the Father.
If because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully; Take this phrase and think of Jesus when He was taken custody and stood before Caiaphas the high priest and then before Pilate. He was submissive, humble, non-argumentative, with those before Him. He was obedient to His Father and conducted His actions in a holy manner.
Put yourself in Jesus place, could you conduct yourself as He did? Stop and ponder this and then think, has there been situations in your life where you feel you were treated unfairly by your supervisor or the management; were false accusations brought before you; did you have to suffer some type of consequences like no pay increase, if so, did you conduct yourself like Jesus or a little child? Yes things like this in our life come up from time to time and is very difficult, but view it as something that God is teaching you to make you a better person. If we call ourselves a child of God, we are to endure wrongful suffering like Jesus did, then we will shine in God’s eyes and we will also be a Jesus beacon to those around us.
20  For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God.
For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently; We are to stand up and accept punishment for our wrong doing. This seems to be a difficult thing to do, because usually as soon as someone is accused of something, there is an excuse and blame is shifted elsewhere. It is our sin nature that causes this because each of us view ourselves as a good person, always knowing what to do. When we endure punishment for our mistakes, we need to accept it with a mindset of patience and a learning experience. Look at Adam he shifted the blame to Eve when God confronted him about eating the fruit. As soon as they ate of the fruit the sin nature kicked in. Genesis 3:6-12 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.  7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.  8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.  9 Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?"  10 So he said, "I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself."  11 And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?"  12 Then the man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate."As a true Christian aren’t we suppose to be honest, does actions of shifting blame promote trustworthiness?
But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God; What Peter is telling his listeners and us is that if we are falsely accused of wrong doing and suffer punishment, then we are to accept it in a patient manner.
Have you ever been with a group of people doing something that would result in some type of punishment if caught, or in your place of employment and some employee does something that causes the management to change or institute a new rule and all have to abide? This is what Peter is talking about, even though you may not have been involved in the incident or to blame, but you have to suffer the consequences of an individual’s actions. When this happens we are to accept the change in policy or punishment graciously and not grumble and murmur about it. By doing this we are commendable before God and modeling His Son Jesus.
21  For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:
For to this you were called; God called us out of the world and when this happened, we, as Born Again believers are commissioned to go proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. By conducting our lifestyle modeled after Jesus, the unsaved will notice and possibly come to the foot of the Cross.
Because Christ also suffered for us; Jesus suffered and died a terrible death for us and never complained one time. He was innocent, pure and spotless, yet died in our place to defeat the sin nature so that we can place our faith in His sacrifice and resurrection to break the bondage of the sin nature that binds us.
Leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps; Jesus footsteps are our example to follow, even when suffering punishment unjustly.
22  "WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH";
"WHO COMMITTED NO SIN; Was it possible for Jesus to sin? This question has raged from the time of Christ unto the present. However, the Scripture makes it very clear that Christ came as the “Last Adam” (1 Corinthians 15:45 And so it is written, "THE FIRST MAN ADAM BECAME A LIVING BEING." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.). That being the case, He had to have the same potential to sin as the first Adam, or He could not have been the proper fulfillment and Saviour for us. He could have sinned, but the facts are, despite all of Satan’s temptations, He didn’t sin. What the first Adam failed to do, the Last Adam did do—render perfect obedience to God. What the first Adam did do, the Last Adam did not do—sin.
NOR WAS DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH"; The KJV uses the word guile instead of deceit. Guile refers to craftiness or trickery, there was none found in His mouth.
23  who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously;
Who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; Jesus was reviled; accused of being a rebellious man; spoken of as a deceiver; charged with being in league with Beelzebub, the “prince of the devils” and condemned as a blasphemer against God. he did not revile those who had reproached him. He asked that justice might be done. He demanded that if He had spoken evil, they should bear witness of the evil and that is where He stopped. He used no harsh language. He showed no anger. He called for no revenge. He prayed that they might be forgiven. He calmly stood and bore it all, for he came to endure all kinds of suffering in order that he might be an example for us, and to make atonement for our sins.
When He suffered, He did not threaten; When he suffered injustice from others in his trial and in his death, he did not threaten punishment. He did not call down the wrath of heaven. He did not even predict that they would be punished; he expressed no wish that they should be, but asked the Father to forgive them fore they knew not what they were doing.
But committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; Jesus was obedient to our Heavenly Father and committed Himself to the Fathers will. He may have had some other thoughts and desires, but fully committed Himself to God’s will and not His. Matthew 26:39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will."
This is another example we must strive to do and that is God’s will and not our wants and desires.
24  who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree; Who Himself refers to Jesus. He bore our sins on the Cross, no one else sacrificed their life for us as atonement for our sins. Hebrews 1:3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
That we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness; When we have a Spiritual Birth we become dead to sin because the Holy Spirit takes up residence within our heart. With the help of the Holy Spirit we have the capability of resisting sin. Just as Jesus died on the Cross, our old nature dies when we are saved and we start a new spiritual driven life abiding in Jesus just as His resurrection gave Him a new spiritual life, which guarantees us a perfect, spotless righteousness life in God’s eyes. Romans 6:3–5
By whose stripes you were healed; The thought is that Jesus was scourged or whipped in our place to bring about spiritual healing for us because our faults. By faith we see the bruises inflicted on him, the black and blue spots made by beating; we remember that they were on account of our sins, and not for his; and the effect in reclaiming us is the same as if they had been inflicted on us.
This sacrifice Jesus did for us made it possible for us to be healed spiritually by placing our faith in the Cross of Christ and being Born Again.
25  For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
This verse is referring to a life we all live prior to being Born Again. It is a life of depending on self and not Jesus our Saviour. We were lost but have found eternal life through Jesus our Saviour.

Proverbs 6:1-11
1  My son, if you become surety for your friend, If you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,
2  You are snared by the words of your mouth; You are taken by the words of your mouth.
3  So do this, my son, and deliver yourself; For you have come into the hand of your friend: Go and humble yourself; Plead with your friend.
4  Give no sleep to your eyes, Nor slumber to your eyelids.
5  Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, And like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6  Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise,
7  Which, having no captain, Overseer or ruler,
8  Provides her supplies in the summer, And gathers her food in the harvest.
9  How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep?
10  A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep—
11  So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, And your need like an armed man.
Father God, give us strength in these perilous times to remain faithful to your will and not ours, in Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of I Peter 2:11-17 NKJV
This week’s lesson is about Godly living in verses 11 and 12 and verses 13-17 are pertaining to submission to Rulers, Kings, and Presidents, in other words government authority. We are in a time of not respecting authority whether it be law enforcement, government officials, rulers, etc. It seems where discord is with authority, there are demonstrations and some demonstrations have eventually overthrown government officials or turned violent. Is this how we are to act as a believer of Jesus Christ? Scripture tells us this will happen as we come closer to the return of Jesus.
11 Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul,
Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims; This phrase of this verse reinforces what the introduction stated that Peter’s letter is to Jewish brethren that are scattered throughout Asia Minor or Turkey. “Beloved”, when used in the Bible in most cases refers to believers and since the next verse talks about Gentiles we know Peter is addressing Jewish believers. These brethren are new to the area of Asia Minor therefore Peter refers to them as sojourners meaning a temporary residence. Some of the people escaping the persecution that was taking place in Jerusalem would travel and stop here and there for a short period of time. Some would set up a permanent residence therefore being referred to as pilgrims. When America was discovered and people started coming here they were referred to as pilgrims because they were strangers in a strange land. Many times when the term pilgrim is used it denotes someone in a new land in order to practice religion freely, and that is exactly what these people were doing.
It is also very possible that Peter referred to them as sojourners because they were followers of Christ and that their true home was not here on earth. We are sojourners here on earth. This isn’t our true home, Heaven is our true home. We are here for only a short part of our life, a part of our life that will determine where we will spend eternity.
Abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul; Why would Peter give this warning of abstaining from fleshly lusts? Well it doesn’t matter whether it is 4,000 years ago or today. When a person relocates to a new place it is easy to get caught up in different cultures, religions, and lifestyles. Just take a look at some of the things that took place in the OT. The Israelites got swayed into allowing some of the people that God said to kill to live, as a result some of them started worshipping foreign idols. These are the things that war against the soul and turn into fleshly lust. Some of the people of the OT were told not to marry with gentiles but they did because of fleshly lust. Another example of worldly lust this time of year is when teenagers go off to college for their first year. They are in a strange surrounding and the lust of the world pulls them into doing things they wouldn’t do at home. The world pulls and tugs at our soul when we are in a different environment. So we have to abstain and have our guard up at all times to ward off the darts of the Devil. Romans 13:4 For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. 2 Timothy 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Titus 2:12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.
One other thing this verse tells us is that the sin nature is still present within a Born Again Christian, even though they are dead to it, it is still there and will cause a believer to sin from time to time. Romans 6:11-12 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.  12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.
12 having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.
This verse sounds like Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles; This phrase is referring to two things; the first is honorable conduct meaning lifestyle; a Godly lifestyle. The second thing is who is being referred to with the term Gentiles. This isn’t referring to Jew and non-Jew distinction, but to believers and non-believers.
As Matthew 5:16 above states we are to live a lifestyle modeled after Jesus so that we are an example to those around us that are not saved. This type of lifestyle is a testimony to others what Jesus has done in our life. Gracious, godly, and pleasant behavior on the part of Christians could win some of the unsaved critics to the Lord.
That when they speak against you as evildoers; The non-believers of Peter’s time, and today, spread vicious lies about Christians. The non-believing Jews and Gentiles did not think highly of believers resulting in slanderous persecution and sometimes death. Believers were considered evildoers.
Times haven’t changed much in 2,000 years, even today when a believer speaks of the Gospel people are turned off and what goes on in their mind is this person is a Jesus fanatic. If we knew the true news around the world, a believer of Jesus is probably killed each day for their faith.
They may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation; At some point in time a non-believer may come to you and want to know why you act the way you do; or ask what do you have that I don’t have; or you are different than other people. This inquiry is because the light of Jesus beams from a Born Again Christian through their actions and speech, and at that point the Holy Spirit has opened the door for the Christian to share the message of the Cross with them. Don't write off people because they misunderstand Christianity; instead, show them Christ by your life. The day may come when those who criticize you will praise God with you.
The day of visitation is referring to the Church Age which is what we are living in presently.
13 Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake, whether to the king as supreme,
14 or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good.
Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake, whether to the king as supreme; Verse 13 and the first part of 14 is telling us that we are to submit ourselves to civil laws that are instituted by government whether it be Federal, State, County, Township, City, etc. This isn’t the only place in the NT that we are commanded to submit to authority. Jesus first stated it in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke; Paul preached it in Romans, and it is also recorded in Titus. Matthew 22:21; Mark 12:17; Luke 20:25; Romans 13:1-7; Titus 3:1
So with what is going on in the world today are we to submit and support laws that go against God’s Word, like murdering babies and same sex marriage? Absolutely not! If government institutes immoral laws and votes them in, we don’t abide by them, in fact we as the church need to voice our opinion to our Congressman/woman that it is wrong and not to support such laws. If everyone that calls themselves Christians would flood Washington D.C. and State government with letters opposing the murdering of babies (abortion) and same sex marriage, maybe these immoral laws would not become law. Do you write, email, or call your Congressman opposing bills before they become law? If not, are you a true child of God or just go with the flow of the world?
In Peter’s time thousands of Christians laid down their lives, with Peter even being one of them, simply because they refused to say that “Caesar is Lord.” As stated, if laws are passed which violate the Word of God, the Christian cannot obey such laws; however, in such a case, we must be prepared to pay the price, even as the Early Christians did.
So what do we submit to? It is things like taxes, traffic ordinances, police officers, court rulings, etc. What about religious denominational hierarchy? Have you ever noticed in the NT that there was no hierarchy in the early church? Churches were established by Paul and other disciples and they guided them along spiritually through letters, but there was no rank. Sure the people appealed to the Apostles for guidance, but each church stood alone. So what Peter is referring to when he states to submit to “every ordinance of man” is civil laws. Verse 17 tells us what to do pertaining to the Church.
Or to governors; Governors meaning subordinate officers appointed by the chief magistrate over provinces.
To those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers; This is referring to the King sending out his servants to uphold the law and punish evildoers. In Peter’s time this is referring to the Roman government. It is the duty of a good and vigilant ruler to see that his province be peaceable and quiet. He should to make diligent searches for sacrilegious persons, robbers, man-stealers, and thieves, and to punish everyone according to their guilt.
And for the praise of those who do good; Just as it is a ruler’s duty in any governing body to seek out evil doers, he also has the duty to give thanks to those that are law abiding citizen.
15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men—
For this is the will of God, that by doing good; The will of God is to do good if one is a child of His. God commands us to love our neighbor, forgive when we are offended, be helpful with good works, etc. We are to live a life of uprightness and benevolence to be an example to those around us. By living according to the will of God, a Christian is an asset to any country and community.
You may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men; Peter uses the term “ignorance of foolish men”. In Peter’s day non-believers would bring the Christian believers before courts charging them with untrue charges just like they did with Jesus. They would make up charges out of Christianity ignorance because they didn’t understand the change a person would go through being Born Again. So what Peter is telling us here is the best way to combat Christianity ignorance is to do good in speech and actions so as to not cause a non-believer to speak evil of you.
To put this into perspective lets use a so called peaceful demonstration that goes wrong. In these demonstrations many would claim to be Christian, but in words only. The demonstration starts out fine, but something may happen or someone may start getting the people all fired up by saying things that may or may not be true and the next thing you know the demonstration is out of control and property is being damaged or destroyed, fighting occurs, rocks and bricks being thrown, etc. This is not the will of God to conduct our lives like this; this is not being a Christian. If a true Christian participates in something like this, then how can they put to silence the foolish men? Titus 2:7-8 in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility,  8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.
16 as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God.
As free; Peter is referring to the freedom a believer experiences that comes with salvation.
Yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God; This is referring to salvation also meaning that some in Peters day and also current times believe as long as they are saved they are free to do as they please, and use their liberty as a cloak for sin. Many times people think that as long as they said a prayer and went through some type of ritual they are saved. These people only repented with their mind and not their heart, and no change was found in them so they go on living as usual. We are to be servants of God doing good. Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
17  Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
Honor all people; Show them the respect if honor is due to them according to their personal worth, and to the rank and office which they hold.
Love the brotherhood; Pertains to the whole group of Christians; true believers. If we truly love God we will love our brothers and sisters.
Fear God; Meaning in a reverent way. Anyone that fears God will not dishonor their brethren or civil authority.
Honor the king; Meaning respecting the office whether it be King, Ruler, President, etc. It does not mean to worship, only Jesus deserves our worship.

In Jesus name I pray Amen.”  (John 3:16,17; Romans 3:23; 6:23; 5:8; 10:9-13; Ephesians 2:8-10; 1 John 5:11-14; 1:6-10) (Sin: Rom. 1:22-32; Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 5:3-7)
