Psalms 136:13-26 To Him who divided the Red Sea in two, For His mercy endures forever; And made Israel pass through the midst of it, For His mercy endures forever; But overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea, For His mercy endures forever; To Him who led His people through the wilderness, For His mercy endures forever; To Him who struck down great kings, For His mercy endures forever; And slew famous kings, For His mercy endures forever—Sihon king of the Amorites, For His mercy endures forever; And Og king of Bashan, For His mercy endures forever—And gave their land as a heritage, For His mercy endures forever; A heritage to Israel His servant, For His mercy endures forever. Who remembered us in our lowly state, For His mercy endures forever; And rescued us from our enemies, For His mercy endures forever; Who gives food to all flesh, For His mercy endures forever. Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven! For His mercy endures forever.
Father God, we exalt and magnify You! Your mercy endures forever and we are so grateful for that. Bless us and our loved ones, and open our hearts to your Word. We pray and ask for this in Jesus name, Amen!
Book of Hebrews 7:20-28 NKJV
Before I get started with this week’s lessons I want to make sure something is clear that was stated in last week’s lesson. A statement was made that when Jesus died on the Cross the New Covenant commenced and the Old Covenant died. Under the New Covenant we live by faith, therefore the laws of the Old Covenant are dead, done away with. Some questions have been raised and some people are thinking the Ten Commandments were abolished by this statement. In a sense they were for a believer, because a Born Again Christian lives by faith and relies on the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to guide them in all they think, say, and do. It is the Holy Spirit within that brings on great conviction in a believer and keeps him living a holy life, although being sinners that we are, the believers will still stumble from time to time and sin and then be so remorseful, because of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, they will go to the Lord, repent, and ask forgiveness.
The Laws of the Old Covenant was actually made up in three parts, the Civil, the Ceremonial, and the Moral laws. The Moral Laws are the Ten Commandments, and these are just as alive today as they were 4,000 years ago. Even today the Ten Commandments are designed to point an individual toward God and salvation. When a person accepts Jesus as their Saviour, Jesus sends the Comforter (Holy Spirit) to the person. When we repent and ask Jesus to forgive us, our body becomes a temple of God where the Holy Spirit takes up residence and starts guiding the newly born Saint. 1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 2 Corinthians 6:16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM. I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE." A truly Born Again person lives by faith in Jesus totally comprehending what and why Jesus had to come to earth and sacrifice Himself for us, and then believe with all their heart that Jesus rose from the dead and ascended to Heaven where He is seat at the right hand of God Almighty. So in a sense do you see that a child of God that lives by faith doesn’t need to worry about the Ten Commandments, because if their faith is where it is suppose to be, in the works of the Cross, and the Holy Spirit will guide them? Are the Ten Commandments alive? Yes and No.
The other two parts of the Old Covenant, Civil and Ceremonial, were definitely done away with. When the veil was ripped open it was a sign that we no longer needed a priest to intercede for us, and this is the point that Paul is trying to get the Hebrew people to see and understand. 1 John 2:1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. There was no longer a need for the rituals the priest performed whether it is Paul’s era or today, because with the veil being removed we can go directly to Jesus for all that we need. Scripture tells us He is our advocate and only He is our advocate between us and God because Jesus is our High Priest just like the high priest of the Old Covenant were that interceded for the people. Jesus replaced the Levitical priesthood system and all of the ritualistic ceremonies.
I hope this clears up the confusion because I don’t want someone to go around quoting me that the Ten Commandments were abolished and it is ok to live a life of sin by breaking them. They aren’t, they are alive today, although with today’s society and worldly events, you might think different.
So let’s get into this week’s lesson.
20  And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath
This verse and the next verse go together, but I want to address this verse by itself. You have to read the next verse to understand what is being said and if you don’t it can lead a person astray. “He” is referring to Jesus, and He was made a High Priest by God. God took an oath that Jesus, our  High Priest, would last for eternity because Jesus is eternal. The priests of the Levitical order were only temporary because when they died their priesthood ended. There was no oath, they were appointed from man by man into the high priesthood through the Civil Laws of the Jewish people. This shows the inferiority of the Aaronic Priesthood to that of Melchizedek. What God says is true and will last forever without any changes.
Jesus was made a Priest due to the fact of what He did, in being sinless and offering up Himself as a Sacrifice. This means that He was not always a Priest, but became such, because of His atoning Work at the Cross.
A Priest, in the truest sense of the word, is a mediator between God and men; however, he is a mediator only by the virtue of blood sacrifice that he does. Jesus, by offering up of Himself as a Sacrifice, which means that He did it willingly and freely, and done on behalf of mankind, which in fact no other priest could do, placed Him in a position unequaled in the chronicles of human history.
21  (for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him: "THE LORD HAS SWORN AND WILL NOT RELENT, 'YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK' "),
(for they have become priests without an oath; This is referring to the Levitical priests.
But He with an oath; This is referring to Jesus becoming our High Priest.
By Him who said to Him: "THE LORD HAS SWORN AND WILL NOT RELENT, 'YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK' "); The first part of this phrase, “by Him”, is referring to God. This quotation from the Old Testament we have studied, but I want to point out the word, “relent”. Relent is defined as; not giving in or changing one’s mind; yielding, giving up, surrendering, or take a softer stance. What is said by God is true and steadfast without compromise and it will come to pass and last forever.
As human beings many times we say things that we really don’t mean and often people tend to change their mind. We all probably know people like this or have experienced change in the workplace. Some workplaces it seems that each day brings change. As human beings we are fickle and tend to change our minds, but God is steadfast in His word and when God gives His Word, it will not change. He is the same today as He was yesterday, and will remain the same. In fact this is the third oath in this epistle that God has declared. 1) An oath of not entering His rest in Hebrews 3:11 So in My anger I took an oath: 'They will never enter My place of rest.'" 2) An oath of consolation in Hebrews 6:18 So God has given both His promise and His oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. 3) An oath of consecration in Hebrews 7:20-21 This new system was established with a solemn oath. Aaron's descendants became priests without such an oath,  21 but there was an oath regarding Jesus. For God said to Him, "The LORD has taken an oath and will not break His vow: 'You are a priest forever.'" Our God is immutable, in other word unchangeable.
22  by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.
This verse is telling us that what Jesus did on the Cross for us so that we can live by faith and not by keeping the law is much better. The law had to be kept 100% of the time. If one fails in one aspect of the law they fail in all of the law. So it is humanly impossible to keep the law perfectly. Living by faith is much better, therefore a better covenant.
The key word in this verse is “surety” meaning guarantee. Surety declares the New Covenant is a guarantee and will remain forever. We don’t have to worry about it being forever, because God proclaim that Jesus is a Priest according to the order of Melchizedek, which is for eternity.
23  Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing.
Also there were many priests; This phrase is referring to the Levitical priests. There were many of them from the time span of when the Levitical priesthood was instituted with Aaron being the first till Jesus death on the Cross.
Because they were prevented by death from continuing; As stated previously the Levitical priesthood was only temporary and pointed to the ultimate sacrifice for us, Jesus Christ.
24  But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood.
But He; He meaning Jesus.
Because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood; Jesus is eternal and will be our High Priest/King now and for eternity. He is the Alpha and Omega! He is God and the Son!
Revelation 1:8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end," says the Lord God. "I am the One who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One." Revelation 21:6 And He also said, "It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life. Revelation 22:13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."
25  Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
No one can add to what Jesus did to save us; our past, present, and future sins are all forgiven (Provided we keep our faith in the Works of the Cross), and Jesus is with the Father as a sign that our sins are forgiven. As our High Priest, Christ is our Advocate, the mediator between us and God. He looks after our interests and intercedes for us with God. The Old Testament high priest went before God once a year to plead for the forgiveness of the nation's sins; Christ makes perpetual intercession before God for us. Christ's continuous presence in heaven with the Father assures us that our sins have been paid for and forgiven (see Romans 8:33-34; Hebrews 2:17-18; Hebrews 4:15-16; Hebrews 9:24). This wonderful assurance frees us from guilt and from fear of failure.
26  For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens;
For such a High Priest was fitting for us; Jesus was and is the type of High Priest that we needed. Being God, He was perfect in all aspects, therefore it was only fitting that He became man to redeem mankind.
Who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners; Even though Jesus took the penalty for sin, He never sinned, which completely destroys the doctrine that some have that “Jesus died spiritually.” While Jesus did die physically, He did not die spiritually. He was separate from sinners when He came to this world, He lived separate from sinners in His earthly life, but yet suffered the penalty of the sinner on the Cross, which was death. In fact, He could not have suffered such a penalty, which would have been accepted by God, had He not been sinless. The Sacrifice had to be perfect.
And has become higher than the heavens; Jesus is higher than the heavens because He is the Saviour. God exalted Him and has given Him a name above all names. Philippians 2:8-11 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.  9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,  10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,  11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
27  who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people's, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.
Who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people's; Refers to the daily Sacrifices offered by the Levitical Priests under the old Jewish nation, that were imperfect and had to be repeated.
For this He did once for all when He offered up Himself; Blood was demanded as atonement for sin, and God accepted animal blood to cover the people's sin Leviticus 17:11. Because of the sacrificial system, the Israelites were generally aware that sin costs someone something and that they themselves were sinful. Many people take Christ's work on the cross for granted. They don't realize how costly it was for Jesus to secure our forgiveness, it cost him his life, and painful temporary separation from his Father Matthew 27:46.
Because Jesus died “once for all”, he brought the sacrificial system to an end. He forgives sins, past, present, and future when we are Born Again John 3:3.
28  For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.
For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness; This refers to the Old Covenant, the Jewish way of life where man appoints man to be priests.
But the word of the oath; This is referring to God; remember the oaths God has taken?
Which came after the law; Refers to Jesus death, burial, resurrection, and ascension into Heaven (New Covenant) where He is seated at the right hand of the Father.
Appoints the Son who has been perfected forever; God appointed His Son Jesus Christ as High Priest for eternity after the order of Melchizedek.
Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Sinners Prayer; Pray this, and if you believe it with your heart, Jesus will save you!

“Lord Jesus I know I am a sinner.  I confess my sins to you; I am sorry for my sins; I repent (Meaning, desiring to turn from a sinful lifestyle.) of all my sins, and I am asking for your forgiveness of all of my sins.  I believe that only you can forgive sin.  I commit my life to you and ask you to come into my heart, direct, and take charge of my life.  I believe that you died to set me free from my sinful lifestyle and you rose from the dead to give me eternal life, and right now you are seated at the Right Hand of God Almighty. I believe you are the Son of God; the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life, and my Savior.”  I believe this and have faith you will make a new person out of me, by sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in my heart and lead me in a new life. In Jesus name I pray Amen.”  (John 3:16,17; Romans 3:23; 6:23; 5:8; 10:9-13; Ephesians 2:8-10; 1 John 5:11-14; 1:6-10) (Sin: Rom. 1:22-32; Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 5:3-7)

Psalms 136:1-12 Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. Oh, give thanks to the God of gods! For His mercy endures forever. Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords! For His mercy endures forever: To Him who alone does great wonders, For His mercy endures forever; To Him who by wisdom made the heavens, For His mercy endures forever; To Him who laid out the earth above the waters, For His mercy endures forever; To Him who made great lights, For His mercy endures forever—The sun to rule by day, For His mercy endures forever; The moon and stars to rule by night, For His mercy endures forever. To Him who struck Egypt in their firstborn, For His mercy endures forever; And brought out Israel from among them, For His mercy endures forever; With a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm, For His mercy endures forever;
Father God, thank you for the great weather and the beauty of your sunrises, sunsets, and autumn colors. Bless us and open our hearts to your Word. We pray and ask for this in Jesus name, Amen!
Book of Hebrews 7:11-19 NKJV
This lesson is still about the priesthood of the Judah and Levi, but a very good lesson with meat.
11  Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to the order of Aaron?
Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law); What this phrase is saying is that there is no perfection in the Levitical priesthood of the Old Covenant. The key word that signifies this is, “if”. The Old Covenant was all based on law and keeping the law in all aspects. This covenant was an inferior covenant due to the inherited sin nature that we obtained from Adam. This is why the Levitical priesthood was necessary so they could offer up temporary atoning sacrifices for the sins of the people on an ongoing basis. If the Levitical priesthood could perform something that would make a person perfect, then there wouldn’t have been a need for God to send His Son to earth.
It is Jesus shed blood that covers us when we accept Him as our Saviour and we place our faith in Him for all things, that makes us perfect in God’s eyes. God’s word tells us our blood is what keeps us alive. Without blood we perish. That is why Jesus blood gives us eternal life when we die to our sinful ways and place our faith in Jesus. Jesus blood is perfect and eternal. Leviticus 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.'
This is why the animal sacrifices were only temporary and always had to be repeated for the forgiveness of sins, because the blood was not perfect, therefore the Levitical priesthood was imperfect and insufficient for salvation.
It was under the Levitical priesthood that law was introduced which was to be a tutor and point people in the right direction toward fearing God and living by faith, but with the human nature of the people, their focus was in trying to keep the letter of the law. The Levitical way was religion, just like we have religion of many denominations today. Religion is to teach us about salvation through Jesus Christ and what He did on the Cross for us along with His Resurrection and fearing God and His wrath against sin. But today’s religions preach a gospel of sugar n spice and everything nice.
What further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek; This is telling us that if the Levitical priesthood was sufficient for salvation then there wouldn’t have been any need for Jesus to come to earth. With the Levitical priesthood being insufficient, then it was senseless for priest to come from the Levitical order. That is why Jesus was called to the priesthood which was of a different nature. The sacrifices of the Levitical priesthood pointed to the sacrifice Jesus would be for us, and through His resurrection, our High Priest forever.
And not be called according to the order of Aaron; This phrase tells us that the Order of Aaron must give way to the Order of Melchizedek, a better Priesthood, which it was always meant to do, therefore Jesus came from the royal tribe of Judah.
We know from the Word of God that the Eternal Priesthood of Jesus was typified by Melchizedek. It existed some 400 years before the Levitical priesthood. The Word also tells us some 600 years after the Levitical Priesthood, that a perfect Priest would arise, like the order of Melchizedek. David mentions this fact through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, in a Psalm. Psalms 110:1-7 A Psalm of David. The LORD said to my Lord,"Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool." The LORD shall send the rod of Your strength out of Zion. Rule in the midst of Your enemies! Your people shall be volunteers In the day of Your power; In the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning, You have the dew of Your youth. The LORD has sworn And will not relent, "You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek." The Lord is at Your right hand; He shall execute kings in the day of His wrath. He shall judge among the nations, He shall fill the places with dead bodies, He shall execute the heads of many countries. He shall drink of the brook by the wayside; Therefore He shall lift up the head.
Did you pick up another similarity in this Psalm between Melchizedek and Jesus. Melchizedek is a King and our Lord Jesus Christ is our King.
God took an oath to make Christ a priest after the order of Melchizedek. Jesus, during the church age, is a King-Priest ruling over the church from heaven. He, during the Millennial age, will be a King-Priest ruling all the peoples of the earth from Jerusalem, Zechariah 6:13. Christ’s Melchizedekian priesthood is an eternal one and so will go on even after the close of the Millennium.
12  For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law.
For the priesthood being changed; As stated above the Levitical priesthood was not sufficient so a change was needed for a more perfect priesthood that would last for eternity.
Of necessity there is also a change of the law; With the change of the priesthood the law would be affected also, therefore a change in the law was necessary. The law was a part of the Old Covenant just like the priesthood, but with Jesus dying on the Cross and becoming our High Priest, the Jewish laws were done away with (not the 10 Commandments). The Prophets predicted that something better was coming, and more particularly, someone, that being the Messiah, Who would fulfill all the symbols of the Law. Ezekiel 11:19-20 Then I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within them, and take the stony heart out of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh,  20 that they may walk in My statutes and keep My judgments and do them; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God. (Ezekiel 36:26–27).
When a person repents and accepts Jesus as their Saviour the Holy Spirit takes up residence within their heart and convicts a person of wrong, therefore assisting the person in not sinning or gradually breaking the chains that are binding a person to a habit that is sinful. The law a Born Again Christian has is; Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength and love your neighbor; these two commandments will fulfill the Ten Commandments.
13  For He of whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no man has officiated at the altar.
For He of whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe; This phrase is referring to Jesus and as stated previously Jesus is from the tribe of Judah. Matthew 1:1-2 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:  2 Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers. Judah and Levi were two sons of Jacob. Genesis 35:22-26 ……Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:  23 the sons of Leah were Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun;  24 the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin;  25 the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's maidservant, were Dan and Naphtali;  26 and the sons of Zilpah, Leah's maidservant, were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan Aram. The Levitical priesthood came from the roots of Levi.
From which no man has officiated at the altar; Here again it is referring to Jesus and His High Priesthood. There were no priests from the tribe of Judah only the tribe of Levi, who ministered at the altar.
14  For it is evident that our Lord arose from Judah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood.
Paul is repeating himself here, only using different words for those of us that might understand this terminology better. He wants to make it very clear that Jesus came from the tribe of Judah and that He is a priest of a different order, that of Melchizedek. The only priest during Moses time and afterwards was from the tribe of Levi. There was never a priest from the tribe of Judah.
15  And it is yet far more evident if, in the likeness of Melchizedek, there arises another priest
16  who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life.
These two verses are referring to the Old Covenant which was Law, a “fleshly commandment” that represents weak frail flesh, which characterized the Levitical order. Christ was not of that order, He offered Himself up as the sacrificial, atoning sacrifice. He is a High Priest of a spiritual nature through the power of His resurrection, therefore and endless life.
No Levitical priest ever offered themselves up as a sacrifice. Even if they did, it would have been an abomination due to their sinful flesh. Only Jesus did this, and only Jesus was capable of doing this. He was sinless and through His death, burial, and resurrection He became our High Priest that will rule forever.
17  For He testifies: "YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK."
Again Paul repeats himself. I don’t know what else to say about this scripture but this: The phrase, “Thou art a Priest forever after the Order of Melchizedek,” is the fifth time that Paul has made this statement (Hebrews 5:6, 10; 6:20; 7:11, 17), and it will be stated again in Verse 21.
As I’ve said in the past when scripture is repeated many times, we need to take note of this and meditate on what is being stated by the writer through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Repeating of scripture has a purpose. While we must not ignore anything that God says, considering that something is said a number of times, we should understand the significance of it, realizing that the Holy Spirit doesn’t want it to be lost in our thinking. This statement concerning Christ being a “Priest forever after the Order of Melchizedek” is one to remember, ponder, and fully understand what is meant. You also have to remember Paul is speaking to the Hebrew believers who are set in their ways, like many of us and refuse to open our heart to Jesus.
18  For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness,
For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment; This phrase is going back to verse 16 referring to, “law of a fleshly commandment”. When Jesus died on the Cross the way of laws was abolished.
“The Law was actually made up in three parts, the Civil, the Ceremonial, and the Moral. One might say it was made into two parts, if we look at one part of it being the Moral (the Ten Commandments), and the balance of the Law falling into the category of that which is non-moral, which included both the Civil and the Ceremonial.
At any rate, the question must be asked, did the annulling of the Commandment included the Ten Commandments, which was and is the Moral Law?
The answer is somewhat incongruous, in other words, “yes” and “no!
THE MORAL LAW
When Jesus died on the Cross, He annulled the entirety of the Law, which includes the Moral Law as well, and we speak of the Ten Commandments. By annulling all of this, we refer to the fact that He kept it perfectly in every respect, and satisfied its just demands. In other words, He was the fulfillment of all the Feast Days, the Sabbath, etc., which includes all of its ceremonies and rituals. As well, and without fail, He kept the Ten Commandments perfectly, which of course, is the Moral Law. And then by His voluntary death as a Sacrifice on the Cross of Calvary, He also satisfied it’s just demands by paying its penalty. In other words, the Law demanded death as a penalty, and Jesus, therefore, died.
So, when Paul said, “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His Cross,” he meant exactly what he said. Or I should say, the Holy Spirit meant exactly that! (Colossians 2:14).
And yet all of us know, that the criteria for Christianity, and by that I refer to the standard by which we must abide, is a standard of Holiness and Righteousness, which in effect, is the highest moral standard that man has ever known. In fact, only in Christ was the Law perfectly kept. This means that it was not kept by one single individual in all of the some 1,600 years since it was given to Moses on Mount Sinai, until Christ.
So what does that mean for the Christian?
THE BELIEVER AND THE LAW
The Scripture plainly tells us as Believers, that we are “dead to the Law” (Romans 6:14; 7:4). Now if one is to notice, the Scripture doesn’t say that the Law is dead, but only that the Believer is dead to the Law. The idea is this:
The Moral Law is still very much alive and demanded of all humanity. In fact, moral law cannot change, as should be obvious. When God some 3,000 years ago, said it was wrong to steal, He, to be sure, is still saying the same thing today, etc.
So what does that mean, that we are “dead to the Law,” but the “Law is not dead”? How does that affect the Child of God? The idea is this:
If one is dead to something, one does not think about that particular thing. In other words, the Law doesn’t exist as far as the Believer is concerned. The reason is this:
Jesus has fully kept the Law in every respect, and as well, satisfied its just demands by dying on the Cross. Also, this which He did was not an incident or accident, but rather a planned program, actually planned from before the foundation of the world (I Peter 1:18–20), and planned in its entirety for you and me. In other words, everything that Jesus did, was done totally and completely for humanity, and not at all for Himself. If man was to be saved, these were things that man had to do, but of course what man couldn’t do. So, Jesus did for us, what we couldn’t do for ourselves. As stated repeatedly, this was the greatest act of love the world has ever known.
This is the reason that Paul referred to Christ as the “Last Adam” (I Corinthians 15:45). The idea is, that He had to do what the first Adam didn’t do (render a perfect obedience), and as well, undo what the first Adam did do (to pay the penalty for the first Adam’s disobedience).
Whenever the believing sinner evidences Faith in Christ, which refers to the initial Salvation experience, at that moment he is actually placed “in Christ” (Romans 6:3–5; 8:1), as a result, he now becomes a recipient of all that Christ has done. To say it in another way, Faith in Christ and what He did at the Cross on our behalf, grants to the individual all that Christ did, which is the intention of God. Simple Faith in Christ puts us in Christ, and thereby, a recipient of all that He has done, and all that He is. That’s the reason that Paul used the phrase “in Christ” or one of its derivatives such as “in Whom,” some 170 times in his 14 Epistles. No two words express the Salvation experience, and the experience of victory, more than these.
THE CROSS, OUR FAITH, AND THE HOLY SPIRIT
The moment the sinner comes to Christ, at that moment he is placed “in Christ,” and he is to remain there all the days of his life, and actually, forever. It is all done by the person evidencing Faith in Christ and His sacrificial work at the Cross (Romans 6:3–5).
Now that the Believer is in Christ, he must continue to exhibit Faith in what Christ did at the Cross, which will guarantee the help of the Holy Spirit, which will then guarantee total and complete victory, which refers to one keeping the Moral Law in every respect. To say it another way, our business is not to keep the Ten Commandments, simply because Christ has already done that, and in effect, did it all on our behalf. Our business is to continue to trust Christ and His Cross, and then the Moral Law is guaranteed to be kept. Simple Faith and Trust in Christ and what He did at the Cross on our behalf, guarantees all of this, because those are the parameters in which the Holy Spirit works.” (JSM)
Because of its weakness and unprofitableness; The law was weak because of our inherited sin nature in trying to keep it for salvation, therefore it was unprofitable. Without the Holy Spirit living within us, we don’t have the power to abide by the law. It’s like a powerful motor mounted to and insufficient frame, the frame will collapse at some point in time. The law was also unprofitable for us as Gentiles because the law was given to the Jewish people. Had Jesus not come to executed His Fathers New Covenant, we would be lost souls.
19  for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.
“The law” is referring to the Law of Moses; “made nothing perfect” refers to the purpose of the law in that it was to show man what he was, but had no power to change an individual; “but the bringing in of a better hope did” refers to Jesus dying on the Cross for us; ”by the which we draw near unto God” refers to Jesus death, burial, and resurrection opening the Holy of Holies so that now we can go directly to Him for all our needs.

Psalms 135:10-21 He defeated many nations And slew mighty kings—Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan, And all the kingdoms of Canaan—And gave their land as a heritage, A heritage to Israel His people. Your name, O LORD, endures forever, Your fame, O LORD, throughout all generations. For the LORD will judge His people, And He will have compassion on His servants. The idols of the nations are silver and gold, The work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; Eyes they have, but they do not see; They have ears, but they do not hear; Nor is there any breath in their mouths. Those who make them are like them; So is everyone who trusts in them. Bless the LORD, O house of Israel! Bless the LORD, O house of Aaron! Bless the LORD, O house of Levi! You who fear the LORD, bless the LORD! Blessed be the LORD out of Zion, Who dwells in Jerusalem! Praise the LORD!
Father God, inspire us to pick up your Word on a daily basis to see what is inside the covers. We pray and ask for this in Jesus name, Amen!
Book of Hebrews 7:1-10 NKJV
This chapter Paul continues to make comparisons between Law and Grace. He still draws from the Old Testament and shows the inferiority of the Old Covenant to the New Covenant. There are many lessons for us to learn also. We are just as guilty at the Hebrew audience that Paul is addressing. We think we have all the answers just like the Hebrew believers did, so I challenge those that think they know what the Bible teaches to seek out what you practice and verify it with scripture.
1  For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,
For this Melchizedek, king of Salem; Jewish commentators, affirm that Salem is Jerusalem, on the grounds that Jerusalem is called that in Psalm 76:2. Nearly all Jewish commentators hold this opinion. Psalms 76:2 In Salem also is His tabernacle, And His dwelling place in Zion. Salem, Jerusalem, and Zion can and often times are used interchangeably.
Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is believed to have been founded in approximately the year 4200 B.C. It has been called by the name, “Salem,” and, after that, “Jebus.” The latter name came into being through the Jebusites conquering Salem, thereby changing the name to Jebus.
David made Jerusalem his capital. II Samuel Chapter 5
It served in the capacity of the capital of Israel or Judah until it was destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D.
The name, “Jerusalem,” actually means “habitation of peace.”
Priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him; This High Priest, Melchizedek, is a High Priest of God, but we know very little about him. He appeared out of nowhere and after his encounter with Abraham he is not mentioned again with the exception of being referred to in Psalms and Hebrews. We don’t know his genealogy or parents. What we do know about him is that he is of a higher rank than what Abraham was with God. He is a High Priest with no beginning and no end just as our Lord Jesus Christ is our High Priest forever and ever.
Paul uses this story from Genesis 14:18-20 to show that Christ is greater than Abraham the father of the Jewish nation, and Abraham’s descendants of the Levitical priesthood. Therefore, the Jewish priesthood was inferior to Melchizedek's priesthood. Thus Jesus High Priesthood is of the same as that of Melchizedek and also greater than that of the Hebrew believers of Paul’s time and they should open their eyes and accept there is a higher order other than that of their Levitical priests.
How does this apply to us today? Just like the Jewish people of Paul’s time, the Jews were practicing “religion” and not faith in Jesus and what He did on Calvary. Today the majority of people of the world are doing the same, practicing doctrine and rituals of a religion for eternal life and not what the Bible teaches, that salvation is by faith. People get set in their ways and put on tunnel vision and reject what the Bible teaches. They would rather listen and believe what man says.
2  to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated "king of righteousness," and then also king of Salem, meaning "king of peace,"
To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; By Abraham paying tithe to Melchizedek, he was acknowledging him as a Priest of God, and also his superior. This is the first example of paying tithe in the Word of God. It was practiced 430 years before the Law.
This means that if Abraham paid Tithes to Melchizedek, his natural and spiritual seed, which of course includes current believers, we should continue to pay tithes to this Priesthood of higher order also (Jesus Christ), since it has now replaced the priesthood order of Aaron and his descendants.
So, do you give 10% to God? I have to admit that before I was saved I didn’t, but after I accepted Jesus as my Saviour, I came under conviction of not tithing and ever since it has been 10% of the gross and I know this holds true for other saved individuals also. Sometimes it is very difficult to do with the bills that come due, but we cannot out give God and it seems there is always money to pay what needs to be paid. Malachi 3:10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this," Says the LORD of hosts, "If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it.
First being translated "king of righteousness,"; Melchizedek was the King of Righteousness, which means he was a type of Christ.
And then also king of Salem, meaning "king of peace,"; He was also the King of Peace, which is also like Christ. The Righteousness of Christ brings Peace.
3  without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.
This verse gives us the idea that Melchizedek was the Son of God, and because of this, commentators cannot agree on who Melchizedek was; a real human being or the Son of God. I believe Melchizedek was a real human being and that the Holy Spirit presented him the way He did in the Bible to be an example to the Jewish nation of Paul’s time and to us of our time that sometimes what we have our faith in can be wrong and that we need to open our mind and hearts up to the doctrine of the Bible and not that of religion.
The key phrase here is, “but made like the Son of God”. He was made “like” the Son of God as an example so that we will place our faith in the proper thing, and that being the Cross. It is to rock us out of our rut of life and see the light. Melchizedek’s appearing to have no father, mother, genealogy, beginning or end, and that he appeared before the Jewish laws, shows us that we need to wake up and seek the truth about what we have our faith in for eternal life. We need to seek the truth about the religion we practice.
4  Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils.
Now consider how great this “man” was; The first part of this verse tells us that Melchizedek was a man and not of spiritual nature.
To whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils; This sets the standard for tithing. If Abraham saw fit to tithe to someone of a higher order for their Godly work, then we should also follow Abraham’s role in tithing for the Kingdom of God.
5  And indeed those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to receive tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren, though they have come from the loins of Abraham;
And indeed those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to receive tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren; Paul is giving us another example here with the last verse and this verse, and that example being the difference between Law and Grace. Abraham gave tithe which was before the law came into effect. The Israelites and people of Paul’s time gave tithes because it was the Law for them to give. We give tithe because of faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus. So Abraham and current times Christians tithe because of faith in Jesus and all that He does for us, whereas the Jews of Jesus and the Apostles times tithed because they were required to by Law.
Though they have come from the loins of Abraham; Even though these Hebrew believer came from the loins of Abraham, they are to follow Abraham’s example and tithe out of faith and not because they have to. They are to come out of their lifestyle of living according to laws of the Old Covenant and live by faith in the New Covenant.
The Jewish people prided themselves that they came from Abraham’s loins, so Paul is showing them there is a new way to salvation and that is of faith and not law. We need to grasp this also and follow Abraham’s lifestyle of faith.
6  but he whose genealogy is not derived from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.
But he whose genealogy is not derived from them; “He” in this phrase is referring to Melchizedek and he is not of a Jewish heritage.
Received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises; Abraham tithed to Melchizedek before the Law therefore setting the example of all believers of Jesus Christ to tithe, whether Jew or Gentile. If we claim to be Born Again Christians, then we claim to be children of Abraham. Galatians 3:7 Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.
Abraham received a blessing from Melchizedek even though Abraham had Gods promises. You would think it would be the other way around, but Melchizedek was a type of Christ, therefore greater than Abraham.
7  Now beyond all contradiction the lesser is blessed by the better.
What this verse is telling us is that there is no disagreement or contentions that Melchizedek was superior to Abraham, thus telling the Hebrew’s and us that Christ is better than any other system, and is the only One who can properly bless. It isn’t always the tradition or heritage that is always better, sometimes we need to challenge ourselves and get out of that box we are bound in and see what is on the outside. In other words it is out with the old (Old Covenant) and in with the new (New Covenant).
This is something that is very hard for people to accept. Not just the Jewish people, but us also. We get complacent in our religion and just continue day after day practicing the same thing. We are creatures that do not like change or even think about change. We have been brought up all our life in a religion and have just accepted it without challenging the doctrine that is taught and practiced. The Jewish people of Paul’s era were the same way and are still the same way. So the lesser is the Old Covenant which is trying to obey laws for salvation, which is not achievable because of our inherited sin nature. The greater or better is the New Covenant which is by us as human beings realizing that we are sinners by nature and that we don’t have the capability of obeying all the laws 100% of the time, therefore we confess this fact and live by faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
8  Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives.
Here mortal men receive tithes; Paul is referring to his time period and speaking of the Levitical priest receiving tithes. The majority of the Jewish nation was still practicing Judaism and tithing to the priests.
But there he receives them; This phrase is referring back to Genesis and the tithing that Abraham gave to Melchizedek.
Of whom it is witnessed that he lives; Melchizedek was a type of Christ meaning that we don’t know about his beginning (has no beginning) or end (has no end), which represents Jesus Christ.
9  Even Levi, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, so to speak,
10  for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.
Paul explains in these two verses that Levi paid tithes to Melchizedek even though he wasn’t born yet. Just because tithes were paid to Levi, the priestly order of the Jews, doesn’t signify that it was the superior order, in fact Paul shows the Hebrews the complete opposite. If Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek, and Abraham is the father of the Jewish people, then Levi also paid tithes to Melchizedek. This placed the whole of the Jewish system as second to that of Jesus Christ. This makes the New Covenant better than the Old, which is the argument of the Book of Hebrews.
In fact anyone that has accepted Jesus as their Saviour has paid tithes to Melchizedek, because we are children of Abraham being saved by Grace.
