Psalms 128:1-6 A Song of Ascents. Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, Who walks in His ways. When you eat the labor of your hands, You shall be happy, and it shall be well with you. Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine In the very heart of your house, Your children like olive plants All around your table. Behold, thus shall the man be blessed Who fears the LORD. The LORD bless you out of Zion, And may you see the good of Jerusalem All the days of your life. Yes, may you see your children's children. Peace be upon Israel!
Father God, we thank you for taking a special interest in us and sending your Son Jesus Christ to us in human flesh so that we might have a chance for eternal life. It is out of love that you did this, because your desire is that all might be saved. John 3:16-17 I ask for special blessings for anyone that reads these lessons and that their eyes and mind be opened. Let the revelation of the Cross be revealed to them, so they can receive that free gift of Grace you have for them. May they find peace and comfort in your Word. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of Hebrews 2:10-18 NKJV
The last lesson was still presenting fact of Jesus superiority over the angels. The balance of this chapter is about salvation. What salvation is and that Jesus is the only one that can save us from the pits of Hell because of His pure divine sinless nature and dying for us. Without this act of love we would not have a chance for eternal life with Jesus in Heaven because we are born with the sin nature that we inherited from Adam. I am so thankful for Jesus dying on the Cross for me, because without His sacrifice I would be doomed for eternal darkness.
Some of these verses are difficult to understand due to the way they are written. I will do my best to explain them, because these verses are so important in understanding what salvation is all about.
10  For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
This verse would be better understood if it was written as such: God, who made all of creation for himself, also choose to bring many children into glory. It was only right that He should make Jesus, through the suffering on the Cross, a perfect leader, fit to bring mankind to salvation.
For it was fitting for Him; Meaning God.
For whom are all things and by whom are all things; God created all things for himself. Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
In bringing many sons to glory; It is God’s desire that all will come to Him to be saved. John 3:15 so that everyone who believes in Him will have eternal life.
To make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings; In order for mankind to have a chance to be saved it was only fitting that Jesus would come in human flesh and defeat sin, and then suffer, died, and rise again. It is through understanding this act of love and why it had to take place so that all we have to do is believe and place our faith in the message that the Cross transmits. Because of Adams failure to obey, sin was introduced into the human race and every human being born, is born with sin impregnated flesh. We as ordinary human beings do not have the capability of not sinning. Only Jesus was capable of not sinning, therefore it made Him the perfect sacrifice for us to put our faith in, and when we do that through a confession (A confession to Jesus and not to man, man cannot save a person.) of realizing we are born as sinners and will remain that way through life here on earth, then we need to ask Jesus to save us because we don’t want to live a life that offends Him. Then Jesus will save us through His life giving blood that was perfect, the blood that gives eternal life.
11  For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren,
If we rephrase this verse so that we can understand it in our way of speech it would be. So now Jesus and the ones He makes holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them His brothers and sisters.
For both; This is referring to Jesus and those that come to Him that are Born Again.
He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified; When we humble ourselves and come to Jesus with a broken and contrite heart and accept Him as our life giving Saviour, our sins are made null and void, resulting in us being justified through the shed blood of Jesus. When this happens the Holy Spirit enters our heart; we become a temple of God and the sanctification process begins. With the Holy Spirit residing within we are place under conviction by the Holy Spirit when we sin and even when we think about sinning. The things of the past that we did through human reasoning will all of a sudden bear conviction that it is wrong and sinful against God. Jesus sanctifies those that accept Him as their Saviour.
Are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren; Because of this sanctification, all that are saved belong to God’s family and are called brethren; the true Church. We become one in Christ.
12  saying: "I WILL DECLARE YOUR NAME TO MY BRETHREN; IN THE MIDST OF THE ASSEMBLY I WILL SING PRAISE TO YOU."
This quotation is from Psalm 22:22. The nature of this psalm is “a Messianic Psalm” and therefore “a Prophetic Psalm” (see Matthew 27:39, 43, 46; John 19:23, 28; Hebrews 2:12). It prophecies “the (cross) sufferings of Christ and the glory that should follow”. David wrote this psalm at a time when he was experiencing intense suffering at the hands of Saul but he wrote by inspiration and so does not describe his own sufferings but the sufferings of Christ.
Saying: I WILL DECLARE YOUR NAME TO MY BRETHREN; This verse is stating that Jesus will proclaim God’s name to those that belong to Him, the church.
IN THE MIDST OF THE ASSEMBLY I WILL SING PRAISE TO YOU; Jesus will praise God because of the great victory of the Cross, which has brought many into the Kingdom.
13  And again: "I WILL PUT MY TRUST IN HIM." And again: "HERE AM I AND THE CHILDREN WHOM GOD HAS GIVEN ME."
This verse has two quotes, "I WILL PUT MY TRUST IN HIM." from 2 Samuel 22:3 and the other "HERE AM I AND THE CHILDREN WHOM GOD HAS GIVEN ME." from Isaiah 8:18. As you can see these quotes are from the OT which were inspired by the Holy Spirit pointing to the Cross of Christ to come.
And again: "I WILL PUT MY TRUST IN HIM."; Jesus put his trust in God while He was here on earth in human flesh. He prayed to God constantly in fact He would go and find areas of seclusion to be alone with God. In the garden He ask God to take from Him what was soon to happen, but ended the prayer with, “let your will be done”, thus placing his trust in God’s hands. Jesus denied his flesh and gave it all to God, and that is what we need to do to have a close relationship with Him. Luke 22:42 saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done."
And again: "HERE AM I AND THE CHILDREN WHOM GOD HAS GIVEN ME."; These children are those that have given their life to Jesus, they are the saved. It is only through faith in what Jesus did that people can be saved and called children of God. It is only through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and placing their faith in the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus for us, that will redeem us. This is what faith is all about, we can’t touch it, hear it, taste it, put it in a jar or bank for future use. It is like the wind, we don’t know where it comes from, where it is going, we can only see it by the movement of trees thus we are aware of its presence, the wind has no taste, but we know it is real and we accept it along with the coolness of a gentle breeze or the forces of a hurricane. Faith in what and why Jesus had to suffer, die, be buried, and rise to the seat of the right hand of God, is the same. We just need to accept it, believe, and place our trust in Jesus.
14  Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood; This is speaking of human creation being of flesh and blood, not angelic or of a spiritual nature.
He; Himself likewise shared in the same; This refers to Jesus that also took on human flesh.
That through death; The purpose of Jesus coming to earth in human flesh and blood was to defeat sin and be the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. His death on the Cross is atonement for our sins when we accept Him as our Saviour. We are no longer look upon by God as sinful flesh, but as His Sons image because we are washed in the atoning blood of Jesus.
He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil; He of course refers to Jesus. When Jesus defeated sin He also destroyed the power that Satan holds over people, which leads to a second death (spiritual death) and eternity in the Lake of Fire. It is through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus that sets us free from the bonds that Satan holds on us.
Jesus had to become human so that he could die and rise again in order to destroy the devil's power over death. Romans 6:5-11 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,  6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.  7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.  8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,  9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.  10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.  11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Only then could Christ deliver those who had lived in constant fear of death and free them to live for him. When we belong to God, we need not fear death, because we know that death is only the doorway into eternal life (1 Corinthians 15).
To sum this verse up it could be stated like this; Because God's children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could He die, and only by dying could He break the power of the devil, who had the power of death.
15  and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
Faith in Jesus releases a person from fear of death because when a person has a Spiritual Birth they are released from the bondage of sin caused by the inherited sin nature. Without this birth, one is in bondage for a lifetime. Christ's death and resurrection sets us free from the fear of death because death has been defeated. Every person must die, but death is not the end; instead, it is the doorway to a new life. All who dread death should have the opportunity to know the hope that Christ's victory brings. Do you fear death? If so, you need to ask yourself what your faith is in, Jesus and what He did for you on the Cross or religious dogma?
16  For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give aid to the seed of Abraham.
Jesus did not come to help angels; He came to help the descendants of Abraham and whosoever desires life through a second birth. John 3:3-7
17  Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
In the Old Testament, the high priest was the mediator between God and his people. His job was to regularly offer animal sacrifices according to the law and to intercede with God for forgiveness of the people's sins. Jesus Christ is now our High Priest. He came to earth as a human being; therefore, he understands our weaknesses and shows mercy to us. He has once and for all paid the penalty for our sins by his own sacrificial death (atonement), and he can be depended on to restore our broken relationship with God. We are released from sin's domination over us when we commit ourselves fully to Jesus Christ, trusting completely in what he has done for us on the Cross.
18  For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.
Knowing that Jesus suffered pain and faced temptation gives us consolation when we face trials and tribulations. Jesus understands our struggles because he faced them as a human being. We can trust Christ to help us survive suffering and overcome temptation. When we face trials, we need to go Jesus for strength and patience. He understands our needs and is able to help. Hebrews 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.  15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.  16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Sinners Prayer; Pray this, and if you believe it with your heart, Jesus will save you!

“Lord Jesus I know I am a sinner.  I confess my sins to you; I am sorry for my sins; I repent (Meaning, desiring to turn from a sinful lifestyle.) of all my sins, and I am asking for your forgiveness of all of my sins.  I believe that only you can forgive sin.  I commit my life to you and ask you to come into my heart, direct, and take charge of my life.  I believe that you died to set me free from my sinful lifestyle and you rose from the dead to give me eternal life, and right now you are seated at the Right Hand of God Almighty. I believe you are the Son of God; the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life, and my Savior.”  I believe this and have faith you will make a new person out of me, by sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in my heart and lead me in a new life. In Jesus name I pray Amen.”  (John 3:16,17; Romans 3:23; 6:23; 5:8; 10:9-13; Ephesians 2:8-10; 1 John 5:11-14; 1:6-10) (Sin: Rom. 1:22-32; Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 5:3-7)

Psalms 127:1-5 A Song of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep. Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one's youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; They shall not be ashamed, But shall speak with their enemies in the gate.
Father God, we thank you for taking a special interest in us and sending your Son Jesus Christ to us in human flesh so that we might have a chance for eternal life. It is out of love that you did this, because your desire is that all might be saved. John 3:16-17 I ask for special blessings for anyone that reads these lessons. May they find peace and comfort in your Word. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of Hebrews 2:1-9 NKJV
Chapter Two goes on to say that based on all that was confirmed in Chapter One about the rank of Jesus in God’s kingdom by means of prophecy being fulfilled by our Saviour, then we should believe and not doubt the Word of God. The start of this chapter states a few more facts that validates Jesus rank and then goes on to redemption.
1  Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.
Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard; “Therefore” in the Greek means “on account of this.” On account of what? On account of all that is stated in Chapter One we need to take into account this information and believe what the Word of God says.  What was prophesized long before Jesus birth and death became reality, the same will hold true for the prophecy about the end times. We need to heed what the Bible teaches and not scoff at it. Paul is trying to get his Jewish brethren to open their eyes and see what they hold tight to, has come true according to the prophesies and teaching of the OT scriptures. The whole of the OT had one purpose, and that was to point the Israelites toward their coming Redeemer. All the miracles, revelations, prophecies, and laws of the OT was to point them in the direction of seeing and recognizing Jesus as the Messiah when he came into this world. But only a few recognized Him and the rest rejected Him and crucified Him. Those that recognized Jesus as the Messiah actually knew and understood what the OT taught, while those that rejected Him didn’t really know what the OT taught in detail, therefore rejected Jesus and believed in their interpretation of scripture. The same holds true today. People claim to know what the Bible says, but what they believe many times is religious dogma, customs of old, heritage, etc, therefore they call themselves Christians, Christians based on mans ways and not God’s ways.
Spiritual blindness had prohibited the brethren from seeing His greatness. The proof of who He was, was awesome, the healings, the casting out of demons, raising the dead, etc. Just the prophesies alone were so accurate how could anyone doubt. The Messiah must come from the Tribe of Judah, the house of David. Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Joseph and Mary were both direct descendants of David who was of the Tribe of Judah. Isaiah stated Jesus would be born of a virgin. Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Micah the Prophet stated some 700 years before Jesus birth He would be born in Bethlehem. Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. If the Pharisees had studied Isaiah closer they would have found that he foretold of healings, deliverances, and miracles that Jesus would fulfill. Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.
Lest we drift away; The meaning of “Lest we drift away”, portrays the fact that if one doesn’t study the Word of God daily, they will drift away from the truth. We humans are far more interested in the things of the world that are temporal, instead of the things that are eternal. We can recite sports scores, player statistics, or what store has the best bargains, but not the Word of God. Had the Scribes and Pharisee studied the OT and asked questions to verify the prophets claims maybe they would have recognized Jesus as their Messiah, but no they were blind with self pride, arrogance, and mans interpretations. The same holds true for today, man hasn’t changed, they still think they have all the answers and won’t believe God’s Word or interpret it to fit their lifestyle, but some day the light bulb will come on and I pray it is sooner than later.
2  For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward,
For if the word spoken through angels; The revelation in the Old Testament was indeed given by God, but it was the common opinion of the Hebrews that it was by the ministry of angels. Acts 7:38  "This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the Angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, the one who received the living oracles to give to us. Paul is using the Hebrews beliefs to try and get them to believe in what Jesus preached and the testimonies of those who were witnesses. Verse 2 and 3 go together.
Proved steadfast; The word “steadfast” means that it was settled and established, so if the brethren believed what angels spoke, then it was firm and they should believe. The law was firm or established, and not variable, it determined what crime was, and it was firm in its punishment. It did not yield to circumstances, but if not obeyed in all respects, punishment was the result. The idea here is not that everything was “fulfilled,” but it is that the Law so given could not be violated at liberty. It was not safe to violate it without consequences.
And every transgression and disobedience received a just reward; Every instance of disobeying the law was sure to be punished or receive a just reward. It made no provision for pleasure in sin, it demanded prompt, implicit, and entire obedience. This was the character of the Law. It threatened punishment for each and every offence, and made no allowance for transgression in any form. God’s laws are highly disregarded in the world today, but one day all will stand before Jesus for judgment.
3  how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,
How shall we escape; How shall we escape the just recompense due to transgression? What way is there of being saved from punishment, if we neglect salvation, and do not embrace what it has to offer? The logic is, that there is no other way of salvation, and the neglect of this will be followed by certain destruction. The apostle proceeds to show, by stating that this plan of salvation was proclaimed first by the Lord himself in His ministry, and was confirmed by amazing miracles and the Apostles teaching the same message.
If we neglect so great a salvation; Neglect is referring to how we view transgression and disobedience to God. If we neglect God’s laws and live a life as we see fit, then how are we to escape the flames of Hell? Let’s look at an example of neglect from a business point of view. It doesn’t matter what your function is where you work, if you neglect your duties, depending on what they are, you could shut an assembly line down, cause a shipment to miss its deadlines resulting in an order cancellation and profit loss, not harvest the crop timely resulting in profit loss, not process loan papers timely resulting in a lost customer, etc. If the neglect continues and goes unchecked the business will close and jobs will be lost. There would be no means of escape because the rules, regulation, and job tasks were neglected you would suffer the consequences no matter what they were in some way.
Eternal life is the same, if we neglect the Word of God, what it has to offer (salvation), and live a life that we want, then we will receive our just reward of Hell for eternity. Without repenting and accepting Jesus as our Saviour we are doomed, because Jesus is the only human being that led a sinless life, He defeated Satan at the Cross. We as human beings are sinners and without the gift of Grace by Faith there is no hope. Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
So, “great a salvation” from sin and from Hell, it is called “great” because: Its author is great; it is great because it saves from great sins, no matter how grave they are; it is great because it saves from great dangers, the danger of eternal Hell; it is great because the reward of eternal life in Heaven is made possible by the Cross; it is “great” because it was effected by endless displays of power, and wisdom, and love. It was procured by the incarnation and humiliation of the Son of God. There are many many good people in the world that know who God and Jesus are, but they neglected them or put them on the bottom of the daily task list and don’t get to them, because of our fast pace lifestyle. So we can go on with business as usual, and execute our daily to do list with Jesus being last or not even on the list, but the end result will not be good.
Which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him; This phase means exactly what is states. Jesus preached the Gospel and when the Apostles received the Holy Ghost on Pentecost, then they went out and preached what they had been taught by Jesus. John the Baptist prepared the way so the Gospel could be preached. He was like an appetizer before a meal.
4  God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?
God is a witness to Jesus Christ, and there is no greater Witness. He proved this by giving power to the Apostles to perform miracles, etc. The Holy Spirit, in fact, performed all these great things in the ministries of the disciples via the gifts of the Spirit (Corinthians 12:8–10), and was able to do so because of what Jesus had done on the Cross. This was all according to the Will of God, meaning that it is something that was planned long before. Actually, Peter said that the Crucifixion of Christ on behalf of lost mankind was planned even before the foundation of the world (I Peter 1:18–20).
5  For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels.
As powerful as Angels are, God has not given them dominion of the world to come. The word “angels” also includes Satan, because he is a fallen angel. Therefore this statement given to Paul by the Holy Spirit, states Satan and his followers will not have dominion of this Earth either. Jesus Christ, will rule and reign over the entirety of this Earth one day forever (Revelation Chapters 21–22).
The world to come, speaks of the New Jerusalem era to come, when all of the forces of darkness will have been put down forever.
6  But one testified in a certain place, saying: "WHAT IS MAN THAT YOU ARE MINDFUL OF HIM, OR THE SON OF MAN THAT YOU TAKE CARE OF HIM?
In verse 6-8 Paul introduces a quotation from Psalms 8:4–6. David wrote this Psalm and the theme is, “the goodness of God to man, the insignificance of man, and the greatness of man”.
These three verses are talking about man in general and also Jesus Christ. We are made in God’s image and therefore being created in this image why wouldn’t God have a special interest in our well being? Genesis 1:26 It is the main reason Jesus became man to die for us so we could have a chance of eternal life through salvation, if we so desire.
7  YOU HAVE MADE HIM A LITTLE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS; YOU HAVE CROWNED HIM WITH GLORY AND HONOR, AND SET HIM OVER THE WORKS OF YOUR HANDS.
This verse is speaking of the incarnation of Jesus and also mankind. Being in human form we are lower than that of angels. Don’t be confused by this because, Jesus was only lower than the angels while He was here on earth. He is now exalted and sits at the right hand of God Almighty because He defeated sin and death through His death, burial, and resurrection, meaning the Cross.
Mankind has dominion over the things of the earth, or did have until Adam fell from God’s grace (Genesis 1:26), and one day Jesus will have dominion over all things/universe starting with the Kingdom Age.
8  YOU HAVE PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION UNDER HIS FEET." For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him.
Here again this is a twofold statement. Originally mankind had dominion until the fall of Adam. This dominion will be restored, and has begun with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, but won’t come to completion until after all corruption is wiped off the face of this earth.
9  But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.
This statement says it all. If it wasn’t for the love of God for His created beings in His image, there wouldn’t be any reason for God to take on the form of human flesh and die for us out of love so that we could be save by God’s Grace through Faith. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

7-2-2014 Vol. 9 Part 2 The Book of Hebrews (Hebrews 1:7-14)

Psalms 126:1-6 A Song of Ascents. When the LORD brought back the captivity of Zion, We were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, And our tongue with singing. Then they said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them." The LORD has done great things for us, And we are glad. Bring back our captivity, O LORD, As the streams in the South. Those who sow in tears Shall reap in joy. He who continually goes forth weeping, Bearing seed for sowing, Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, Bringing his sheaves with him.
Father God, thank you for enlightening us to the rank and duties of your ministering Angels. Bless and guide us during this 4th of July Holiday and I ask for special blessings for anyone that reads these lessons. May they find peace and comfort in your Word. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
Book of Hebrews 1:7-14 NKJV
We left off last week with Paul informing his listeners, the Jewish believers, just who Jesus was. He uses OT scripture quotes from the prophets of old to verify what he is saying. He talks about the rank of angel’s vs. Jesus; the deity of Jesus; that He was the Son of God by means of His incarnation; that angels worship Jesus; that Jesus was not referred as the Son of God in the OT, but when He became man He was and is now called the Son of God.
People dispute this fact and say the Son of God always was and always will be. I agree 100%, but during OT times Jesus was not known as the Son of God or was referred to as the Son of God by the people of OT times, He was the Word. John 1:1-14 verifies this along with Revelation 19:13. We use the name of Jesus and the Son of God when thinking about the OT scripture, which is normal, and there is nothing wrong with that, but He didn’t become the Son of God until the incarnation. I hope this makes sense to you!
The rest of this chapter goes on explaining the rank and duties of angels vs. Jesus and all backed up with OT scripture which is in capitalization, so let’s move on with this chapter.
7  And of the angels He says: "WHO MAKES HIS ANGELS SPIRITS AND HIS MINISTERS A FLAME OF FIRE."
And of the angels He says; The Apostle, Paul, continues on in an attempt to prove to the Jews that Christ is superior to angels. He continues to use the Scriptures of the OT which they profess to believe. In all of Paul’s writings he uses the OT scripture, especially when speaking to his Jewish brethren. Everything in the OT scriptures point to the New Covenant, and if a person doesn’t understand what and why Jesus died on the Cross for us, then they will not understand the OT.
I can attest to this fact. Before I was Born Again I could not understand the OT, it didn’t make sense to me. After I surrendered my life to Jesus, all of a sudden I could make the connections and see how the OT pointed to the NT and vice versa. It was truly a revelation to me. Truly Born Again Christians experience this in their life when they are regenerated. Many people claim to be Born Again, but if their life does not change, meaning the old habits don’t die, then they have experienced a false conversion.
WHO MAKES HIS ANGELS SPIRITS AND HIS MINISTERS A FLAME OF FIRE; This phrase is taken from Psalms 104:4. There are 50 Psalm’s that are authorless and this is one of them. This Psalm is all about the attributes of God as seen in the realm of nature.
“Spirits” in the Greek is “pneuma,” and means “wind, spirit, messenger.” Here the meaning is “winds.” Angels serve God in many ways, in other words they are ministers of God. Many think the word “ministers” in this phrase refers to preachers, but that isn’t the case here it is referring to Angels. Angels service can change and does change by the decree of God. They are there to serve and do God’s will in, any form, function, or in any capacity.
8  But to the Son He says: "YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER; A SCEPTER OF RIGHTEOUSNESS IS THE SCEPTER OF YOUR KINGDOM.
This quotation is taken from Psalm 45:6. The nature of this Psalm has three points; First, it is a “Maschil psalm” (a psalm designed to give instruction). Second, it is “a song of loves” (a song dealing with love). Third, it is “a Messianic Psalm” (a psalm prophesying things concerning the Messiah). Although historically this psalm probably deals with the triumphant and glorious reign of Solomon, prophetically it deals with the triumphant and glorious Millennial reign of Christ. The historical reign of Solomon is a faint type of the prophetical reign of Christ. Many of the statements of this psalm go beyond Solomon and his reign, and are true only when they are referred to Christ and His coming Millennial reign.
“Your throne, O God”, is referring to the throne of God, which also points to the fact that Jesus is God the Son and that He will reign forever and ever. It is pointing out that Jesus is supreme over all. His reign will be in the kingdom of righteousness (The Kingdom Age) and the rule will be of a righteous nature. There won’t be any gray areas, or excuses of the way a person was raise, it will be black and white according to God’s laws.
9  YOU HAVE LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HATED LAWLESSNESS; THEREFORE GOD, YOUR GOD, HAS ANOINTED YOU WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS MORE THAN YOUR COMPANIONS."
This verse is from Psalm 45:7.
YOU HAVE LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HATED LAWLESSNESS; We know that Jesus loved righteousness and hated sin because He kept the law perfectly. God the Father acknowledges this at Jesus baptism when he said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." Matthew 3:17 Have you ever thought that is why God said this?
THEREFORE GOD; This refers to the Man Christ Jesus, God the Son.
YOUR GOD; This refers to God the Father.
HAS ANOINTED YOU WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS; Anointed” is the translation of the Greek “chrio” which is always used in the New Testament of the Anointing with the Holy Spirit.
Oil” in the Greek is “aleipho,” but here has a different meaning than usual. Here the oil of joy refers not to literal oil as usual with this particular Greek word, but to the Holy Spirit who bestows joy, and thus the Greek word “chrio,” is used appropriately here.
Our Lord was anointed with the Holy Spirit for His threefold Office of Prophet, Priest, and King, at His Baptism in the River Jordan, which was at the time of His entrance into His Ministry.
MORE THAN YOUR COMPANIONS; This is referring to Jesus being anointed with oil of gladness, and not angels.
10  And: "YOU, LORD, IN THE BEGINNING LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH, AND THE HEAVENS ARE THE WORK OF YOUR HANDS.
This quote is taken from Psalm 102:25. It is “a Prophetic-Messianic Psalm” (a psalm which at the time of its writing was prophecy to be fulfilled by the Messiah at the time of His first advent). The Psalmist, whoever he was, no doubt speaks words which reflect his own afflictions and sufferings but he is led by the Holy Spirit to speak words which go beyond his own experience to reflect the afflictions and sufferings of Christ during the last few hours of His life here on the earth.
YOU, LORD, IN THE BEGINNING LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH; This is still speaking of Jesus Christ and who He is. Paul is pulling all that he can from the OT in order to get his Jewish brethren to see that Jesus is the Messiah. The word “beginning” corresponds with Genesis 1:1. It has to do with the creation of the Earth, and the universe. It has nothing to do with God, for God has no beginning. “The unchangeable and eternal power and majesty of the Son, spoken of in Verses 11–12, find their basis in the fact that He is the One Who laid the foundation of the Earth and fashioned the Heavens.” (Wuest)
THE HEAVENS ARE THE WORK OF YOUR HANDS; The phrase, “works of your hands,” is not to be taken literally, only meaning that Christ is the Creator. Actually, the Lord spoke creation into existence (Hebrew 11:3). The Heavens include everything in the universe except earth. Only someone of deity has the power to create what exist through speech.
11  THEY WILL PERISH, BUT YOU REMAIN; AND THEY WILL ALL GROW OLD LIKE A GARMENT;
This quote is taken from Psalm 102:26. It was written some 800 – 1,000 years before Jesus. These words could have been uttered by the Father to the Son as He hung on the Cross.
Here again Paul is conveying that Jesus will remain forever, but creation will grow old, and at some point in time, meaning after the Millennial reign, the Heavens and Earth will be renewed. Heavens, earth, and Gods children (Born Again Saints) will be all regenerated and live a life as God intended. Revelation 21:1-3 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea.  2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.  3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.
12  LIKE A CLOAK YOU WILL FOLD THEM UP, AND THEY WILL BE CHANGED. BUT YOU ARE THE SAME, AND YOUR YEARS WILL NOT FAIL."
This quote is taken from Psalm 102:26-27. This verse is a continuation of the last verse, further stating Jesus will remain the same, whether it be 2,000 years ago, today, or tomorrow. God does not change, we as human beings change our interpretation of God’s laws so that we can live a lifestyle that goes against what His Word the Bible teaches. Malachi 3:6 "For I am the LORD, I do not change……..  Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
A change is coming for all creation, with everything being cleansed by fire, and once again made new. The changes for humans is regeneration into a new lifestyle when one accepts Jesus as their Saviour and places their life in His hands, (Born Again John 3:3-7) or, they can continue living the way they are and be consigned to Hell forever at the Great White Throne Judgment. Revelation 20:11-15 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them.  12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.  13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.  14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.  15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
13  But to which of the angels has He ever said: "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, TILL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES YOUR FOOTSTOOL"?
This quote is from Psalm 110:1. This Psalm is a Prophetic/Messianic/Millennial Psalm (a psalm which is prophetic of the office and the work of the Messiah during the Millennium). It points to the King/Priest ministry of Christ during the Millennium.
The sitting of Jesus portrays the work is finished. Even though the work is finished, all the results of the work have not yet happened. The finale will be at the conclusion of the Millennial Reign, when Satan will be forever defeated and cast into the Lake of Fire. There he will remain forever with all of his followers of evil. (Revelation 20:10–15).
This verse also speaks of Jesus authority over all of creation, because God never said anything like this to and angel. No matter how beautiful or powerful an angel is, God the Son is of a much greater authority.
The phrase, “Until I make your enemies your footstool,” refers to God making all of Jesus enemies powerless. This phrase comes from OT times. When a tribe would overtake another tribe it was customary for the leader of the victor, to stand on the throat of the defeated king. The enemies here being referred to are the enemies of God’s Ways, the unrighteous. I Corinthians 15:24–28
14  Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?
Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister; This clearly states that angels are servants of God and administer the will of God. They take their orders from God and not man. Is it possible that they take massages to God for us? I think it is possible, but Jesus is our true mediator between God and us and He is the one we need to converse with.
What other ministering do they do? The Bible has these recorded and I’m sure there are many more. They rejoice when someone repents and accepts Jesus. Luke 15:10 They are guardians of little children. Matthew 18:10 They have a special interest in all that relates to the Redemption of man. I Peter 1:12 They come to our aid in times of temptation to strengthen us. Luke 22:43 They also attend the dying Saints. Luke 16:22 Did you know they did all these things? Jesus said He could call a legend of angels to help Him, maybe sometimes we need to ask Jesus to send us some of His army when we are in need?
For those who will inherit salvation; This statement states that they minister to those that will accept Jesus as their Saviour. First thought is this seems a little harsh if they only minister to those that will inherit salvation, but remember, God knows who will be saved and who has a heart of stone, so therefore looking at it from that perspective it makes sense. Angels minister to the saved and those that will be saved.
So are you convinced of Jesus rank and Deity, or are you like Paul’s Jewish Brethren?
