The Lord’s Prayer
6-15-2011 Vol. 4 Part 10
Psalm 26:4-5 NASB  I do not sit with deceitful men, Nor will I go with pretenders.  5  I hate the assembly of evildoers, And I will not sit with the wicked. Psalm 25:20 NASB  Guard my soul and deliver me; Do not let me be ashamed, for I take refuge in You. Psalm 141:3-4 NASB  Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.  4  Do not incline my heart to any evil thing, To practice deeds of wickedness With men who do iniquity; And do not let me eat of their delicacies. Father God we praise your name, we thank you for all that you do for us. Deliver us O’Lord from evil so that we may be found worthy of your grace. You are awesome! Thank you Jesus! Amen!
Deliver us from evil.
What do you think of when you say, “Deliver us from evil”? Deliver us from the Devil? That is probably the most common thought. Evil is has many meanings and is very broad. Webster states this:
1.    Morally bad or wrong; wicked; depraved.
2.    Harmful; injurious.
3.    Unlucky; disastrous.
4.    Resulting from conduct regarded as immoral, as an evil reputation.
5.    Sin; sinfulness.
6.    Anything that causes, harm, pain, disaster, etc.
7.    Satan.
What about this list if we disregard it and live the way we think is right? From God’s point of view, now who is evil?
Exodus 20:3-17 NASB
3    "You shall have no other gods before Me.
4    "You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
5    "You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
6    but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
7    "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.
8    "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9    "Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10  but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.
11   "For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
12   "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you.
13   "You shall not murder.
14  "You shall not commit adultery.
15   "You shall not steal.
16  "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17   "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
Here is one more list, and it is pretty hard to deny that evil comes from each and every one of us. Mark  7:21-23 NLT  For from within, out of a person's heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder,  22  adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.  23  All these evil things come from within; they are what defile you."
In all the years you have been saying the Lord’s Prayer, have you ever thought about the fact that you are praying to God our Father and asking him to deliver you from the evil around you, and you need to include your human flesh also? It is a pretty humbling thought that our Heavenly Father views us as evil. Go look in a mirror. What you see and what God sees is two different things. You see the beauty of what God created that he loves, but what God sees is what is in your heart. What do you have in your heart base on the lists above?
You’re thinking about right now that you are a good person and I have lost my mind, aren’t you? It is that inherited sin nature that we got from Adam and Eve that makes us look evil in God’s eyes. If the Devil hadn’t tempted Adam and Eve we would look good to God. How did this happen? Do you remember the 6 D’s from last week that causes temptation to incubate into sin? Adam and Eve went through all six stages. 1.) Deceit occurred when they believed Satan’s lie about the consequences of disobeying God. 2.) Delight came from the perfect appearance of the fruit. 3.) Desire set in because they wanted to be like God and know good and evil, at least that is what they were led to believe by the Devil. 4.) Deliberation came and they rationalized and justified the eating of the fruit. 5.) Defeat happened when they ate the fruit, 6.) Despair set in when they were made aware of good and evil, and they realize their disobedience to God and hid themselves.
If we aren’t Born Spiritually and God views the DVD of our life on his big screen TV, he sees all of our evil sins. If we are Born Again and he looks at the DVD that has our name on it, all he sees is the good things we have done. How can this be you ask? It is because when we give our heart to Jesus we are hidden in Him and the label on Jesus DVD goes on our DVD. The labels get switched so when God views the DVD’s all he sees is good on my DVD and bad on Jesus DVD. Colossians 3:3-4 NLT  For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.  4  And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all His glory.
Enough said about our evilness (flesh). There is a lot of evil in this world. There are evil spirits and  people which pretty much encompasses what is in this world. Satan is being allowed to roam this earth with God’s close eye. Don’t get me wrong there is also good, but for some reason our news broadcasts seem like they focus on the bad.
So what about the deliverance part of the pray? Can we be delivered from evil if we ask for it? You bet we can. God is a deliverer in small and big things. Here is a small list of deliverance:
·         He delivered the children of Israel out of Egypt.
·         He delivered them from the Egyptian army at the Red Sea.
·         He delivered Daniel from the mouths of lions.
·         He delivered Daniel’s three friends from the fiery furnace.
·         He delivered David from the Philistine giant Goliath.
·         He delivered Lot and his family from Sodom.
·         He delivered Joseph from a pit and later from prison.
·         He delivered Elijah from Jezebel and Ahab.
·         He delivered Job from all his losses.
·         He delivered Peter from drowning in the Sea of Galilee.
·         He delivered Paul from perils of every kind.
God is a deliverer and he loves to have His children pray for deliverance. There is one person God did not deliver and that was his only begotten son. Matthew 27:26 NASB  Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified. Jesus was delivered to Pontius Pilate to be crucified in our place, it is what Jesus did at the cross for us so that we might be delivered from sin by His death and resurrection. He was the perfect sacrifice and he died in our place so each of us would have the opportunity to come to Him for salvation, and go to Heaven. John 3:36 NASB  "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."
Go through the book of Psalms and see how many times David prayed for deliverance. David was a Godly man and he prayed for deliverance for many things, like persecution, peril, personal adversaries, poverty, fear, the power of evil, etc. If David prayed for these things and more, it is only fitting that we need to pray daily for deliverance from evil and other things.
I leave you with this last thought. If you don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, you are missing one of the most important things in your life about deliverance and eternal life with Jesus Christ in Heaven. Please ask Jesus to forgive your sins, that you don’t want to sin anymore, and you want Him to come into your life to live within you and rule over your inherited sin nature.

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God!

Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth,
Unless you are Born Again, you cannot enter into Heaven, the Kingdom of God."
